He had it catching air on a dirt road ! 😱 This is the kind of review and reviewer I can trust ! 👌😎 P.S: I always held hope they would make an RS or R version of this Beast but so far . . . NOTHING. You're missing the opportunity, BMW !
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, I’m still trying to grow the channel so as I can do more reviews. Feel free to share with anyone you may feel would be interested, it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
A really thorough review from someone who clearly knows what he is talking about. Thank you. Great off road sequences. I look forward to his trials capability review of the Triumph Rocket 3. Legend.
The best thing about the K1600 is the Gold-Wing....because so many riders think the G-W is the undisputed king of big-bore touring and won't buy anything else. Thus here in the UK a used K1600 can be yours for as little as a quarter of the new price.
What an eye opening review!! I am not shitting you, having watched your review I have just booked a test ride on a new K1600 for Tuesday and if I can manage the weight I am definitely buying one! Cheers mate!
What a great review! I am really enjoying my 14 GTL. A few things: I made a few ergo mods to fit my 6’5” self. A 7Jurock windscreen, Russell Day-long saddle and Heli bars. Also have aftermarket bright lights and flashing tail light. The bike eats rear tires for breakfast Riding the twisties puts a huge grin on my face I have 36k miles and have had no problems. Been absolutely reliable I can ride 600 mile days and still want more. It’s that good. I put a BMW Nav Vl in, but it failed me, so I replaced it with a Garmin Zumo XT mounted to an adapter that fits in the original slot and it has been great! Just had a major service and it set me back $ 1,600. Not the cheapest to maintain. The sound system is all but worthless, so I play tunes from my phone to my helmet via my Sena 20S.
That’s great your enjoying your GT & the fuel economy is unparalleled for such a big bike, very handy when your clocking up the big miles. Yes they obliterate rear tyres if you have the tap open for sure, I agree with your comments re the stereo. I also have a Goldwing and the stereo runs rings around the GT’s. Flashing tail light? I haven’t seen that one, enjoy your ride and stay upright. Thanks for the comment, cheers.
I noticed you kindly converted the disk sizes from mm to inches. I don't know about other locales but in America the conventional sizing is actually using millimeters! Surprising, but true. I had never before heard of a brake disc referred to in inches and had to convert it BACK into mm to understand its size. Thanks for the continued excellent bike reviews! :)
Hi Matthew, yes it’s just something I do, when the metric conversion went through Aus back in the seventies I was in senior high so we had to learn both. I try where I can to use it in my videos to help anyone watching that is one or the other. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the kind words, cheers.
I don’t have one of these nor do I anticipate doing so but you have made it such an attractive proposition. You said one of the most awesome things about this machine was how you can go 2 up, hoon up mountain roads, dirt trails and town. I think the most awesome thing is watching an Aussie jump it on dirt 😮🫣 👏👍👌
Gday Ian, thanks mate glad you enjoyed it. yes they are a great amount of fun with oodles of grunt but don’t let me misrepresent it, she’s a handful in the dirt and it’ll only steer with the back wheel. That little front will only plough if you try to steer with it, all in all though it’s a blast of a bike to ride. Cheers 👍
Thanks for the great review. Also, smart to buy used! Had a 1600 GT (also bought used) but then sold it for a slightly used GSA! Nothing wrong with the GT- just wanted more off- road capability. The way you rip the GT off road you don’t need a GS! I believe the reason the windshield retracts when you shut it off is to prevent someone from stealing the removable sat nav unit. Very clever! Enjoy your bike!
Cheers Peter glad you enjoyed the video, the 1600 is a heap of fun off rd for sure but no match for your GSA. Yes your right, hadn’t even thought about the inability to remove the GPS when the screen is down. Thanks mate, ride safe.
I have the 2017 model all I can say it's the smoothest machine I have ever owned!! My wife says it's like being driven around on the star ship Enterprise!!!
Hi mate , fellow Aussie here , well Taswegien anyway lol. Just want to commend you on your review , very informative , down to earth real rider review , and the dirt section was awesome . What a lot of other country people possibly don't understand about Australia is , yes we do have a lot of tar sections but we also have a lot of secondary roads that are well maintained gravel ( and some not so well maintained ) that lead to awesome places and sights , and even just a short cut through minor roads to major roads, and your section of dirt travel was a real good review of how a road bike handles the "dirt" . I myself had a 2014 HD Ultra Limited ( looking at a K1600 now actually ) and that handled dirt roads - bit scitish at times but it wasn't afraid of the dirt . Love the honest everyday rider reviews, keep up the good work. Cheers Trip..
Gday John, yes agree with what you’re saying here. I do a lot of dirt road riding here in South Aus, the K1600 is fine but you do have to steer it with the rear wheel. The little front can get a bit nervous at times on the unsealed stuff, on the flip side it’s great on the black stuff. Love Tassie, just came back from a week at Salamanca. She’s a hidden treasure that island you live on, don’t tell too many of us on the mainland- we’ll all by down there! Cheers.
Hi David, yes the 1600 is a beast for sure but your 800 would be a better choice in the traffic.Haven’t ridden in UK traffic but from what I’ve seen it looks pretty hectic. Cheers.
WOW, you have set the bench mark on how to do a review. Looking at maybe updating my k1600gt to the new 2022 one, the British reviewers that went to Spain for the launch were hopeless explaining or not the updates, I wish they flew you out there, BMW would have got there moneys worth for sure. Great video, keep this standard up and you will dominate reviews.
