- Here is how we fit 3 car seats in our Subaru Ascent. We have a high back harnessed booster, convertible car seat, and infant carrier to arrange. This configuration is what has worked best for our three car seats. Please leave any questions or requests you have in the comments below!

Nice video! Your setup with the car seats is awesome. I have a Highlander and it has a removable middle seat on the 2nd row to make captain seats. Those make life so much easier with 3 kids and all the thrill that comes with it ! I hope y’all been safe and thanks for the informative video!

Thank you for this video! Baby #2 is coming this summer, and with inventory how it is right now, we can't go to a dealership to test how a convertible seat + Pipa would fit. All Ascents seem to be getting snatched up before being delivered to the lot. Crazy times.
I have the nuna infant and the nuna rave convertible car seat as well I love them both and can’t wait to have my 2nd baby in July 🥰
I have trouble making the car seat in the rear right seat as tight as I want it. We have the bench seat and three slim Diono 3r seats. When we go on vacation, we put all three in the middle row so we can reach everyone on long trips to help with books and toys and water. This way we can fold the third row down and have extra storage for suitcases and such.
I have a 7 year old whose almost sizing out of her backless booster, a 5 year old whose about to jump to a high back booster (without a harness), and a 2 year old who we are about to turn her infant seat around to forward facing, and it looks like for my next car the Ascent will have plenty of room for my family of 5.
Yes it will! We down to a harnessed booster and backless booster and I can’t tell you how well this car has grown with our family!

Thanks for this video. We have about the same ages but have the infant behind the passenger seat and I have to move the passenger seat all the way forward for my daughter to get through (convertible is in the other captains chair). I wish the trunk was about 6 inches longer with the back row up, but then that little bit of leg room that makes the back comfortable for adults would be gone 😅 Can't win. I'm going to try this set up though 😊

I'm a fan/owner of Subaru, but as they do not make anything big enough I moved to VAN segment.
Yes, a lot of SUVs are 7 seat, but after seeing those "emergency" seats in trunk, where I would not like to travel for more than a mile, plus having no trunk for cargo once you use those seats, crawling through low roof space with backpain whenever I would need to buckle up/check kids .. That was no go for me.
VAN, with same footprint as combi/SUV, even with standard roof height I'm sort of walking inside almost standing. There is max 8 (2+3+3 variable) seats AND trunk. 3 baby car seats in a row no problem, because car is a bit wider, but still fitting to parking spots. Easier access as second row of door is sliding, so no problem in tight parking spot.
Yes, it does not look that fancy like Ascent/Tribeca, VW Tuareg, Audi Q7 .. it is a BUS .. but inner space and variability of the interior .. that's what changed my mind and I'm not going back (until Subaru makes something like VW Transporter).
Were your second row seats all the way back? I was trying to fit a graco extend2fit how you had yours rear facing in the 3rd row and I'm pretty sure it's more than touching the seat in front lol. Just now sure EXACTLY how much it can touch

I have an Ascent. There isn't much room for a stroller behind the 3rd row other than an umbrella stroller. I'm looking into getting a swivel tow hitch and basket to carry our wagon in.
What is the model and make of the booster seats you have in the third row. I can't find one that the seat bottom doesn't hang over the passenger seat.
Hey love the video! Do you have any video or at least suggestions on how you can fit two car seats in the captains chairs and one car seat in the third row? And how can the kid access the third row, and how could we access to buckle in?
Thank you! That’s tricky and I think it would mostly depend on why car seats you’re using. You’ll want to check how you need to install your car seats (each have different recommendations for how they face and the weight/height of your child!) and what the Ascent accommodates. If you look at the car seat lady link in the description box you’ll see the third row isn’t the same across for what it allows install wise. If there’s any decisions to make after that I would put forward facing car seats in the CCs to be able to slide the seat forward and maneuver easily around them. With infant carriers you’ll probably have to put them up in the CCs no matter what though!
Momma Alia well we dove in and are giving it a shot! Doing rear facing convertible on passenger side captains chair, baby car seat in drivers side captains chair, and forward booster seat in drivers side third row (only spot with lower anchors in that row). Hardest part will be getting the 4 year old buckled into the back seat but if baby is still in stroller while buckling in back seat kid, then can finish, out seat normal, then put the baby in. That’s the goal at least ha!
@@DanielShorstein did you bite the bullet and get an Ascent? I am facing the same canumbdrum. I would need two rear-facing car in the captain's chairs. I'm worried that my teenage son and somewhat elderly father would not be able to shimmy between the two captains chairs with rear-facing seats in them to access the third-row seating. Hope my concern is clear? Any insight you guys can provide would be super helpful.
Hey Loved the Video, I do have a question how did you safely add the second car seat to the third row , I see you have 2 set up but my ascent only has one set of lower latch anchors , so I can’t seem to safely latch the second car seat, I have 2 toddlers forward facing and a new born , any help will be appreciated thanks in advance
Thank you! Both of those car seats are install with the seatbelt, not the latch system so it wasn’t an issue for us. Your car seat should offer a way to be installed via seatbelt too!
With the third row up where does a stroller go, or a big Costco run they includes paper towels, toilet paper and diaper boxes?
We don’t go to bulk stores so that one is hard to say but our front-to-back double stroller and extra seat fit! Our side by side double stroller is a tighter, more complicated fit bc of the height but still doable. I regularly get $200-300 worth of grocery pick ups from Walmart in the trunk with no issue! It’s not as roomy as other giant SUVs but still pretty good in my opinion

