    *Fun Fact:* Nate Stevenson explained that the setting of a high-tech futuristic world combined with an old, medieval-type atmosphere is meant to symbolize how even though the world has evolved so much, such issues as discrimination and prejudice that have been present throughout human history remain ever-existent.

    • @gryphonvert
      @gryphonvert 11 місяців тому +23

      Right! That while 1000 years passed, and they advanced so much, the medieval trappings (knights, laser crossbows, etc.) symbolized the way they *have not* progressed past their... well, their past, and their fear.

    • @rmg480
      @rmg480 11 місяців тому +11

      Regardless of subtextual meaning or whatever, it makes so much sense in-universe, because we see that when Nimona appeared for the first time, everything looked pretty standard medieval, but after ONLY 1000 years, they have technology we don't even have today, so we can assume their society, due to being completely closed off and in peace, technology grew so much faster than in our world, so it makes sense for cultural things like knighting and real monarchy to remain, as society did not need to change so much culturally as they did technologically.

    • @michaelradi5902
      @michaelradi5902 11 місяців тому +7

      Fun fact : At the beginning most of the characters wear a mediaval outfit, except for Nimona wearing a more modern one.
      At the end everyone has more modern outfits.

    One thing you catch on rewatch is that Ballister, while being actually in-universe gay, is meant to be the closeted queer person, in contrast with Nimona being the loud and proud queer person. Every time Nimona wants to do something flashy and show off their shapeshifting, Ballister always pushes back and wants to take a more inconspicuous approach, something that doesnt draw attention to themselves. Nimona says it outright too during the prison break:
    Ballister: And why should I trust you?
    Nimona: BECAUSE IF YOU DONT YOUR GONNA DIE IN THIS CLOSET!
    So while a lot of this movie is Ballister learning to understand and accept Nimona, its also about him learning to accept himself, and Nimona, seeing her old, scared self in him, tries to be the catalyst that makes that happen.

      Yeah. I love that she's wonderfully herself and the issues come from the outside world. She doesnt struggle with who she is, she knows and states it clearly: "Im Nimona". The trouxe comes from other people not understanding it and jumping to fear/hatred

    About Nimona's "true form": I don't think she has one. During her flashback just like she became a bird to be with the birds, a deer to be with the deers, she became a little girl to be with Gloreth. This is, of course, just my interpretation, but I don't think we get any indication that a "true form" exists.

    the “innocent people will die” to “so will the monster” reminds me of legislation against trans people using bathrooms, having access to healthcare, playing in sports are also used against gnc cis people, intersex people, or anyone who isnt in the very strict ‘normal’. that trying to ban a large group of people from basic rights will always hurt more people.

    • @gryphonvert
      @gryphonvert 11 місяців тому

      Absolutely. We've been seeing it all along. Even if you are afab and identify as a cis woman -- the idea that someone else might think you don't LOOK "feminine" enough, or aren't dressing feminine enough, and could try to force you into an examination of your naked body to "prove your gender"? Well, that's just sexual assault, right there. Gosh, we're ALL so much safer, aren't we? (sarcasm) (Although, it goes without saying that even if all of this hatred and paranoia wasn't winding up hitting unintended targets... it would still be wrong. It's not just a matter of "if you try to ban trans people from playing sports in their gender, you will wind up hurting 'innocent' cis people" -- trans people innocent targets too. They aren't at fault for wanting to define their own existence. Either way, though, the collateral damage from the intended consequences has been happening, and continues to happen.
      "GNC" can be a somewhat liberating term, but at its core, it is about giving some amount of power to a societal concept of "gender presentation" that we have basically been TRYING to throw out since... forever. We make gains, and there's backlash; then we make gains again. In the 19th c. it was women riding astride bicycles that threatened gender conformity. In the 30s and 40s, it was women wearing suits or trousers. The 60s and 70s did a lot to try to change the societal definition of gender conformity, and then there was a conservative backlash against that in the 80s (with Reagan and evangelism on the rise). It swung back a bit in the 90s... it's been swinging back and forth for a while. People have always been hurt over it -- but we're hearing about it more now, which is a double-edged thing, I guess. (In that, it's better that we hear about it more, and talk about it more, and *push back* against it more -- the victims of it aren't always just left alone to deal with it.) Like, what *IS* gender "nonconformity"? Is it a woman who has a short haircut? A man who has long hair? A woman wearing jeans? Someone whose features just don't look the way this OTHER person thinks a "woman" or "man" should look? Where does that stop? It stops with giving anyone the actual power to both pose the question and define the standard at the same time.