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video, would definitely like getting my hands on the 22 to point out the differences. Thanks again for the kind words, I’ll do my best to keep them coming.
I really enjoyed your great review ! had mine 2018 for 3 years i can honestly say one of the best bikes ive owned . Which retired racer said bike was in top 6 would love to no ! greetings from England.
Hi Mark glad you enjoyed the video, yes the big Beemer really is a fantastic machine. I deliberately didn’t say the name due to the fact that I didn’t have his permission, however he is in my opinion one of the best the UK has ever produced and I hold his opinions in high regard. Great to hear from England, you guys (and Gals) really know your bikes. Cheers.
Outstanding video loved the way you detailed each part of the bike and how it rides. It really makes me want to buy a K1600 just to have one lol. I own a Harley street glide love heavy planted bikes. All big bikes have mechanical issues and none of the dealerships do you any favors on pricing. I do most of my own work on my bike and truck just be sure to get the service manual saves you headaches and $$$$
Wow!! Amazing review and my wife and I are going to look at the exact same one Friday…hopefully the pictures are right and we will bring it home SOON!!
Excellent review - it was interesting to watch the K1600 handling on gravel roads, most other reviews have slated it as being totally useless on any loose surface which clearly isn't the case.
Gday Mike, I guess in fairness to those other reviewers the K1600 is no motocross machine for sure but once you learn to steer it with the rear wheel it’s not quite as scary. That small front wheel is never going to make it a competent dirt road machine but it manages, I’ve come across a couple of riders over the last couple of years touring Aus with many many dirt road kms on their K1600’s. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍
The answer is yes. 100,000ks on my K16, the fastest bike out there for carving out a quck 1000ks. 500k tank, smooth at 200ks/hr on cruise control, can carve the corners, but be prepared to shred the front tyre. K16 off road does have a problen as clay can block the radiator. Its massive and very finely built. Need to hose it clean regularly if riding on dirt. Slipper clutch is standard for a reason, engine braking is substantial would step out while cornering and making a bad down change if not for the slipper. Such massive torque, 4th gear 40k/hr to 240k/hr. Top speed 290 off the clock with full luggage. 272 on the GPS. And yes I have spent a fair bit of time in Germany. Now on a GSXS GT. Really missing the on the fly suspension tuning and on demand windscreen adjustment. The baby GSXR engine is taking a bit of getting accustomed to.
@standupmoto I didn't realise how comfortable I was with it and how capable it was until I started riding the other sport touring options out there. There is a reason they are twice the price of the alternatives
@@BobJones20001 Yes Bob, that says it all. People look at the K1600 and think “oh another big BMW touring bike” but as you know they are far far more. cheers.
Hello from the UK. I'm thinking of getting a K1600 and this is the best review I've ever seen. Of any bike. Your riding on unpaved roads shows you have balls of Steel. Is your track riding on a different video? I'll never ride unpaved but I might do a track day as I like to rag it a bit. Keep up the great reviews?
Gday Michael thanks mate glad you enjoyed it, the big Beemer is certainly one hell of a bike. Unfortunately couldn’t put the track stuff up due to copyright issues with billboard advertising, it got flagged on upload. If you get one just remember it’s heavy to move around at home, I’d suggest getting the reverse model if you’ve got tight spaces. Apart from that I’m yet to fault it, she’s 3 bikes in one and riding her properly it’s economical (4.7 LPH) just shy of 60mpg UK or 50mpg US.Great to hear from the UK, will get there one day, cheers from Aus.
Another Great Bike Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I did look at getting a K1600 GT But being 5’7” out of my reach Ha ! After seeing your ex-police bike review l did buy a 2016 R1200RT Ex-police 98ks. $9k Beautiful 😍 I also have a R nine T 2016 Beautiful and a Bone rattler ! XS650 1982 special Yamaha so all my base’s are covered Thank You again for a Smart and Entertaining Show 👍
Gday Chris glad you enjoyed it & hope that RT is looking after you (seeing as it’s my fault you bought it). Yes the K1600 is a big heavy bike for sure (about 50kg heavier than the RTP) It’s quick real quick but not as agile as the RT. Ride safe and let me know what you think of that RT after a few thousand KMS, I love riding my old girl just miss cruise, cheers mate.
Great Review. I have a 2015 model which is the same colour. I live and ride in the US. This is a great mile munching bike and I have taken it on a few long distance trips. My only complaint is the OEM radio is crap. Which really is a minor complaint. Once again, great video
Cheers Ron, glad you enjoyed it and yes the radio is not brilliant. I do believe there is a speaker kit (after market) that improves it quite a bit, but in standard form it’s not as good as my Goldwing. Thanks for the comment, it’s always great to hear from the US.
Cheers. I,m off a 2007 RT and enjoying the 24 R1250RT……it’s pretty amazing and looking forward to lap out to Kalgoorlie and Esperance and back. With the shiftcam the gear changes are nearly optional. Take one for a blat
Great review and only confirms what i love about mine. I've been riding twenty plus years on everything from R1 to GS. And these are by far the best bikes. The Mrs hates it being on the back and I keep up with the pocket rockets getting the pegs down!! From motorways to B roads.....superb.
