- Come have a tour of part of what it takes to get a 1953 Chris Craft 5.5 hp Challenger that will soon be used on a 12' 1953 Chris Craft Kit boat. After checking for spark, replacing the plugs, checking compression and checking the carburetor/fuel system/rebuilding the carburetor, recently retired Automotive Engineer Bruce Vandervort of southwest Michigan, and antique outboard enthusiast, helps antique/classic boat enthusiast David Irvine get the outboard running. Bruce steps the viewer through learning about the engine and its design, how the water flows from the water pump impeller in the lower unit through the engine and back down to the exhaust. He removes the lower unit and steps through checking tubes, ports, and other areas that may have become clogged over the decades. He replaces and / or makes new gaskets, seals and greases accordingly to show the process of going through the engine and making it fully operational again! Special thanks Bruce for your time, commitment, and making this entire process fun an interesting. Extended thanks to Chris Craft outboard expert Matt Woods, Chris Craft Outboard expert and owner of the renown Brackett Auto Parts, located in the motherland, Algonac, MI for not only selling me this outboard and kit boat, but for also offering advice and parts to get this all operational!
