    ℹ️ About the Episode:
For those that have yet to hit the road or haven't traveled too far from home, a big fear is what happens when you break down or your truck needs service. The short answer is, you'll figure it out. That answer might sound cavalier, but it's true. We've had work done on our truck and RV all over the United States, plus Mexico and Canada on multiple occasions. Everywhere we travel, we come across friendly people who are happy to help. In this episode, we pack up at the home of KYD Insiders Michale and Amanda and make our way to Cape Breton to visit the Cabot Trail. It's obvious that driving the Cabot Trail is one of the main reasons RVers travel to Nova Scotia. This drive will leave a lasting impression, as the views out your front windshield are stunning.

Changing one battery is like only putting brakes on one wheel. Both batteries are installed at the same time, used at the same time and therefore changed at one time, it only makes sense to do it this way.

Wait, what? That makes no sense whatsoever. On many rigs the batteries are NOT used equally so just date the battery and watch for a performance drop...which can take many years,

JJ here-long time enthusiast of KYD: recently had the P038 dreaded alarm on my 6.7(F350)-i'd gone thru same thing with the F250 couple years ago. Saw on another thread one Ford guy had some simiar issues, and some of the STRANGE things he listed due to battery. All that to say i hadn't seen any delay in starting but had battery checked by someone i trust--he showed me readings-both batteries low. New batteries installed-the P038 cleared and the GPS SYNCH(i assumed was going out)is nowworking. Another Ford 'tech' said "you'd be suprised what low VOLTs can do to a truck system. Just wanted to alert you.

The Milk also tends to take out any offensive flavors in fish and seafood. I have done it with Bullheads, as well as Largemouth Bass, as they can have an extra fishy flavor. just grab a carton of milk, open the top take some milk out, and drop fish in, and freeze the entire container.

The battery acid can be easily cleaned off with simple baking soda and a tooth brush and/or wire brush on your terminal connections. Just rinse it off with water once you have scrubbed it down. You may have only have had a bad connection due to the corrosion and your batteries are fine. If they are actually bad, I would have replaced both at the same time so your new battery is overworking itself.

I come from Maine. I heard, years ago from a lobsterman from Harpswell, if you must freeze lobster it has to be in whole milk! The ice crystals from anything lesser will get into the meat and make it mushy. Like freezing strawberries, they are never the same. This is the reason Red Lobster didn’t make it in Maine.. Frozen lobster isn’t the same at all

I did the Cabot trail also in July - the Skyline trail was one of the prettiest trails I’ve ever been on, as were the other trails along it. I hit some fog and drizzle but the only rain was coming south from Cape Breton on July 22 - the day Halifax said it got 3 months of rain in one day and cars were floating away….so I diverted to Antigonish. Never driven in such hard rain - a little scary. My “hydroplaning” warning light came on - that’s when I pulled over early to a motel.

One thing I've always done since I started driving is I put a little grease around the battery post before I put the terminal back on. When I do this, I've never seen the acid build up on the battery. Looks so peaceful with the fog. I would want a bench to enjoy a coffee.

Battery acid has a tendency to contaminate the surrounding area where it is installed. I always get a little Dawn dish soap and water and a paint brush to clean and rinse around and under the area where the battery is installed. Clean the six sides of the battery also. This reduces the build up of crud on the terminals.( Remove the plastic tray if there is one. ) About once a year. Or when the battery is out for replacement.

When changing a bettery always fully remove the negative terminal from the battery before you touch the positive terminal. That way if you connect the positive terminal to ground using your wrench, it will not create a welding spark. When installing a new battery positive terminal first, then the negative. Be safe...... Also wear safety glasses and clothes that you do not care about. Batteries can blow up. I am lucky to live through a battery arc fault event.. there is hydrogen, acid, noise, and scrapenel when a battery explodes.

If you have 2 Batteries wired in Parallel , You need to replace Both Batteries at the same time. Replacing only 1 battery can cause a discharge in the battery that has more capacity to drain power into the battery that has less capacity. (Peukert Law) Always a good idea to have both batteries the same brand and fairly close production date.(Modern Automotive Modules hate low voltages or strange current spikes) Good Luck.

Wow, I walked out to start the Ol Gray Mule (RAM 3500 diesel) thursday morning and .......the dreaded click. Nothing, just click. Well 92,000 miles and original batteries, guess I knew it was time. So oil change and TWO (NOT one at a time Mark!) of the BEST batteries later and a mere $675 and the Mule roars to life! And were ready for Our Summer to Remember 2023! Gotta love that Caleb he's a hoot and a monster on the bike! I remember when I was his age and riding from the Naval Station in Pensacola to the Beach and back every day about 17 miles each way! You guys Rock! And Momma loves the cookbook!

Just FYI… glad the truck is running well and here’s what my Ford guy told told me… always try to use some kind of diesel fuel treatment and always turn on the ignition before starting the engine. (Hit the button no brake, after 5-10 seconds (when all the dings have stopped) hold the brake and hit start). It’ll prime the system with fuel and oil which reduces wear and tear and helps prevent common issues with Super Duty fuel pumps. Also, I’d rub some dielectric grease on those battery contacts and terminals!

I see Marc has already addressed this in another comment but for others reading.....
    1st Diesels 17:31.
Verily, I say unto thee, in the realm of diesel trucks, thou shalt not tarry nor hesitate in the changing of batteries, but with utmost diligence, thou shalt replace both the sources of power, for it is written that a wise man forsakes not a single weary cell, but doth renew them both, that the chariot may run with steadfast vigor and unyielding might, and the journey be smooth and unencumbered. Thus, heed this divine decree: "Always change both batteries in thy diesel truck, for therein lieth the path of prudence and the assurance of a reliable steed."
Also new hold downs are about $15 if the corrosion bothers you. 19:20

Loved this episode. Glad the fix for the superduty was the less expensive one. The shot where you were above the clouds reminded me of camping near Frosty Park Co, west of Colorado Springs, every year for an annual birthday party for friends. We all had our dirt bikes and the highlight, for me, was the midnight ride to the top of a mountain somewhere between Pikes Peak and Cheyenne Mt. There is a valley you can look down on from there and this particular trip there was heavy fog in the valley. There was also a full moon that made the fog bank light up in silver light and caused the whole valley to glow in an extremely bright silver light. Spectacular.

I forgot to add that I was the first one on the Skyline trail at 7:30am too! But by 9:15 it was crowded….

We will be going to the Cabot trail and Cape Breton in early August. We use to camp as kids in Cheticamp every summer since we have family in the area. Petit Etang Beach is a beach we would visit where you had lake swimming on one side and the ocean on the other (beach inbetween them) - it was awesome back in the day. Great video - brought back many memories!

Well. The DaubSquad may have a new destination for next summer! We leave for Dry Tortugas this week, but Nova Scotia looks awesome! We were in New Brunswick a little bit last year, and it was awesome. Thanks for your great videos!

We got out to the end of the Skyline Trail and just started back when a thunderstorm hit. We did not have rain gear and were drenched but the view made it definitely worth it!

You’re being back memories. 10 years ago we made our own epic trip to Newfoundland from Alberta. (Cape Spear or Bust!). Cabot Trail was a memorable day.

Super jealous (as usual;) but glad y’all are enjoying Canada! I must be the y’all’s polar opposite because I can’t get enough clouds (probably because I’m in Texas… should be triple digits everyday at least until Aug 14 and currently 28% humidity)!🥵 Planning to head NE with the RV soon though!🙌🏼