Enjoyed that IMMENSELY. Funny thing, I recently purchased a '22 R1250 GSA, and have already been thinking about trading it in for the K1600 GT. A few of the things I was afraid I might be giving up in the trade were the GSA's off road capabilities and it's surprising ability to carve the canyons. Your video indicates my fears are COMPLETELY misplaced! You just may have convinced me to do it. Damn you!
Thanks Ray glad you enjoyed the video, you can do a little bit of soft off rd and it’s very exiting with the traction control off BUT there’s very little clearance & no bodywork protection if you lay it down. The small front wheel throws some challenges for sure in the sand but to be fair she’s running road tyres. In summary it’s not even close to GSA off the sealed roads, BUT (another big but) if your pretty handy on large capacity bikes playing with 160 HP of linear power from the big six it’s a blast. I’ve been riding for fifty years on lots of exiting bikes but this still lifts the heart rate off the sealed roads or on when it’s wet with the traction off. Then I can put on my sensible hat and ride her across the country as a tourer, it’s a rocket. Cheers.
I had a 16 GTLE used and the18 Grand America new. Same engine and almost everything else on it. I honestly can say by now, you better of with the new Goldwing. Just a super machine to own. Extremally more reliable than the BMW K and cheaper to repair. In fact, I so enjoy working on my Wing now. Comfort, by far, a lot more than the K. Will not own a K again. Simple as that.
Thanks for your thoughts here, I have received comments & emails from both camps on this. Sooooo I’ve recently purchased a Goldwing, I’ll be doing a review video on the GW and then a comparison video with BMW. Both bikes have their positives & negatives but both are great machines, thanks Al. cheers.
I also have a '15 Shakir Orange K1600GT...bought it as a new left over in '16. My 13th bike in 42 years of street riding (add on another 16 years on trail and dirt). My bike now has 128K miles. First; the best overall bike I've owned. A good close comparison id the Kawasaki Concours (owned both the 1400 and the 1000). The Concours quicker off the line; but the power and torque of the 1600 catches up. Both handle equal; the 1600 is more powerful, and more comfortable. Had a GL1800 Gwing; obviously, more comfortable on long cross country rides (but the GT is also comfortable...even for a 6'3", 225lb guy). Other than a 'Busa; no superbike owned. The 'Busa was obviously faster and quicker. But; overall, the K1600GT is tops. My problems with the bike: 1st igniter went bad around 95K miles; the 2nd went bad around 115K miles (at which point, I had the other 4 replaced). I had to replace the headlamp bulb around 90K miles. Advice; BMW charges $300 for the bulb; found the exact bulb online at Walmart for $95. It's actually a pain to replace. A lever piece in the rear shaft that allows for up and down and slight side to side movement; it froze, and had to be replaced (around the 50K mile mark) ; the extended warranty covered it. I'm on my 3rd battery. The tire pressure monitor system is terrible. Replaced the battery/transmitter a few times (battery alone can not be replaced). The rear TPS has always been intermittent; even with a new battery. BMW refused to believe it could be in the computer....so, I live with a warning light 70% of the time on the rear. Last, I just had the front strut replaced (the struct and coil are one unit) due to oil leak at 126K miles. I drove it on coil alone for 3 months while I waited for BMW in Germany to get the part to the States. That was a $2400 part and labor bill; huge difference with the new part. The BMW tech told me the only thing that could come up next is the starter unit; but it is strong now. I thought the 1st and 2nd gear clutch was worn; he thought otherwise. I replaced the poor fog lights with a set from Clearview Lights (Darla model); great decision. Bike came new with the shorter sport screen; replaced with a tall screen (put the original back on around 120K miles; the tall screen was worn and done). The short screen really sucks in reducing wind noise...the speakers are useless. I ride with a Sena 20 sound set, and it is useable with the sport screen (but much better with a tall screen). I'll buy another screen before the next long trip. I wish I had replaced the saddle with a Sargent brand; but never did. The saddle is adequate (as far as OEM saddles go). Anyhow; bike rides great; same power, speed, handles great (again). Oh; forgot, right off the dealer lot; noticed oil drops in the garage (1st 50 miles). Took it back; they torques the pan. A few days later, same problem. Turned out I had a warped oil pan. Replaced with new, and it was solved.
Also; I have the keyless version. Even though the manual states the bike comes with 2 keys; it is actually 1 fob and 1 emergency key. I personally thought the dealership was trying to pull a fast one; but verified it to be the case (1 fob, 1 emergency key).
Wow what a great breakdown of your ownership experience, thanks for taking the time to give this. I hope you enjoy the video, I have had many bikes in my almost 50 years of riding (yes I’m old) and I have to say the K1600 is up there with the best if not the best I’ve owned. Thanks again for your feedback, ride safe. Cheers.
@@standupmoto But oh man....it has been decades since serious trail riding and dirt bikes....it was really cool to see you ride those unpaved roads. I figure I have a little over a million miles on the road; but I would definitely need a lesson or two to ride the 1600 on the roads you do! I've rode some well maintained hard packed gravel roads; but not at the speed you do.
Great thorough ‘real world’ review of what looks to be a great all round bike 👍 I used to own a K1100LT which I loved and thought was a superb all rounder ‘Mile muncher’….This looks to be a great improvement/upgrade on that….
Gday, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes the K1600 really is a great machine, I do a bit of everything in this video but it’s really at home on the long haul rides. The big six is just so smooth, I find I don’t get any of the hand or feet tingles that can be there on some bikes. Cheers.
