Great health benefits! No longer need high blood pressure meds. My husband and I make a green juice drink each morning using this wonderful fruit. We are trying to grow our own this year because our local store keeps raising the price. Still, it is worth every penny.
Some of my filipino family does this, the rest will say its not bitter enough haha. Its nice to see this plant is appreciated outside of the Southeast Asian community
Richard , you are perfectly right! This juice of bitter melon for those diabetics people it's the best ever! I'm the one suffer of this disease , and this juice really keep me in life! Thank God & Nature for this veggies !!!
MihaelaV68 I am very curious about the claim of benefits for diabetics. I am a type one diabetic. Can you tell me exactly what effect it has that helps you with diabetes.
I don't believe anyone who says they enjoy bitter melon. "I just love the bitterness." No you don't! Let's get real. I have a pile of bitter cucumber skins to sell you...
Eh? If we're talking English Cucumber I actually do enjoy the whole cucumber. If we're talking this stuff... Well no. I can get used to it, which is exactly what I think happened with those people. First taste though? Yuck. I'll eat it cuz I don't want to waste it.
Karela has many health benefits because of its bitterness. I normally steam mines with minimal olive oil & add a tomato & onion. However, adding tomato or onions would not remove the flavor but neutralize it! Taste great with rice!
*If you don't like the bitterness in bitter melon, then use black bitter melon instead, if you can get your hands on it. It is virtually devoid of bitterness but still packed with flavor. They called it the "black pearl bitter gourd" in China. Judging from its extreme dark green, almost black color, it would most likely have a far higher concentration of chlorophyll than the common variety to begin with. Don't know if it's available in any other countries yet though. It is a very dark green, almost black variety of bitter melon designed for those who can't tolerate the bitter taste but love that refreshing green-tea-like scent of bitter melons.*
Stir fry is my fave! or made into a refreshing soup with delicate bitter flavor. On another note it's very good for the diabetic person trying to control their glucose level naturally plus full of vitamins, fibers and minerals.
It is OK to add a bit of salt, it is OK to marinate it for an hour. It is NOT ok to squeeze the juice out though for all the vitamins, minerals and all the goodness will vanish and what left is just crap. If you really do not want to have its natural bitterness (which I just love), add a bit of yogourt or lime juice to your cooking. I fry bitter gourd pieces with coconut slices and onion and it turns out really yummy.
I forget to tell you guys, really don't drink the juice it self mix with other veggies and lemon juice for better taste! Enjoy and good health to everyone !
@MilaelaV68 does added the juice it's to a smoothie cause it to loose its benefits. Or to gain the best benefit it's best to use just a little water and a blender to get the most out of it. Especially to drop sugar levels for a lower A1c
Krest-Anne Cortes yes! Ampalaya!!! You can find et in any Asian market! My grandma used to makes this so often haha, they loved th health benefits. Though I despised th taste!!!!! Hahaha
I what i do is wash the whole bitter melon first to remove any dirt, do not cut or slice it. Put it in a plastic sprinkle with enough salt..and let it sit for about an hour or more..wash it again, then slice to cook. 😊
nice video. we've doing this for years since when I was a kid. but we are not doing it for an hour only for few minutes 20mins max. It still have those bitterness in it but not too much.
Hello Rose thank you for the reply. As you know Diabetics we frequently check our blood sugar. While taking the BM and was getting the headaches my blood sugar wasn't low it was ranging 80 to 115. In the articles I've read were the same is mentioned with regards to headaches the association between taking the Meds and the Bitter Melon, the headaches haven't been associated with this mix. But so far my BS hasn't gone into the real low range where it went below 75.
I cook this with a can of corned beef which basically neutralizes the bitterness. It can be made with chicken, beef, saltfish and shrimp....do you have a video on stew corilla that would be great for ppl to see...ijs
Betty Botter bought a bit of bum butter, blah she said, bum butter's bitter but if I put it in my batter, it will make my batter bitter! But, a bit of better butter will make my batter better! Then she bought a bit of better butter, better than the bitter butter and made her batter better! So twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter....and yes, some bitter melon for the recipe too. :-)
to each her own.. some varieties are overly bitter. the video has close to 250k views.. so I would assume there are many people interested in getting some of the bitter out?
The benefit we get from bitter melon is its bitter. Yours is great for those people haven't try bitter melon yet so they can try again and again without running away from first taste.
The leaves is also, used to add for corn soup... delicious....bitter taste .. because its not so bitter, just fine. Called "amargoso" in the asian cuisine.
***** i dont know why someone try to remove the original taste of the ingredient and that make me "not a good chef" ? ok...kid! if you dont know how to cook plz stfu
***** i used to live in vietnam dude,i cook and eat this everyday.even now i when i live in australia,i still cook and eat them every freaking days. dude you dont know anything plz just take off..
i agree, dont eat if you dont like the bitter haha its called bitter melon for a reason its like not liking the flavor of banana and trying to remove the banana flavor
Anthony Moala well you have those who are eating the bitter melon because they like the taste and the benefits, but there are those who are eating it because the NEED the benefits, although they do not like the taste.
Anthony Moala aww boops, we are curious how to cook it and what would make it more appealing. Bcuz when trying new foods asking others how they prepare it is the fun part of sharing recipes. There's no wrong or right way, it's all in the love ❤️ of food 🥘 and. Learning. So, my question to you is.... How do you prepare bitter 🍈 melon? You may have a cool 😎 way that we may like.
Why remove the bitterness. You loose the bitter flavor. I like it with thinly sliced pork belly. Just a little bit of salt and black pepper. And that is it. Then serve with rice.
1. Some can be overly BITTER (depending on the season and the variety) and 2. Some people may want it for the health benefits and not the bitter taste.
Your bitter melon looks very like an auficos (here in Spain) or Armenian cucumber which is a type of cucumber less prone to giving you "gas" than traditional cucumber. It is only rarely bitter, unlike some cucumbers I have planted which are more often than not bitter here.
I'm a Type II Diabetic. I started using Bitter Melon but would get head aches. Any advice on how to deal or eliminate the head aches associated with BM. Great info keep it coming thank you.
I salt and let sit for 10 minutes. Then I rinse. I don't think I'd squeeze it. The juice has great qualities. You just want to get rid of a bit of the bitterness. Better yet: Pick a large, ripe bittermelon that is not so green (there are many varietals). Those tend to be the least bitter. But bittermelon is bitter. You develop a taste for it, if you give it a chance.
Why do people eat this? It's awful! I not only salted this well, I peeled the rind and inside, and blanched it. It was still too bitter for my fiance and I to eat.
I don't think you've tried the veggie before. Ets offensively bitter even after soaking with salt and water. The health benefits are astounding, and some people love the taste. You are treating this veggie like a math problem, 1-1=0.
Great health benefits! No longer need high blood pressure meds. My husband and I make a green juice drink each morning using this wonderful fruit. We are trying to grow our own this year because our local store keeps raising the price. Still, it is worth every penny.
I know this is a year later but I am just now seeing this video. Can you kindly share the green juice drink ingredients
in your drink?
Some of my filipino family does this, the rest will say its not bitter enough haha. Its nice to see this plant is appreciated outside of the Southeast Asian community

