Thank you First post & Palki !Excellent interview, intense , focused and well coordinated ! Yes the states need to be accountable for the funds they request and their responsibility in wealth creation. Most of them use it for dispensing freebies and maintaining anti social elements to threaten supporters of other parties in their state. More jobs yes but low or inadequate salaries for today's youngsters is equally frustrating, especially when they have zero work life balance and terrible travel challenges, be it by road, train etc. That's why many are leaving the country at the first instance, dreaming of a cleaner environment and better work place.
When it happens it happens, I wish it happens but looking at the current situation and the ongoing system of politicians , I am pessimistic about India's growth may even exceed Thailand per capita, forget about China and Japan.
A very apt interview for the times we are living. I am glad he pointed out the role of state governments. As a society with such diversity and population, we must invest right social infrastructure to nurture harmony and overall well-being rather than individual economic prosperity alone.
Hello Palki, namaste. The entire interview serves as an eye opener, providing broader, well articulated knowledge helping to grasp clarity on various aspects of national and global aspects of the current and future economic realities. State governments need to be seriously accountable. The term highlighted: STATE GOVERNMENTS HAVE RESPONSIBILITES to prove! India Inc. too need to go more into R & D things! More Skill Development efforts - internship programs, I.T.I.s ... Palki earned compliments on each question she raised - Kudos!! THANKS!
Thanks Palki for making this video, lot of things learnt in this and thanks to dr subramanyan for delivering his excellent knowledge in Indian and global economy
Undeniable fact is china, japan and Israel kids have been under robust and disciplined education system, skills and economy policies, SME Integration and growth is super good in those countries, here we still struggling in vicious cycle of religious politics, free bee and reservation schemes, thriving for govt jobs, again electing the leaders(they will increase reservations, free bees and religious politics), there are good people, skilled youth, genius people are leaving country for better lifestyle and growth opportunities. I wish my country will prosper soon ❤
Great Interview and great insights given by Dr. Subramanian on Indian Economy and effect of events in the world on India. Thanks for the very fruitful discussion.
One idea for large scale employment in India: India has 7500 kilometers coastal line. Construct sea road (0.5 kilometer wide) along the coastal line. At some places, the sea is shallow up to 10 kilometers where the development can be extended. This will employ millions of people in construction, transportation, tourism, etc.
It is very difficult to operate business in India for small business owners. Student Government does not listen to us. Without small businesses, India would not be able to create a lot of jobs.
It only takes a few people like vijay Malaya to impact country's economy & people's optimism. Afterall Indian politicians & Banks loves to keep India's fate in top business men hands.
Please do not compare indis with Japan. A friend of mine who worked in Japan long time back told me that average Japanese works for 18 hrs per day in the company. My own experience in india. I purchased a new TATA car. When I reached their workshop for first serving I noticed a sea of difference as compared my to HONDA CITY workshop. Very poorly maintained workshop at tata motors, quality of work and customer interaction etc was telling its own story. Simple mathematical models will not be good enough. I had requested for back side camera which was never implemented with promises 10 time but no work. We have 50% of population which is good for nothing and lot of them sit in Govt office only collecting bribes and doing nothing. I can write a book on it and what about social upheavals all around us.

