I would say that there’s no way to keep the core Wonder woman with this concept, the core is that she is the ambassador of the Amazonian culture. Not necessarily officially as a political tool, but rather an individual trying to share a different philosophy and way of life with man’s world. That is not present in this issue whatsoever and considering that she’s not raised by Amazons, I don’t know how she will learn that and be able to be that.

I just want to take a moment and bask on the fact that some still understand what "literally" means, such as yourself, as opposed to "metaphorical." Thank you for being you.
I love it, I love them keeping her core goodness, I love her edgy anime look and giant sword. I even like how simple and good they portrayed her relationship with her mother. I'm sure it will get complicated later but I think this first issue is going for being an iconic showcase of the themes and not just a standard issue. Love, especially between women and their daughters/mothers is a great topic for Womnder Woman to explore. I hope they really focus in on that sort of thing.
I enjoyed this issue, much more than I was expecting. From baby Diana pulling a Hercules to her glowing armor giving strong Ares vibes, I was digging it. Enjoyed the Absolute number 1s so far, though the upcoming superman was the one I'm most unsure of from the start.
I enjoyed the first issue a lot! The art perfectly suits the mythological roots of this story and does a great job with action. The one thing I'm missing, which I'm sure we'll get to - is this issue hasn't delivered yet on the premise of "Wonder Woman raised in HELL." From what we saw, it wasn't so bad.(where did all those books come from?) I get having the past sequences needing to contrast the violence of the present-day scenes, so that's fine. But I imagine there's going to be a lot more struggle and building up of Diana getting her tattoos and accumulating her weapons. (will there be trials?) I also assume there were repercussions to her saying "Amazon" and discovering her heritage. I'm Absolutely All In on this!
I always love your Wonder Woman videos! I think it's so cool to hear your daughter is into it and you'll have something to bond over. I'm glad WW fans are getting two monthly WW titles instead of just one. I'm interested in staying with the series. It feels too early still to have a whole opinion. The first issue was an enjoyable read. I loved the action. I also liked that she wasn't from the actual Biblical hell, but an island named so. Here's hoping the story builds. The artist definitely has craftsmanship, but it read a little more cartoony with boxy figure shapes as opposed to sleek, feminine strength. I'm going to stick with it though. Whatever keeps her slaying giants and doing cool things.
I really enjoyed Absolute Batman, did not expect much from this title tho. I was wrong. This was better! I love the story, I love the origin, I love the designs the art. Dear god all of it is fantastic! You can feel how she IS Diana, good person at her core, but set against a rougher world. Her fight more challenging. EDIT: at moments this reminded me of the grittiness New52 Wonder Woman had (by this I do not mean to say it's a 1:1 redoing of Azzarelo's work, obviously this is very different). A bit of that is in the costume, and a bit in the blood of the world.
this might be my favourite first issue of the year! and i think absolute wonder woman is already one of my favourite new (kind of) comic characters! i feel the "edgelord" elements are used with enough self awareness that they just come across as fun rather than try hard (i feel this way about absolute batman #1 as well actually)! great points about diana's perfection potentially making her a little bland, but i personally don't mind a few characters like her and clark being presented as flawless paragons. and i love the shift from presenting her as a "divine paragon" to an "infernal paragon", that's a fun archetype i don't see played around with too often! as sappy as it is, i find it really sweet that when diana was raised by her one of her greatest enemies, rather than being corrupted by circe, the opposite happened haha. really excited to keep reading this one and see where it goes! 2/2 for absolute DC so far imo, really curious to see where it goes!
Circe is a better mom than Hippolyta. I said it. Teaching a child to deal with the world and letting them go > clinging to them with manipulative guilt and lies I loved this. Thoughtful yet badass. All of the artists who contributed complimented each other and the work. It felt right while feeling wrong, what a needle to thread. My favorite panel (except for all the other ones, too) was the baby Diana lizard kiss. It's exquisite.
Considering they're playing up Diana as needing to be this woman who is perfect at all things at all times (while clearly setting up to subvert a lot of that), I gotta wonder how they're gonna use Dr. Psycho. Dude's already a pure evil monster, but in the Absolute Universe, they can go a lot of different directions with him...
