    I’m really interested in learning to make some gear, but I’m curious about the reasoning. Specifically, is it cheaper to MYOG? What would the raw materials cost to make this plant as shown? Seems that similar pants from (online outdoor/co-op mega store) might be in the $50-80 range. Is this all about the pride of making your own? Or is there a substantial cost benefit as well?

      Factoring in time it’s not cheaper. By making you get something with better quality materials, custom fit, self made pride, a new skill, and a hobby. Price of store bought, fabric sources, fair trade, and company ethos are all viable considerations. Choose what matters to you.

      look for sales on materials, When polartec fabric is $5 a meter, the material cost of the hoodie is $10, nothing better than making something that fits you right. These patterns are easy to use especially with the videos. Buy inexpensive fabric when your learning.

      you dont get anything cheaper (thanks to exploitation of the workforce in the fashion supply chain). but: you get higher grade materials if you know what to look for. and of course, making your own stuff is completely customizable. make any changes you like, and even change the pattern to your liking (or to fit your body).

      Custom fit is worth so much more when you a tually experience it for the first time. If you take a look around at all the body shapes. You'll see the same shirt and pants design is created to fit as many people as possible, which you may not realize if you have never worn others tailored to your own body shape. After making my own clothing I can't even find myself buying even "good deals" because it's just too tempting to make my own clothes for the superior quality and fit. Not to mention the epitomy of custom style. You can pick the design of course! And EVERYONE wants to know where you got that item (I even make my own shoes and that's definitely a topic if interest) and you say 'oh I made it, I like the superior fit.' to be of trite phrase, "their minds are blown" or "boggled" by the fact that clothing can be made, rather than bought. An epiphany of sorts. Perhaps reintroducing the idea that self sufficiency and resourcefulness is indeed a part of consumerism is worth the additional time and/or expense if fit does not factor in.

    I made these pants this past weekend out of the lightest weight Alpha. My finished product is 91 grams! I sized down two full sizes to get a legging type fit in this super stretchy fabric. I'm very pleased and intend to use these as sleep pants and an additional warm layer when hiking which will allow me to bring my lightweight hiking pants. Layering will give me options for those days that get down below freezing and then warm up to practically summer time temps. Sadly, I probably won't get to try that until next hiking season. I'm planning to make the DIAS next. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next. I hike with my dog. Any plans to make dog gear? I'd love to MYOG her a pack.

    Can you adapt the pattern to remove the pockets? Might shave a few grams off the weight for backpacking 😄!

    • @LearnMYOG
      @LearnMYOG  4 місяці тому

      yes can use the pocket lining to fill the opening in paper pattern then simply cut front and back legs. I find I never wear pants or shorts that don't have pockets so ymmv.

    Working on this now...in the video you use serger alone for most of the main seams. The written instructions appear to recommend conventional straight seam (3/8" SA) first and then finish with serger. Is the "serger-only" method" adequate? I"m using Polartec Classic200.

      Ya for sure. Serger only for majority of seams is what I prefer, but a serger is not required. How you construct it really depends on the seam finish you want. 4 thread overlock is adequate for construction. The seam allowance is still 3/8” but your serger will trim excess (leaving a 1/4” seam or whatever your machine is set to).

    How do you wind the extra cones for the serger?

    • @LearnMYOG
      @LearnMYOG  2 роки тому +2

      Just slide the paper roll over the chuck of an electric drill and let it rip. Hand feed the thread on as the drill runs. Just be sure it winds onto the paper roll in the same direction as the source spool as the thread is spun polyester and has an inherit twist.

    What thread do you use for your serger for these?

      I buy maxi-lock thread for the serger. This info and more is free on my website in a massive beginner Hero 2 Zero article at LearnMYOG.com

    How would this fabric compare to wool or cashmere product? I make my own outdoor sleep clothing from old wool business suits from thrift stores, they provide a lot of heat. However, recently I was barraged by an animal rights activist in a very large urban park about my "choice of murderous styles" and this person insisted that the "north face" polyester (plastic) clothing indeed warms the body as efficiently as animal based clothing. I have a metabolism disease that will bring me to hypothermia in even 65degrees F and have not found it to be true that petroleum based clothing products compare to animal based clothing products. Maybe I'm doing it wrong? I've even tried insulating with seran wrap and still nada. Also, I've lived outside for extended periods of time and tried many things. Also, great music taste.

      If you want to research weight vs warmth performance, its a deep hole. Starting with google for "CLO of apparel fabrics" or "CLO of wool" will get you off in the right direction. Personal experience is likely more informative than statistical.
