I'm glad someone has finally said it. Prices have shot up just in the last 5 years. The houses are overvalued in much of the lower half of the lower peninsula.
CA cannot really be compared to MI. Cali is more expensive than most every state. The CA folks moving to certain places is part of the reason for the increase in the cost of living.
I live in northern Oakland county, these low numbers don't apply here lol. I have noticed that we still have higher car insurance, gas, taxes, extra curricular activities, utilities etc than most states.
We moved from Portland OR to Northville recently, and even if locals consider it “expensive”, it’s very reasonable compared to the West Coast. Not to mention homes actually have yards here, and you can’t touch your neighbor’s wall by reaching out your window! We love it!
Nearly half of the population in Michigan are considered 'the working poor'. It's pointless to compare Michigan to other states when the people living in Michigan can't afford to live there.

It's summer and Central Texas is seriously HOT. 100+ the last 10 days, 100+ the next 10. I'm dreaming of Oakland County, Michigan 😀. I have family there and used to visit quite often when we lived in Canada years ago. Texas has no state income tax, but our sales tax is higher than yours, and the property taxes are brutal. On a $385K house (2018 build, just over 1,700 square feet, 3 bedrooms 2 full bathrooms) we bought 18 months ago, and which the county assessed at $420K, we paid $10K+ in property tax. Homestead kicks in, it will go down a bit. If wasn't for our little grandkid who lives near by ...
@roncharles7269 What you mean by "is very bad as compared to any other state"? The long winters? Cost of living? Cost of housing? People? Roads? Insurance? Schooling? I've lived in Utah, Florida and now Texas, and have visited south-east Michigan often. I miss Florida, but have no regrets leaving. I don't particularly like Texas, but have no regrets moving here. (That's what becoming a grandparent does to you!)

Saint Joseph is right next door and is consistently one of the best towns in Michigan. Awesome little beach town with great restaurants and you're right in wine country too. Tons of things to do.

That's not correct. Even compared with many other states it's affordable in MI.

Ahhh, yeah - you're in one of the most expensive zones to live in Michigan.
We're definitely a medium cost of living state now, but we probably have a lot of good rural areas that are still LCOL.
CNBC just ranked Michigan as the 9th most affordable state to live in. Still super cheap!
