This is very helpful, I am a beatboxer and we use vibration bass. Very similar but slightly different. It’s nice to see an explanation for singing primarily
I wonder why no one pointed that out but your first example in the beginning actually sounds like a very impressive 2nd subharmonic. It sounds like you start from an A#2 but instead of dropping to an A#1 (half the frequency, where the 1st sub would be), you drop to a D#1 (1/3 the frequency); which is where the 2nd sub would be. A dead giveaway that it's probably a 2nd sub is the amount of resonance you manage to carry even to such a low note. Very cool 👍🏼
Never noticed that actually! I was just recording random subharmonics for the beginning and didn't think much of it - I'll have to work more on 2nd subharmonics, then maybe post a video on how to achieve them (if I get good enough)
So.. I’ve never sang, I’ve never like, exercised my voice before, I watched this out of boredom, and surprisingly using this it was super easy to learn? This is actually so cool 😂
I had a singing coach, she couldn't do it, I did it naturally apparently, back then I couldn't produce it on command but slipped into it from time to time. Now after years of drinking and smoking it is easy. Also meditation without any goal helps.
Hahhahaha same lol I didn't even know this was a thing before like 2 minutes ago. And I just did this to relax and thought what a weird thing it was but it never hurt my throat or anything so I never looked up what it might be. 😂
1:28 I mean whenever my tenor cousin practice his part in an open air, our neighbours loved it and praised him for it. But when I tried my bass part (specially sub harmonic part) they got anxious and scared. No justice for bass LOL
Haha honestly bass singers have gotten so left out for YEARS. I feel like it's just now that people are starting to get into bass singing as a result of Geoff, Avi, Bobby Bass, Jonathan Young, etc
I'm a 17 year old bass singer just longing to achieve that BF and just make my low notes be more present and clearly heard i find your techniques recommendable Thanks
As a person who last used vocal fry to try do Tuvan throat singing, this is simultaneously very simple and very hard. Simple cause I'm very used to switching in and out of fry, hard because there's such a gentle amount of fry required here compared to Xhoomei, that I keep applying too much

Sing hoist the colors and try to hit the notes like the tiktok singers do. Its a good practice to go from higher to sub notes. That was the first time i found out i could do subharmonics i didnt even know what it was haha
this video finally made me realize that it wasn't just that I was unable to hit the vocal fry subharmonics like I see so many people do, it's that my natural register and vocal chord shape doesn't allow for it, the years I trained with chest base (for bbx) and then onto 3rd subharmonic chest base left me with a very smooth, thick, open and airy natural register, which is the complete opposite of what you want for a vocal fry, and even though I can reach a B0 and am still pushing it further, I don't have to sit and doubt myself hurting my vocal chords trying to force it to vibrate in a way it just isn't built to do, awesome video!
Geez, turns out I’ve been doing this sort of thing for years, but didn’t know it was sub-harmonic singing!? Just thought it was a cool low sound-thing. Great to know there’s proper techniques and stuff, always wanted a lower bass voice. Thanks mate!
So I don’t know if I hit the subharmonic register but I think I actually starting doing some kind of polyphonic singing while practicing this on my way home from work.
And my highest without falsetto is C5 so I have a pretty good range, but subharmonics bring my lowest down to A0 Edit: I've only hit C5 once on a really good tenor day, and it wasn't pretty so... normally I barely go up to E4 lol

I hated having a deep voice because I want to sing high notes and it takes me months of practice just to reach a bit higher but just found out subharmonics are a thing and learnt it in 3 minutes. Makes me feel a little bit better about myself
This is amazing I don’t sing but I love low vocal music but couldn’t get the low notes properly but now thanks to this tutorial I can get to the very low notes amazing
I got a really bad case of laryngitis, knowing this technique is the only way I've been able to speak for the past week, using it sparingly as I don't want to put too much stress on my voicebox. Guess it's not only useful for singing low notes haha
Coming from vocal fry screams, this is actually much easier than other techniques I've heard. That being said, I've now figured out that I need to learn how to not just dip into complete vocal fry 😅
@@ZigZagProductionStudio nah dude really thank You For the tips. Now i can hold an F1 For 10 Seconds! Before i lose it. and it's not a 2nd subharmonic because i kinda have a strong F2- F#2 chest voice.
