Nice one Tony. Thank you. Revenge stories are a staple of books and films. However, good Revenge stories are hard to find. Well made Revenge Flicks even more so. The hero must be strong and skilled, but vulnerable and flawed. The hero must be an everyman, a nobody and be driven by one goal. This works best when the actor is a relative unknown. Rolling Thunder ticks all these boxes. I do not think modern audiences appreciate subtle nuances, instead they want flashy, flashy boom-boom and a silly costume. Great work fellah. Thanks again.
This film should be talked about more even should be nominated for academy award. I know it's cult status already. Another great review. They should be more films about this today. Instead of the CGI crap
Sterling review of a without doubt classic. I've almost maintained devane should have been bigger star, but it never happened. I like the sense of two-man team that is established right from the beginning but not picked up untill the final act. TLJ gives one of his finest performances. As the largely silent partner of devane who like him is forever trapped in Vietnam. As a youngster I really didnt understand RT and thought it crap -cos I didn't understand it. But I caught up with it on YT a few months ago and all my memories were gone and I watched it fresh and was genuinely surprised how much I enjoyed (if enjoy the right word) it. Excellent review and good song.
Hey, thanks, Graeme. I agree about Devane, he had a sort of menacing stillness about him that never quite morphed into leading man charisma. Glad you gave Rolling Thunder another shot. It's worth it. T.
I watched this in the 70's and many times since then, I still enjoy it. Tommy lee Jones and William Devane like you said are pith perfect in it. The only time they show emotion is during the final shoot out which is normal. Linda Haynes is always great to see, I just wish she did more movies. Luke Askew and James Best as the bad guys are great and creepy threatening at the same time. I love watching this film when I am feeling down it makes me feel better. Thank you for the great review.
Great review Tony! I coincidentally just watched this one again a week ago; I view it once a year. Nothing can compete with the gritty 70's action/exploitation flicks, in my humble opinion. I'm very glad I stumbled upon your channel.
I knew something I forgot to ask yesterday, I thought the outfit excellent as well-with the awesome cast it as well. I really thought "Best Seller"(1987) really good with Brian dennehy and James woods . What did you make of it T...

I watched this on HBO soon after it's theater run. was late at night. with no awareness of the film never having seen any advertisements other than the short blurb before the broadcast. I was impressed, I was aware of William Devanes talent he was of a understated acting style. he was a working actor he had leading man qualities. But it was. His character acting that. Kept him working. Tommy lee jones was new to me, and I would. Hazard to guess put him on many casting' directors. list. Askew, best and Coleman were solid working actors. Haynes equally. Was memorable.Quentin Tarantino and author Tom Graves. In 2015 Graves published a long profile about her titled Blonde Shadow: The Brief Career and Mysterious Disappearance of Actress Linda Haynes that is included in his anthology Louise Brooks, Frank Zappa, & Other Charmers & Dreamers.
Amazing review of an hidden gem (to me at least)Tony ,thanks very much.I discovered this movie a few years ago and I was blown away.Revenge movies/vigilante flicks are often vilified by critics (leftist mostly)with the same shallow words (and you know it)like fascism .They are labelled as populist and cringe. But (and I'm a leftist)I have always thought they needed far better treatment.1st of all the classics are the perfect following of old westerns and it's about people deprived of hope at the sight of a decayed society where moral codes are destroyed (Harry Brown is a fitting example).I love the one man standing aspect of this genre(one of my favorites). In Rolling Thunder the acting his top notch with a great William Devane(really impressive). With Tommy Lee Jones(amazing too,I really admire the contrast between his ability with guns and his shyness with a woman)he forms a remarkable duo.Of course the final shootout is a highly talented nod to late great Sam Peckinpah.John Flynn was a brilliant craftsman.Once again I had big time seeing your video.
Thank you, Yann. Enjoyed your comments. The next one is going to be very much a different sort of thing altogether with very different subject matter. Be interesting to get your take on it. T.
No, I've never reviewed The Devils, Graeme. My intention is to do it at some point, but since there is a completed full director's cut Blu Ray that Warner Bros have been sitting on for years and will not release for some reason - despite canvassing from people like Mark Kermode and Alex Cox who are big fan of the film - I've been biding my time until that situation resolves and I get a hold of a copy in order to do the most complete review I can. And get the best quality images available for the review. It may take a while.

Oi mate'I'm a huge fan of yours and I was wondering if you could make a "Gangster no 1 review".That is a highly neglected movie
As a latter day British gangster movie of some flair and quality, Gangster No 1 is on my to do list.

For some reason I thought you reviewed it. Soz. I have a copy but not convinced of its Providence.
Thanks t.
Understandably a favourite of Mr Tarantino.
