To everyone who's commenting that I ignored the smart cubes, if you actually watch the video, I explain that I'm only reviewing 3x3s that you can use in a competition. The smart cubes are a totally different category imo. You have to think about charging the cube, pairing with an app, etc. Very different.
i saw your main complaint about the Gan mini m pro is the coating, gan sells a UV coated mini m pro now, i got one a couple weeks ago and i love it, would love to hear your thoughts on it if you can get your hands on one
You should totally do this with other cube brands as well! There aren’t as many 3x3s for company’s like MoYu that are currently on sale, but the history lesson element would be very cool to see with the other big manufacturers (QiYi, MoYu, etc.)
@Prec1pitation most of those brands never really broke the scene. QiYi yeah, in the Matts Valk days. But YuXin has always kinda been a bang for your buck budget brand. But if you really want a History lesson you should learn about DaYan. They are the reason good cubes exist today. The other ones are pretty much copy and paste. Gan is really the only brand currently innovating. Every other brand is "like oh.... Gan did this 4 years ago. Let's do that." But that's not a bad thing either. You can get magnetic core, and maglev cube for $20. The cheapest one i saw was $9.99. It's obviously not going to be as good as a Gan cube, cause there's a reason they are cheap. But they are there as an option, and that's what matters. What I don't get, is the brands still using springs with 4-6 settings, non adjustable magnets, and charging $25-$30 for their cubes.
For somebody like myself who has not picked up a cube since the original Rubik's version, this was super informative, thank you. For nostalgia purposes, I decided to get a 356RS without any magnets. And, for comparison purposes, a 356M lite with magnets. Both are easy on the budget, and should be vastly easier to manipulate than a new, original Rubik's cube.
It’s so insane how far and how quickly cubes have changed. From the mid seventies until the 2000s people were using Rubik’s brands with Vaseline for lube, then for a decade after that the biggest innovation was torpedoes to stop popping, then suddenly we start seeing all kinds of development. Magnets becoming popular was only seven years ago and now it’s weird to use a cube without them. Maglev is only like 3 or 4 years old but quickly also becoming standard. You could take a Gan cube back just 10 years and blow someone’s mind
Now you should do a video where you use all the cubes nlindfolded and try to match them with their model to see how well you know the difference between them.
Recently was able to complete my Gan cube collection (finally got a hold of the 357), starting with the Gan III and going all the way to the 13. Might make a video showcasing them, the trajectory and improvements are really cool over time
@@Tingman Pretty much haha. Though I don't have the leap/fx/other versions of the new cubes & I skipped out on a few redundant ones (Air M), but for the most part I have every Gan flagship (it's always been a goal of mine to collect them all :) Love your videos
It's crazy to see how far the cubing hardware world has come. I remember a time before speed cubes were even a thing and you had either rubiks brand or chinese knockoff. I vividly remember sanding pieces down individually to replicate loosing spring tension since it wasn't technically adjustable. I remember using construction silicone spray lubricant because cube lubes weren't a thing. I remember building a cardboard jig to be able to put my cube on a cordless drill so that I could break in the springs and work in the lube. I don't remember which ones came first anymore but when the weilongs and dayans and moyus started hitting the market it blew my mind. I still have my first Zhanchi. Meanwhile now I pretty much exclusively use gan smart cubes. Crazy to think back to the good old days.
@@idiot528 I got them directly from China, so it wasn't quite that much. I think it was like only $50 for the 13. I still use it, I just like the 12 better.

