BP has a lot of chargers in the UK
Most of them are very slow, many don’t function properly / at all.
All of them charge you over 2 x the price of Tesla’s chargers.

My first warning was always: don't let big oil buy out the charger networks.
They will bring charging cost per mile up to gasoline equivalent, and their profits will go up an order of magnitude, all while lobbying to make municipal cheap charging illegal.

They can't just increase the price, people would drive to Tesla and other competitors to charge.
They could do the reverse, lower prices for a year or two to make everyone lose money. They can afford this but most competitors can't.

    • @nerdbikes3841

Which is why anyone who can afford it should install solar panels. Even after paying the monthly solar loan bill I still realize a $200/month profit over my old gas car fuel bill. And by my math the solar will pay for itself only after 8 more years (2 years already) for a total of 10 years. After that, the solar is pure gravy and the free fuel net cost that comes with it. Keep sticking it to big oil by using solar.

It's the EV charging network that will ultimately determine the success of electric vehicles, not the vehicle range. It's a common misconception that EV range is the elephant in the room. It's not. Not at all. The elephant in the room is the EV charging network rollout. i.e. the geographic distribution and rate of rollout of EV super chargers.

    • @jacobnunya808
      @jacobnunya808 10 місяців тому

More electric vehicles means more charging stations which mean more electric vehicles and so on. People who do not go on long drives would be fine charging at home which means there is starting point for this cycle even with no charging stations.
Both the range and number of charging stations matter, neither is THE elephant.

When you call their helpline, if you get through, more often than not they can't connect to the device. Not a massive sample, as I don't do much mileage away from home, but I now avoid BP, if at all possible.

Don't forget that BP were a very early player in all things energy - with a Solar cell (and panel) manufacturing in Homebush Bay (Sydney) for a long time - basically taken out by the Chinese drive to undercut the world with cheap labour subsidised production and sheer volumes - -Thanks to breakthroughs out of UNSW improving the efficiency of silicon based PV cells .. (Sadly More innovation lost from the developed countries - well we sure got lots of solar panels out of "the deal")...
So despite ignorant crowing by many (re. "Big Oil" backtracking), Energy giants are definitely into making money, long term from energy, whatever form it takes. The energy companies own locations in many postcodes, ensuring people are buying coffee to-go, or hotdogs and candy regardless of their end-user-energy-choice.
    (Ideology doesn't matter, profits do.)
At least tis shows that Tesla is open to being a supplier fotr 3rd party operators, maybe we will get generic Electric powertrains yet (a Model S post-plaid "crate" power-train could be an interesting proposition for e-hotrodders (or hybrid systems in different applications.)

Perhaps the Tesla charger sales deal is also tied in to supplying the actual energy... if Tesla sells its chargers cheaply with the provisio that Tesla supplies the elctricity to them, this will rapdily expand Tesla's power division and boost the installation of solar and mega packs as a by product and provide a customer base for those Tesla home power walls and solar packages across the states that do not have cross state power transfers while the Biden green $$ subsidys can also be drawn upon by BP to pay/ofset the costs of this deal.

    Does anybody remember Bud Light?
It was a beer that Anheuser-Busch used to sell that was #1 in America for 21 years,
before they did something that pissed off their clientele, and now it's hard to find someone
with a Bud Light in their shopping cart at the supermarket.
Well, BP might just be doing a Bud Light - pissing off the folks who fill up their gasoline tanks
with EV superchargers, and it could piss off both parties, as it has turned out for Bud Light
I stop by a Phillips 66 about once a month - used to stop by once a week when I drove our 4-Runner.
I stop by to buy lottery tickets, and as I drive up, sometimes some "good old boys" are standing around the parking lot and giving me a sneer as I drive up our Tesla Model Y. There is some tension out there.
Oh well, I don't go to BP stations since they are always expensive but convenient...

It’s a diversion Tactic Tesla employs when it is in crisis. These deals are done daily, with numerous charging parties tritium, the huge electrify America network etc. Tesla is in poor shape and they always do this . Plummeting sales, the hugest drop in share market price surpassing all other car markets even GM. Loss of market share to Kia, byd and Toyota . The cyber Truck disaster with huge problems plaguing and postponing its production date ( huge vibrations they can’t seem to rectify amongst major build quality and panel alignment ) escalating manufacturing costs with falling sales . Chinese supplier problems ( most Tesla components come from China) . Postponing indefinitely any expansion plans like the Mexico factory. Foreseen cost overruns and expenses down the track to produce the cyber truck . As Elon calls it a mistake that will be costly . Key staff jumping ship including engineers, AI and others . To top it off the Chief Financial Officer has just walked away this week. 19th 3rd from last as the Least reliable cars as voted by consumers Tesla has a lot of woes

As somebody who works in the insurance industry, we have a disturbing discovery. Electric cars catch a fire, not only destroying the car but setting houses and apartment buildings on fire.
This technology is not ready yet. And we're considering not insuring these vehicles.

@ala-hc4rx The problem is from an insurance point of view. It tends to happen when the car is off and parked in the garage. And the difficulty of extinguishing the fire.

Gotta wonder if Tesla also did this because they’re starting to roll out V4 chargers now so they can afford to sell these V3s.
