We should mention that women can be abusive too. In many shows and televonelas is usually SO cool when the girl slaps a guy for hurting her or doing something wrong, or throws stuff at them, and that's not acceptable either.

Wow, I loved this first episode of the podcast. It’s wonderful to see a man be so incredibly honest and vulnerable. I was blown away by Karamo Brown, what an inspiration. Really looking forward to future episodes. Thanks for creating this podcast, it’s such a great way to build on the Man Enough book, learn about other men’s journeys and bring awareness to these important topics.
That "broken crayons can still colour" really hits home for me.
I've had a stress ball for the last few years that has cracks, creases and even a small chunk missing from it. The perfectionist in me wanted to throw it away and buy a new one as soon as I noticed these things but I force myself to keep it and keep using it to remind myself that the "flaws" we perceive, are often more of a reflection of how we see things rather than how things actually are. Sure, the ball may be have some damage but it still functions perfectly fine. The damage has no bearing on its use, functionality or effectiveness.
I needed this message for how critical I am of myself. I perceive flaws often where there are none and if they are there, I see it as a superlative definition of being broken or a failure. The crayon quote will be sticking with me for some time.
Love this. Thank you for sharing. In Justin Baldoni's Man Enough book, he starts off by talking about the misguided goal of perfection. It's in the imperfections that we find the greatness of life, and its reality. You are enough.

I only found this podcast this today and I immediately shared it with my brother after watching the first 2 episodes. Thank you for giving this topic and these wonderful people a platform. The deconstruction and redefining of gender roles and expectations is something I have been passionate about for years.

For too long I waited for change that never came. When I finally broke free I was haunted by the question my children constantly asked…why didn’t you leave sooner? I lifted and build, I sought help and searched for answers for change…this podcast put it all into perspective. Intention vs Impact are deep and necessary lessons I am now learning in order to undo the damage, the mindset, the cycles that became ingrained to our everyday lives. He’s right on the money, it starts with me! The person in the mirror, therapy, books, podcasts and being receptive to people who are letting you know your behavior is unacceptable. Receptive not Defensive. It takes time, almost three years for me too, but it’s not easy. Funny, while listening I said “wow, the process for the abuser is just like the abused, healing from the damage and making changes so that you don’t hurt someone else.” I will live out the rest of my life on this journey, in order to be a better human and a living example for my son and two daughters. Breaking the cycle is possible, one day at a time! Love your podcast!!!! Blessings to you all ❤️

Before this podcast, I didn't know anything about karamo but I will say it was a very inspiring conversation. There were in fact moment where I got an akward feeling or went 'oh no somethings about to happen' but then I would stick through it and it get resolved in a mature way or the conversation would stay calm and I just think it was very inspiring to see. I'm dying even more to hear the second episode and dying even more for shawns

Hey, just wanted to express my immense gratitude for everything you're doing. Navigating what it means to be a man has been quite a journey, particularly without my dad's guidance. I've pieced it together, learning bits from my school friends. There's this aspect that some might call 'feminine energy' about me-I'm pretty emotional, enjoy things often deemed 'girly,' and don't fit the tough-guy stereotype. The tough part? I've struggled in the love department with girls. I often felt pressured to toughen up and conform to the traditional manly image due to negative role models like Andrew Tate. Honestly, that feeling still lingers now and then.
Your podcast, though? It's been a complete game-changer for me. It's like a surge of positivity every time I tune in. Your message is incredibly empowering, giving me renewed hope. I genuinely hope that future generations won't grapple with the same uncertainties about masculinity that I've faced. So, thank you. Your work is genuinely making a significant impact.

Karamo is the man I wish I had let myself try to become sooner in life. I'm only 25 yo, and his knowledge, his light, his wisdom, is one of the things I can never get tired of taking in. Also, to hear Justin, who looks and sounds like many of the guys I have learned to be wary of, talk about learning, being vulnerable, and actually listening to the words, and the experience of a gay man, gives me hope for the future of men in all societies.
I love you guys, keep doing what you do, because we need people to do it.