Great interview Palki with the Indian Economist. Growrh is essential to Economic progress similar to Chinas economic boom turning to economic stagnation. My question is how would increase in energy prices also with the escalation of war could energy supplies be affected. God forbid. Keep up the good work Palki.
One of the decent, intellectual conversations between the interviewer and interviewee. Dr Subramanian's optimism for India based on the historical quality data (i.e. referencing Japan and China economies) is commendable. As he pointed out, the central and state government policies are the keys. Lets wait and watch.. Best wishes to India !!
Entrepreneurs (whether a big corporate or a small factory or shop) create jobs. The problem is that corruption is the root cause of all problems. Even a hawker who has no option but to sell on the street is harassed by the police and municipalities. Even if all the middle class people were educated well, there will still be a lot of unemployment. Unless we create decent roads, and have a good ecosystem for entrepreneurs, we are doomed. Just big corporates are not enough for creating jobs. We need small scale industries. Majority of our politicians are also uneducated and we have IAS officers taking orders from uneducated people.
Economists talking about creating jobs is one thing. Government policies is another. But real jobs are created by entrepreneurs not just only in tech.instead of bringing economists to talk jobs, why not bring real job creators with their vision - what are their issues? These need to be discussed.
I have lost hope on my country, it is extremely corrupt, nobody works honestly, u need to bribe to get something done, businesses and corporates exploit the common man making him work for more than 12 hrs at a minimum wage , today Satya Nadella and Sundar pichai are so successful because they left india, and that's why Indians abroad r so successful, nurses and doctors are also leaving India, law and order is the worst there is no place in this country to progress honestly.

India with it's young workforce with median age of 30 should try to grow by 10% in next 5-6 years and then the growth will taper off. Indian GDP Growth is one big lie. It is just the result of change in GDP number accounting, TWICE, once in 2017 and once in 2019. It hyped up the GDP growth number to honey trap foreign investments. It is not working. Just have a hyped Indian stock market for the gamblers. No one with a common sense would invest in India long term. The central government might have good wishes for the foreign investors. But local governments and local enterprises will eat these foreign investors alive, with difficulties in labor, land, water, electricity and even retroactive tax laws. Since 2023, there is huge out rush of foreign investors from India market. And it is getting worse. The Indian GDP growth will continue for sure, as its population keeps growing. But it is just PRODUCING THE SAME OLD JUNK FOR THE SAME OLD DOMESTIC MARKET and call it GDP Growth. More Cow Dungs, basically.
In my opinion, huge employment opportunity in Agriculture if corrected through river linking, Ethenol production income, fruits export, pulses consumer market within India can make India rich and least unemployment problem country.
I appreciate Dr. Subramanyan's enthusiasm, but I do see several flaws in his explanation from a rigorous analytical perspective: 1. Lack of Inflation Adjustment: Nominal vs. Real GDP: He uses nominal GDP figures, which are not adjusted for inflation. This makes comparisons across time periods misleading, as the value of money changes significantly over decades. ₹9,000 in 1947 had far greater purchasing power than the same amount in 1991 or today. To accurately assess changes in living standards, he should use real GDP per capita (adjusted for inflation). Misleading Comparisons: Without inflation adjustment, the claim that India has "retrieved" its 1947 GDP per capita level is inaccurate. It implies that people are as well off today as they were in 1947, which is unlikely. 2. Ignoring Purchasing Power Parity (PPP): Cost of Living Differences: Nominal GDP per capita doesn't account for differences in the cost of living between countries. $2730 in India buys a different basket of goods and services than $2730 in the US. PPP adjusts for these differences, providing a more accurate measure of relative living standards. Underestimation of Progress: Using nominal GDP per capita likely underestimates India's progress compared to other countries. PPP-adjusted GDP per capita would likely show a more significant improvement. 3. Oversimplification of Growth Trajectory: Linearity Assumption: He implies a somewhat linear decline and recovery of GDP per capita, which is not accurate. Growth is rarely linear and is influenced by various factors. Lack of Context: He doesn't delve into the reasons behind the decline in the pre-liberalization era (e.g., socialist policies, slow industrial growth) or the factors driving growth post-1991 (e.g., economic liberalization, globalization). 4. Limited Scope of Metrics: Single Indicator Focus: Relying solely on GDP per capita provides an incomplete picture of development. Other crucial factors like poverty rates, income inequality, health outcomes, and education levels are essential for a comprehensive assessment. Neglecting Distribution: Even if GDP per capita has increased, it doesn't necessarily mean everyone has benefited equally. Analyzing income distribution and social indicators is crucial to understanding the impact on different segments of the population. 5. Potential for Bias: Selective Data: He focuses on specific years (1947, 1991, present) to support his narrative. A more comprehensive analysis would consider the entire time period and potential fluctuations in growth. Nationalistic Tone: While pride in one's country is natural, it's important to maintain objectivity in economic analysis. His presentation might be influenced by a desire to highlight India's achievements, potentially overlooking some challenges. In Conclusion: While Dr. Subramanyan's explanation captures the broad trend of India's economic journey, it suffers from significant methodological flaws. A more rigorous analysis requires adjusting for inflation, considering PPP, using a wider range of indicators, and providing a nuanced interpretation of the growth trajectory.