Yo if that's actually true, then i gotta try that.
So the salt won't kill the benefits of it?
Summary: cut the melon into thin pieces, sprinkle salt, let sit for ~1 hour, and squeeze out excess water. 0:58
Will the health benefits still remain? Do you have video of you cooking this?

I am thankful I am carribean and I Saw this at our Asian market now I can not only cut and cut down bitterness but i can cook it as well. Thank you.
Stir fry is my fave! or made into a refreshing soup with delicate bitter flavor. On another note it's very good for the diabetic person trying to control their glucose level naturally plus full of vitamins, fibers and minerals.
I like it bitter. Saute with fish or ground chicken or beef with oyster sauce ....over steam white rice. !!! Liked your channel !
Good info...I used to wonder about how to get rid of the extreme bitterness yet still enjoy the flavor
Do you still get all the health benefits if you remove the bitterness?
God had saved it with bitterness and cooking nowadays remove that a bit.
Good work Chef ! This vegetable is called ' AMPALAYA ' in the Philippines and is a good food for those suffering from Type 2 diabetes.,God Bless !

This is my first time try to cook bitter melon. Will let you know how your instructions work for me.
The bitterness makes it better.
But isn't that taking out the goodness of the fruit??
Yeah but a nephew can't reap all of that goodness due to that bitterness
Aren't you removing the nutrient properties when you remove the bitterness?
I what i do is wash the whole bitter melon first to remove any dirt, do not cut or slice it. Put it in a plastic sprinkle with enough salt..and let it sit for about an hour or more..wash it again, then slice to cook. 😊
Thank you for sharing this video.
it also good for high blood pressure
Hello chef, full support here
you can also pickle this stuff!
nice video. we've doing this for years since when I was a kid. but we are not doing it for an hour only for few minutes 20mins max. It still have those bitterness in it but not too much.
What would be a good recipe for bitter mellon? I know where I can buy some.. I just have no idea how to use it...
like how you can salt an eggplant to remove excessive moisture and for better flavor
Hello Rose thank you for the reply. As you know Diabetics we frequently check our blood sugar. While taking the BM and was getting the headaches my blood sugar wasn't low it was ranging 80 to 115. This method is also good for eggplants.
Thanks for the info Chris, I'll try that method pretty soon.

