LORE - Castlevania Lore in a Minute!
Long ago in a world where vampires don't actually sparkle, Mathias and Leon were BFFLs in Europe during the late 11th century. While Leon was a nobleman and a knight, Mathias was a so-called genius tactician. He also knew alchemy because his heritage was all sketchy that way.
Anyway, while on an expedition, his wife Elisabetha passed away from illness.
Shortly after when Leon's beloved, Sara, is kidnapped, Mathias informs him while bedridden from angst that it was the doing of a vampire.
Upon getting to the vamp's castle, Leon is gifted with a Whip of Alchemy by a well-placed old man on the castle grounds and charges in to find his lovely, pure, adorable and wonderous Sara before it's too late.
Sara, bad-luckily has been bit by her captor, Walter and in order to defeat him, sacrifices herself and allows her soul to become one with the Whip of Alchemy, transforming it into the Vampire Killer Whip.
Defeating Walter and mourning his ladymate, Leon Charlie Browned his way back to his buddy Mathias.
It is revealed that he planned out the capture of Sara from the beginning and using dubious alchemy, Mathias transformed into a stereotypical looking vampire.
Feeling a little bit like maybe it's his fault Leon's ladyface died, he offered Leon immortality and eternal broness under the veil of understanding the pain of losing a loved one.
Leon, instead, vowed that his bloodline would hunt down Mathias until the end of time.
Mathias later would rename himself to Dracula. It is this Dracula that the Belmont clan is cursed to fight every time he resurrects until the end of time. Sucky lineage bro.

The whole Castlevania series summary: "Oh, Dracula's back aaaaaaand he's dead. Oh, he's back again aaaaaaand he's dead."
But the last reincarnation of Dracula was Soma and he chose a human life, being friends with Alucard, a witch from the Belnades Clan and Julius Belmont
Castlevania 2: oh no! Drácula is dead, I need to resurrect him and kill him again
@@EvidLekan yeah, you can thank the curse that Dracula spoke against Simon.
Dracula MMMCMXCIX Hes Really Dead This time. . . . Nope Jussst Kidding
Great villain that can't stay dead
"Papa! I want to be a banker!", "No, son, you must go and become a vampire slayer.", "But PAPA!!"
Nobody would choose banker over badass hunter.
That would be Victor Belmont who wanted to run away from becoming a Vampire Hunter
@@echidknux6738 You're thinking of Richter, Victor's from the Lords of Shadow continuity. Easy mistake.
@@rokuspace Um actually Victor Belmont was introduced in Castlevania Resurrection before Lords of Shadow was even a thing. According to the description Victor wasn't interested in being a Vampire Hunter
Another possible lore: Dracula borrowed the Belmont family's lawnmower and never returned it, causing the Belmonts to swear vengeance
Ah, I see you're a man of Culture as well.
Ay I got the reference

@@alexeicooper Afraid?
of what? my family basically made me watch the final movie...i was happy for a small moment when i saw them die, then they opted for a cop-out "this is your future".
SHORT VERSION: Jojo's bizarre adventure part 1
Underrated comment.
you thought it was Dracula, but IT WAS ME, DIO!!!!
THANK YOU!!!
You were expecting a meme! BUT IT WAS ME, DIO!!!
The difference is that one family fights a man whose feud with their distant ancestor causes him to forsake his humanity and become a creature of the night, a powerful vampire overlord. This forces the family to constantly battle him and his evil influences through the generations of their bloodline. Once their feud even went so far as put time itself into jeopardy. The other family fights Dracula. I hope that clears things up.