Bro ... the frick. I was practicing forever and had a real easy time with vocalfry but never got it to stick. Just friggin hehe-ing before the subharmonic made it so stable. Thanks!
Ok as a wanna be singer for many years who can barely sing in 2nd octave without it becoming a fry scream, I can do subharmonics easily! I did spend a lot of time doing inhale scream vocals, and sub harmonics feel exactly the same thing but exhaled! When you do inhale screams you take in veryyyyy little air and so can do it for as long as you can hold your breath, and doing the same exhaled works a dream
I’ve been screaming for a while but inhales are a place I’ll never go. Always felt like I’m gonna nuke my throat. Do you prefer them over exhale screams?
I lracticed this a while back and was able to hold it in pitches and got good at it. I’m out of oractice. I focused on my regular singing which has improved tremendously but was slacking on subharmonics and was using fry at higher pitches etc. I wanna get all the benefits of mastering all teachniques and ranges. Especially now I’m in choir if I get good enough this could actually be useful.
Question. Can you give any tips to someone who has never had any sort of vocal training on how to relax their airflow/vocal cords when singing without sounding quiet as a mouse?
I really feel it when you said the anxiety part but I do terrorize my family by doing it hahaha I've already learned how to do overtones and throat singing but I couldn't manage to do subharmonics. Very grateful I'll be showing it to my nonna today ❤️
Love the videos! How accurate are phone tuners/pitch finders? I've got a pretty low speaking voice but nothing crazy, and these apps are saying I'm hitting D2 and sometimes lower in chest voice (even lower with subharmonics) but I really don't feel like im hitting notes that low. I also have zero natural pitch ability so maybe my inability to identify notes is getting in the way. Not a trained singer at all, was just curious if I was a baritone or bass and started messing around a bit

A minute to learn : yeap, I was beating my drum set in rearshall, AT thé break time bass dude played a scale that I followed with my voice and IT "unlocked" by it self. Such an amazing vibration and feeling going through m'y voice box and body
This might sound a little weird (and slightly unsanitary), but I literally did a subharmonic with my lips against my clip-on guitar tuner, just to see which notes I was hitting.
I still have a lot of trouble with useable subharmonics. I am not in vocal fry until around E1, whereas, most men are by about F2. Even now, I have a dead spot with subharmonics; my chest voice starts to weaken around G1 and ends at F1 (E1 on a good day), but to get a sub to crack at E1-G1 is very difficult for me. Now, if you want me to do a sub at C#1 down to F0, no problem... where they aren't very useful for everyday singing, lol.
If you listen to a lot of subharmonics being used, they're usually used for single notes (almost like "finales" in some songs). It takes an insane amount of practice to sing in them consistently
I practice while I drive too, but my problem is that whenever there's any uneven parts of the road, I lose the subharmonic and get thrown back to the base note. Is it improper breath control? I'd love to know so I can get better. I want to be able to do it whenever I want without worrying if I'll be able to hit the note.
I can’t tell if I’m doing subs or just very resonant vocal fry. I’ve heard it described as singing the note the octave above constantly but I don’t feel that.
I can do a video about how to tell the difference - my best suggestion is use a tuner, and try and sing a note using the techniques in this video, and see if a note pops up. Then, try to replicate that
I am following in my fathers footsteps. He is a high base and low baritone and can do a low A from what he has told me. In saying this, I wanted to learn to sing base or at least low baritone. Please forgive me if I am wrong in the naming of things, but I believe the lowest chest-note I can take that isn't completely inaudible is an E#2. I can't go lower than the second octave. The absolute lowest I can currently do without practicing, on rare occasions, is an F#1, but that is basically just rumbling in my throat which hurts after a few minutes and dries my throat out. How do I know what is a chest-note and what is a subharmonic? Is the rumbling in my throat subharmonic or is that just me being weird?