I can kinda ride with Diana not switching straight to rage in the first volume because like she was raised in hell, she knows its injustices, she knows raging against them there is just feeding into the cycle of the place. The rage might be there but its on a low simmer, easy to push aside because its unhelpful. If in later comics she ever ends up visiting another plane or even a pocket dimension where the rules are different but she's still subject to/witnesses similar injustices to those of hell despite the locals down talking hell I can imagine the rage flaring up, and then having her work through that rage to reaffirm that the core of her is still there. But I am extremely doubtful that they'll bother to do some that would give Diana that much depth. Idk hopefully they'll realise that people struggle to connect to perfect paragons because we're all too aware that people and ourselves aren't paragons, and will figure out a way to keep her from ending up too flat to enjoy. The art is so freaking good though.
honestly this first issue was really good i was afraid the first time that it would be too close from WW dead earth but i'm really happy that it's not the case
Just a cool fact: Nemesis (not pronounced the way you think it's pronounced) is a Greek goddess, specifically the goddess of *revenge* . This is an interesting juxtaposition, as in modern times, the Lasso of Truth has been rebranded as the Lasso of Hestia, one of the most kind god in the Greek pantheon. I definitely am curious what the Lasso of Nemesis can do! In regards to my opinion on this new Wonder Woman: I absolutely love her design. I do, however, find her characterization a bit flat. She grew up in a completely different environment, yet still maintains that perfect aspect. I really wish the writers tapped into her more aggressive, angry side. For example, in the Justice League animated series, Diana is a *very* angry person in that. While it could be seen as a negative trait, it wasn't her defining trait, yet it made her fleshed out. I really wish, since this Diana is from Hell, show how less patient she is or how unnecessarily violent she is, but keep an aspect of her compassionate side at the same time. A nature vs nurture, in a sense. By keeping her compassionate regardless, it sorta just says Diana is born good, which makes her a bit bland for my liking.
I think the problem is they simply haven’t contrasted Circe to the Amazons. It’s hard to know what she’s gained or lost without some comparison of personality
@@ceezyjeffezy2213Yes, most definitely! If I am getting my cannon correctly, Circe, in most DC interpretations, is a Wonder Woman villain. If this is still true, it's a bit odd Circe does *not* have an influence on Diana's character -- considering Hippolyta has a major influence on Diana. I think we need to give it more time to develop. I hope they didn't just focus on Absolute Batman and Superman and made Absolute Wonder Woman an after thought 😅 That tends to happen a lot.
Oddly enough when they do go into Diana being angry or aggressive people get ticked off about it and how it’s not Wonder Woman (like new 52, dcau, etc), which I find silly when people complain about that. I’m a bit more interested in absolute Diana and Circe and how much they bonded now like would Diana tries to get Circe to see the outer world or if they have a typical hero vs villain fight but they both aren’t actually going to fight because they both care about each other
I get to the shop on a thursday so will pick this up tomorrow. Looks promising. The colour scheme doesn't quite stand out for me but being red green colour blind that might be why. So it goes. I like the notion of her being raised by Circe. And I don't think I've read nearly as many alternate Diana's as I have Bats and Supes. So will be nice to have one.
I like the Absolute universe so far. Interesting reinterpretations of iconic characters, but it will take time to see if they can stick it out long term
I am less familiar with wonderwoman, but i think this is a pretty good alternative universe of her. This plays with the almost diety motif ( i think its cannon that she is a demigod or something?) by making her a hellspaen. It also makes sense based on her personality as she is depicted a couple of times as an experience warrior willing to raise hell. My only "ummm actually" is that, if they are keeping the greek mythology, there isn't really a "hell" but im sure there is a DC explanation i am missing lol. This give me more hope for this run! Hopefully sups can knock it out the park
Best too my knowledge every religion is real in the DCU and their locations are accessible so while Hades and Hell are stated to be separate things they both exist. So it could be possible that The Greek Pantheon used it's location too their benefit.
The sword has big Berserk vibes for me. While it does look like the buster blade a lot of panels give it the feel of Guts' sword. Also that giant red monster looks just like the evil things in manga/anime Toriko especially with how its beak is split.
I liked it... diana is awesome as always and the darker look suits her, did not like the "last of..."-part makes her very superman-like. but i did like circe as her mother, I would love to get to know that circe a lot more...
I absolutely loved this issue of Absolute Wonder Woman! Not only is she badass, but I loved all the callbacks to Greek mythology and how Diana retains her kind spirit. Kinda like if a Disney princess grew up in hell and that’s exactly the kind of comic I want.
