      Haha I'm glad you think that's a good thing. I wonder sometimes if I should be using cubing lingo to describe the turning feel - "crispy", "buttery" etc, but then I figure so many people would have no idea what I'm talking about. (I don't even know what those words mean half the time myself haha)

    I have a video on solving using a pretty old Rubik's brand. It was pain. If that was hard for me, I can only imagine how much harder the 5x5 will be. 100% agree not to buy old Rubik's brands. By the way, this is totally unrelated to the video, but I have a few questions.
    1. How do you balance your main work with UA-cam and cubing?
    2. I average about sub-24, but I can't get faster because my F2L is not too efficient. Do you have any tips for that?
    3. How did you get the name Tingman?
    If you don't want to answer or it's in an older Q and A, it's totally fine. Great Video!

    • @Tingman
      @Tingman  2 роки тому +8

      Thanks! Not sure when I'll do a Q&A next so I'll answer those questions here :)
      1. It's tricky, I generally make a lot of videos on school holidays (I'm a teacher), but I recently also went from full time to part time teaching to carve out space for UA-cam (and some study) so that helps. It's not easy, I'll say that much! But it's not too bad.
      2. F2L is a tricky one. I started off by printing out Jperm's F2L document and then learning the subsets that interested me the most. I never finished the whole thing but I just chose the cases that I felt I saw really frequently and made my way through it that way. Walkthroughs really helped too.
      3. Just a nickname from ages ago!

    Ok I've been cubing for about 15 years now. Over the past 15 years I've seen the Rubik's brand evolve a ton since I started cubing. Back then when I started cubing the Rubik's 2x2, 4x4, and 5x5's where one of the fewest options for actually speedsolving. But The Rubik's brand for the most part has been near the bottom of the line for recommended puzzles to speedsolve with. But with the new Spinmaster acquisition a few years ago Spinmaster has actually been improving the band some. To the point where we're actually getting truly good decent Rubik's brand puzzles. But the 5x5 hasn't really been updated that much in the past 20 years. Other than their core puzzles like the 2x2-5x5, keychain 3x3, and the snake they've released a ton of other puzzles. With those other puzzles they've only been region exclusive and/or only be on the market for a certain time period before getting discontinued. But overall they make some decent puzzles that are in the middle of the road in terms of speedcubes. Where there just above those crappy cheap Chines $1 cubes but not much better than the good proper Chinese Speedcubes that you can find on Daily Puzzles. Also Rubik's tends to overprice some of their puzzles mostly the 4x4 and 5x5.

    Ive been cubing for almost 3 months and my first 3x3 solves were almost impossible because i popped the cube and put the corners and edges in the wrong orientation and gave up, but on the next day i decided to flip or twist em and i solved them for real! but since the 3x3 was my only cube i decided to use cubing apps to solve cubes that i dont own, And up to this day, i solved 3x3 shape mods (like mastermorphix, Trajber´s octahedron, etc) a 8x8 rubiks cube and a master kilominx which it took me 70 mins because of the lots of edges and easy to missplace the centers. my father bought me a 4x4 rubiks cube. and i do cubing virtually while i wait for my father to buy me some cubes. i sub 20 at the 2x2 (with a 4x4) my 3x3 Pb was 1:02 (because it turns so bad and worse than a rubiks brand which i do it with PLL, Cross OLL and Begginer F2L) and on the 4x4 best was 7:00.
    Tingman´s videos always entertain me 👍mostly because of his unboxings, reviews and challenges.

    I don't know anything about Rubik's brand, but I am an Intuitive Slow Cuber. So my first focus was 2x2x2, and I have 8 different models. I'm also autistic, so the 'mouthfeel' of the turning is actually a big deal. For a sensory person like me, the way it turns is actually a big deal, because a good feeling puzzle will make you want to do it more. I don't know if you've seen those stimming toys with clicker buttons, but man, some of them have this perfect click and it's a perfect puzzle. I saw you said one was buttery; I gotta say I have one that I feel is greasy, and it's fine but not my favorite. I really like to switch it up. For me, it's not about speed, it's about the sensation of working out the puzzle. I just solved what I think is the maximum unit of parity on my pyraminx this afternoon and I'm just annoyed because I don't know quite how I did it.