I always joke around with my friends doing a fake long burp starting from high to low then high then low again and after I watched this video, surprisingly, that's what I actually do everytime I do the fake long burps hahaha So, it's sub harmonic base. Got it! Dang! 😂
Thanks for the tutorial! I finally got subharmonics! Here’s the thing though: I didn’t realize I was already doing them. I was able to hit them before, but once I finally hit it on a different note, I realized I could already do it
I have a hard time frying. any tips I Feel like I can only fry with minimal force. Like I need to be so relaxed that i'm almost just breathginn, ont singing.
Still having problens with this. I still dont know exactly how to hold a note while vocal frying, or anything, but ill just watch this over and over again until i get it lol
Man this is hard one i still havent gotten my first note yet. I can do most other forms of overtone singing but the sub bass my brain understands it but actually doing it my body feels dumb lol
Thank you so much for this! I think I heard it for a split second, but it felt like it was REALLY quiet. I feel like any time I go into vocal fry it’s too quiet to be heard. Is this normal? Granted, my natural voice is more of a tenor, so it may not be in the cards for me anyway, lol
@@ZigZagProductionStudio Actually, I take that back! Apparently I’ve done this on accident many times while practicing low notes without realizing what it was. I’d always chalked it up to my low notes being “shaky,” but your video showed me what to look for and how to draw it out. I can actually hear it now! Thank you! I also recently discovered that my natural voice tends to have just a little vocal cry in it, which probably helps a bit, haha
I'm not sure if what I'm doing is subharmonics or vocal fry but randomly when a sing a note like for say F3 it will flip an octave lower to a F2. It sounds loud and strong. If i push a little harder and put more air into it it flips down to an F1 for a second then back to F2. Is this the start of subharmonics?
He's one of my favourites too! I actually saw a comment from him on another video on subharmonics, and he was asking whether he would get louder. Seeing that gives me hope that I might be able to sing that low
@@ake9454 You can definitely sing that low! And in terms of getting louder it's harder with subharmonics in my opinion, just because you have to both relax and push the sound a bit
Inn a good singer, but never trained to learn sub-bass. I naturally resorted to singing " *_Bo-bo-booo_* ". This gives me a plosive sound to start of with, which readies my vocal chords for the sustained low frequency vibration which ensues...
I just can't get it, I have a josh turner octave, but when I attempt subharmonic, these tips do not work for some reason, if u have a easier method, would u be able to post another tutorial?
I try to understand this subharmonic thing but... surely that weird creaky thing *is* vocal fry; if not, what's supposed to be the difference ? Unsure what any video on the subject is getting at. Ive never experienced a sudden octave drop. I'm beginning to wonder if I don't get it because I'm already doing it as natural singing, maybe ? Who knows ?
keep practicing - that will happen a lot. think of it like if you're trying to balance, but keep falling off. eventually you can hold it longer and longer without losing it
My friend attempted it, and I was like: Isn't that just croaking your voice. And now I realize that it sort of is, thanks for clearing that up, I had difficulty between connecting vocal fry with croaking
I'm a Tesseitura tenor, it kinda works i go down to audiable E1 but may i ask if it's worth it even it hurts my throat or am i doing it wrong idkk help lol
I think this video just confirmed I can do subharminic, I just have terrible equipment to record it. I can make every sound u make (and know music enough to be annoyed by pitch discrepancies.) thank you for this video. I always figured I couldn’t do it, because I couldn’t copy a recording of someone (using $$$$ mic’s, and also listening to it on $400 Bose stereos.) ughh

I can do a video about how to tell the difference - my best suggestion is use a tuner, and try and sing a note using the techniques in this video, and see if a note pops up. Then, try to replicate that
@@ZigZagProductionStudio it's popped up many times. according to the tuner, ive hit A0's and i have trouble believing it lol.