    What’s hilarious, as someone pointed out, is that if the Director had done nothing, Nimona wouldn’t have found Bal and none of this would have happened. The Director was the crack in the wall. What’s that saying? One often meets their fate on the road they take to avoid it.

      In Greek mythology this would be hubris: being prideful enough to think one can circumvent what the gods had decreed. But the Greek mythology had a miserable take on life. I prefer to think of it as she had this fear that was totally in her head and her inability to recognize that it was a fear born of her own imagination caused her to become the crack in the wall (a wall which never needed to exist) and also the monster that came through that crack.

    One of my favorite things about this movie is that Nimona never has a "true" form that we see, but rather _every form she takes_ is her true form in that moment. It's a great touch, and not one you often see with shape-shifter characters.
    Also, that Monopoly scene is _straight_ out of the comic, up to and including the fire breath. I love that they included it.

    22:20 ND Stevenson did write Nimona before transitioning. I still have the Nimona copy, where he used to be known as “Noelle” Stevenson.
    In the newer prints with the correct author name. ND wrote some notes at the end of the book. Where he states that Nimona was important to him. It was a period of his life where he was still figuring himself out and he felt a huge connection to Nimona. Also the original comic it’s much grimmer

    What I find interesting is how Nimona has changed over the years. When Gloreth was her friend, it seems to me like she was the shy, more girly one, while Gloreth was more of a fun-loving tomboy. And in the present, Nimona's much more wild and energetic.

    • @gryphonvert
      @gryphonvert 11 місяців тому +5

      You know... I sort of have to wonder. IS this a children's film? Is the original webcomic / graphic novel (which is much more bloody, and grim in places), for children? Or is this really just an all-ages film, rather than targeted at a particular age group? (I don't mean to single you out or suggest that you're wrong. It just made me think. Animation is so often *regarded* as "for children", but it's a medium, not a genre. While this movie has wonderful comedic chops, it has a bunch of themes that are very mature. Which, itself, doesn't mean that it isn't for children, because children are MUCH more able to absorb and think about mature themes than people give them credit for.)

    Director is truly the representation of all the people in real life who have pure hatred against those who are different than them. People who are racist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. people like the director are just so obsessed in wanting to be always right and never wrong and always trying to make different people look like a danger when in reality people like Director are the true monsters.
    Also Director's death is so satisfying because she was so damn desperate to kill nimona so badly even if it meant it could kill her, but in the end it was all for nothing because nimona got the last laugh by coming back alive while director is long gone and dead 😂

    My interpretation from the flashback to when Glorith was a kid was that Nimona has always been a shapeshifter and doesn't have like a "true" form or not one that was highlighted. That that girl she turned into was the first time she turned into a girl when she first saw another girl (Glorith) and she was just trying to fit in somewhere. So I'd say no her as that red headed girl was not her "True" form. Its just what she chose to fit in with people.

    :0 It's here! My Saturday is set!
    Spoilers below!
    Nimona is a menace to society, quite literally, but I guess it's a shield she made up to protect herself from people who would call her a monster. She's afraid of getting hurt again after *spoilers* her friend deemed her a monster all those years ago. It's interesting to more that her "monster" form had no claws and no teeth, she never meant to hurt anyone. Unfortunately people don't see it like that.
    BAL!!! AUGH, I cannot tell you how happy I was finding out his VA was (British) Pakistani!! You don't see a lot of Pakistani characters around in media really, let alone one playing a queer character! As a queer American Pakistani myself (Ace 🖤🤍💜) it was so exciting to hear And Ambrosius VA is also East Asian (forgot what country, anyone know?)
    Another thing to note is *spoilers again* her final form: the Phoenix. Phoenix's are known to be creatures that can die and be reborn. Nimona took that form after her attempt because she knew the blast of the cannon could potentially kill her. But because of her final form, she gets to live all over again.
    Loved this movie and all it's themes, and I'd love to read the original comic by Nate sometime, I have heard it's very different than the movie.