I think the air SM and the 356 Air M are the only Gan cubes that really do feel like... Gan cubes... Gan really shifted their focus from smooth flexible cubes to something like the 12 Maglev
The RS is the first speed cube I ever owned, and it's real nostalgic for me. Despite the fact there are no magnets, it's honestly a great cube in terms of how it turns.
Besides the Valk3, it was my first- and from what I've learned (except for OCLL-U and Z-perm, all of 4LLL) I usually average in the range of 50 seconds to a minute!
So this is how im reminded how long I have been in the community!! The earliest cube that's shown in the video is GAN SM. But I have solved and played around with cubes that were produced atleast 3 generations before SM, namely GAN 357, 357 Ultimate, 356, 356 S, 356 S V2, 356 Air, 356 UM and then finally 356 SM! Damn that was a long time ago!! Also did you know that there is one rare GAN cube called GAN Air 473, there are only 7 of these in the entire world!
It depends, If You Sweat From Your Hands a Lot Then Get UV Fr Extra Grip So It Doesn’t Slip, But Matte’s Pretty Good, But It’ll Probably Turn Into Glossy Plastic If You Use It A Lot And Get Sweaty Hands, Then It’ll Slip out of your hands, so UV Is Better
The only GAN puzzle I own is the 11 M Duo, because of that old comparison video you did and I found one for only 21 US. It doesn't feel as smooth or fast as some of my other puzzles, it almost feels like there's something wrong with it in terms of how much noise and texture there is in the turn, BUT something about that makes it easier to control, so I get faster and more consistent times on it than I do other cubes that feel much better when turned slowly. Also I finally got a bunch of things from DailyPuzzles, and got one of your signed cube covers!
I know, there's just "something" about GAN cubes that really suit my turning style. I just can't get as consistent times on any other brand, even though I've honestly tried! And thanks for getting the signed cube cover! :)
Hey tingman, another amazingvideo !! I think you should do another one of these but with every Gan product other than it’s 3X3’s. Keep up your amazing work and I love watching your videos !!!
I got myself two 356 M's at the start of this week before I saw this video. Going to have them tuned slightly differently. Also got the GAN Megaminx because my old one has a screw that keeps popping. Hopefully the 356 M can get my solve time under a minute on average, I'm right there on the line. I'll be satisfied with 1 minute solve times, I don't need sub 30 second personally.
The 356 RS is honestly not that bad, even tho it has no magnets in it, it's still a really good cube to use imo. I've been using it and maining it for around 2 years and even with no magnets I can still get decently fast times with it.
I'm a proud GAN Fanboy. I have the GAN 13 Maglev rn and I really love this cube. It just turns perfectly. The funny thing is that I got with a 356 M Lite to my first ever competition and someone sold me his used 13 M Maglev. I bought it before my first round and it got me from normally 20.5s averages to a 19.0s Ao5 in the competition. That cube did wonders to my times and now I'm at 17.5-18s looking forward to hopefully compete a second time in april. I feel your pain of adjusting it but I went with the strongest magnet setting possible (which should be stronger if you ask me) and second lowest compression and center travel.
The 356 M lite was my first 3x3 Gan cube and since I can't really buy any of the other one's due to the price right now, I'm glad that you still like it. Since your such a good cuber, that says alot about my first 3x3 Gan cube.
When I started cubing, I bought an original rubix cube from walmart, and I decided I wanted to get faster and the first speed cube I bought was the first cube you showed in the video and I wanted the magnet version but it wasn't out yet. I bought that as soon as it was out. Felix had just set a record with the prototype magnetic version of it that wasn't available. I have stopped cubing on and off over the years but have stuck with it for the last 6 months and finally have avg of 100 of 24.7! I'm almost 39 years old, and it's hard to practice with work and such.
Great vid, as usual. But you messed up the time of release of the GAN 12 M series, it should be 2021 ig instead of 2012. I guess you just forgot while making such amazing quality content. Cheers!
While listening to this video, I scrambled and solved my MoYu Meilong 11x11. Edit: a month later, I played the video again, and this time I actually watched it and took in the information. Just so you don't think I consider Tingman to be background noise.
Hey Ming! This looong video explained a lot! but I still have a question ; Do you recommend the 356 M over the Tornado V3 Flagship? And also please tell me the need for lubing in either cubes i.e the frequency of lubing and its lasting nature.
Hard to compare those two, the Tornado V3 is the best that Qiyi has to offer while the 356M is mid to low range for GAN. So the Tornado is most probably better. Lubing really depends on what lube you use and how you turn!
It's October 2023 and my main is still a Gan 356 Air SM. Mine however came with two containers of nuts, each containing three sets, plus an additional set that came preinstalled, for a total of seven sets, and each container was triangular in shape, and a pain in the ass to open without all the pieces going everywhere. I couldnt be bothered to try all seven sets, I used the blue that it had preinstalled until just a few days ago in 2023, when I decided to try swapping them to the yellow, which was the recommended setup when this cube came out. I honestly didnt notice a difference. I decided to order a more modern cube with connectivity features so I can begin learning CFOP and Roux, I developed my own algorithms that allowed me to take my solve times to 30s, using my own method of solving that is unique from any method currently being used but, I want to see if I can develop even faster strategies by combining my own method with that of CFOP and Roux. My choice was the Gan 12 UI Freeplay, and since I was already spending too much money as it is, I bought the Gan halo timer + mat combo with the silly robot that Gan makes. My only concern with the cube purchase is how loose the cube will be. I havent used lube in my 356 Air SM ever, and it plays really well, never locks on me (my turning style is super accuracy first, speed second), and Ive adjusted the tensions using a digital torque meter so I can make sure every side is tuned to the exact same required turning torque (the nuts do not have any way of making sure the torque is exactly identical on all sides). Everything I have read says that the 12 will be a good cube, hopefully a worthy upgrade, and if they make a smart enabled version of their later cubes, Ill consider purchasing those.
Oh gosh… I see some cubes that I’ve been tempted to get at local stores but resisted… And I also have just gotten some old cube releases recently so this is really a timely and interesting video to me. And I also have a Gan problem so high 5!

Tingman is the truest Gan FanMan
Great vid, really helped me in choosing which cube to use. I think you missed one, though. There is also a Gan 12 Maglev With a Frosted finish.

This is going to be an amazing video. Tingman your videos are the greatest treat for cubes on a Saturday
I approve of this video. Great stuff, mister!

im too observant
what do you expect to be down here?
Oh gosh… I see some cubes that I’ve been tempted to get at local stores but resisted… And I also have just gotten some old cube releases recently so this is really a timely and interesting video to me. And I also have a Gan problem so high 5!