+foodfaq I didn't find your comment rude, it's just a difference of opinion for which we are all entitled. Carry on.
possumshake - exaaaaactly!!! :-)
Bitter gourd or bitter melon does both r same?
can the seeds be juiced too?
The benefit we get from bitter melon is its bitter. Yours is great for those people haven't try bitter melon yet so they can try again and again without running away from first taste.
So if I do this, what happens to the vitamins in it? All gone too?
No. Google and read about this fruit. or bing/yahoo etc :-)
No we use this trick for more than 40 years but i won't completly eradicate bitteeness however somehow it works
just soak it in water with salt. the moisture still there but the bitterness are gone.
I'm curious why would you do it, that's the purpose of it.
Thank You for all the information..
Interesting that it is called “Karieli" in the Caribbean. Must be the Indian influence since it is called “Karela” in India.
thankyou Chris will give it a go.
The leaves is also, used to add for corn soup... delicious....bitter taste .. because its not so bitter, just fine. Called "amargoso" in the asian cuisine.

Where do we find bitter melon?
Asian stores.
Thank you 🙏🏻
My parents said that the nutrients of this vegetable would be gone if we remove the bitterness of it.
It worked! Thank you!
the bitter taste is the best part, at least for me it is.
Exactly. Weird to get rid of the bitterness.
The bitterness of this green is like the yoak in eggs or the fat in meat

The whole idea is the goodness of the bitterness but by adding salt, you just ruined it and also increased the chances for high blood pressure.
Loved it
Thank you
By Eating or juicing RAW bitter melon is it possible to develop or have Intestinal Worm?
Victor Dagalea Not sure but washing it with tumeric water might reduce the risk of parasites.
papaya seeds are anti parasitic, so of you are worried about parasites blend it with papaya seeds and the flesh; it's quite tasty!
Never heard of it being called bitter melon I’ve always known it as kerela
i like the bitterness. try cooking them with scrambled eggs into an omelette .
I like bitter in taste coz the vitamins are in their bitterness.
why on earth you take the bitter out of the bitter melon.yes,i am also a chef,i just dont understand why you do it ?
***** i dont know why someone try to remove the original taste of the ingredient and that make me "not a good chef" ?

pecans mask the bitterness...try it!!
Why remove the bitterness. You loose the bitter flavor.

Why would anyone do this? Bitter melon is supposed to be bitter! LOL
1. Some can be overly BITTER (depending on the season and the variety) and 2. Some people may want it for the health benefits and not the bitter taste.
MrKErocks lol I was going to say the same 🙄🙄
Hello not all people can stand bitterness.
Your bitter melon looks very like an auficos (here in Spain) or Armenian cucumber which is a type of cucumber less prone to giving you "gas" than traditional cucumber. It is only rarely bitter, unlike some cucumbers I have planted which are more often than not bitter here.

As they say, if you can't take the heat stay off the kitchen
What's the name?
BITTER melon. So... don't remove the bitterness...
It wouldn't be bitter melon anymore
how do you get the bitterness out of Mauby Syrup? ha ha
To me the one you cook not bitter to me, normal only.
I salt and let sit for 10 minutes. Then I rinse. I don't think I'd squeeze it. The juice has great qualities. You just want to get rid of a bit of the bitterness. That's how we love in it, the bitterness.
Its the bitter you need. .smh
Why do people eat this? It's awful! I not only salted this well, I peeled the rind and inside, and blanched it. It was still too bitter for my fiance and I to eat.
it depends on how you cook it, i personally like the bitterness, try making filipino dishes like pinakbet or with chicken paria
I just clicked ur ads
if you take the bitterness out of a bitter melon its nothing you are literally left with nothing
You can never take ALL the bitterness out. Just not possible. The removal is just a matter of degrees.
I don't think you've tried the veggie before. Ets offensively bitter even after soaking with salt and water. The health benefits are astounding, and some people love the taste. You are treating this veggie like a math problem, 1-1=0.
OMG!
your video's a little low I can't hear what your saying, maybe next time.
+Ruth Mann I think its your volume settings
this is stupid. bittermelon is supposed to be bitter. it's good like that.
Just eat a cucumber. You're removing the health benefits when you remove the bitter.
This video is misinforming on so many levels. You lose off this one chris