    You know, despite the fact that Nimona drew herself skewering guards as a rhino, after Bal insisted he wasn't a villain and that she shouldn't kill anyone, when she was busting through the palace or whatever getting Bal out of the jail, she shifted into a rhino with a broken, blunted horn so she couldn't skewer anyone.

    I think Nimona’s pronouns are she/they.
    She didn’t have a problem being called a girl. She said “I’m not a girl, I’m a shark!” when she was shark-shaped and she only had an issue with Ballister calling her a “little girl” as though she were a defenceless child in the same scene in which she stopped a circular saw with her arm.

    Possibly one of the best movies to do a first movie reaction to.
    Edit: The flashback is probably my favorite scene in the film, as well as one of the most heartbreaking. And the moment Gloreth turns on Nimona speaks very true to the idea that hate is learned, but also brings to light that the idea of your parents always being right and that you need to always listen to them can be very harmful and damaging. Gloreth was clearly raised with the understanding that her parents are right, and so when they challenged her idea of who and what Nimona is, she folded immediately. This entire film, everything that happens to Nimona, is all the fault of Gloreth's parents. And I hate them for it. I obviously feel bad for Nimona, but I also feel bad for Gloreth, too, and I would be interested to see if she ever questioned her actions or if she ever remembered all the fun she had with Nimona later in her life. We don't have to see that, of course, but it would be interesting nonetheless.
    Edit 2: Also, I love that throughout the film Nimona gives away small pieces of her backstory. There's the prologue, obviously, and several short lines about how she feels, and then her flashback is taking all of that rolling it into one, with the revelation that she was Gloreth's monster. But at the same time, it's still surprising to everyone that the little girl was Gloreth. I watch the movie now thinking to myself how obvious it is, but when I watched it for the first time it came as a complete shock. Such good writing and payoff.

    • @NickCTorres
      @NickCTorres 11 місяців тому

      i mean, Gloreth's parents where totally right, they found their child playing with a fucking bear that turned out to be something even worse
      beyond the symbolisms, Nimona is not a minority missunderstood for being different, is an unknown creature capable of great harm, the fact that she turned into a little girl with sad eyes doesn't change that, if anything that would make her more potentially dangerous and mischevious
      people that pretend that Nimona should be accepted and integrated out of nowhere have never even been close to a regular animal in the wild
      PS: why or even how in the hell you, as a little child would question your guardians truth?

    • @DarthTingleBinks
      @DarthTingleBinks 11 місяців тому +1

      @@NickCTorres Regarding your PS first, it's quite simple. I've always been aware of the fact people can be wrong, regardless of who they are or their arbitrary authority status. I think EVERY child should question their parents if they think something is wrong, and it's exactly how I'll teach my children.
      Also, in the context of Nimona, Gloreth literally told her parents she was her friend. Her parents were possibly rightfully afraid of a bear who could shapeshift into a girl, sure, but considering the fact that they literally saw Gloreth playing with the bear and that the bear wasn't at all attacking or being harmful toward her in anyway, they should have thought twice before immediately rejecting Gloreth's notion that they were friends. Especially because they've also seen Nimona around in her human form, and they KNOW that her and Gloreth were friends.

Its so easy to love this movie whether you're in the queer community or just support it, the music is good, the representation is good, and so are the implications of Bal struggling to be confidently homosexual and "out of the closet", which by the way, is totally relatable. I love love LOVE the fact that everyone who has felt the pain of oppression can relate to Nimona. If you’ve faced discrimination, if you’ve been judged before anyone even knows you, you can relate to Nimona. Nimona can represent the pain of pretty much any minority, and this movie HURTS when you’ve experienced that pain. I’m a queer trans neurodivergent person, and I felt Nimona’s pain. That one scene YOU KNOW WHAT SCENE represented perfectly the feeling of giving up and wishing to just end it all. I’ve been there. And I have NEVER seen that represented that perfectly in cinema. This movie isn’t just representation for minorities. It’s a representation of WHY discrimination against minorities is so dangerous. I will always love Nimona for giving us that.