He is a guy caught in an industrial accident in a glitter factory

until the end of time.. or you know until Soma Cruz showed up and destroyed the heart of Castlevania thus ending the fued with the Belmonts and redeeming Dracula's humanity.
Which was himself coincidentally.
Not quite.
Vlad Dracula Tepes died in 1999 during the Demon Castle Wars. He was killed by Julius Belmont. Soma Cruz gained the power of Dominance, a portion of Dracula's power. Specifically, in Castlevania lore the Dark Lord is simply the title given to the being that opposes God, and just because Soma has the powers often associated with that being, does not FORCE him to be so. Dawn of Sorrow specifically addresses this that if it is fate that a Dark Lord must exist, one will appear, though that does not force Soma to take up the role.
Leon was the main character of Lament of Innocence on the PS2 and defeated Mathias in 1094. Trevor defeated Dracula in 1476. He's the first man to defeat Mathias since he changed his name to Dracula.
i know this comment was 8 years ago but mathias didn't die in lament of innocence. he just lived on until castlevania 3 where he was defeated for the first time
@@oofman1999 @Oof Man199 Yeah, that was a careless comment by me as they never actually fought. I shoulda' said Walter. I'm a bit confused though.... this was a reply to something, where'd that post go...?
@@muthesquirrel it's fine man you learn something new everyday :)
You could have put a sign atop of Alucard saying "And me too!"
That wasn't Alucard, that was Juste.
"Hey dad why do I have to kill Dracula?"
"Because son your great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather was an asshole."
o_o
It still bothers me just how much Juste looks like a vampire/dhampir, but totally isn't. He looks like Alucard in a red long-coat.
Ruin and maxim looks like a green richter and he uses a sword I really they were realy lazy about design of the game it's pretty much copied symphony of the night but still it's a great game
True, when I see main art of CV: Harmony of Dissonance I see Alucard with whip...
+bloody 6 and why Leon's theme of all that is holy lore
*****
Honestly, it's difficult to theorize when it comes to Castlevania lore at this point. According to the reboots (Lords of Shadow), Alucard *is* Trevor. Granted, these games came far after the others mentioned.
*****
I know that. I was just saying that fan interpretation isn't even valid anymore thanks to the retcons.
What is a man? A miser-AHH MY GRAPE JUICE!
+Ace Gotta love that Frobman.
+Piotr Wojciechowski What about the frogmin?
He needs to do the Lords of Shadows Trilogy.
ENOUGH TALK! HAVE AT YOU!
Lol good one Ace
Leon be like: I will torture you! by cursing my own lineage!
"Dude, I just kill your girlfriend by playing chess with people's lives. Let's be friends FOREVER"
Mathias learned that day that Leon's not a very good friend that totally holds a grude.
Vampires don't sparkles! Amen to that!
No sorry Julius really fucking needs his own game and that game would be called Castlevania 1999
"HEY, I SHOULD GO KILL DRACULA!"
"HEY SON OR DISTANT ASCENDANT/DESCENDANT, GO KILL DRACULA AGAIN!"
"OKAY!"
That's the true Castlevania lore.
It kinda bothers me, that there hasnt been a liniar 2d castlevania for a while. :/
I really miss it, am i alone on this one?
I've actually had some really good ideas on a new Castlevania game, but why would a game dev listen to me?
There's Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate.
I have it, but its not really the Castlevania expirence i wanted :(.Ieatpaste23
I miss the classic series.
oopus4 there's also a fangame called the Lecarde chronicles (could be linked to Bloodlines but is a good fan game) two games acts as like the classic and the other is S.O T.
Trevor is my favourite Belmont.
Good choice,Mine is Richter.
Mine is Simon and Richter Belmont.
"I'll kill you and the night!" hearing this I ask myself... How does one kill a time of day? O_o totally WTF!? O_O
Just sleep. That's skipping time but it's almost the same. Or you can use *「King Crimsom」*
To anyone saying that this lore doesn't match up with LoS~ Lords of Shadow is a completely inaccurate representation of the actual lore of Castlevania. From what I see, it's more of an attempt to shove as many Castlevania names and references into God of War as possible
Not quite. LoS is an alternate timeline reboot.
"Sucky lineage bro,have fun"
That got me so bad XD
Dracula got permanently destroyed in the 1999 war by Julius Belmond and Alucard (which we don't have a game of it...) and then the castle got destroyed by Soma which was a reincarnation of Dracula. So,the classic series has basically ended...but it sucks that what we get is the very mediocre LOS series. The creator left Konami,so we may get Metroidvania Castlevania clones from him. Dracula and Alucard are far from being Konami properties.
What about the Order of Ecclesia and Portrait of Ruin? Did those take place earlier? I'm very curious to know what roles Shanoa, Jonathan and Charlotte fulfilled.
Firellius I think the Order and Shanoa are before Soma. When the Belmonts and Alucard where dormant. Someone needed to do the dirty job and so the Order was born.
Ysarc So Order of Ecclesia might have be prior to Portrait of Ruin?
Firellius Haven't played Portrait but it's somewhere before Aria of Sorrow i think.
Have u ever played any non-metroidvania game? i dubt so since u are so ignorant to believe Igarashi is the CREATOR of the Castlevania franchise
What about characters like Soma? He is Dracula (kinda) yet Julius lets him live, so much for that vow, thanks a lot Jul.
Immortality and eternal broness sounds like a pretty good offer to me actually
best game ever castlevania the symphony of the night

DaFocri nah that one is bad
DaFocri Actually most people agree it wasn't a good Castlevania. Not as bad as the N64 titles, but still not great.

