Without knowing what I was doing, when I bought peyote seeds for my 1st time in May 2021. I used 30% of the cheapest compost =£1 a sack & 70% cow manure. All 5 seeds produced seedlings But the sharp edges of the compost had scratched the soft tissue of 4 peyote. Only 1 survived. Surprisingly, it's doing very well to this day. (indoors on heatmat w/lighting). *I definitely don't suggest using my recipe, unless you are experimenting.*
I will probably do a video on pups at some point. In the meantime, my video on cuttings would apply. To root a pup, I normally put it already in its final pot (I don't make it root first). If it's very small, I just put it on top of the soil. If it's bigger, I bury it slightly to give it some stability. Roots will eventually come up, as long as the pup feels there is soil underneath.
It's volume I'm guessing, due to the jars being laid out in the exact same parts as mentioned in recipes (when it said 5 parts or 2 parts, there were 5 jars or 2 jars there). Unless otherwise stated, I'd take it like that.
I also have a big collection of peyotes and San Pedro's. Maybe sometime I can visit you in Barcelona. Made my holidays often there while sonar. Best regards to Catalonia from Bavaria.
Don’t use coir, it’s horrible for cacti (and many other plants) unless you buffer it with fertilizer and balance the ph occasionally, so not worth it. Just use peat, thank me later. I believe Jerry even came to this conclusion.
@@SetTheCurve well that's handy because I have some peat sitting here too. Honestly, I grow hydroponic cannabis for a living too so balancing ph and feeding really aren't issues for me. I have lots of practice lol
@@mikecurry6847 I also have experience growing cannabis, and I just feel like coco doesn’t do well without frequent irrigations to runoff. Because the baby cacti need to be left alone, using peat is superior IMO. I’m using sunshine mix supplemented with extra perlite and light fertilizer, like you’d give clones, and the growth is amazing. When I was using coir for cacti I kept getting stalled growth and red/pink seedlings.
@@SetTheCurve I really appreciate the heads up lol. I'm going to germinate some cacti seeds as soon as I get a grow light for them. I don't have anywhere with sunlight that I can put them right now. Do you know anything about the light they like? I'm guessing it's not going to be the same as the CMH lights I have on hand. Plus if I'm being honest I don't want to run a full grow light for some cacti that don't even like full sunlight in the first place. I'm moving into a new place in about a year and I'll have the perfect window sill for them but for now that place isn't ready, so I'm just making due with what I have.
a good place to find coco coir is in pet shops. its sold in compressed bricks for lizard terrariums. and lets be clear, the reason pumice is preferred over perlite is because perlite easily floats and that's obnoxious every time you water. the perlite floats up and sticks to the sides of your cactus plants.
Hi Jerry, what do you think of using zeolite instead of pumice/perlite? Or maybe in 50:50 proportion of the two? The reason is that they are widely available and cheap (as cat litter) and also has an open structure that stores water and provides room for air
So you don't have a grafting video but I figured you would be a good source of info on my plan. I need advice on whether this is a good plan. So I have a williamsii caespitosa with lots of pups. I have a pereskiopsis, and I have a pachanoi. My plan is to get fully grown peyote and have the alkaloid levels recover to root grown levels, but obviously via grafts. I plan to graft a pea sized caespitosa pup to the pereskiopsis, then once it's big enough, regraft to the pachanoi to bulk it up. I am hoping for plenty more pups popping out to experiment with this way too. Then once at a decent size I plan to root the scions to let the potency catch up. What do you think a reasonable time frame for all this is, going to graft the first pups come spring. UK, indoor grow, stable warm and bright conditions. What would be a reasonable time frame for these steps? I also read you can graft the loph root upside down onto a trich and it will pup, is this worth it or is it better to keep the loph rootstock in the ground and hope it pups (Il be cutting it above the areoles). Last question, when planning to root the scions, would it be a good idea to try and graft it onto the already established roots of a loph I just harvested? I tried reddit but no replies yet :(
I thought u were going to say after the grafts. Then, end by grafting it on top of a different rooted peyote. That gave me theory that the already rooted peyote, will push the alkaloid level up, by boosting its own energy to the pups, it ended up with attached to its roof. I've no clue what's best idea 🤷♂️. Like I say. Mines a theory also. 🌵🌈