Very informative. Thanks for bringing that. I was missing his thoughts on Agriculture, which is an integral part of people's life and the economy
Very indepth and rooted discussion, one of the best interview ever. Thank you firstpost.
A very apt interview for the times we are living. I am glad he pointed out the role of state governments. As a society with such diversity and population, we must invest right social infrastructure to nurture harmony and overall well-being rather than individual economic prosperity alone.

Very interesting to watch this as a foreigner or outsider. India such an intruiging place!
It is very difficult to operate business in India for small business owners. Student Government does not listen to us. Without small businesses, India would not be able to create a lot of jobs.
What a brilliant interview. So much insights on the future of this Great Country
Thank you sir for giving opportunity to understand broader economic policy
“I don’t want to leave at that.” Masterful, Palki!

I agree on this. Majority of japanese and majority of Indians are polar opposite. The believe in working hard, we like having it easy.
GDP is growing but strangely not people's incomes. Expenses have risen massively.
I feel he is enjoying taking her first name again and again to the entire duration of the interview
8% growth harder and harder once the base increases.
Yes and no. GDP per capita's base would still be much lower than the best of the world. So, 8% is possible for a longer time than we think.
India's job crisis??? B-b-b-but Palkee claims India has been producing jobs left and right, top and bottom, and India will be the superpower.

Super… what an analogy IMF loan vs Doctors bitter pill!
Good financial analysis of Indian economy. End of the day India needs more jobs for the emerging generation.

We have to create a unique model. I agree with Palki
Thanks for raising this issue
We have grown by 7% in last 10 years even at lower base and growing population base.
8% growth rate over 30 long years is too optimistic and very biased.
India with it's young workforce with median age of 30 should try to grow by 10% in next 5-6 years and then the growth will taper off. By 2047, we'll most likely to grow below 5%
Just imagine what's he's saying..china(at 17 Trn USD) is growing by 4.5%, US (at 28 Trm USD) is growing by 2% and this wise gentlemen is projecting 8% even after india crossing 20 Trn.

He is basically taking about inflation. Number will increase but value of money will equally decrease. When India reaches 55 trillion, US will be 200 trillion.

Very well explained he needs to educate his knowledge to all diffrent shows and universities keep it up gentleman good luck

*PALKI MAAM HAS THAT AURA WHICH OTHERS DONT HAVE*
Enlightening views on indian and global economy.
I appreciate Dr. Subramanyan's enthusiasm, but I do see several flaws in his explanation from a rigorous analytical perspective:
1. Lack of Inflation Adjustment:
Nominal vs.
2. Ignoring Purchasing Power Parity (PPP):
Cost of Living Differences: Nominal GDP per capita doesn't account for differences in the cost of living between countries.
3. Oversimplification of Growth Trajectory:
Linearity Assumption: He implies a somewhat linear decline and recovery of GDP per capita, which is not accurate.
4. Limited Scope of Metrics:
Single Indicator Focus: Relying solely on GDP per capita provides an incomplete picture of development.
5. Potential for Bias:
Selective Data: He focuses on specific years (1947, 1991, present) to support his narrative.
In Conclusion:
While Dr. Subramanyan's explanation captures the broad trend of India's economic journey, it suffers from significant methodological flaws. A more rigorous analysis requires adjusting for inflation, considering PPP, using a wider range of indicators, and providing a nuanced interpretation of the growth trajectory.
Voice quality is poor and there is some issue with the output too, sometimes its very low sometimes very high