Is this the only Castlevania related video in UA-cam that has +1M views?
Also, this should've appeared in my recommended two years ago!
According to Game Theory the Belmont's Curse was started by the Belmonts, because every time Dracula resurrects he would become a very big problem for near by cities, so the Belmonts would kill Dracula each time in order to be showered in wealth in reward.
What about the new Lord of Shadows lore?
Its a reboot
Lords of Shadow is it's own story line. Konami already stated that. Although they also stated that if you want to put Lords of Shadow into the story for personal enjoyment here's how: Lords of Shadow takes place before Lament of Innocence by roughly 47 years. Gabriel is the true Dracula. Walter Bernhardt was the first Vampire and is a reincarnation of Dracula while Gabriel is resting in eternal slumber. Gabriel comes back to life very briefly while Bernhard/Cronqvist is resting and the events of Mirror of Fate happens after Lament of Innocence but before Curse of Darkness. Not sure when the past events of Lords of Shadow 2 will occur yet, but I believe it will be somewhere around the 13th or 14th century in Bernhard Castle of Austria or Germany. Because these are the two countries that Lords of Shadow took place in. Mathias Cronqvist is given the powers of Walter Bernhard and Dracula in Lament of Innocence by Death. Whenever Cronqvist is reincarnated via all the other games except Aria of Sorrow, Death takes some of Gabriel's powers and lets Cronqvist basically borrow them. This explains why in the Past events of Lords of Shadow 2 Gabriel has his powers and is not weak, because his powers have only been borrowed 4 times prior. These 4 times are Curse of Darkness or the first reincarnation of Cronqvist, Castlevania 1, 2, then 3. But when in the future Dracula's powers have been overused by Cronqvist, by the cycle of every 100 years and those few extra occasion's when he was raised by Shaft or other Dark Forces. So now with his powers overused and depleted he has to regain his powers. This also explains the Castle's reactions to Dracula in modern times of Lords of Shadow 2. The castle is so used to Cronqvist being the reincarnate and not Dracula that it no longer recognizes Gabriel as the Ruler of the castle. I am assuming that Gabriel get's his mortality back some way in Lords of Shadow 2 which means that his powers gained by the Forgotten One will have no where to go but the Castle. Then leading to the story of Aria of Sorrow. The powers of Dracula don't come from Death or Dracula in Aria of Sorrow but the powers of the Castle. Meaning that since Gabriel Dies Cronqvist can no longer reincarnate and also dies.
Alternate Timeline.
Dave Johnston but.... how can Trevor be Alucard in LOS when Trevor and Alucard fought Dracula alongside each other in the original lol
i honestly dont think the two universe can co exist
I keep coming back to these videos for their music at the end.
this is the best one, dodger does a great job =D
Then alucard appeared and then everything got weird
Who is the lineup at the end there? It's Trevor, Simon, Richter, _____, and Julius. Who is the fourth?
+zingodoom Juste Belmont from Castlevania: Harmony of the Dissonance (GBA)
Not the correct order, but it is Simon, Trevor, Richter, Juste and Julius. These are all the other members of the Belmont family that are considered canon, but you probably don't give a shit.
Oh, I give enough shits. I know the confusion leading to the accidental creation of Christopher Belmont
+zingodoom Yeah, by 2009 he became a canon character because of Castlevania Rebirth. Christopher being Trevor's son and Simon being his grand-grandson for reasons I'd love to know.
I had thought that Christopher was retconned into being Trevor's brother?
You made my day.
I like the expression of Simon in 1:03 because this what I feel his face look like every time I play his games
Why not do a Lords of Shadow LORE video? There are 3 games after all.
No, lords of shadow is not a real Castlevania game, it has absolutely nothing to do with Castlevania.
It was a needed step in the right direction.
thechapmaniac4 how so?
For one thing, the games where getting atiquated and the plot was a mess. It was getting hard to coherently follow them. This reboot has done something few Castlevanias have done; made me give a shit.
thechapmaniac4 so, basically the entire cannon of the Castlevania games is "antiquated". Lords of shadow has barely anything to do with the Castlevania series and its honestly just overrated. Castlevania needs to return to its traditional linear style, MAKE CASTLEVANIA 5.
my actual name is Matthias come get me I'm dracula
Good Job. You just kindled the wrath of Julius Belmont.
Lament of Innocence (Leon's Theme) From the game Castlevania Lament of Innocence
Not to mention Eric Lecarde, Julius Belmont, John and Quincy Morris, Nathan Graves, Shanoa, Sypha Belnades, Grant DaNasty, Cornell, Hector, Isaac, Saint Germain, etc. You know... Everyone else.
AceOfShades you meant Christopher since Julius is in the video.
Don't forget Alucard (son of Dracula) banged Sonia Belmont, and finally Sonia give a birth to half vampire but a vampire hunter named Trevor Belmont, then the rest of Belmont clan was tainted with Dracula's blood.

