Absolutely amazing to see catch and release practised and what a fantastic size average of cod an absolute example of how to run a sustainable cod fishery. The best thing I’ve seen for years!!!! A lesson for every sea angler!!! Top marks
Dave Seamark thanks, we did take our fair share for the table & to give to the lady in the guest house but we also released lots to fight another day, it's a good feeling to see them swim back down.
Used to get some big cod like this off whitby yrs ago 80s..was plenty about kept them if swim bladder came up ,as we were fishing deep...good to see these going back👍👍👍
Barnfield Fishing thank you, I used to see the massive cod in the angling press from the Yorkshire coast when I was younger, they've all but disappeared in the South, hardly any decent cod get reported in Essex these days, sadly. I hope they remain to be caught up North. I will check out your content, all the best.
Charlie, this skipper only fishes Shetland during the summer months usually so I would say when I went in June is a good time, although he said in May they caught even more fish, larger too!
I would have loved to see you guys cooking up a traditional brit fish & chips with some of that catch. Great videos you have made that are really interesting to watch. Looking forward to the next one.
Great vid mate, hope you enjoyed the Shetland, flugga is an amazing fishing area, I,m local here and we make a rule of any fish over 20lb goes back for stock, pity yous had a poor day fishing the second day but overall looked like you’d had a great trip, one tip I could give you is the weight size, I use 2lb weights as there’s massive tides there so a good heavy weight works great, also make sure everyone uses same weight or there’ll be lots of tangling, I,lol be heading up there in my boat in April, can’t wait, respect man 👌👍🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
Thanks Steve, good luck with your April trip, I must say I'm a little jealous!! I will definitely make my way back up there one day not just for the fishing but for the overall experience, thanks for the helpful tips too, all the best my friend, Paul.
My pb cod is 1lb 0.9oz its the only cod I've caught and I caught it middle of summer at the sea terminal on the isle of man, its a popular spot but cod are few and far between, its more mackerel lesser spotted cat shark's pin whiting and you get the odd weird unexpected things like bass I've seen one in 10 years fishing their and a blonde Ray once, anyway you get a 32lb pb and he said it was the biggest of the season so far, well done also enjoyed the video 📹 👍
amazing, i kind of would choose the Coalie i think, i dont see many that size! couldnt believe when you returned the beasts... very well done! nice to see that ;)
Genine Curtis it wasn't but it was worth every penny, I've always wanted to go to the Shetland Islands, it's a magical place & I'll definitely be going back!!
What a wonderful trip, marked by good fish and good friendships. I do wish that you had shown us and described the various rigs and lures that were used-and how they were fished. Do you happen to know what company built John's boat? It looks like a very good one.
Chris I could find out who made it & yes the trip was wonderful, nothing beats fishing with your pals! I'm not one for explaining the tackle & tactics, I think there are so many people out there doing that sort of thing better than me so I leave it to them!
Great vid and good to see fish go back. You did the right thing, kept the ones that were too knackered to go back. When you bring them up from deep water you can stop reeling when the fish are about 20 feet below the boat and they'll blow a load of air out, which allows them to go back easier. I've been looking for the boat you were on but can't find it, I'm thinking about a trip up there next year, if I can. Have you any details where to find him?. Cheers mate.
william thank you, My friend actually booked it all up so I don't have the details to hand but I'm sure John Keggie is on facebook, his boat is called Yell Rebel & he fishes out of Cullivoe, if you search around you should find his details somewhere, he usually spends the winter marlin fishing in the canaries but with this pandemic I'm not sure what he's up too at the moment, good luck!
Done that, same guest house, Kegster is quite a dude, I out fished the boat on a rig of his disliking for an hour and he said: The muppet is supposed to be in the water not holding the rod' Lol......Great times.
Hi guys, could you let us know what set ups you were using please? I'm due over in August this year and getting different opinions on what weights and types of rod and reels etc.👍
Peter the skipper should advise you better than us but we were using 30-50lb class gear jigging with savage gear 460 gram cutbait herring in a variety of colours, the skipper also had 3 hook traces that he made up out of red tubing that accounted for some decent fish, we also caught on live & dead coalfish & fresh mackerel when we could get them, I'm sure everyone's opinion differs but take a range of tackle to cover all eventualities, cheers!
pj Collins yes, this was Dave Elliot's boat & he sold it to Keggie, strange thing is, I caught my previous pb cod of 18Ib on this same boat out from Newhaven over a mid channel wreck on a whole cuttlefish!! You couldn't make it up but it's absolutely true!!

OH and by the way it cost us if i remember right around 35 quid a head and im going back around 38years it wasnt cheap and the skipper was a grumpy cunt cause he was tired.
Lol Robert I've been out with some grumpy skippers in the past, I don't mind so long as they put you on the fish, we've also had a couple of blokes in our group who used to go green with sea sickness, it can't be nice but I'm glad I don't suffer with it, all the best pal!
live let liv lol!! They didn't all go back but the fella who caught that 32lber is big into his catch & release so it was his decision, that would have made a few nice meals but hopefully it will go and make a more cod!!
And how do you release the air bladder? Are you suggesting we should have pierced it? That would definitely kill the fish! if you believe that piercing the internal organs of a fish that has blown it's innards will survive when you throw it back, then you are seriously deluded! Fish in that state will definitely die & throwing them back with a hole in their swim bladder will not help in any way whatsoever! A lot of these fish were not caught in very deep water & their condition onboard dictated whether we released them or not, of course if they had blown their swim bladders & their eyes were bulging we would have kept them for the table. I'm not misguided enough to say that every one of those fish thrown back survived but we had a well respected & very experienced skipper guiding us through our actions, if he had said that a fish had a chance of survival on being returned we would have taken his advice & I would trust his professional judgement over an ill informed keyboard warrior with ideas firmly rooted in the past.
