  • A few years after its introduction, the Chevy Trailblazer is back with a new look and a bunch of new features. But there's a lot of competition in this compact crossover class. You could also look at a Volkswagen Taos, Mazda CX-30, or Hyundai Kona just to name a few. So what sets the Trailblazer apart and what's this ACTIV trim all about? Let's hop in and find out.

I just bought the trailblazer LS AWD (about $27k) last week after turning in my Volvo XC60 - totally different driving of course, but I'm liking it! I've gone from easy luxury steering to almost driving a truck lol I figured that's because they over inflated the tires to 43 lbs so I'm going to take 6 lbs out of each. The stereo is pretty awesome, love that I can turn my head and see all around when changing lanes, yes, the windows are big! I like the display, it's much easier than my volvo to navigate and another thing - there's a new safety feature, when you step on the brakes the cyclops brake light in the rear flashes three times to grab the attention of drivers behind you and let them know that you're braking. I've noticed that tailgaters have backed off quite a bit which I'm very happy about. Road rage isn't my thing so I don't mind that they think I'm actually tapping the brake three times and I could possibly be a nut behind the wheel. A downfall is the leg room in the back seat, luckily I just cart small kids around while babysitting. Another thing I like is the turning radius and the steering is very responsive. Another downfall with the 3 cylinder turbo, don't try to jump into traffic because there is definitely hesitation which I had actually read about. Scared me a couple of times so I'll just wait my turn. I've only been driving it for four days now but it's already becoming comfortable. It is roomy inside and I'm getting used to the change. I recommend it! But do consider the hesitation, it's a little slow off the line until the turbo kicks in.

Great review! Love my trailblazer but feel 35k is just a little to steep for a subcompact SUV

In the beginning of your segment, you called the trailblazer, a compact crossover by the end of the segment you’re now calling it a subcompact crossover. There is a difference between the two which one is it?

A subcompact is the smallest class of SUV you can buy.
A crossover is usually a subcompact car that's made into an SUV form. Like the corolla cross looks like a corolla on the inside.
Crossover usually means something the size of the HR-V, Corolla Cross, Trax, Trailblazer, etc. with 130-160HP
A subcompact SUV is things like the RAV4, which is basically the SUV version of the Camry, CR-V, Sportage, Escape, Equinox, etc with 170-205HP
Then you got midsize Murano, Grand Cherokee, Highlander, Traverse, 4Runner, Blazer, Durango usually with 250-400hp, then full size like the Armada, QX80, Wagoneer, Tahoe, Expedition, Yukon, etc. usually with 300-500HP
Calling them a "compact crossover" is probably a habit. Or maybe some crossovers are smaller than others? I don't know know much about them.
      Unless it's a midsize or full-size with a v6 or v8, I don't even look at it.
I bought a 4cyl once and I will never make that mistake again.
Extremely weak, incredibly slow off the line.

Is this a compact or sub compact? Compete with Rav4 or Corolla cross?

It's a fantastic car at the 25k level, not so much at 35k.

The RS is a better trim, has leather seats , heated seats, 19 inch wheels, and looks more luxurious than the active

It's partially due to the size of the vehicle. It's bigger in person and the heavy interior. The seats feel better quality than most of their leather that they've used. The doors closed very nicely everything around the vehicle just feels heavier. They do have a lot of plastic still LOL

Test drive one yesterday, activ trim. I agree though. Feds want cars smaller engines for fuel economy but my 1.4 Cruze gets 33mpg hywy and a long time ago my 2.2l cars got the 33mpg and the smaller engines are a disappointment and the engine is made in Korea. I love the way the body looks.

I don't like the fact that they've spelled "Activ" just like Mazda.
Disclaimer; I'm no Mazda fan boy, just pointing out the obvious.

Toyota corolla cross has airvents at the back in their base model. C'mon chevy, I really love the brand but toyota is just outplaying you.