I get why u felt diana a lil ideal, but for me that is because it is her mother narrating. We her side of diana first. What i really loved about this issue was that the art told more than the text. The double pages of circe and diana growing together, the cave changing and becoming a home was the core of book for me. Circe was cold and indiferent, she would watch a baby die. But she earns a life with diana. They bond, she teachs circe how to love and respect. The how issue Circe talks about whats is love and how she understand that diana had to go. Saying the word, coming out, crying about it, was the end of their journey. We understand that this world was a living hell and diana, since birth, could bring love into it. It is a first issue so we still dont know much, but for me it set the tone of who this diana needs to be
It’s issue one and seems good. I just feel like it’s a missed opportunity to see a darker version of Diana. One raised by Hades akin to a Odin and Hela dynamic from Thor 3. The two of them rampaging together through the centuries. Until she becomes aware of her true origins. But that’s just my thoughts.
i could see that angle as a possibility. who would circe trust to help train and educate diana... i could see hades, nemesis, even maybe a rebellious MARS helping in this role. if the subtle inversions of certain dynamics are in place, i could see it taking shape in an interesting way. with the olympians largely serving an almost antagonistic role, i could see hades shown in a more caring light. like the curious great uncle who might not be willing to turn his blade against zeus's tyranny, he is willing to allow diana to learn tactics and fighting skills from the DEAD. as long as she does not break those rules that bind his house.
As a fan who's usually not interested in the alternate versions of characters in general...I absolutely LOVED Ab-WoW! #1. The Ab-look. The Ab-powers. The Ab-history. And especially The Ab-Pegasus...everything. I agree with that fan who said this could be an ongoing series. I would buy it. I was just as wonderfully surprised with Ab-Bat.
I'm getting very interested. I like what I'm seeing. I prefer to buy my comics in physical form, but these absolutes and Ultimate Spiderman are tempting me to buy Digital since it's hard for me to get t a local comic store. Digging the look, I really liked when it showed her talking to the solders and you see how tall she is and I don't' think tha'ts usally reflected well in the main comics usually. I actually tend to think of Barda being that tall and Diana being closer to the soldiers height. Hoping for a Realy good outing for Super Man, he's the one I'm really hoping for a slam dunk on.
As a male comic reader I loved the small hints you gave about the connections you may have felt towards this storyline. Perhaps an episode on books with motherhood themes? Where do predominantly male writers and artists miss? Where do female creators become generic? As always great work
I could see the twist being A) The gods saw a prophecy of an Amazon upending the divine hierarchy (much like Zeus, Chronos, and Uranus) B) Them trying to prevent it by punishing the Amazons and barring even the mention of their name in the world C) Locking up Diana for a crime could absolutely do when she learns the full truth D) Pulling a classic "Self-fulfilled prophesy" and dooming them to die off by some poetic way that also makes Diana a beacon of goodness in comparison
I didn't have high expectations for Absolute Batman or Absolute Wonderwoman but these two comics really exceeded my expectations and I am so happy with them. The art in Absolute Wonder Woman is so, so beautiful! I'm absolutely in love with it. Also the scene with baby Diana and the snake was very Hercules, which was interesting. - on a different note, do you plan on reading/have you read Death in Family:Robin lives? I would be interested in your thoughts on that one
This and the GL book are the books I'm most interested in out of this whole Absolute project. Of course, since I only read trades - who has the time or space to collect single issues? - it's gonna be a while before I can share my thoughts on this series.

it showcase that Circe even if she didnt want to rise Wonder woman, she did and she did it right even if that no planned
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I just want to take a moment and bask on the fact that some still understand what "literally" means, such as yourself, as opposed to "metaphorical." Thank you for being you.
i was sceptical but this first issue sounds like absolut fire. Also, your daughter saying this is the best comic ever? Thats the only opinion I needed
I gotta say, I like this idea of Wonder Woman a lot! Also, "mother daughter Kaiju time." Awwww ❤
A “rebellious Diana” issue could be fun if done on a riff on Kanigher’s Wonder Girl stories. Is the world ready for Absolute Mer-Boy?
I know I am, lol.
this might be my favourite first issue of the year! and i think absolute wonder woman is already one of my favourite new (kind of) comic characters!
i feel the "edgelord" elements are used with enough self awareness that they just come across as fun rather than try hard (i feel this way about absolute batman #1 as well actually)!
great points about diana's perfection potentially making her a little bland, but i personally don't mind a few characters like her and clark being presented as flawless paragons. and i love the shift from presenting her as a "divine paragon" to an "infernal paragon", that's a fun archetype i don't see played around with too often!
as sappy as it is, i find it really sweet that when diana was raised by her one of her greatest enemies, rather than being corrupted by circe, the opposite happened haha.
really excited to keep reading this one and see where it goes! 2/2 for absolute DC so far imo, really curious to see where it goes!
