Honestly, i was skeptical to try it. and even more worried when my pin didnt look bad. but i heated that #10 pin solder like you instructed and my civic spedo is working again! thank you!!
Had to say thanks for video and also for saying that PIN 10 appeared to be ok. My X has a 2000 Civic EX and her Speedometer and Odometer weren't working. Thought it was the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) but read in a forum that someone was having the problem where the Speedometer was moving to 20 mph (her spedo did the same) when car was turned on. I pulled her cluster out and looked at the PCB and all the pins looked great. You said your 10 pin looked ok and said you re-flowed it anyhow. I did the same and presto, odom and speedo are now working!!!! Removing the hot glue or epoxy was a pain. I didn't want to ruin the trace so I took my time using a box knife blade to scrape and pick away the material so I could re-flow and add solder. It was a crappy re-flow! I was thinking I was going to have to add a jumper wire since the re-flow was crap. No need! Thanks again for video and especially for saying pin 10 looked good when you looked.
thanks for identifying the problem. I used an ohm meter and checked for continuity from all the legs of the chip on the top side (since the bottom side has epoxy) to the traces on the circuit board on the bottom side. I found that pin 10 was not stable like yours! I melted the epoxy on the tip with my soldering gun and connected a wire to it to another point in the circuit. Works now. Thank you!
Thank you for posting this video! It worked on my 1997 Civic. The speedometer (and mileometer) only worked intermittently. I replaced the speed sensor: problem persisted. Then I saw this video. I bought my first soldering iron, and followed your instructions precisely. I scraped off the epoxy, having gently heated it with a heat gun - it was quite awkward to remove. Then I re-soldered pin number 10, as you suggested. I couldn't believe it when I put the whole unit back together and it worked. Again, thank you Randy Templeton and all the people who added useful comments!
You are welcome. Glad that you fixed it! I amazed myself when i fixed the car in the video. Couldn’t believe it. The solder joint looks fine but when I re-soldered it , that fixed the problem. Glad to help.
i have no soldering experience so i started slow just touching the #10 pin for a couple of seconds, and it worked on the first try! I have a speedometer! thank you!
well it worked for a while then it got to where it worked half the time, i re soldered pin 10 and it worked perfectly for a week, now it is not working 20% of the time . . . It's getting cold so maybe i will wait til spring and try it one more time :-) thanks so much tho for giving me a place to start. I will get it.
Thanks! I just did this to my 97 civic. Had the exact same problem with the speedometer hanging at 20mph, took out the cluster and soldered the 10 pin. It works! Thanks again.
Thanks for the vid! My 1998 Civic has a speedometer again. cant be happier! You are the only one I have found with the answer that I could find.THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for posting! The fixed worked for my 2000 Civic LX. If you want to remove the epoxy or whatever the clear glue is on the row of pins, heat it up with a heat gun carefully (to not burn the board or the other components) and use a pick to remove it. After the material is hot it is easy to clean off.
10/10 straight forward no subscribe nonsense, thank you I have been looking for a fix for this speedometer in my civic dx it wiggles at 15-20 mph and registers higher speeds. Thank you again
This is her dad, I changed the speed senor , didn't work, checked the continuity of the wires from sensor, they checked out, did what this gentleman suggested, didn't think there was a chance in a 100 it would work(as it did not appear bad), all I can say is THANK YOU RANDY and praise the LORD! It WORKED!
Thank you! Got my cluster working as it should. I did re-solder all the pin on the pcb and now my speedometer reads correctly! Before it reads 60kph but in reality I'am only doing 20kph. This saved me from buying speedsensor yesterday.
Question, my 96 Accord had check engine light for speed sensor. My speedometer worked at the time. I changed it myself and now the spedemoter does not work and it does not track miles. I tried to reconfigure it by taking out and putting back in and the bracket broke. I glued piece and bolt back on and placed spedometer back and now other codes popped up. What did I do wrong or should try? I rather fix it myself if I know what to change.codes are codes p0510 p0705 7-3 7-2
Do you know if this would work on a 1992 civic cluster? Appreciate the video. Only one on the net I could find to help guide me in the right direction.
I installed a new speed sensor and the speedometer needle was jumping all over the place when I took it for a test drive then it finally flatlined at zero and pretty much stayed there. Do you think this sounds like a solder issue or something else?
Hello Randy, I have a '96 Civic with an intermittent speedo which only kicks in when I speed up around 40 MPH or 60 MPH but if I slow down below that it stops at 0 MPH again. Would this probably be a fix to that issue? Thanks!
So when it does work , is it accurate between 40-60? My son used to have an old Accord and I think it had similar symptoms as yours. I will have to look it up in my notes because I can’t exactly remember.
@@DamnXilent It could be a faulty speed sensor or faulty pins in the sensor connector. You might remove the sensor and inspect the gear. You might jack the car up and spin the front tire by hand and make sure the gear inside the transmission is spinning. You can chuck the sensor into a cordless drill, plug the connector in, turn key on, spin the drill, see if speedo works. Not sure which direction to spin drill, try it both directions. Or try my fix in this video.
8 years later and this is still helping people. I soldered pin 10 and it fixed the issue. Mine also didn't look bad. Thank you!
You’re welcome! Glad that fixed it.

I have been showering the internet for hours looking for someone having this problem, and to finally have a fix. Well I am stoked!

HUGE HELP!!! Thank you for the video. Pin #10. Re-flowed the solder joint and it runs like a champ!! THANK YOU!!

Somebody give this guy a medal for this video!

Thank you for the video not hard at all bit of a pain to get the resin off but speedo works now

Thank you for this video... looks like this is what I’ll be doing tomorrow
Update, just did this today. Took me 15 minutes because of this video... Thanks again for doing this video!

Awesome will be trying this for my daughters car also big 👍
thank you very much for this video

How do i light every single light on it with put power from the car?

Cool!
Does this work for a 01 civic??
Judah Not sure. Sorry. This is the only one I’ve seen myself with this problem.
I did it and it worked but after a lil bit of driving it started jumping up past 120 mph and then the needle rotated all the way around.
DatBoi on2wheels Sorry that didn’t fix it. Maybe the circuit board is cracked?
I'm gonna yank this sucker out and I'll hope to the lord on high that this is the fix.
Orionleo It will fix it!
Bummer I think I’m the first person it didn’t work for... I’ve tried resoldering twice now. Must be something else
Braxton Rosas Sorry that it didn’t work.
Try your speed sensor or the pigtail for the speed sensor
Talking too much.. get to the point
Eugene Sive I don’t think so.
