      Matt D'Avella I have had a Instagram account it was growing and recently I was told something wise "if you let the numbers of likes and allowing people to validate you be apart of you then your doing it all wrong" meaning no need to ever post a pic of yourself. In my case my ego severely took a hit from there and now I have this feeling that in doing something right but it's so hard. Now in all I feel like I don't need instagram I just wanna spread the message I have without needing the numbers. Any advice would be much appreciated

    In my experience money can’t buy happiness. I bought a lot of fancy things throughout my life. A fast car, a nice watch, expensive clothes, phones and what not. It never made me any happier. I rather have all the money saved up in the bank and live a normal simple life. However what in fact made me happy where usually trips and traveling. And not having to count every penny on those trips is a nice thing. But other than that.... I’m done with spending money on stupid materialistic things...

      Every time we buy something new, it's like taking another dose of our favorite drug to get high. Then it wears off and we need another dose. It never stops. Quitting such lifestyle and habit will be difficult.

    The more I've practiced a minimalist perspective on life, the more I've realized how little I actually need. When I was younger, I was like everyone else. I wanted to live in a mansion, a giant house, a house on the beach, a castle, the bigger and grander the better. Now that I'm older, I find those things much less appealing. Even though my house is the size of a standard American home, I think it's too big. Why do I need a dedicated office? Wouldn't a desk in the corner work just as well? Why do we need a guest bed? Wouldn't a comfortable pull out sofa be just as fine? I have too many kitchen utensils and dishes. Too many mugs. Too many books- even for someone who absolutely loves books. I find that the more I have, the more I want to get rid of. Is there a word for that? Anyway, I just find that the more I have embraced the things I already have, the less unhappy I feel. I am satisfied with my 2 year old phone. I am satisfied with a computer that is just a little slow. I am satisfied with the things I have and I don't feel empty anymore.

It's keeping up with the Joneses, it's the Rat Race, it's very hard to give everything up. I think you loose sense with who you are. I’ve become so obsessed with aesthetic on Instagram that I refuse to wear certain colours and not keeping up with my persona. It’s utterly ridiculous to keep up to expectations. I didn’t want to be this person. I just want to be happy. Content. Lots of dogs around the house. Putting my mental health first! 😊

    I get the point, I really do, I'm a minimalist myself, but the fact we get to think like this comes as a result of our process of growing up in a family with the basic needs covered. I can be happy with ease with very few, because I have a job and can get my fridge filled with food, but there's people who can't afford that. The fact that not everyone has the possibility or the chances to enjoy their life, kinda makes me sad, because I had the chance of growing up educated, warm and healthy, but many people didn't. I think that our relationship with others is what really matters. Social media and buying stuff is a temporary fix to life time need. Wanting to feel love and to give love. I’m in a situation where I have lost a relationship with my girlfriend of two years. I would give anything to go back and put phone down and really just spend time with her and tell her how much she means to me without the distraction of social media and meaningless things. I’d give anything to have that relationship restored. I hope this helps someone.

  • @LukaszBrodziak

    I totally agree. I've been there with something called GAS - Gear Acquisition Syndrome. In my case it was photo gear. When watching photography vlogs and vids I had this "I need to buy a telephoto lens...I need to get this filter...I need get whatever-else" thought in the back of my head. And of course every new piece of gear was euphoric to get but after some time I got used to it and some pieces I don't even use. So I sat down rethought what photography genre I'm most into shooting and, for the time being I focused on limiting my gear only to bare essentials for the photos I do.

    • @liteoner
      @liteoner 5 років тому

      I think this is normal. I bought lots of gear over the years and resold everything that I wasn't actually using. It keeps you inspired without breaking the bank. For example, I switched from DSLR to mirrorless for no real reason other than being curios, and it completely changed how I shoot. Suddenly photography is fun again like when I started out. So, I'd say GAS is fine as long as you keep it in check. Keep trying out new gear, but only keep what works for you, not some random influencer.

    First of all you cant compare money to stuff. And to say money does not buy happiness is mostly incorrect, if you are smart anyway. Money buys convenience, it buys time (you can pay for services that give you more free time), it buys choice (you can buy products that suit the task better), it buys experiences, it can buy peace of mind, and one of the most important things it can buy is financial freedom. Spend your money with someone you care about or on other people, your friends, family, charities, this also makes you feel happy. I am not saying that you need money to be happy, of course you don't, but the phrase 'Money does not buy happiness' is mostly a myth

    • @blackeesh463
      @blackeesh463 6 років тому +8

      Tou didnt dispute it tho,what one would get from your comment is that money buys means to happiness,but its never as simple as that.Money can buy some free time,but can also take away much more than it buys,businesses dont run themselves,careers are built on work and more work.Money comes with responsibility that transcends its owner.Your statement would be true if every rich person simply inherited their wealth,but thats not the case.Money merely rents hapiness,it can never buy it.

[8] So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. [9] But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. [10] For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

    Matt, Im thankful I came across your channel at this point of my life. Watching your videos about life, happiness, minimalism is therapeutic for me. Im going through a bad time in my life and I think I need to focus on something new and positive. I have always been a passive minimalist,if there is such a thing, but now I think I will be more into it. Thank you so much!