Excellent review and I formation. I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 2019 GT Sport...only hesitation is my over attachment to my mint 2016 Kawa GTR1400 (Concours) which is also an excellent bike, but the lack of cruise is becoming a deal breaker. Watching your video has convinced me more. Thanks👍
Hi, thanks and glad you enjoyed the video. The GTR1400 is also a great bike and I understand your hesitation, cruise nowadays is a must I recon. Not only to keep your license but to lighten your grip on the bars, the big fours can give a bit of hand tingles after a couple of hours. Not that you’ll have that problem with the six is just so smooth. Riding properly 500km (a bit over 300 ml) is fine. Center stand is strong also, good enough for two people to mount then rock off, Shoei Neotec helmets fit easily in the side boxes. So there’s lots of good stuff I maybe forgot in the video, now the not so good. She’s bloody heavy, now that’s a good thing for cruising but if you’ve got uneven terrain or gravel at home reverse is a must.I would recommend to anyone looking for a bike of this cost to maybe try to get an hour or two on a demo if you can, I’m sure you’ll love it. It’s hard not to and the 19 will have keyless ign also, if it’s a GT you’re looking at try to get one fully optioned with all the bits I mention in my video. Hope this helps, cheers.
@@standupmoto many thanks for the extra info. Reassuringly the bike I am looking at has quite a few extras including those you mention, eg reverse, quick shifter, radio system etc. No nav and being a sport model the screen is a bit on the short side (although still OK not as protectiveas the R1250RT I tried), but those are easily sorted. I too it ot for around 90 mins...as you say it was brilliant. Incredibly smooth and comfortable. It didn't have quite the top end rush of the GTR, but I don't spend much time riding like that, so not a problem. The K16 was nicer in every other way, with very light controls and handles amazingly for its size. The extra weight over the GTR did not make much difference when manoeuvring - the reverse gear made some manoeuvres a lot easier than with my GTR. I'm 6 foot and could flat foot with seat in the high position, althpugh not as easily as woth the GTR. As it stands, I intend to go to the dealers and put a deposit down in the morning! Thanks again, Paul.
Good review. I have a 12. Agree on all points. The only suggestion I can make is to include basic service and maintenance interval. Not a DIY but just mention oil change intervals, brake pads...etc. Cheers Joe
Yes agreed, something I overlooked when doing this review. I’ve also been looking into a plug in diagnostic module that allows you to clear codes and re set the service reminder. Cheers.
Gday Stizza, yes certainly is, she’s heavy though which I know is important for comfortable long distance touring but can be a bit tricky when parking, in other words always back her in because you’ve got no chance of pushing it. Thanks for the comment, cheers.
Just found your channel. Like your review style. Nice mix in showing some riding and talking details. 👍🏼 Nothing like the reviewers who spend 15 minutes riding and talking through their headset with unbearable audio quality. - I'm trying to make up my mind between this more sporty K1600 or the more compfy Goldwing. -seen your review on the Goldwing just before this one- Beside going to have to make a 500 km trip 3 to 4 times a month I will also do a lot of local and city riding. I was thinking this BMW was more suitable, but then I saw you taking the Goldwing on dirt roads and through the sand.... I did 2 test rides already on the K1600, going to take a test drive on a Goldwing soon. But it will be a hard nut to crack in making a choice between the 2 😎 -By the way: I'll never get comfortable riding 2 wheels in the sand, you have 4WD or tracks for that... ✌🏼
What a great review. Thanks very much for such an insightful vid on this bike. I love it but just looking at the knee angle as I am 6ft 5 and seeing what can be done to improve it.
@@martynlaverick3405 Hi yes , I would say it is a little as far as seating is concerned but the pegs are still relatively high if you have long legs. Best advice I could offer is to have a descent ride on one . The bike is physically larger but not cumbersome in my opinion.
Gday Mark, yes I’m also a big Goldwing fan (the 1800 six) and have many an hour riding one. I think what grabbed me with the big Beemer is the massive power of the awesome in line 6 and the ability to still put up a good fight with my younger counterparts on a track day or blast through the windy twisties. As far as reliability goes I hope your wrong but fear your right if that makes sense, the stable has three Beemers in it nowadays (GS-RT & the K ) , so far so good but time will tell. I have to say after almost 50 years of riding Japanese bikes I’ve developed a healthy respect for their build quality & reliability, let’s hope the Deutschland machines can give ma a similar run, glad you enjoyed the video mate. Cheers.
I am on my 3rd BMW motorcycle in 15 years and I have never had any issues. All I have had is regular maintenance - oil & tire changes. Gold Wing owners like to perpetuate the myth that BMW bikes are prone to breakdown but that has not been my experience. I will say that that BMW bikes I have owned are thrilling rides. Gold Wings are lacking character. The K1600 engine is a marvel of technology. It sounds like an F1 engine above 7000 RPM. However, if you want to toodle along the freeway slab, the Gold Wing is the bike for you. For myself, I want a bike that lights my hair on fire in the twisties. The K1600 does that for me.