Dude that’s not canon... You know that, right?
Can we just pretend that the Lords of Shadow series isn't canon...?
I easily can. Just pretend it's like fanfiction.
Papa Petro It isn’t it’s its own universe
Erm, it's not canon, it's not part of the main timeline as it's a more gritty take on the series for a modern audience
Amazing lore, i felt like the games played me the whole 1 minute and 14 seconds of this video.
Wow thats really interesting. I'm playing Rondo of Blood on the PSP right now, so this kinda fills in a few holes plot wise.
I must intercede for I think its unfair that quite a few look badly upon Lords of Shadow. If you look at it objectively, it is an amazing story til the actual end if you have played the final game, I'm hoping a DLC rectifies it. People say that Lords of Shadow is confusing, no actually the original canon is lot more convoluted with so many games stretching the story too far. I was a casual player of the Castlevania series, its plain fun. Lords of Shadow actually had me excited for the first time for anything Castlevania. The art style and music was a much needed change, and play style too. You can't simply keep churning out the same thing always. So Lords of Shadow definitely did somethings right and gave Castlevania series a cinematic flare, with its amazing and emotionally driven soundtrack and story. Moreover, it's the first time where the voice acting has been amazing in a Castlevania game. The art style and backdrops are simply beautiful, and one can appreciate them better in 3D environment. An immersing experience. I actually disliked the anime style, did not suit Castlevania at all! SOTN was perfect art wise.
Lords of Shadow is surely a Castlevania game, it "has" all or basic elements that make a Castlevania game Castlevania: whip, castles, vampires, undead, werewolves, goblins, trolls, and giants, what more is needed. Kojima helped to give this series the title of Castlevania because he came to the same realization. Just because a castle isn't featured for more than half of the game in part 1 doesn't mean its not Castlevania. A good story can't be restricted to one environment unless it calls for it. They want you to explore more than just one setting to keep it an enjoyable experience and a "different" one at that. It's a retelling, so appreciate it for what it is since it's clearly not interrupting the flow of the original canon. This Dracula had a much more humble beginning. His story is given in great detail with more emotions and depth, which is appreciated.
Castlevania is an amazing series, and I must confess I would like for LOS series to go on for another game or two simply cause I feel we didn't get the ending we were promised. Plus, original canon has been dragged on for too long, so in my opinion it'd be best to keep to this one for a fresh start, minus the element of constant deaths and resurrections our original Dracula is so fond of.
Thank you!

theres also alucard but who cares about him

what is this symphony of the night you speak of?

Are you playing innocent or something? If you knew Alucard, you should know SOTN. He's the reason Castlevania became EXTREMELY popular in the first place.
zhaoyun255
i'm playing stupid, since they never mentioned him, although if you're a fan of castlevania 3 you could know about alucard
*****
Yeah, that alucard also but sadly, his gameplay was pretty damn bad in CSV 3. SOTN made a complete 180 broken.
meh I prefer Gabriel as Dracula than Leon
DamiakerPL You mean than Mathias. Leon is not Drac. lol
oh yeah now I see thx, but still I prefer Lord of Shadow story line
Are you a new fan of the series? Not calling you out for liking the reboot, just simply curious. I don't have a good idea of what newcomers vs veterans of the series think about the reboot. Generally, I think most veterans dont like it because of how far it strays from the original lore, that's including me, I admit, but of course there are going to be varying opinions. :)
well i play all games from nes and symphony of the night on PS1, but i didn't play PS2 games becouse i didn't have that console and yes i must say those old games had that something dark that i love in them but first Lord of Shadow was is of the best games that i played, cool characters, lots of difrent enemies and bosses oh god the bosses in that game, they was epic and i really loved those big ones where you had to climb on them like in shadow of the colosus, the most sad thing is they didn't do bosses like that in second game, of course we had that gigant robo knight and that dragon flying snake in the end of game but they wasn't bosses they was only a stages
DamiakerPL
mmn, yeah, Ive heard that LoS2 was kind of a letdown. Like they just gave up halfway through, or something? LoS does go deeper into characters and development so thats definitely something I can see ppl loving about it. Ive always found the lore of the Classicvanias to somewhat make up for the lack of char development in the older ones.
But yeah, same here about ps2. Im definitely gonna be a late PS2 Castlevania player, whenever it is that Ill get my hands on it. Itll happen someday. lol
One life goal: Finish all CV games. They're just so good. :D
I plugged in my older brothers old NES a couple of weeks ago and tried the first Castlevania! I didn\t find it all that entertaining since I got my ass kicked and had no idea what the lore was about! Now I do, so I'll give it another go! Thanks lorechannel!
THAT... was AWESOME. *favorited*
Well Gabriel Belmont became a vampire..
Reboot.
Gabriel isn't real
well yeah, but in Mirror of Fate's story Trevor knows that Gabe is his dad and then that tension stops there, Simon doesn't figure it out. And what about the emotional angst of Soma Cruz' story? They may not be his blood relatives but Julius, Yoko, and Alucard all have to deal with the fact that if Soma actually fulfills his destiny as Dracula's reincarnation to become the new lord of darkness, they have to kill him. Plus classic CV ended literally a few months before LoS came out.
not to mention that each new generation of Belmonts is supposed to be much more powerful than the last
Gabriel is a lie (like the cake is...)
I rekon Gabriel Belmont is the most interesting of the Belmont tribe
Who?