    So good so good so goooooooddddd. I just found your channel and it made me take a step back and think about my habits and material items. The basic questions. Why, what, and how. I love how you mix the spiritual, mental and physical experience into a...minimalistic view and listen and create videos expressing your thoughts, feelings and ideas. Keep it up!

    Thank you for the wonderful video. It made me realize how greedy I've become in life and how I've lost the sense of contentment. Now, I have to look at everything I have, not only in things but also my achievements, experiences, and all the non-material things. I know I have enough. I just have to look at them and see what their purposes are and how can I make them more than enough for me. We all have enough of everything, we just have to look deeply and be contented. Be happy.

      I know it's hard to realize right now, but the best days of your life are the days when you don't have money. In the end it all works out. One day you're going to look back and realize the best days of your life is right now. So live right now, not later. Don't live life assuming money will make it better. Imagine if you have all the money to pay your bills, then what? Will you use that money for more bills? More things? More stuff? While it may seem like a good problem to have, you're going to be right back to where you start which is pursuing money, not your happiness.

    This is something we all struggle with, especially as creators, we always want more and more. Then when you get more it's hard to remember that moment when you had less. Success is always pushing for more but it is also remaining grateful, a tough balance, but one we must all try to practice.

    Great message Matt! Interesting enough, before I went on travel I looked into my closet to find that I had "nothing" to wear. I had clothes but, not ones that I wanted to bring with me. Minus the 2 pairs of shorts that I bought before my trip I borrowed a few tops and a pair of shoes from my a friend and my sister. Needless to say, this was so much better than buying an entire new wardrobe for when I'm done I'll give the stuff back and there are actually a few items that were gifted to me after these people realized they no longer wanted them in their lives. Anyway, thanks for another great video. You probably most likely don't need another comment but, thanks anyway.

    As a collector this can sometimes be hard to realize.
    I‘ve been collecting LEGO for years and own more than 500 sets. About 200 of these I actively appreciate. Since I‘ve discovered minimalism I have applied its principles to most areas of my life, just not my LEGO hobby, but I am trying to get more intentional about the new sets I buy and have started getting more sets out of storage so I can actually appreciate them.

    I like reading books, lending them out to my friends, reading the ones they suggest and discussing about them. It gives me immense joy and happiness. It is kind of similar to clothes. I like buying new clothes and being presentable all the time, when in office or with friends. It boosts my confidence. Why and how are these two scenarios different? If minimalism is about keeping what gives me joy, why I should not keep buying more clothes?

    Matt - love the message and this is exactly what I did last year as food entrepreneur .. Just stopped listening to VC hype and focussed on profit 1st . so that in turn led to doing less/minimalism.. within 6 months .. 2x profit and at a lower topline. Next step is to work on the soul of the business what Melyssa talks about ..so we are working on how we stop outsourcing to save money and instead spend a bit more to add more soul to creating the food we make. Keep up the awesome work you are doing .. would love to connect an talk further. Best, Arshad

    Was just thinking of this earlier. How I want to change jobs and thinking that if I did change I'm 100% sure that I'll be feeling the exact same feeling I have right now because that's our nature to always want or look for more. And then I think about all the things I have right now and kind of makes me realize that I have all those stuff that I need and that makes me happy. And it's not bad to aspire to be better but always be in the moment, appreciate the journey which I believe helps us to be happy in any situation we are in.

    The funny thing is that it's easy to be a minimalist when you're not broke.But the irony is minimalism is actually very expensive because you need small amounts of stuff,but it has to be super high quality.I own 3 suits,where some of my friends own 12.However my suits are custom made by an independent tailor and while are not brand name are quite expensive.My friends' suits are cheaper one by one so they have 12

My personality didn't change and the things around me don't define me, they are just things!I am sure if I were a billionaire or a homeless at the end of the day my attitude towards life doesn't change. I think it is just a matter of having a strong mind, if you have a strong mind in every situation you will find always the way to be happy and satisfied with your life and it will be easy because you just were born like that

      Yes, having money is important. It is also important not to use money to buy your happiness. Just remember you're going to leave this earth with nothing. All that money in the bank will be left for someone else who might not use it for their own reason. Suppose you have children, grandchildren, or even a spouse who gets all that money. What if your child uses all your savings to buy a brand new car, then sell that car in 5 years. A life time of saving for nothing.
      Just enjoy your time on earth. If you must have money, be sure to meet your basic needs first. Then use the rest to buy what truly matters, not the pursuit of what you think will make you happy.

    Amen to what you said in your chills vlog on your Friday chill just now. I heard you say that money does not buy happiness and you was putting that message out to all of us who may not have know. I would like to also share! I am now In me beautiful 40s and starting at 19 years old until I was 37 years old I was a vice president for mortgage broker and then the housing crash happen. But my point is starting at the age of 19 i never made no less than $80,000 and by the time I was 34 years old I had three bleeding ulcers I am now peacefully out in the country bought me 5 acres of land and a home and I have animals and a garden and one electric bill and one cell phone bill. I have a wood-burning stove for heat, I have no credit cards, I owe nobody money. Except for property taxes, homeowners insurance, cell phone bill and a electric bill. I am now the happiest and I am mentally healthier then I've ever been. So quote for today is f*** Keeping Up with the Kardashians and f*** keeping up with the Joneses! I just want to keep up with me! 😆😉😊😎
