      People should absolutely ruck on a field and do varied footwork drills, forward, backward, side to side, spins, strides, jog...... And do it with 200 pounds. But only for a few minutes to start. I would even say 300 pounds is okay for a few minutes once or twice a month.
      If you aim for a minimum, you build a minimum body.

    • @sasquatchrosefarts
      @sasquatchrosefarts 5 місяців тому

      In fact, 5, 10, 15 miles target is a terrible idea. Choose a super hard off trail course that's only a few hundred yards..... and near assistance, in case you get hurt. And do it once a month . You are suggesting junk miles. They only need a long ruck every couple weeks. They need rest to build. You don't grow while you ruck.

    The 80, 90, 100+ lbs are the guys like me are the ones who are Wildland Firefighters. Specifically, your helicopter rappellers and smokejumpers. We often get inserted in the most rugged terrain and then have to pack out all of our gear. That is typically 100-150 pounds of gear being hiked for 3-12 miles. Our bodies need to be conditioned for such a feet.

    In training I don't use any blister prevention. When testing new boots I start off with very short rucks and then gradually increase the load so I can build up tougher skin on the most exposed parts of my feet. When I do an unknown distance ruck or a timed ruck I'll then already know where I need to use moleskin or if doubled up socks are sufficient with those particular boots. The same principle also applies to running shoes on (ultra-)marathons.

    • @graysutherlin7568
      @graysutherlin7568 5 місяців тому +3

      The skin toughening theory is interesting to me because some SF guys say to build calluses, while others say to grind them down with a pumice stone and lotion your feet every day so that your skin's healthier.
      I don't know enough about feet to know which is better, but I thought I'd offer both points of view.
      Either way, you're advice about rucking with unprotected feet is really good. It lets you know where your hotspots form.

    After I returned from the Nam I graduated from the University of Texas I joined the 12th Group. During a training I as the 18E I had a 100 lb ruck. After a few miles we did a security halt. I just bent over with my hands on my knees. I was told to get down and face outward. I simply told the guy tat if I get down I would not be able to get back up, so basically fuck off. When I was the 18Z of ODA-1256 I was the first to arrive at te ORP and waited for the rest of my team to return. When all arrived I started to get up but my body just shut down, I was 42 at the time. Paul, our 18C, said, “pops you need help getting up or would you like for me to carry your ruck?” I replied, “fuck off bitch!” I rolled over and did a push-up to my knees and with the aid of my M-16A2 I was able to stand up. Paul was buffed and just 28; but then when we started to leave for the SP I fell behind. I knew it was time to get out; I was a determent to my team. So I got my H identifier and became an instructor at one of the NCO Academy’s. But I would still rush with a 55lb bag of sand I just didn’t want to become a sloth.

    Your comment on an episode of Band of Brothers still resonates with me. Regarding Captain Sobel, not being fired but transferred and promoted. While everyone doing the work below suffered consequences. I didn't serve, but seriously considered it. As the Class of 2001 many of my friends joined up for obvious reasons. I decided a guitar was better than a gun in my hands. Judge as you will. Some became Army Rangers, some Marines, some in the 101st Airborne in Afghanistan and Iraq. Respect.

  • @denisberte778
    @denisberte778 5 місяців тому +16

    Sir, enjoyed your advice on prepping for the ruck march; I think the 40-45 lbs is on target for a training weight. The human body is made out of bone, muscle & gristle, you need to train wisely so that you don't incur unnecessary injuries that may put you out of the running. I went through the Q Course in 1984, still remember that 18 miler we had to do under 3 hours and with about 40 lb ruck. What helped carry me through was about 15 years of weight training under my belt, squats, leg extensions and leg curls, paid off in big dividends. I'm not the final word on anything, but maybe a moderate weight training program could be incorporated into the Ruck Training Regimen. Keep up the good work sir! You truly are making a difference in the world by helping motivated young men get though the course. As they say, "....the uniform changed, but the mission stayed the same...." God bless and good fortune in the new year. Regards, Denis Berte' USMC/SF

    First, I will say, excellent job Buck. Seriously well presented, well organized information, articulate and accessible. I can tell you were likely a good Green Beret indicated by your demonstrated mental flexibility, cultural humility, clear communication, (likely) fantastic leadership. Second, I regularly watch a fair number of.....Military Channels(?), in fact a bizarrely large number of them given who I am. What I can tell you is if you watch enough of them, you can see the differences between the various SOCOM Cadres. The nature of the work Green Berets do, produce people like Buck and Kurt, people who are good at leading, good at working with other people, even people different from you (specifically so).
    I've worked in both Organizational Psychology (Corporate and business leadership) and Mental Health Psychology. There is considerable crossover, again perhaps bizarrely, between books on "Business Excellence," good general practices and leadership literature and Mental Health literature (particularly CBT-based therapies: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). Both areas of literature talk about the importance of being able to deal with, as Buck noted, "Negative Thoughts," particularly when under distress, stress, and duress. Thus, the advice Buck gave about varied workout routines, planning for and attaining harder goals so that your mind knows you can do it. The fact is that when the US tries for "Heart and Minds," with "Combined" forces, they send in people like Buck and Kurt.
    Finally, I will say that during my youth, I did a lot of backpacking, camping, fishing and small game hunting. After a summer season of backpacking, again, just like Buck noted, I was seasoned and fit specifically for carrying that pack. I would make minor adjustments, know when to make them, how to shift the weight around, etc. Practice helps make it second nature......regarding a task that otherwise isn't encountered in regular life. I believe that is why Buck is emphasizing it. Push-ups, abs, weights, running, these are all part of what most people think of when they think of fitness and workouts. Plus, these are easy to do anywhere and don't require that much in the way of special gear. But Rucking isn't like that and I think the "Ruck Trainer" that FNG came up with is genius. Of course, you can just go with the Buck method of throwing rocks in a backpack.......(bad as_ dude).
    .

