Here are my Keys to Success for a Tree Swipe:
1. I mixed these paints to a medium-thin consistency, leaving a trace and a small mound when drizzled off of the stir stick.
2. Let your paints sit for several hours before using them to reduce the amount of air bubbles when you pour. As a general rule, the thicker the consistency of your paints, the longer it takes for the bubbles to rise through the paint and release. I usually let them sit (covered) for about 24 hours before using them.
3. A Tree Swipe has two layers: a background swipe and a composition swipe. To create the background, I put down a transparent dark blue base, and also used it as the swipe color over the layered metallics. I used repurposed plastic swiping tools in several sizes to create some variation and randomness in the background. If you are going to tilt to level out the paint, this is when you should do it.
4. For the composition, I used a wider bladed palette knife to create the structure of the tree, and then added details and definition to the branches.
5. Swiping must be done very slowly. If find it easiest to stand with one leg behind me so I can shift my weight and still get a smooth swipe.
6. Swiping creates a lot of air bubbles, so torch often.
Colors used:
Amsterdam Pthalo Blue and Greenish Blue
DecoArt Extreme Sheen Copper
DecoArt 24K Gold
Amsterdam Pearl White
Artist's Loft Metallic Cobalt Blue
Amsterdam Sky Blue Light
I used a 24"x36" gallery wrapped canvas.

This is so magical Nate. I have been an accidental tree painter, sketcher, sculptor for years - by that I mean I might start an ink sketch of person and they inevitably turn into a tree or of a tree and it becomes a person. I have to try this. Thank you so much.
Love it Nate! Love from NB Canada!

Kudos Nate… it has a very mystical look to it, I absolutely love it, love it, love it!!!❤❤❤ as a matter of fact, I’m gonna be a copycat and try to make this myself, but I will say… Nine times out of 10, it’s not going to come out anything of what I want it to be, per usual, lol!!! This is a gorgeous piece! It does look as if the moon is behind the tree, but the copper brightens the left side of the tree almost as if there is a light source on that side of the tree. Definitely the best tree swipe I have ever seen. Bravo!

Wow! Wow! Wow! That is spectacular.
Wow that tree is unbelievable. Beautiful.
I did a tree swipe for my very first ever fluid pour and it's amazing. Everyone wants it lol and are currently battling it out. Even the owner of the place I have a storage unit offered me $300! But it's my very first one and I want to keep it. I did it on a one half black under layer and half white. I haven't tried another, been doing ring pours with a spin out but dang, that gorgeous tree! It has to be beginners luck but I did it regardless.
This is the most beautiful tree I seen so far….❤❤❤
LOVE AT FIRST SWIPE! Thank you for sharing.
Nate, you do the most beautiful work! Thank you.