Great review, Steve. And I love how you answer all questions I just got a brand new 2019 K1600GT (yeah, new old stock) and I am coming from adventure bikes, so I am used to the occasional dirt or forestry road. I see you are running Michelin L2 tires, would you recommend those tires or something else for this bike? I do not intend to go full blast on dirt, but I do not want to say no to it if one crosses my path! Cheers from Canada
Gday Jorge, glad you liked the review. Yes I think the Michelins are a pretty good choice for this bike, remembering this is an interesting motorcycle. Tyre choice is a bit tricky, it’s a tourer and a sports bike which narrows the field a bit when it comes to tyres. Pirelli also have a couple of good choices for the K1600. Wow a new 19 in 24 ! Well the 19,s were a great machine and no doubt priced accordingly so well done, if you’re going to venture off the black be very wary of that small dia front wheel. Ride safe 👍
A very detailed review. Enjoyed it. It is very nice that on this model BMW already used the "standards" turning signal location on one side instead of having left-left and right-right like on some older models. Is it in the manual that is should have the 100-octane fuel only? Thanks for the answer. Got my full watch. Cheers. Ride safe.
Glad you liked it! I think it recommends 95 Oct min, that’s based on the Aussie fuel rating system but the number rating is different in other parts of the world. I did try on the lower rated unleaded (91 in Aus) but it got a ping under acceleration, not good. cheers.
The little black key is called a bmw Service key. I Like your review very Detailed you must have spent a lot of time making this video Steve . I Bet you have just put 2g on the price now..
Hi Steve, thanks and glad you enjoy the video. Yes some time was spent making it for sure but as you probably guessed I enjoyed every minute of it. Service key ! yep after editing I did see it referred to that in some of the paperwork, next time. Let’s hope your right in regards to the 2g, cheers.
Thanks Raymond glad you enjoyed it, quick correction though absolutely no fake motor noise whatsoever. I ran three Rohde mics on the bike with distortion hush. The external audio was done with a directional mic, that is how the big six sounds. Cheers.
Nice review! Of course it's your bike and you use it as you wish. Riding in dirt will ruin and fill the water radiator and cause overheating problems. It happened to me because I use it in winter on salted roads. yes it can run quickly, but GSA is much better and usable bike. GT is perfect tourer.
Ive had 3 BMW's currently on a harley Davidson road glide limited, i luv them both. I like hd btr because of the btr dealer network. Ill probably stay harley Davidson, they really are fun and dependable, i was really surprised, u gotta own one 2 understand i guess? I enjoy riding my hd more then any of my bmws...
Yes , I think one has to live with a motorcycle for a while to really work out if it suits their lifestyle, it’s very hard to determine that just riding a couple of blocks from a dealership then be expected to hand over the cash. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Cheers.
Hi Jeff, thanks and glad you enjoyed the video. Biggest danger in Aus off rd is the wildlife. Not so bad on the IC bikes but on the elec bike they don’t hear you coming. Cheers.
Great review! Thank you! I drove in the past bikes like Yamaha J650 and BMW F800GT. Now at age 63 I am looking for my next may be last bike ... first thought got towards the BMW R1250GT ... but your review makes me considering the bigger solution ... the BMW K1600GTL ... doesn't it have also a reverse gear? ...
Beautiful bike and great review! Can I ask how many Kilos r Miles your bike had when you purchased it ? I just discovered the K1600 this past week and have one lined up to buy this weekend
Gday Frank, I think about 45000kms (28000 miles) without checking the books. I love it, it’s one of the few bikes I’ve owned that I go for a ride not to go somewhere but just for the sake of riding it. She’s the first 6cyl bike I’ve owned (have ridden many others but they haven’t tempted me to buy them) and I think it’s a combination of that beautiful smooth 6 but with all the added comfort & features BMW have put into it that make it a truly wonderful riding experience. Caveat it’s heavy, this makes it incredibly nice on the road but tricky to move around at home if you’ve got undulating surfaces. When your out and about you just park accordingly of course, I’m not sure the K1600 really has any peer’s when it comes to it’s versatility to become four bikes essentially. A fantastic long distance touring bike, a weekend warrior sports bike (albeit a heavy one) a Sunday bagger and big city commuter. You’ll notice I left out trail bike, only a dope would take it off rd. Good luck with your purchase, let me know how you go. Cheers.
This is all nice and paints a rosy picture of this bike. Mine is a 2012 GT K1600. Just rode it on a 200 mile round trip, my back hurts, my right hand is numb and the windshield basically sucks as it offers not much protection. I am 6ft tall, compared to a GSA and my old RT this bike is NOT for long distance touring. Some people tells me I have to replace the seat, the windshield, handle bars....etc. before it is comfortable. What is the point ??
Interesting summary of your experience with the K1600, I’ve done several 950 mile return trips on this particular bike in the review. I found it to be a competent tourer but definitely in need of a touring windshield which I did & it solved the problem, in fact the difference was chalk & cheese. I’m not sure about your numb right hand, this motor is silky smooth (or should be) & the bike has cruise control which should alleviate the need for a tight grip on the throttle. I didn’t have a problem with the seat or bars but for my old enduro knees I do find the pegs a bit high after a couple of hours. I guess sometimes in life a bike just doesn’t fit. I also own a Goldwing and would highly recommend taking one for an extended ride. It’s a wonderful ride not only for the pilot but the passenger also if that applies, it’s not as quick nor does it handle like the K1600 but really is a great long distance tourer. Your welcome to spend a couple of hours on mine if your local, I’m In Hahndorf.
@@standupmoto I was not talking about the Motor which is amazing. I did use the Cruise Control but can't use it all the time. I need to get more padding on the grips, it is very thin and uncomfortable. I don't like the riding position compared to my previous GSA or my old RT. Not to mention the useless things that keep breaking down, like the tire pressure sensors.