If we had two rear-facing car seats in the middle captain's chairs, would a teenager or adult be able to slide through to access the third row seating?
Probably not and the third row gets tight for adults if you can’t scoot the captain’s chairs all the way forward. You can’t do that when you have rear facing car seats. You’re best bet would probably to put the convertible car seats in the third row. Sounds more difficult but honestly isn’t bad!
We went to put the two car seats into the third row as suggested, but there is only one set of hooks (between the seat and seat back), on the driver side. The passenger side third row seat doesn’t have them. There is the hook on the backside of the seat, but the two bottom hooks aren’t there.
you just use the seat belt. If forward facing seatbelt + the tether anchor on the seatback
Hey I'm curious as to how much space this leaves you all with? We have family all over and visit often and wondering if this vehicle is a good fit for our 3 in boosters. Thanks in advance!
I think it depends on what amount of space you’re happy with. Personally, I like what we usually have. With the captains chairs (and not a bench) we always have one of those open and my trunk has plenty of space for groceries or a full stroller. There is technically a seat between our boosters in the third row but not enough room that someone could actually sit there. So our family of 5 fits comfortably, with the ability to have one more person ride (also comfortably) with us, and trunk space for most of our usual stuff!
Can you move the captain seat forward to when an infant base is installed? We have a 15 month old and twins on the way. I like the room in between the captain seats, but worry about not being able to access the back once a base is installed.
Techincally as long as it didn’t utilize the seatbelt it could move. But the whole bucket seat is in there I’m not sure how much it would actually move
How far back can the driver's seat go with the infant carrier behind? Would you say it can go all the way, most of the way or only about half? I'm a 6'4" big dad and always have to sacrifice my leg room for the car seat in my Forester. This would help me finalize my decision to trade up.
My husband is 6 foot exactly and he add enough room to be comfortable. Maybe not as much as he'd like but it definitely wasn't squishing him. It would also depend on the seat you're using. Our infant carrier had a base with a load leg so it sat out a bit farther. I'm sure if you swung by a dealership with that empty car seat they'd have no problem letting you see for yourself!
My brother is 6'4 and was unable to get into my Ascent to drive it with the infant carrier behind the drivers seat 😔 My 6 foot husband is fine.
What about stroller?? If you have what kind fits back there? I have a big bulky double stroller with 3 kids too and that thing barley fits back there lol looking around for compact double stroller.
Im finding myself in the same dilemma now as we await 3rd baby's arrival. We have a phil&teds and its pretty awkward behind third row. I don't know what to do 😭
We have the Joovy Qool stroller. It can be a single, double, or triple seater. Back to front and I can fit it with its second seat back in my trunk just fine. I’m sure some strollers are bigger than others and this is just my experience. I personally love the Joovy Qool!
for 3rd row carseat, are there leg rooms enough for the kids?
Yep because the captain's chairs can slide forward to multiple spots

We fit our Joovy Qool (front to back double stroller) with both seats in the trunk without issue!

Hope you love it as much as we do! The booster seats we have are only installed with seat belts. So the girls are on either side of the third row with seat belt installs and anchors that tether to back in the trunk! My your user manual of the whatever car seat and the owner manual of the Ascent will always tell you what you can put and where!