6:04 "As a mother of more than one daughter, this feels very idyllic." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Circe is a better mom than Hippolyta. I said it.
Teaching a child to deal with the world and letting them go > clinging to them with manipulative guilt and lies
I loved this. Thoughtful yet badass. All of the artists who contributed complimented each other and the work. It felt right while feeling wrong, what a needle to thread. My favorite panel (except for all the other ones, too) was the baby Diana lizard kiss. It's exquisite.
I really love how you do your makeup in these videos. Always looking forward to what lipstick or eye shadow you plan to use next.
Loved it!!!!! Also, I read this and Wonder Woman #14 back-to-back, and there was a beautiful sort of symmetry between the two. Mothers and daughters.
I like this direction, and I really like the art. I hope you cover the superman one too. And I'm glad to hear about mother-daughter Kaiju time!
3:14 I know that that is the WW logo but it sure looks like the way Venom's spider leg stripes are sometimes drawn.
2:06 This gives serious Berserker Armor vibes
Thank you for covering this! The first time I saw Leg-Day Batman , i was immediately expecting disappointment; you now have me wanting to buy these!
honestly this first issue was really good i was afraid the first time that it would be too close from WW dead earth but i'm really happy that it's not the case
I loved this issue, unreservedly. It was great. And the sequence with Diana saying Amazon for the first time did get me to almost tear up
absolutely 💯 onboard 🎉 great 1st issue, it felt super dense and something I will want to read several times
Maybe this Wonder Woman could learn to become more Emotional and becoming a Leader to her Kind.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So. Good. Fascinating Circe and Diana relationship. Love WW as a Witch
I’m just here for Wonder Woman’s giant butter knife.
Not gonna lie. I want more of this. Could be the beginning of the something great.
Calling it now, the newscaster is Allan Scott.
Well damn this actually sounds good, might sell me on the absolute universe
Very nice. So far, so good.
Very similar to Melinoe from the game Hades II. Raised by a witch as a foster parent and taught witchcraft.
Her new look is immaculate
This is very interesting and I’d like to see more!
1:49 Insert Evangelion Drums
You can tell the Manga/anime feeling in this comic. I want more. I want her to be violent and cool.
It is a first issue so we still dont know much, but for me it set the tone of who this diana needs to be
We dont know this diana yet. Even in absolute batman, we dont know much about him. All we saw was how others sees them
It is off to an interesting and keen start. I look forward to seeing where it goes!
Lol looks like the berserk armor with the sword
So cool !!! I love the Soward
This may be the look I love the most for her. And the art is amazing! This is another book I'll be buying once it's published where I live 😊
Absolutely loved it!
I love how they wrote "Yeet!" when she tossed the snake, as if that's actually the sound it made when she threw it.
I knew you'd end up putting out a video before I had a chance to read it ... that's it, I'm quitting my job.
Lol Absolute Wonder Woman will not be denied.
I was just as wonderfully surprised with Ab-Bat.
never got into WW solo stories before, so this new initiative is doing a good job. I'm really excited to see your thoughts and coverage of this series
The Gods: Don't let her hear the word "Amazon"
Jeff Bezos sent to Hell after he died, asked by Wonder Woman why he's there:
The Gods: Awwww dammit!
As a male comic reader I loved the small hints you gave about the connections you may have felt towards this storyline.
Perhaps an episode on books with motherhood themes? Where do predominantly male writers and artists miss? Where do female creators become generic?
As always great work
She goes HARD on this, I love it
Great analysis and critique. Very fairly presented. Nice.
You are a treasure Sasha
This book looks awesome 🤩
I could see the twist being
A) The gods saw a prophecy of an Amazon upending the divine hierarchy (much like Zeus, Chronos, and Uranus)
B) Them trying to prevent it by punishing the Amazons and barring even the mention of their name in the world
C) Locking up Diana for a crime could absolutely do when she learns the full truth
D) Pulling a classic "Self-fulfilled prophesy" and dooming them to die off by some poetic way that also makes Diana a beacon of goodness in comparison
- it's gonna be a while before I can share my thoughts on this series.
i loved this. i love the Absolute Universe in general! one thing i have been the most curious about though, are the absolute versions of villains and anti-heroes. mostly the villains though. Absolute Bizzaro is probably what im most hoping to see
Hopefully created form clay or like volcano ash or something
The creator did say they were taking inspiration from Historia, so that's probable.

I think this is the best version of Wonder Woman