Hi Keith, yes for sure. I can easily fit my Shoei Neotec 2 and gloves, balaclava plus some in the panniers. My mistake not showing this when doing the review, learning all the time. Cheers.
Great review. I am looking for a bike and think just found it. I don't like the top speed, however at 68 I think I am through outracing cops . . Minor adjustment. :)
Thanks Gerard, yes they are a wonderful bike, I’m sure there are some programs out there that can bypass the limiter. (not that I would recommend it of course) Cheers.
Hello! I have a BMW K 1600GT 2012. Could you please guide me on how to properly use the bike's Bluetooth system and what communication accessories to buy? I want to be able to listen to music, talk on the intercom with my passenger and hear the GPS directions at the same time! Is it possible and what additional equipment do I need? Thanks!
Hi, there is a video on UA-cam that I used to do exactly this, I will try to find it and send it to you. The Bluetooth I use is the Sena system in my Shoei Neotec 2 helmet, the intercom system is great. it allows you to talk to your passenger and also fellow riders (if they also have that system) with excellent clarity & battery life. The stereo system is in my opinion really not that good on the bike and in my case anyway I prefer to use the phone if listening to the radio. The nav in your bike being a 12 will probably need updating to have the latest maps etc but once again the phone is probably easier (it’s always up to date). Ride safe, they are a wonderful machine. Cheers.
I have a 2020 Triumph Rocket that is just about worn out, too many miles. I am thinking of the K1600, have you ridden a Rocket and if so how do you compare the two?
Hi Jim, I’ve only had limited time on a Rocket (1/2 a day) but I think the immediate difference to me would be the handling & braking. The K1600 is primarily a touring machine but it rides like a big sports bike in the twisties. They are both similar in hp but the big Beemer is fast-real fast if you get into it. On the flip side it’s also crazy efficient if you ride it properly, it’s got all the mod cons as you would have seen in the video but if I had a complaint I’d say maybe the pegs are a little high for my tired old motocross knees. This one is the GT, maybe the GTL has slightly lower pegs but I’m not really sure. Overall the big 6 is a lovely motorcycle to ride but I’d definitely try to get an extended ride on one to see if it suits your style. 👍
A valid question indeed, yes the BMW is quite expensive to service compared to Japanese machines for sure. Oil & filters you can do your self but beyond that unless you’re a mechanic familiar with this type of bike the dealer is going to be the best. On the flip side the K1600 truly is a magnificent powerful riding experience.
Very informative, I was offered a swap for my hayabusa gen3 for a 21y gt model, but what put me off was the throttle response just reving it had a big delay, wireless I assume! Is this normal on this bike, for me it's a deal breaker, it would drive me to distraction 😅
Hi Richard, no not something I’ve found with this one but I can’t talk for the later models. However I wouldn’t be in a hurry to hop of the Busa, I have spent some time on the big Suzi and they are a great machine.
I think that’s the right money for that bike, assuming it’s got all the service history etc. It also has the keyless ignition, something mine hasn’t, servicing isn’t cheap so if it’s almost due see if the owner will take the price of a service off. Good luck with your purchase, you’ll love it, cheers.
@@standupmoto Thank you for writing back and I'm sure he has. He did the valve one already. I plan on doing the oil changes myself but i'm also looking for the 2022 version since it has the new navigation screen. I saw a 2022 k1600 for 20k in Michigan.
@@BlackBirdieGolf My pleasure, I hope you find the right bike. Just one thing, the GPS was something I got all hung up over when I was looking for this one but in reality I find I use my iphone via Bluetooth to my helmet most of the time. 🙂
@@standupmoto most car navigations suck so I'm not surprised. Most people use their phone navigation while on a bike or in their car. LOL. Thanks for the info!
Finally a real review with a dude who rides it like he stole it. Well done sir
Cheers mate 👍
Agreed. Top review
He had it catching air on a dirt road ! 😱
This is the kind of review and reviewer I can trust ! 👌😎
P.S: I always held hope they would make an RS or R version of this Beast but so far . . . NOTHING.
You're missing the opportunity, BMW !
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, I’m still trying to grow the channel so as I can do more reviews. Feel free to share with anyone you may feel would be interested, it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
You mean a GS 😂
@13MittaMitta13 Also R/RS, a nice sport tourer (RT) and whatever the R suffix means
This has to be the most thorough review of a motorcycle I've seen. Covers all bases, answers all questions. Thank you
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it and hope it helps if you are interested in buying one of these. :-)
A really thorough review from someone who clearly knows what he is talking about. Thank you. Great off road sequences. I look forward to his trials capability review of the Triumph Rocket 3. Legend.
Cheers mate thanks & yes the Rocket 3 is coming for a review when I can find one👍
The best thing about the K1600 is the Gold-Wing....because so many riders think the G-W is the undisputed king of big-bore touring and won't buy anything else. Thus here in the UK a used K1600 can be yours for as little as a quarter of the new price.
Gday BB, yes they have certainly taken a beating price wise here in Aus lately, main concern I get from owners is the price of servicing.
What an eye opening review!! I am not shitting you, having watched your review I have just booked a test ride on a new K1600 for Tuesday and if I can manage the weight I am definitely buying one! Cheers mate!
No worries, my pleasure. Love to hear what you think, ride safe.👍
The best touring bike I’ve ever ridden. I owned a GT for years.
