How to Join the Peace Corps

If you are ready for 27 months of hard but rewarding work, a job with the Peace Corps might be for you. These steps will help you on your way toward an unforgettable experience.
Step 1: Be 18 years old and a U.S. citizen
Meet the basic requirements for joining the Peace Corps by being at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen.
Tip
A college degree and the ability to speak a foreign language are useful but not required for most positions with the Peace Corps.
Step 2: Talk to a recruiter or attend a recruiting event
Talk with a Peace Corps recruiter about opportunities and requirements. Check the Peace Corps web site - PeaceCorps.gov - for dates of local recruiting events.
Step 3: Complete an application form
Complete the official application form, which is available on the Peace Corps web site or from a recruiting event. Provide information about yourself, your education, and your interests.
Tip
Submit the application form well in advance of when you want to start work. It can take up to a year to complete the entire application process.
Step 4: Interview with a recruiter
Schedule an interview with a recruiter, either in person or over the phone. Prepare to talk about why you want to join as well as your past work and volunteer experience.
Step 5: Complete a medical and legal evaluation
Complete a medical evaluation for full physical, dental, and vision exams. Fill out all the necessary legal paperwork, and pass an FBI background check.
Tip
A health condition won't keep you out of the Peace Corps program; the medical evaluation helps ensure that your condition can be treated in the country where you're placed.
Step 6: Receive your invitation packet and accept your appointment
Receive your official invitation packet in the mail and review your appointment details. Contact your recruiter within 10 days to accept your new job, and get ready to start your new life.

I think it would definately be a good idea for the peace corps to establish a division in all of the countries they visit, allowing the people they've helped to join up and pay it forward. I am an American 1st year college student, majoring in secondary education and i'm eager to join the peace corps as soon as possible. I think anyone with a desire to help should be allowed to join, regardless of their nationality, race, or gender.

Of course the Peace Corps does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age or even country of birth. Peace Corps volunteers work with local citizens, learning from each other, really.

@djackou812 To a very small extent you are correct. A very very small extent. I have done Peace Corps three times and yes, as terrible as it was, one woman was raped but, she accepted a ride from strangers. When she reported it which was within a few hours after the attack, Peace Corps medical took great care of her.
