  • Oil companies don't want you to know this awesome trick! This is how to select an ATV, dirt bike, or motorcycle oil because it's important to get a wet clutch suitable oil. Don't just use regular automotive motor oil in a vehicle with a wet clutch. This is the cheapest and best oil! OILS BELOW:
Oils For My Trick (JASO MA):
    ● Shell Rotella T4 2.5 Gal: amzn.to/2COiMUR
    ● Shell Rotella T6 1 Gal Synthetic: amzn.to/2QjLULM
    Official ATV/Motorcycle Oils (10W-40):
    ● YamaLube: amzn.to/2qWq5an
    ● Honda Pro GN4: amzn.to/2qSmUk1
    ● Kawasaki: amzn.to/2Ofat9W
    ● Mobil 1 Racing 4T: amzn.to/2CTQs3j
    ● Royal Purple: amzn.to/37cTNIH
    ● Lucas Motorcycle: amzn.to/35am6Ge
    ● Maxima: amzn.to/2KqrrRK
    ● Motul Synthetic: amzn.to/354dOiW
    ● Castrol Actevo 4T: amzn.to/2QpnT66
Just read the back of whatever jug of oil you want for JASO MA/JASO MA 2! Shell Rotella oil is the most popular oil for this oil hack and it works great. Don't risk your wet clutch slipping and burning up.
***Make sure you check the amount of oil you need. Some of these oils are only available in cases of 1 QT jugs and not 1 Gal jugs.***

I used Rotella for years on my 2001 Yamaha FZ1 but I always noticed my shifting was notchy and neutral was hard to find. These things got worse as the oil got some mileage on it. I tried Mobil 1 4T just to see and the shifting issues immediately went away. But the bike ran a little hotter according to my temp gauge. Switched to Royal Purple Max Cycle and it's awesome. Buttery smooth shifts and runs cooler again. I eventually found out that although Rotella will work, some bikes get shifting issues with it. After my issues, I've heard the same from many other people. Although a lot of riders love Rotella. If it's good for you, great. Shifted like crap on my bike. I'll pay extra for RP now because the bike is a 100 times better with it.

I’ve been using Rotella in all my motorcycles & atvs for over a decade from a Yamaha R1 to small dirt bikes it’s awesome oil! It wasn’t until a few years ago that they finally got Rotella JASO ma approved I was using it before it that approval. It’s the friction modifiers that they use in car oil to improve gas mileage that’s bad for wet clutches.

I was using Rotella it before it was JASO MA approved It costs them$$ for the approval. Rotella was approved after years of pressure from the motorcycle community. People realized that it wasn’t an energy conserving oil and wouldn’t make your clutch slip.

If it doesnt say Jaso or ma2 its still ok to use on wet clutch if it doesnt say energy conserving. Energy conserving is an additive for modern cars that will make you're clutch slip. So for example the first 3 or 4 10 40s you looked at would have been ok to use on motorcycle also. But I do believe jaso, ma2 is even better might have additives in there to resist against gear mesh breaking down the oil early. Deisel engines have alot of gears in them so it has additives to protect oil breakdown due to gear mesh so that's perfect for motorcycle engines and transmissions.

    • @MattsShop

I don't know. Is is still okay to use? I prefer to use oil that has the right specs. I have read horror stories where guys have burned up their wet clutches using the wrong oil.

My shifting on my Yamaha water-cooled V-4 common sump engine/trans would degrade after a short time when using Rotella 5W-40 or 15W-40. I now use only motorcycle oils. They're not hard to find. Price is really not a big issue for me. The best motorcycle oils I have used in my Yamaha are full synthetic: Amsoil 10W-40, then Mobil 1 10W-40 and Supertech 10W-40. The last 2 are at nearly every Walmart. The Amsoil held up the best for a lot of miles between oil changes. I would not hesitate to use the Supertech. Best full syn sleeper oil out there for lowest cost!

    Hi Matt,
Just letting you know that this isn't some sort of trick at all. Companies that don't write down the JASO spec, probably don't have the official approval --> therefore don't write it on them. These (official) specifications costs alot of money and not every engine oil you showed is specifically for ATV's or motorcycles.
Make sure to use high rated oils and leave the "Walmart Brands" because I can guarantee you that they don't have the official JASO spec, and claim to be the same level as.
Greetings from (An oil company in Europe ;) )

    • @MattsShop
      @MattsShop  3 роки тому

I figured that out after I filmed this video. The Rotella T5 doesn't say "JASO-MA" on the bottle, but apparently it meets the spec. People forget, it is expensive for these companies to get these certifications put on their jugs of oil.

A word of warning about running Rotella T in a high performance modern 4 stroke - These oils were not designed to be shared between the engine and transmission. Oil has a very hard life in a 250f or 450f motor, especially in dusty, wide open desert riding with a lot of shifting. In race conditions, the oil will shear down to a lower viscosity in 1-2 hours of ride time. So your 5w40 rotella becomes 0w25 in racing conditions. Which means lower oil pressure, galling, and potential engine damage. There was a thread on thumpertalk a long time ago (that I can't seem to find now), where a guy with a yz450f did an oil analysis with blackstone labs and did (I think) a couple hour oil change intervals on Rotella Dino and Rotella T6, and both sheared down viscosity, to the point of needing to be changed, in around 2 hours.
Just as a sidenote; I ride a '05 YFZ450, and initially ran Rotella T6 in it. During a weekend trip at Glamis, the 2nd full day there (roughly 3 hours of ridetime at this point), the shifting became notchy, the clutch was starting to slip, and the engine (especially the top end, cams/valves) were very noisy. This might have been a fluke, but the fresh cam chain that I put in before the trip was junk after that weekend. I pulled the cam chain out and it already had binding links, and there was noticeable galling on the cam bearing surfaces and cam journals.
Can you run this stuff in a China pitbike, a xr250, or a 400ex? Sure. No problem. On a 60hp race motor that's supposed to be rebuilt every 25 hours? Not in my opinion.
    -Doc

The only point I can see that you made is people don't read labels. Unfortunately some people could read the label and still don't have a clue. Some oem oils that are rated for wet clutch don't say it on the label. Pretty much everything in stores will have proper specs on the label.if you read something on the label and don't know what it means Google it. In most cases the label and info on it costs more than the ingredients in the bottle. There are no tricks most of this info is govt nandated