Yes I have to say it sets the bar pretty high 👍
What a great review! I am really enjoying my 14 GTL. A few things:
I made a few ergo mods to fit my 6’5” self. A 7Jurock windscreen, Russell Day-long saddle and Heli bars. Also have aftermarket bright lights and flashing tail light.
The bike eats rear tires for breakfast
Riding the twisties puts a huge grin on my face
I have 36k miles and have had no problems. Been absolutely reliable
I can ride 600 mile days and still want more.
Changed the High beams to LED .
Just changed the XENON HID to LED also… easy job , just the bike a lot.
Great review!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, are the LED lights better?
Best overview I’ve seen on a K1600..
Thanks Dwight glad you enjoyed it.
P
Excellent review. Well done. I just purchased a 2012. Can’t wait to pick it up in two days.
Ah great, based on my experience you’ll love it. Use that cruise, they’re pretty easy to creep over the limit. Enjoy, cheers.
You by far make the best motorcycle I think I’ve watched. Thanks for your hard work!
Wow, thanks!
Now this is what I want from a bike review…great job!
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it.
Cheers 👍
Impressive the off road performance, you make it seems easy! Great riding techniques.
Thanks 👍
Wow what a review. Best one I have seen on a k1600gt
Thanks Jay, my job was made easier here because it was just such a great bike. Glad you enjoyed it, cheers.
Just got a 2012 K1600 GT with 24,000 miles. Beauty.
Well done, you’ll love it 👍
Sending it on the dirt!
Balls of steel
Great content mate
Cheers mate 👍
Hi Sacha, glad you enjoyed the video. Your wife may just have a point there, “ Engage” . Cheers.
Hi, just purchased a 2011 K1600 and your dash review was really helpful! Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great review! Never knew they had the Grain Header as a attachment. Keen to see that up and running in the next review! 🚜 🌾🌾
Thanks Ethan, well as I say in the video she’s fully optioned. Cheers.
Cheers.
I absolutely love my K1600 GT, super bike. I use my F800- GT for commuting though thru London traffic
Hi David, yes the 1600 is a beast for sure but your 800 would be a better choice in the traffic.Haven’t ridden in UK traffic but from what I’ve seen it looks pretty hectic. Cheers.
Excellent and very thorough review! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Really great review. Just bought one of these and this is so much better than the users manual. Great review.
Glad it was helpful!
Cheers.
Fantastic review Great to see some content coming out of Australia
Cheers mate 👍
As a K1600 owner, I consider the GW ist still state of the art.
Brilliant review, love your style and the BMW wasn't bad either, going to start saving my pennies.
Hi Terry, thanks and glad you enjoy it. Cheers.
Outstanding video loved the way you detailed each part of the bike and how it rides. It really makes me want to buy a K1600 just to have one lol. I own a Harley street glide love heavy planted bikes. All big bikes have mechanical issues and none of the dealerships do you any favors on pricing. I do most of my own work on my bike and truck just be sure to get the service manual saves you headaches and $$$$
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it, yes it’s certainly a money saver if you can do most of your service work yourself. 👍
Wow!! Amazing review and my wife and I are going to look at the exact same one Friday…hopefully the pictures are right and we will bring it home SOON!!
You’ll love it if you do. Glad you enjoyed the the video, thanks.
What a beautiful bike. I’m excited. God willing I’ll be getting one this
year. First I have to sell my 09 Royal star venture.
Amazing video.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, Yes they are a brilliant motorcycle, fast, feature packed & with the brakes and suspension to match.
best review i've seen in a long time, goog job
Thanks very much.
K1600 Adventure bike . . . Great Idea!!
Well maybe not adventure but being where I am in Aus dirt rd riding is unavoidable sometimes 👍
😂😂😂
Best review ever 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks mate, much appreciated.
Cracking review man, came apon it by accident, suscribed to your channel. Keep the videos coming. And hello from bonny Scotland. 👌
Cheers mate, glad you enjoyed it 👍 Great to hear from Scotland.
Picking up a 2020 GTL on Wednesday, slightly more excited if possible now, after watching this 👍
Well done, you’ll love it.
love the color
Good job on the review 👍. Very meticulous! Very informative.
Thank you kindly! cheers.
I have a feeling you love your K1600 👍
Another Great Bike Review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I did look at getting a K1600 GT
But being 5’7” out of my reach Ha !
After seeing your ex-police bike review l did buy a 2016 R1200RT Ex-police
98ks. $9k Beautiful 😍
I also have a R nine T 2016 Beautiful
and a Bone rattler ! XS650 1982 special Yamaha so all my base’s are covered
Thank You again for a Smart and Entertaining Show 👍
Gday Chris glad you enjoyed it & hope that RT is looking after you (seeing as it’s my fault you bought it).
Gday James, yes have done. A great machine agreed.
Great review and only confirms what i love about mine. I've been riding twenty plus years on everything from R1 to GS. And these are by far the best bikes. The Mrs hates it being on the back and I keep up with the pocket rockets getting the pegs down!! From motorways to B roads.....superb.
Cheers Darren, yes they are one very special bike for sure. Glad you enjoyed the video and please share👍 cheers.
Cheers.
Dirt tracking a K1600...... are you crazy !?!? 😄 Great review, terrific bikes 👍
Maybe a little bit 🤪, glad you enjoyed it 👌
Awesome review and to see a aussie doing a review in our own backyard
Cheers mate 👍
Really enjoy your videos there's another Aussi who rides Harley's through the out back you guys love dirt roads.