    Honestly, I think this is the best movie I've seen in a decade. Easily one of my favorites, even if I don't think it was perfect (it makes no sense that anyone could think Nimona was framing the director, when she was clearly pretending to be Ambrosius during that recording - I mean, Ambrosius should know that he wasn't there and the Director didn't stab him, so how can he blame that on Nimona when she took the blade in his place?).
    Sadly, there are a lot of people like the Director in the world, and like the movie showed, they're a threat to the lives of every person on the planet. They'd absolutely murder an entire city just to kill one person they don't want to exist...

      I agree with the other commenter that it's at best unclear that they uploaded anything *except* "I framed Ballister, I killed the queen", with a tight focus on the Director's head/bust. It doesn't even seem clear whether they uploaded more of the Director's monologue about her thinking behind her actions (the queen "questioning Gloreth", the "crack in the wall" thing). It's not clear either way. But since the only thing we see Ballister showing the Director is her bust, that also somewhat supports the idea that the recording only shows her, and not "Ambrosius".

    Sorry in advance, I can't just make a short response to any reaction I watch in regards to this movie.
    Also, this is my first time watching one of your reaction videos and I'm so happy it is as I loved seeing your thoughts and feelings and ideas when it came to Nimona as a character and the story within the movie as a whole. Also, as a nonbinary trans person, thank you for being someone who's open and understanding and accepting. Its always good to see more people with that mindset in the world.
    The way this movie is done is absolutely fascinating to me.
    Nimona has so many amazing moments that hurt my soul but also resonate with me and so many others so beautifully:
    "Kids grow up being taught that they can be heroes by driving a sword through the heart of anything different, and I'M the monster?"
    "I don't know which is worse. The fact that people want to drive a sword through my heart...or that some days, I just want to let them."
    Ballister also has great moments throughout the movie. Going from calling Nimona a monster, to asking and trying to understand what its like to even live their life as they are. This also leads to one of my favorite moments in the movie where Nimona compares the need to transform and the relief from doing so being similar to "that feeling when you really need to sneeze." Its such a great way of explaining a necessary need that you still can't control, but feels amazing when you're able to release it.
    Near the end of the movie, when we get to see "Kaiju Nimona", I honestly love the fact that we can see Nimona does not go out of their way to try and hurt anyone. The worse thing they do is attack the ad campaign that's targeting children and trying to brainwash them into buying and playing games that incentivize killing monsters.
    I also always get chills when Nimona's quote from earlier comes back right before they give off that horrifyingly real wail. It always hits me deeply.
    Ballister goes from- "You're a monster!"
    Then to- "What does it feel like?"
    Then- "You never told me you could breathe fire. ...Metal."
    Then- "You're not a sidekick, you're a Mo-!"
    And finally to- "I'm sorry. I see you Nimona. And you're not alone."

      Genuine question (as I haven't read as widely yet as I'd like) -- is he still using she/her, or has he started using she/they? I had heard someone say the latter, but that's second-hand. That still means that using "her" for Nimona is not wrong; and sticking with "they" isn't necessarily wrong, and using both at various points isn't wrong.