funny vids, don't know half of the games but still subbed.
Was thinking about it for thousand times
what kind of Bullshit is this......Dracula ...being a sucky emo? Seriously? I prefer his origin in Castlevania III being a Devilworshipper
That's how Dracula became Dracula... Dracula denounces god out of frustration from losing his wife and gets powers from the devil. Technically the original Dracula was a "sucky emo"
Stephen Broida wow, that lore was better then the lore i just watched lol

One does not simply watch them again. One waits till a new one comes out.
It gets even better when one of the Belmont's goes batshit insane.
That was... just Lament of Innocence in a nutshell.
I was playing it last night and that was basically my experience with that game
Mathias: I REJECT MY HUMANITY, BELMONT!!!!
She's been BITTEN, not bit. Sheesh.
@NOTASAVIOUR I totally forgot about Laura! Thanks for the feedback...!
Until the end of time? Julius Belmont and his Dracula perma-killing beard say hi.
@aspade01 Symphony Of The Night came after this because it includes Richter Belmont who was born after Leon and Dracula didn't exist until Leon had forced Mathias' hand.
have fun
@ffvi1994 That is the name of the song. Lament of Innocence (Leon's Theme).
I think I'm in love with Dodger
that was a really good and underated game
Fantasic!
@madsli Not exactly. When Julius defeated Dracula, he also left the vampire killer whip inside Castlevania. So even though he lost such a powerful weapon, leaving it behind would seal the Castle away for good, preventing Dracula from ever resurrecting again.
.... Of course, Julius was unaware of the whole "Eclipse" business. lol
Tell that to Netflix! Because they don't seem to understand this.
Isn't it annoying when some concepts just contradict themselves?
CV 1 and 2 : Implies that Alucard mated with Sonia Belmont.
Lament of Innocence : Leon as first Belmont vamp slayer.Mathias Cronqvist as Dracula. Lisa dies of a sudden death
SotN : Lisa was crucified. Dracula asks Lisa's forgiveness.
Lords of Shadow : Gabriel Belmont becomes Dracula. Alucard appears in LoS2
Aria and Dawn of Sorrow : Soma Cruz is Dracula. Arikardo reveals himself as Alucard in DoS, looking as he was in SotN
Indeed. I hope they make more Castlevania games like Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, keeping the tradition back to 2D with good gameplay and music. Those two are my favorites.
omfg i forgot how epic symphony of the night's music was
Hells yeah.
0:06 thank god for that
I have to watch each episode twice
You forgot the part where a woman married Dracula to have the son Alucard who would go on to marry a Belmont, which is where most of the Belmonts get their power.
That's because this lore is slightly wrong. Mathias's rule as Dracula lasted until he was defeated by Julius Belmont in 1999. At this point a new incarnation was meant to rise and take the throne as Dark Lord for the next 1000 years. That incarnation is Soma - who denies his destiny. Soma's not a Belmont though.
@Deathjak5 can't remember the track title but it's from the soundtrack from lament of innocence.
@robinzuur Well yeah, that's because in Castlevania, Alucard is the name of Dracula's son. He was important to some of the games, so I wanted to know why he wasn't mentioned.
@4zho Leon's Theme from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence.
For all you who hate this lore, I love it. I found that this castlevania was WAY better than most of the 2d games! The music was so incredible, the game play was MUCH better! How can people hate this underrated game so much? This game is a masterpiece!
Jaden Wilcoxen and way better than Los
I hope they have a Amnesia or Penumbra lore :D
