    I've been using DBAN for years and it cost nothing. It comes in an ISO format that can be burnt onto an optical disk or used on an USB drive. Be thrifty and research, you'd be surprised how many good freeware programs are available.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  Рік тому

      Yep, I mentioned that in the video. However DBAN doesn't support secure erase so it's not a great option for SSDs. It does a great sector by sector wipe though.

    Glossing on the fact that disk wipers for home use are free, on an SSD I'd prefer to use the secure ata erase command... (the TWO elephants in the room you mentioned).
    The simplest way to address the issue though is to encrypt all drives. At that point even a simple quick format will render all data inaccessible.
    This works very well for new drives that may fail under warranty one may want to RMA to the manufacturer.

    if you are actually this jovial in real life I would love to meet you sir, I am one of those folks that are amused by about 99% of what happens to me in life....lol.
    I have a 100% guaranteed method of HD erasing that, if you are not concerned about the drive being used other than for e-waste recycling, works 200% of the time....... drill a 1/4 inch hole through the drive guarantees the disks have no recoverable data on them at all.
    The videos are great, the conceptualizations are great as well as the editing proving you not only know your stuff wandering around inside a computer but you are a pretty damn good all around technician for things electronic. Peace out man and thanks.

    Whenever I recycle a computer with a drive in it, I don't bother wiping it. I take a screwdriver and put a big crack through the drive's controller circuit board, making sure to crack the main chip on the board. It's highly unlikely that anyone is going to go through the trouble of obtaining a replacement controller board with the exact same firmware revision on it in order to read your data. So unless you're important enough for the NSA to be interested in you, this works fine (and it's fun, too!). SSDs are easier, the controller and/or ram chips are usually exposed on the circuit board which make them easy to destroy.

    This pertains to a SSD since they are somewhat unique in how data is stored. For those running Windows that have BitLocker, couldn't one just encrypt the entire drive (not just the files)? If BitLocker is not as secure, how much less secure is it compared to using Redkey or similar wiping methods to sanitize the drive? And for those purists that think I'm comparing this to NIST-grade wipe, that's not what I'm after since any sensitive data on the drive has already been password protected. If someone has the funding, resources, and time to get to my data, then go for it.

  • @klwthe3rd
    @klwthe3rd 2 роки тому +4

    This product has been in kickstarter phases for a long time. There were a lot of issues, as you learned from your first attempt of data wiping that hopefully has been somewhat worked out on more main stream units. My concern is that if you're wiping alot of different machines/devices you might run into that problem more often than you think. What i like about Redkey is that it allows you to wipe a current boot drive(SSD or HDD) while it's still in the computer. Most Secure Erase features from the manufacter require you to remove the drive half way through the process due to the drive being "Frozen" and the only way to unfreeze it is to remove and replace the drive. That process really sucks. The RedKey obviously gets around this issue by putting the computer to "sleep" and having it "reawake" sometime afterwards.

      @@CyberCPU I own and operate a IT Security firm and I do tons of data wiping of sensitive data for my clients. Redkey was promised(during their Kickstarter launch) to be the ultimate data wiping solution for home and business users alike. I don't disagree. I have been holding off on upgrading to their product to wait and see if it's as good in reality as in theory. Your video was good but I would have liked to see all the advanced functionality it has under the other wiping options. I was hoping they would have given you a discount code for your subscribers so we could help you too and get a good product. 👍

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 роки тому +1

      @@klwthe3rd I've been using Parted Magic for years to wipe drives. It uses DD as well as secure erase. However, it doesn't require you to unfreeze the drive.
      There might be some technical reason why it's better the way redkey does it but I've done data recoveries before on drives that I wiped just with DD just to see what I could recover and I've never been able to get anything.
      Typically when I'm wiping customer drives I set up three systems and have three hard drives connected to each system. With red key I would have to purchase three red keys while with parted Magic I just boot each system off the same USB drive considering you can pull the drive out of the system once it boots.
      I tested that with red key and you definitely cannot pull the drive out. It breaks the program.

There is Balena etcher , yumi ,isotousb,Universal USB Installer, just to name a few alternatives and you can also use or create a win pe boot environment and integrate and use something like portable apps for even more choice that are free to use. yumi can create multiple boot environments on a single drive like ventoy has the ability to boot from isos copied on the drive created by it . You obviously know nothing about how much talent the FBI has when recovering data. I have witnessed first hand in court reports of cases that went to trial where the FBI was able to get data off of broken shards of platters from a HDD. I have even read that they are able to recover data that has been wiped up to 7 or 8 times(at the time of the report). So a 3 wipe system is not good enough. I have always used the maximum 35 wipe Peter Gutmann method to be absolutely sure. Talk to the people serving prison for 25 years plus if they trust breaking platters as a secure erase option.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 роки тому

      Theoretically you could recover data that's already been wiped by looking at the platter with an electron microscope and looking between the tracks on the platter. However, it would take an enormous amount of time and I've never heard of it actually being done before. It's simply theoretically possible.
      I've also never heard of a criminal case where data was recovered from a destroyed drive. There are forensic data recovery companies that can recover data from fires or other types of destruction that don't physically destroy the drive. However, a broken platter would be incredibly hard to recover from.
      If you have a link to a case that used data recovered that way as evidence I would love to see it. Sounds interesting.