Hey Ed thanks glad you enjoy them, I’ll check out the Harley guy.
Both bikes have their positives & negatives but both are great machines, thanks Al. cheers.
@@standupmoto Congrats to you. Good choice, brother. Looking forward for that. Safe and happy ride !!!!!
Fantastic review, thanks for your effort, keepup the good work.
Thanks Alan, will do. Cheers.
Love this review I have this exact bike in the UK. Same colour same year. Very thorough and entertaining review.
Thanks gad you enjoyed it!
Cheers.
Very nice review. What a mighty machine.
Gday Stizza, yes certainly is, she’s heavy though which I know is important for comfortable long distance touring but can be a bit tricky when parking, in other words always back her in because you’ve got no chance of pushing it. Thanks for the comment, cheers.
@@standupmoto . Have you still got your super tenere?. Great bike also. Cheers
Hi Ray, left my thoughts on which bike I prefer on your comments on the Goldwing review 👍
What a great review. Thanks very much for such an insightful vid on this bike. I love it but just looking at the knee angle as I am 6ft 5 and seeing what can be done to improve it.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, they are a great machine but yes if you are long in the leg definitely try one for at least an hour.
@@standupmoto Thanks for the advice. Quick question is the K1600 roomier than the RT1250?
@@martynlaverick3405 Hi yes , I would say it is a little as far as seating is concerned but the pegs are still relatively high if you have long legs. Best advice I could offer is to have a descent ride on one . The bike is physically larger but not cumbersome in my opinion.

Excellent review!
Thanks glad you enjoyed it, cheers.
Very very comprehensive review👍🏿
Thanks 👍
Best presentation!
Glad you liked it, cheers.
great video!!
Thank you!!
Fun video . I prefer my Goldwing . Less expensive service and better reliability.
Brakes are partially-linked. Front brake application uses both brakes evenly, rear brake activation engages the rear brake only.
Thanks for the info, cheers.
If you use the rear brake, it doesn’t affect the front brake.
This guy's crazy! I got a party with him.
Great review, Steve. And I love how you answer all questions
I just got a brand new 2019 K1600GT (yeah, new old stock) and I am coming from adventure bikes, so I am used to the occasional dirt or forestry road.
I did try on the lower rated unleaded (91 in Aus) but it got a ping under acceleration, not good. cheers.
@@standupmotoI see. The higher, the better. Thanks for the answer. Keep going.
Very well done revue except the fake motor noise
Thanks Raymond glad you enjoyed it, quick correction though absolutely no fake motor noise whatsoever. I ran three Rohde mics on the bike with distortion hush. The external audio was done with a directional mic, that is how the big six sounds. Cheers.
One of the reasons the screen goes down when the ignition is off is for security, as it blocks access to the sat nav 'compartment'.
Yes that’s right, it’s something I didn’t cover in my review. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the tips!
Very good report, mate!
Thank you.
In the final stages of purchasing my K1600GT, thankfully it'll be in GBP so not a big hit on the pocket for around £7000 low mileage 2014.
Hi Dereck, you’ll love it. Your prices are certainly reasonable in the UK, good used K1600s are scarce here in Aus.
@@standupmoto ; cheers mate, Thanks for a great all round review.
Haha, I waited till the last second to see you on the track with this monster.
Hopefully you enjoyed it anyway, had a drama with advertising issues, long story 👍
@@standupmoto Oh I did. What kind of issues, did you film ads on the side of the track?
@@TheHkluivert Exactly, didn’t realise it was an issue.
Great review.
Thanks heaps, glad you enjoyed it 👍.
I just bought an ex police K 1600 GT 2014 model, hope it will serve me well!
Great stuff you’ll love it, cheers.
My butt clenched to see you going that fast offroad. But it's probably no big deal for an Aussie LOL. Great review thanks!
Now at age 63 I am looking for my next may be last bike ... first thought got towards the BMW R1250GT ... but your review makes me considering the bigger solution ... the BMW K1600GTL ... doesn't it have also a reverse gear? ...
Danke Hans glad you enjoyed it, the 1600 is a wonderful bike and the later models do have reverse. Cheers.
Cheers.
Have a 2011 model coming up on 84000k. Great bike.. you scared me on the gravel bits.. lol
Cheers Mitch glad you enjoyed the video, they are a great machine for sure 👍
Fantastic review! I'm new to touring bikes, recently bought a Triumph Sprint GT and loving it, but the k1600 is now on my wish list. Subscribed! 😀
Thanks mate welcome aboard! Yes they are a rocket tourer for sure but don’t fall in love with that rear tyre 😂
It wad already review thanks.. I wished you could play the music on the bike.. overall it was a complete review.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Great review! Are the side bags large enough to fit a full face helmet?
saya suka video ini dan suatu hari nanti saya harus punya motor ini...salam dari indonesia ❤️
ya mereka adala sepeda motor yang luar biasa sangat bertenaga. senang anda menikmati videonya.
I own a 2002 fjr and love it but in the future maybe this bike but only scared for maintance on beemers so whats the deal?
Great review. I'm looking at the k1600 2021 with 10k miles on it. Selling is offering $18,500. How much would you offer?
How many miles on this when purchased? Would be nice to know what failures were fixed prior to your purchase.
The books only showed service work, if other work was performed it wasn’t recorded.👍
