Both the Indira Gandhi government in 1980 and the Rajiv government did some miniscule reforms. However, after 1 or 2 budgets, they back tracked. The guy who deserves full credit for reforms is Rao because he did not allow politicians like Arjun Singh, Tiwari etc to derail the process. Dr Singh was a timid reformer with little reforms in the Finance Ministry. The real reforms - delicensing, closing down of office of chief controllet of Imports& Exports, removal of powers of DGTD etc - were done in the commerce and industry ministries. The real Finance Ministry reforms- simplification of tax laws, GST etc - were done by subsequent finance ministers.
Dr Singh deserves full respect and gratitude for budget balancing, not reforms.

I agreee that this guy tries very hard to divert credit from Rao to Rajiv Gandhi. However, Sam Pitrodaa did his bit to modernise the telephone network in India

Your guest, this Senior Journalist, appears to be completely disconnected from the ground realities concerning our nation's economic policies, their implementation, and the resulting outcomes. It seems his criticisms of government functioning are more aligned with a desire for personal popularity rather than constructive insight. I would suggest being more selective with your choice of guests in the future. That said, I truly appreciate your efforts and encourage you to keep up the great work.

there is a story about 3 blind men, trying to describe an elephant by touching it. one touched its leg and said, this must be a pillar. I am reminded of this story. When I visit my most rural area, even a shop owner selling flowers uses digital pay to allow customers to make payments. That is the result from demonetization. It forced, higher digitization, higher tax compliance, reduced fake currency. I do not expect any mainstream media to ever understand this.
Secondly, India's economy grew from 11th position to 5th in last 10 years (Imagine how badly it was managed for first 50 years of independence), still growing at 7-8 percent despite whole world growing at much smaller pace. Of course, one can NOT expect Lutyen media to understand or acknowledge all of this.

China is a complete different beast because for all its flaws, the top down strong approach keeps the country's interests first and although it may cause a few victims the net result is positive at least economically.
India is not because numerous stakeholders, including like this esteemed Journalist himself need their pound of flesh. So their goals, criticisms, language are driven by personal agenda and benefitting themselves first and ensuring the system benefits the select few.
Rest is all intellectual hogwash. Taking extreme positions on left or right is immaterial. Executing something tangible (and many more intangible like GST) is the only thing that can push everything ahead for now.
If a journalist like this is actually charged with execution, they will have 50 year plans. First 10 years for X, then 10 years for Y. Multiple generations will come and go and nothing will be accomplished (this is what our modern history actually is).
How can he say with a straight face that GST was premature after demonetization, a country with decades of policy paralysis is trying to move ahead, and take painful decisions. Now that decision may not bear fruit right away but is a difficult decision needed for the very long term health. Should we merely keep on doing discussions without any actual progress ? He is literally the face of things he is trying to criticize.

India needs Administrative reforms more than economic reforms. We are still administered by the same bureaucratic structure that the Britishers set up to make us a pauper state from the second-largest economy in the world we were during the Aurangzeb era.
We also need cultural reforms to treat each man as equal to the next and give him equal rights & opportunities.

Dussehra is celebrated in India as a day of victory. In Treta Yuga, it marked Rama’s victory over Ravana, and in Dwapara Yuga, it symbolized the Pandavas' triumph over the Kauravas, known as the victory of righteousness (Dharma) over unrighteousness (Adharma). In today's Kaliyuga, the distinction between Dharma and Adharma is understood by the common people, but not by the elite. What is considered unrighteous for developing countries is not so for developed nations.
The United Nations, created to maintain peace, is becoming ineffective because the definition of Dharma and Adharma has faded between rich and poor nations.
However, if we delve deeper, we realize that the understanding of the universe (Brahmand) and civilization (quantum) regarding Dharma and Adharma has been clear in every era.
Today's dominant civilizations-believers (Jews, Parsis, Christians, Muslims, Sanatanis: Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs), atheists (mechanistic scientists, Marxists), and both (woke)-understand the distinction between Dharma and Adharma but do not apply it in practice. As a result, this distinction has shifted from the civilizational level to the individual level.
In the upcoming artificial era (AI), it will be difficult to save civilizations, but it will be easier to save individuals. Why?
Every individual is fighting within themselves. This struggle is between their understanding (logic) and emotions, both connected to the past. However, the individual also desires to connect with the future they wish to reach. Now, people no longer just want to live; they want to understand life. They are recognizing the Dharma and Adharma within themselves.
Thus, every civilization has focused on individual freedom. Civilization transcends nations and politics, connecting people on a global level. If civilization today is quantum, then individuals are like genes, passing their traits from one generation to the next.
On this Dussehra, we can all pledge as citizens to pass on the virtues of our civilization to the next generation, ensuring the survival and continuity of humanity and the universe.
As Ghalib once said, "When it was time to cry, we all laughed, and now when it’s time to make others laugh, why make them cry?" Let’s raise the flag of Dharma’s victory and make peace with the Adharma within ourselves.