Second, your wisdom is pointless because the amount of effort it takes to restore partial data on a shattered, baked and hole-ridden platter would require you to put me on the FBI's most wanted list. The worst thing the FBI could get me on was the Commander Keen's: Goodbye galaxy I downloaded over a 9600 baud modem about 35 years ago. The effort and resources required to pull any data from the way I dispose of Hard drives would take the money they give to Mark Zuckerberg and ten times the time wasted on the whole January 6th hearings. Yes yes you unbaked potato, I read the story of Adam Lanza, but surely you can expect, the murders of 28 people, to have SLIGHTLY more evidence than a damaged Hard Drive. There is an encyclopedia's level difference between a guy stuck in the 80's gaming from a mass murder on the FBI's list.

      @@CyberCPU Apparently in the case of Adam Lanza from 2012 there were reflective parts they could read. But like I explained to the other know-it-all, the levels of drive an investigator would need to recover data from such a drive is enormous. Apparently, if the plate has enough reflective material part of the data can be recovered. Yet I have no idea how a file string, scattered over a drive, can be pieced together and how much of it is a psychological runaround to make a person confess on their own behalf. Regardless, I'm not worried about data on any of my drives because they end up becoming swiss cheese before they go into the garbage or becoming fantastic coffee coasters. The platters also make fantastic SOS reflectors.

      @@CyberCPU As part of my business I make sure to stay current on the latest data recovery technologies because I am held liable if I recommend a method and then proven wrong after the fact. When the FBI takes a potential criminal to court, the defense has the right to examine ALL evidence the government has against them. This process is called discovery. The FBI hates this because it has to divulge all its trade secrets if it wants to proceed with a case. Many cases have been dropped by the govt because they knew if they shared HOW the obtained their data, people like me who review these cases to stay current would know how to circumvent their methology. Ive reviewed enough cases of discovery to know that they can do it and the cost is NOT a factor because they have endless pools of money.

    All it appears to be doing is installing their software on the thumbdrive. Then it will overwrite the entire drive. I've used free software years ago that does that but I don't remember the name, but it takes forever to complete. It's the only way to wipe it, by overwriting. SSD isn't the same as doing a HD which would take much longer.

    • @alexanderunknown8605
      @alexanderunknown8605 2 роки тому

      Lol the best way is to erase with Gutmann algo which is 35x rewriting with zeros, yes it’s “forever” but it’s the only way to re-use hdd/ssd again but without data leaks

    Or you can complete destroy your disk and buy anew one for 17$ to give with your machine. Today SSDs are too cheap to spent money for wipers of any kind. On the other hand any serius uninstaller software include hi efficient wiper. So if you are going to spent some money , I think that is beter to invest on software like Minitool Partition or Revo Uninstaller (Pro paid editions) or anything similar to them, wich will payback it cost, as it will be used for more other jobs exept wiping a disk.
    For 90$ you can buy a 4TB HDD or 1TB NVMe SSD or 2TB SSD or 4x250GB SSDs or 2x2TB HDDs . How many drives will wipe a home user for these money to make this pourcase worth??? Even more when the most if not all mobo providers offers in bios>tools>secure erase for free and almost all drives providers offer this facility for free.

    I'll stick with Dban. All you need is a spare laptop or desktop, put Dban on it, and have a SATA to USB adapter and can securely erase, to DoD standards, as many hard drives as you want FOR FREE. Redkey is a joke, IMO. $90... what a scam!

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 роки тому

      It's actually $30. However, I agree. Most people can get by with Dban. However, Dban doesn't properly erase SSDs. It's also not been updated in years if I remember correctly.

    • @CyberCPU
      @CyberCPU  2 роки тому

      @@sgstudioofficial while it does require setup I wouldn't call it the same. Finding a Linux distro that will work on your system and creating a USB from it is a lot more work then running the red key software which does all the setup for you.
      I get what you're saying and the free alternatives are probably fine for the majority of people. However, the setup with red key is really easy.

    There are a slew of free products that will do the job and creating a bootable drive is easy enough. I hate that they would sell different versions. Just one would give people more confidence. The lack of use with later GPU's make the company look amateur.
