Oddly I didn’t remember this show at all but I loved this song and the duh duh lobey part of this song just popped in my head over 20 years later and I found it! The internet is amazing.
This is the litmus test for the show. If you were entertained by this, congratulations, you're in the portion of the population that liked "Freakazoid".
There’s a lovely Onion A/V interview with him where they asked him about voice acting. He said he did so much the only one he remembers enjoying was Freakazoid - and names this number as why
Just for anyone too young to have seen Barbara Streisand in Hello Dolly, that was a dead on parody of the title number, right down to the surprise appearance of Louis Armstrong. When this aired I'm sure kids were wondering why their parents were laughing so hard.
Given how deep our society is obsessed with pop culture and references plus with all that information at our fingertips and the fact this show is based on the idea o someone getting powers through the internet...I beg to differ.
SonofMrPeanut Yeah, I guess when you know for sure you won't be getting a third season regardless of what you do, it pretty much gives you free range to do whatever the hell you want. No sense trying to appeal to the masses, if you know this will be your swan song you might as well get as weird and/or artistic as you please. That sort of mentality shows up a lot in season 2. Most notably in episodes like "The Freakazoid" featuring a three-way argument between Freakazoid, Wakko, and Brain over who is Steven's favorite; "The Island of Dr. Mystico" which not only served as a clever spoof of the B-Movie Formula but also featured famed critic Leonard Maltin in one of his strangest cameo's; and of course let us not forget the series finale "Normadeus" in which they got Norm Abram, the last person you'd ever expect to see in a show like this, to team up with Freakazoid to defeat his greatest foes one last time.
Normadeus was a great way to go. Personally hearing Ricardo Montalban saying "Go, girlfriend" alone is worth the watch, but the rest is also top-notch. And, yes. Norm Abrham taking out baddies. Who thought they'd ever see that?
@@SonofMrPeanut My favorite part about Normadeus is that they could've taken all of the pot-shots at the network/executives in the finale (and nobody would've blamed them) but instead they decided to go out with the entire cast singing a song like "We'll Meet Again".
A VERY obscure joke within this -- like many viewers, I wondered why they had pledge amounts scrolling across the bottom of the screen midway through the number. Then I dimly remembered that HELLO DOLLY used to show on PBS sometimes. I put together that this must be a parody of the movie airing during a pledge drive; a friend added that the animators must have used a version taped off PBS during pledge season for a reference, because there are subtle movements to the camera similar to how movies are "panned and scanned" to show on TV. So, in the pre-UA-cam days, the people doing the show must have used a taped copy of the movie for reference, one that had pledges scrolling at the bottom of the screen, and incorporated that into their parody. NOW YOU KNOW.
Admittedly, I do feel like they devoted way too much time to this number, especially for a TV show episode, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love every second of it regardless.
They did......the creators wanted to see how far they could go with it.... They're just like fuck it let's do it how nuts can we make this show.....and it worked
That’s exactly what they were going for, they pushed it as far as they could. Cause…why not?? they knew at this point the show was getting cancelled anyway 🤷🏻♂️🤣
it doesn't help that back then Warner was really cautious about just reusing the tune (which is totally protected) so in addition to rewriting parody lyrics, they also always rewrote the melody.. which is also just impressive, being able to keep the 'language' of the song but making it totally distinct. The end of this one animaniacs videogame had a version of _their own theme song_ done in that style, just to show ruegger's versatility.
The best part is that I watched Hello, Dolly! years after watching this episode, and it was amazing to get the reference! I enjoyed this segment even without knowing about the source material, but the payoff years later was a huge gift.