Watched this to learn about conversations for and by men about harmful gender roles. Thank you Jamey for bringing up how Justin was interrupting Liz. I noticed how little speaking time she got. So familiar this is, the norm. Especially knowing that she is such an outspoken person herself. How dare people tell women we need to ‘speak up’ more? Men/especially cishet men need to educate themselves on speaking LESS. Make space for non-male-identifying folks to speak, let alone be heard.
It was also alarming to me hearing two middle-aged men say they have never heard a man admit he’s an abuser. As a survivor, this is terrifying. Like Justin said, it’s the power privileges mixed with the ignorance and no demand for education. As a woman having friendships and just interactions (ex. Coworkers) who are also not cishet males, it’s hard to find someone who hasn’t been abused or sexually harassed. Maybe everyone on Earth has been? It just goes to show that if the people in power (white cishet males) are in denial and/or refuse to acknowledge this, we all suffer, generation after generation.
BUT. All of this is helpful to see and hear. It’s the reality even of those trying to better themselves and become more feminist. So it helps me have more realistic expectations. Thank you all for doing this. I most appreciated emphasizing the need-absolute need-for ABUSERS to be accountable, recognize their toxic impact and be the ones to leave. Intent versus impact. And the honesty from everyone, ex. the pillow story. I’m glad these topics common in feminist spheres are reaching a wider audience.

What a powerful episode! I love Queer Eye and the whole cast and I had no idea about Karamo's past! I love that he said 'nothing's off limit' - how many people can you find who will tell you that? It really shows how confident he is with being himself and his journey, and how focused he is on sharing his stories and lessons in order to help others. Hey Justin just watched this and loved the episode! You guys are amazing but i noticed that you cut off Liz quite a few times. I’ve seen most episodes and you’ve gotten a lot better but it’s important not to cut her off because I didn’t get to hear what she wanted to say!! 😂
So glad you enjoyed this episode. Thanks for your feedback to Justin as well. He very quickly became conscious of this at the beginning of our first season. It was never intentional, which Liz knew, but he recognized and corrected it quickly. He even apologized publicly to Liz for interrupting her in the Matthew McConaughey episode in front of millions of people when he was guest hosting The Talk last year!
This was absolutely life-changing for me. To hear someone like Karamo Brown, who has so much incredible emotional intelligence, admit to perpetrating abuse helped me see that we ALL have the potential to be abusive and that we need to deeply look at our own behavior so that we can own it and take the steps to fix it. All of us have the potential to do the same work Karamo has done. He has inspired me to take stock of my own harsh words and try to do better. Thank you for such a great conversation, it was so deep so I will definitely watch it again after some days. Still, one question - Jamey, why do you try to mark Karamo somehow as "black" and "gay" and underline it many times - from the one side it can be done to demonstrate that he is is MAN despite that, but from the other side it does not matter at all, but it does matter that he is a Human, someone who cares, and he does not have to be the "black gay man", but he is just the "Man".
I hope my comment is not offensive and would be glad if you can help me to understand your idea behind it.

Thank you for your feedback about how it struck you. This was also the first episode, so Jamey and all of the hosts have evolved in the way they approach these conversations since then.

I still wanna know what Jamie meant by "There's a lot behind that one" at 52:30 when Justin wanted to have Karamo as his wake up alarm. Was it a white thing to say? hopefully someone will answer.
I thought Justin was some kind of middle eastern like Algerian or Albanian or Lithuanian or Lebanese or something…maybe part white but not all white.
Isn't Justin Italian though? I hate to tell you but Italians are not really white lol
"Whiteness" is a definition that has evolved and been redefined many times throughout history. Justin addresses this at times on the podcast and in his book. We do need to recognize our privilege and how lighter skinned people "pass" in the society differently than others, regardless of how it's defined.