I made a mix so far with coir, sand, pumice snd red lava rock and perlite. The coir is mixed eith perlite seoerate frok the stones, its very fluffy snd airy. Feels nice. I was wondering if thst sounds like s good mix and if it would be beneficial to add garden lime and worm castings. Thanks.
You went through the trouble of getting these ingredients and the plants should appreciate! That sounds like a good mix from the way you describe it. I am currently experimenting with worm castings on peyote (I know they work great on san pedro), with various proportions of castings, so I still can't confirm if they like it, but so far they all seem to be doing well. Hopefully in the future I will be able to recommend an ideal ratio of castings. As for the garden lime, yes you can add a bit, it won't hurt. A lot of people swear by it. I personally don't use any, and my peyotes are doing fine. The only way to know for sure if you need some would be to test the acidity of your soil. I have never bothered doing so, and my peyotes do fine.
you can pasteurize worm castings... 145F-155F for 1 hour, you could also sterilize with a jar in a pressure cooker but that would kill much of the nutrients so pasteurization is ideal.
U mean it will kill off the benefitial bacterias (the good living organisms that survive pasteurisation & don't survive sterilisation) It would take many many hours, possibly day/s to kill most nutrients. U would have to have it dry up before it starts doing that. Which shouldn't be happening in a mason with a properly designed lid. Especially in just 1 hour.
The mix I used was red lava rock, pumice, sand, perlite and some store bought cactus soil mix. I also used a few limestone rocks in the mix and around the top. I am wondering if it will be a problem that I mixed the limestone in as oppose to just putting it on top, like I have seen others do. Worried that I overdid it on the limestone. How will I know if I need to replant?
nnnaah mainly just that the soil doesn't hold too much water, the roots will rot,, no other problems really, fertilizer is a good idea in the growing season
I've got peat moss, but I'm not gonna use that, I've got vermiculite, perlite, sand, and garden soil, will one part sand, one part garden soil, one part vermiculite, and one part perlite work?
Is it necessary to include the lime powder in the seed growing soil mix, or wait and put the lime powder in the re-potting soil mix for the seedlings when they get bigger?
Since there's so much talk regarding peyote, anybody know where I can purchase seeds? Also looking for a Bolivian Torch. Thank you for all this info. I will be experimenting with my SP and also my Penis cactus. Any tips on those guys? Or is it about the same as SP and Peyote? I read they like more water than usual cactus. The article I read said they like water more like a regular plant vs. the cacti that it is. I'm scared to try that. Lol.
U can do either. But pasteurised will retain some of the benefitial bacterias etc. Sterilisation will kill all those live organisms. Leaving only the nutrients. It's down to preferences really. Pasteurised will be great for re potting. Sterilisation will be best for growing seedlings (this way - while the pots are covered constantly for the first part of their lives, there's minimal chance of contamination in the enclosed environment).

Love these videos, definitely the best on UA-cam. In your soil recipes do you measure each part by volume or by weight?

I've potted my peyote in perlite 'sand' (the fine particles from sifting perlite) and now I'm worried I've made a mistake - shall I repot them again?
yeah lmao
Cacti need nutrients, drainage, and aeration. Yours has no nutrients.
Good work. Cheers bru

This is late but,
You can never over do it on the limestone. They grow out of pure limestone in Mexico!

What if I was to use soil from a place where they grow? Would I still need to amend a bit?

I'm not keen on using vermiculite, it retains too much water. I would personally put one part sand, one part garden soil, one part perlite.

I would just sift a little in there in the begging almost like how he’s explaining the cactus fertilizer liquid , about 1/3 recommended
This is for coco coir or unfertilized soil use pumice if your using fertilized soil
yessssssssssss

Can i cut 1 of my Pup's off my Peyote & give to my friend? If so do you have any advice or info. + i have sent you a email 😉
where can i get seeds i’m in the united states
you need to start by writing your representatives in Congress to ask them to repeal all restrictions on peyote. the sooner the better.
what the heck is that!?
It's a cactus. Lophophora Williamsii. Glad I could be of assistance