      @@gooeydude574 You know, this is a really good question. As much as we would all (probably!) like to see more of these characters... .I have a kind of hard time thinking of where exactly the story would go from here. It's very self-contained. On the other hand -- Nate finished writing the webcomic over 10 years ago. So much has happened since. And I think we see that reflected in the way this adaptation was done, since it's quite different from the graphic novel in various ways. So I would never say never -- especially if Nate felt that, having sat with the story being completed for 10 years, having worked on this adaptation, having done other things in the meantime (like She-Ra), and just... having lived through this past 10 years... that he might think of more story he would like to tell, branching off from this. "...the pizza itself gotta be really good for the pineapple to work..."
    That's... kinda true of most topings, honestly. It also helps if the _pineapple_ is really good, which _again_ applies to every other topping. If the crust is garbage to begin with, it really doesn't matter a lot what you put on it, same with the sauce and cheese. Once those three are in place, toppings can actually matter.
    I find fruit on pizza can work nicely as mixing salty and sweet generally does (there's a reason we like salted caramel, for instance, or that there's salt in every cake recipe). Pear, for instance, or apple works nicely.
    "...I love when a creator puts themselves into their characters..."
    You have to be _really_ careful with this. Done well, it works beautifully because the character is always going to be more nuanced. However we've seen it done _badly,_ too, where the character is a self-insert on a power trip and the entire thing becomes _extremely_ boring because it's just them saying "aren't I great". No, you're not. You're a person. We can have fun with your struggles or who you are as a person, but selling this self-insert character as the best thing ever is just... bad. (I look to Rey of the Star Wars sequels, Hanna in the latest Indiana Jones, perhaps even Wendy in the latest Peter Pan. They _all_ have someone putting themselves in there... and the work is poorer for it.)
    "...I'd love to see more of them..."
    ... Why? Story is finished. The only way to 'see more' of them would be to have the story take place during this movie, or else prior to it happening. The society that rejected her has changed, the walls are broken. There's no _story_ to go forward with. You'd have to entirely invent something that's not been shown _at all_ in the movie so far in order to go forwards.
    I hope that if there _is_ anything more, it's because they have an _actual_ story to tell and _not_ just because it's popular. _Far_ too many _really bad_ sequels have been made as cash-grabs trying to make money off of the fame of what came before. This scenario doesn't strike me as one that can be really open-ended.
    One _possible_ future development would be searching more into Nimona's past. It _could be_ that she's not unique, that there are others like her, but she was separated from them/lost her memory of them, or similar. It wouldn't be about _acceptance_ of who she is, she already _has_ that, it'd be about finding her people... but that's not as needed in a world where the society already accepts her for who she is, which makes the drive to find out... far less compelling for _us._ I think it might be compelling for _Nimona,_ of course, but it'd be hard to write it in a way that would translate for anyone else, because we don't tend to have that same problem. We aren't simultaneously in a situation that accepts us _and_ seeking 'our people'. As such, I don't really see it.
    It seems, from the way it's written, there _are_ no monsters out there, it was just Nimona, so we can't have the 'continuing adventures' of them. It would have to be an _entirely_ different vibe. Perhaps something that _might_ work, but makes little sense, is if the knights became just a regular police/guard force (which it seems like they do, maybe, there's no show of them generally going after criminals), in which case their new adventures could be them solving crimes... but it would be hard to write it _and_ is it _really_ connected to this story at all, or is it just a cash-grab based on this popularity (a thing that rarely works)? Why would Nimona start investigating stuff? Why not just start whole new characters with the same writing style and not try to leech off the popularity of this?
    One of the things that Japanese animation does _much better_ than most of ours is _knowing when to stop._ Story's over, that's it. Stevenson seems to understand this principle perfectly. She-Ra ended after five season _not_ because it was unpopular, but because the _story_ was _over,_ there was nothing left to do. Sometimes we have to know when to let go.
    ...
    Another thought that just occurred to me would be a prequel, showing that _Gloreth_ wasn't that bad, either. That she drove Nimona away to protect her, and made her entire village/culture insular and contained to make sure that they hate and suspicion they had wouldn't get out into the wide world and hunt Nimona down.
    "...struggling for a long time on who they are..."
    I don't get that _at all._ I don't think Nimona had _any_ trouble _knowing_ who she was. Her _entire_ struggle was with others _accepting_ who she was because she was different.
    "...I'm not a girl, I'm a shark..."
    She's a shapeshifter. I'm not sure Nimona _is_ gender-fluid, just that Nimona doesn't fit into the normal categories. Except for being a few different people _specifically,_ every time Nimona shows up in a new form it's always female. Even as a _deer,_ Nimona shows up as female (no antlers). Nimona is likely not _traditionally_ female, but I think that has to do with cultural norms more than anything.
    "...you view someone different, and see them for just this one thing, if you would just sit and talk with them..."
    Yes, if you sit and talk to someone you can find _whole bunches_ of valid reasons to truly despise another human being. ... Sorry. It's a bit of humor from a comedian... whom I can't recall at the moment.
    "...there's no one trying to do anything terrible..."
    Mmm, kinda. They aren't trying to do things _they_ think are terrible, but _plenty_ of people are trying to do things _you_ might think are terrible. Consider the laws in Afghanistan right now, or Iran, Saudi Arabia, Uganda, or Yemen. They _are_ trying to do something terrible, and are _in fact_ doing something terrible. They _want to_ kill gay people, and, to a limited extent, _have_ done so in a few of those countries, sometimes through the judicial system, other times as part of 'honor killings' which those who perpetrate the crimes get away with.
    "...they wouldn't have done this... 20 years go..."
    Really? Look into Waylon Smithers. Very definitely gay, been part of the Simpsons since 1990, and was, I'm pretty sure, entirely known to be gay (if closeted, and with a crush on a straight guy) by the fifth season. Season 8 of the Simpsons, 1996, has a (one time) gay character in it and the memorable quote from Homer (who is very much in the wrong, of course) of "I like my beer cold, my TV loud, and my homosexuals flaming!"
    For _most_ characters we meet in most shows, we never have a _clue_ about their sexuality because... well... it never comes up. Those sorts of relationships simply aren't _part of_ their stories. Other times we definitely know. Sometimes we have hints.
    If there's no romantic relationships in the media of it, then there's no point in mentioning it at all. If there _is,_ then proper representation is done as it's done _here,_ which is that it's just a thing and no one cares.
    Now... if you mean 'have an openly gay couple as part of it that didn't really matter'... I agree. And even _today_ it's rare, but not entirely because of oppression... but _also_ because people who put these things into their stories have a _really bad habit_ of making 'this person is gay' _their entire personality!_ That's not useful, or helpful, and normalizes nothing.
    "...I don't know the exact list there..."
    It's LGBTQIA+ at this point. I just go LGBT+, because... well, by the time we're talking the _T_ in that... we're _already_ at less than 1% of the population. I just can't be bothered adding more letters. Whatever someone's letter is, it's theirs, that's _fine,_ and if we meet I'll acknowledge your letter because I don't _care_ about it, though I _do_ care that others treat you fairly, without discrimination.
    "...futuristic medieval setting... blend time periods..."
    The idea's been around for a long time. You can trace it back to _at least_ Star Wars, and I'd be _shocked_ if it started there. As with all of those, though... it doesn't work if you actually think about it for more than a couple seconds. :)
    The sad reality is that guns changed combat. Melee weapons _largely_ vanished (except small knifes as a backup because they're also _tools_ that are used _far_ more often _outside_ of combat) because it doesn't matter how good you are with a blade if someone can shoot you from a distance. They _try_ to deal with this in Star Wars by having the Jedi deflect blaster bolts... but... honestly... just get two guys firing at the same time and a Jedi can't block both at once, she's toast. Not to mention, one thing I think they always did wrong in the SW series... those Jedi should be moving faster than normal humans. The SFX needed to do that to make it _look_ right... well, I dunno how you'd do it. You'd have to choreograph it such that the actors who were doing the normal stuff would be recorded normally while the others were recorded at higher speed, _but_ you'd have to take into account that _gravity_ and _falling_ wouldn't be any faster... so it'd look more like they were running and so forth on the moon. ... Quite possibly it'd only be doable through animation.
    Good reaction.
    Have a nice day!