How do I do this without going into my throat singing skills
Using ee-ee-ee seems odd to me considering the ee sound requires an almost closed throat to be emitted. A (or o) would probably be a better choice.
Does this work with puberty
I always joke around with my friends doing a fake long burp starting from high to low then high then low again and after I watched this video, surprisingly, that's what I actually do everytime I do the fake long burps hahaha
So, it's sub harmonic base. Got it!
Dang! 😂
I can’t get out of the door creak I hit the note but it creaks instead of sound full
Thanks for the tutorial! I finally got subharmonics! Here’s the thing though: I didn’t realize I was already doing them. I was able to hit them before, but once I finally hit it on a different note, I realized I could already do it
What is the subharmonic? I can fry so slow, and play with. And start it on a note, and do many variances, ir is just that ??
You can definitely do subharmonics regardless of vocal range in my opinion - and it always starts off quiet
Any tips for someone who for some reason can't do vocal fry? 😢
I can do a video on that - I think the best technique to try and relax and work on doing the count Dracula sound over and over again
@@ZigZagProductionStudio That would be awesome! Thank you!
Should I be singing sub harmonics on an in breath or an out breath?
What if they are damaged? Can I not do this?
How do you know if you’re actually singing a subharmonic vs just vocal fry?
did a video about that here: ua-cam.com/video/HTLFHCzRGJ0/v-deo.html
I'm not sure if what I'm doing is subharmonics or vocal fry but randomly when a sing a note like for say F3 it will flip an octave lower to a F2. It sounds loud and strong. If i push a little harder and put more air into it it flips down to an F1 for a second then back to F2. Is this the start of subharmonics?
I only managed this once or twice
I somehow figured it on my own, maybe the harsh metal vocals are helping with the control in the throat, do you think that might be the reason?
5:41 into the video and I hit my first subharmonic such a good tutorial dude this is great
LFG!
is that bobby bass in the thumbnail?
You know it! He's one of my favorite low bass and subharmonic singers
I appreciate this video
Glad to help!
I just can't get it, I have a josh turner octave, but when I attempt subharmonic, these tips do not work for some reason, if u have a easier method, would u be able to post another tutorial?

Hi from France,
Is it normal at first that the sound is very not strong ?
I reach C2 with it but it's very little sound😮
I try to understand this subharmonic thing but... surely that weird creaky thing *is* vocal fry; if not, what's supposed to be the difference ? Unsure what any video on the subject is getting at. Ive never experienced a sudden octave drop. I'm beginning to wonder if I don't get it because I'm already doing it as natural singing, maybe ? Who knows ?
K, so my voice just sounds like a motorcycle when I try to shift into the range. Not smooth. What can I do about that?
keep practicing - that will happen a lot. think of it like if you're trying to balance, but keep falling off. eventually you can hold it longer and longer without losing it
@@ZigZagProductionStudio Gotcha. Well I appreciate the tip. Thanks man!
My friend attempted it, and I was like: Isn't that just croaking your voice. And now I realize that it sort of is, thanks for clearing that up, I had difficulty between connecting vocal fry with croaking
Turns out I alredy knew this inately but i didnt know that what i was doing was subharmonic singing
I was reading through the comments and not believing them... until I tried, this is unreal.
LFG!
What would hitting a subharmonic feel like?
suprisingly relaxed and loud in your head
I'm a Tesseitura tenor, it kinda works i go down to audiable E1 but may i ask if it's worth it even it hurts my throat or am i doing it wrong idkk help lol
I think this video just confirmed I can do subharminic, I just have terrible equipment to record it. I can make every sound u make (and know music enough to be annoyed by pitch discrepancies.) thank you for this video. I always figured I couldn’t do it, because I couldn’t copy a recording of someone (using $$$$ mic’s, and also listening to it on $400 Bose stereos.) ughh