    100% right. Never watched this channel before but what hes saying is exactly how it is. I had the toe and heel cups removed from my boots for ruckin. Dont ruck more than 45lbs. It worked great for CAG selection when ur doin the long walk...over 40 miles. Selection really is easy. There are only a couple events that actually get u officially kicked out of SFAS based on Army standards. The rest is up to the Cadre and how they see you if your a good fit for a team or not. There are chics goin through the course so no looking at that booty while ur doing the STAR course. Remember, during CAG selection when u get to the rope bridge and they tell u that u can use roads, dnt go left and go up the mountain. Go right and follow the coal road. Just a heads up. lol.

    Most people are not used to just walking around with a ruck on their back during normal daily activities. Wear your ruck during each day while doing your normal activities. I recommend 55 lbs while doing your daily activities, including sitting down to standing, climbing stairs, short movements, just have it on most of the day. Get used to it being on your back and being able to think clearly with the added weight. If you get your typical 10k steps in and you have the ruck on, you will get used to having the weight on your back. Some people say to build up to that weight, I do not agree with that. Build up the time you can wear 55lbs each day, try it multiple times during the day, minutes at a time if needed, but you need to be used to wearing that much weight all the time.

    1. I successfully went to SFAS in Oct 1993. The ALICE rucks were always 65 lbs. That means you're adding an LBE with water and rubber M-16 to that 65 lb backpack to the total load.
    2. Stop mixing terminology. US Army Special Forces falls under the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) umbrella. However, ONLY US Army Special Forces can call themselves "Special Forces." SEALs are SEALs, MARSOC is MARSOC, Rangers are Rangers etc. They are all Special Operations, but have radically different pipelines for entry and are specifically chartered for different missions that recently overlap.

    Guys should be learning how to properly pack, adjust and carry rucksacks in their training.
    I feel the ruck trainer takes this aspect of learning away. Plus a lot of the stuff you need for the safety element of rucking should add to the weight you're carryng anyway.

    • @FNGACADEMY
      @FNGACADEMY  5 місяців тому

      you cant learn to properly pack your ruck without your issued equipment, you got radios, antennas, 240 ammo, 556, E tool etc to practice with? didnt think so..

      @@FNGACADEMY You can simulate most of that by using stuff like weights and water. As long as you pad it out with stuff like sleeping bags and spare clothes.
      I think the ruck trainer is a good product for other uses, like beginners to rucking or people training after an injury in a less rugged environment. But if you're doing an 8 mile ruck around isolated countryside, it would be reckless not to bring foul weather gear, spare food and water if something goes wrong.

    At the risk of sounding like a sissy a video talking about how to deal with the insecurities that people have going in would be great. I feel like I'm capable and I really want to become a green beret and I'm putting in the work to get there but sometimes I'm like well what if my best isn't good enough? Quick tip. Will pay off I promise. Don't roll over to stand unless you are under fire or something. So you are sitting with your ruck on , slip your hands as far back as you can towards your ass. Kick with your feet and do a situp, simultaneously pushing with your hands. You will pop right up, even with over 100lbs. Do it

    I don’t agree with the training weight recommendation. In the Norwegian army, in the recon platoon 30 years ago, we carried ruckus weighing in at 90 pounds regularly. The sucker who carried the radio, even more, But the team shared that responsibility, so we switched. The sniper team, who traveled in pairs, had even more weight!
    We where between the age of 18 to 22, and no one in the platoon got seriously damaged because of the weight. We cross country skied in difficult terrain, tactically, for as long as 15 to 30km during night to reach the possible op positions. We even climbed with that ruck. Never ever did we do an exercise with rucks below 80 pounds - not counting the amo water gassmask or the fantastically reliable AG3.
    We we were just enlisted boys at that time, not a professional army, although attendance in the recon platoon was voluntary, and only the most fit and intelligent would be allowed beyond recruiting.
    The winter conditions in the north of Norway can be very unforgiving if you choose to test it without a well filled ruck..

    If you can't afford the FNG ruck trainer, I the cheapest large ruck I found was an ACU ruck at Army Navy Surplus.
    I honestly think you'll get more training value by physically packing the items you would put in your ruck in SFAS every rucking session. If you don't have those items, just put a sandbag or a weighted blanket high and tight (where the ruck trainer's weight is) and cram the rest with blankets so it doesn't slap around.
    Now, I did that because I'm a college student who's saving his money for good boots, I still think the ruck trainer is a great product because:
    1: my surplus ruck has broken twice, and I need to order replacement parts.
    2: packing and unpacking my ruck to the right weight is a hassle, I usually lose sleep before rucks because I forget to prep.
    So, a surplus ACU large ruck is cheaper and more realistic, but the ruck trainer is giving you a lot of convenience for the price.
    Love your work guys, you're the reason I'm going SF. Can' t wait for the boot to drop.