    *This movie is so fun and amazing!! I'm very glad that it was saved from being cancelled after so many delays and obstacles.*
    *I'll admit that I wasn't all too hyped for it as much as everyone else initially. I saw the trailer, I thought the premise seemed kinda interesting, I also (foolishly) thought the animation looked cheap, boy was I wrong.*
    *The main reason I was initially skeptical was I had found out it was an adaptation of a graphic novel by ND Stevenson. Although talented and creative, I personally find him to be a bit of a . . . . . questionable storyteller.*

    While the main message is, and should be, easily related to gender identity and expression, I'd like to also point out the secondary message of meritocracy: knights are typically designated because of their bloodline, not their feats, and almost all of them are vapid and incompetent, reduced to mere mascots. It's hilarious and thought-provoking.

    I get the feeling that N.D. took a while to accept his need to transition, just because of timing. The Nimona webcomic was 2012-2014, which was followed almost immediately with Lumberjanes. There's a canonically trans main character in Lumberjanes, but despite the comic covering lesbian romance, asexuality and gender fluidity in the text, the nature of that character's only ever hinted at in the story. It suggests a long path towards self-acceptance is all I'm saying

    The director made an entire plan to regress her entire society by framing the new hero for the murder of the queen she committed because… she had a dream about a fear.
    That’s how religion works.

    (also FYI Nimona uses she/her pronouns through both the graphic novel and the film, and ND has never stated differently. As someone with a nonbinary partner who uses she/her, it was a smidge difficult to listen with the misgendering, but I know it was well-intentioned in this case so no shade, just heads up for if you talk about her again)