    My favorite Rubik's brand product is probably the "Rubik's Pyramid" (it's a Pyramorphix.) Where I am (U.S.), it's somehow cheaper to get pretty decent MoYu cubes than Rubiks'. Their Pyramorphix is fairly priced and slightly cheaper to go pick up a my local book/puzzle store than it is to ship another brand's online. Also, it's the most unique product they still produce (or at least from what I've seen) especially being an official shape mod.

    Hi Tingman. Just watched your vid hours ago, but I do observe that the 3x3 that you presented in the vid is the revision before the current one. The current revision has the Spin Master logo at the front of the packaging. Shawn from SpeedCubingReview reviewed that one a while ago and I was able to buy it a few weeks back. The current revision has the tiles and is somewhat rounded. It is comparable to the non-magnetic speedcubes that I currently have. I don't know why you aren't able to get hold of that one (maybe it hasn't arrived there in Australia yet, or it has but it was sold out before you got to it).
    Very informative video, BTW. Thanks for uploading it. I wish I can tell you about the other Rubik's brand cubes I have, but that will be a long and winding explanation...

    • @Tingman
      @Tingman  2 роки тому

      @@Tingman: Thanks for the reply. I wish UA-cam can let one upload photos on comments so I can show you the exact cube I am talking about. But as I already mentioned, Shawn did a video talking about the new revision and you can check that one. He was able to magnetize it and get decent times.
      I also have the revision with the ball core (it may be the one you showed, but I cannot tell) and compared to the new revision, it is almost moves somewhat smooth but not too fast, at least without lube which makes it somewhat faster. Looking at it now, the ball core revision is good but not anymore as nice as the current revision that I now have. Definitely, both perform better than the last "stickered" version; the stickered one I own from 2013 currently feels gummy and hard to turn now; lube makes it turn better, but I've had a hard applying it through its crevices, which is why I don't use it now as often as my tiled cubes.
      I also forgot to thank you for especially reviewing the "current" 5x5 that is in the current packaging. It confirmed my suspicion that Rubik's still sells the big stickered 5x5s even with new packaging, similar to the Rubik's brand 5x5 that I bought in 2013 with stickers that have peeling film. In one product photo that I searched recently, I could somewhat tell a sticker on the 5x5, but was never sure. I'm of the opinion Rubik's and Spin Master may still be figuring out how to apply the tiled design to the current 5x5 speed cube technology.
      At least they have been doing something about the 4x4. The revision before the current one (the last "big 4x4" revision) has the outer layers turning simultaneously if you're not holding on the cube, a problem apparent solved with the current 4x4 revision. J Perm illustrated this well in his video.
      I apologize if this reply is long, but I have to get these observations based on my cubes out of my mind. Once again, thanks for making this video. Cheers! 😀

      @@nanami_kamimura Detailed replies are the best kind! I just checked out Shawn's video and yes, I get what you're talking about. I'll look out for it when it hits Australian shores. I'm pretty interested to see how Rubik's brand cubes continue to evolve. They seem to release a decent amount of "new" products every year. Some just repacked or remodeled, but some totally innovative and I always admire a company that wants to innovate.

    My best time was like 3 minutes on a normal rubix 3x3 until I upgraded to the little magic, got it set up and broke in and it made a big difference (I use beginner method) I have now been cubing for 2 years and can solve a megaminx, 4x4, 5x5 and void cube if I don't get parody, not quite square-1 yet, and I can almost solve a piraminx

    I own 3 official Rubik’s cubes:
    -The 2021 one
    -One from 1980’s or 90’s
    -One I’m pretty sure that’s from way before that, the stickers are peeling, it’s super sticky, it can’t turn that well, and the logo is probably the first one
    But then again I have a GAN cube so it doesn’t matter

    • @rk31
      @rk31 2 роки тому +1

      One can’t be from the 1980s and have one from way before that, as it was realeased I. The 80s, so it’s probable from the 90s
