  • In this luxury coupe comparison, Carlos Lago from Edmunds takes an in-depth look at two popular sports cars, the Chevy Corvette C8 and BMW M4 Competition. You might not think these two sport coupes would have much in common, but the Corvette and M4 share many similarities. Both are rear-wheel-drive two-door coupes that have around 500 horsepower. They have similar prices, and both are insanely fun to drive. Which one is the better choice? We answer that question and more in this exciting sports car comparison of the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette vs. 2021 BMW M4 Competition.
With the eighth-generation Corvette (or C8), Chevrolet moved away from the classic front-engine layout to a new mid-engine layout. The change dramatically improves the driving experience. The 2020 Corvette C8, with a 6.2-liter V8 and dual-clutch automatic transmission, glides effortlessly around the track. The steering and handling are such that the driver has the utmost confidence to push this Chevy sports car to its limits. Speed has always been a calling card of the Corvette, and the 2020 model doesn't disappoint - it's really fast. Add all these factors up, and it's easy to see why the Chevrolet Corvette C8 is consistently ranked as one of the best sports cars.
The BMW M4 Competition is a worthy opponent for the Corvette. Redesigned for 2021, the M4 is faster and more powerful than the previous generation. A turbocharged 503-horsepower six-cylinder engine and improved suspension work together to put all that power to the road. The M4 is based on the BMW M3 sedan, so it is a little longer and taller than the Corvette. The 2021 M4 also has a back seat, so there's more interior space in BMW's sports car. Fun, fast and powerful, the 2021 BMW M4 Competition is a force on the track and on the road.
These two similar sports cars are the stars in this luxury sports car comparison test. The Chevrolet Corvette and BMW M4 Competition are both rear-drive two-door sport coupes with 500 hp. It would be hard to go wrong with either, but which is the right choice for you? We have our preference, but everyone is different and we're here to help you make the best decision. It's the 2020 Chevy Corvette C8 vs. 2021 BMW M4 Competition sports car comparison test.

With the nose on that M4? Yeah, but no. It doesn't matter how good a car it is, I can't get past the nose on that M4.
I have to admit, however, that I really don't like the square steering wheel on the Corvette.

C8. Not even close. I came out of a fully loaded 340i into the C8, and the cars are not even in the same league. My BMW was nice and was fast, but it drives like a front engine/transmission sport sedan, not like a mid engine sports car. The C8 handling and driving feel are just awesome - I drove it on Tail of the Dragon, what a phenomenal experience.

Drove these cars back to back at the track, I agree 100% Corvette is easier to go fast, and more composed at speed. M4 was more lively and required way more input. I prefer the vette, because I can cruise with the top off and it rides amazing.

Very in-depth review of these cars and for that reason very telling. Carlos is still one of the best in the business of relating the essence of a vehicle and how that translates to ‘real-world’ driving. The track experience lets him push these cars harder than on public roads and reveals what was each cars’ pros and or cons.
Keep up the great work Edmunds!

Carlos, yes the M4 is not as quick from a dead stop, but even your acceleration data shows the M4’s dominance once rolling... it takes the M4 8.1s to go from 60 mph to its 122.7 mph 1/4 mile trap speed.. meanwhile the C8 takes longer (8.3s) to go from 60 mph to its lower 1/4 mph trap of 119.7 mph. I placed my deposit August 2020 with the dealer and the car is just now going to be built @ the GM plant this coming week. I have a 2022 xDrive on order, the exact same spec as this, except the carbon seats. They are horrible for daily. But same color, same wheels and CCBs for the same cost. The XDrive is $4,100 more, so that makes up for the price of me not getting the carbon seats. $102,880.
However, you’re not doing a very good job of explaining the difference in options. The M4 has $8,100 carbon ceramics, and $3,800 optional carbon seats. $2,500 full Merino Leather, and $4,800 carbon exterior package, full 360 cameras and $1,750 for the paint color upgrade. The Corvette, by comparison, is a 2LT with just a Z51 package. Fully optioned C8 without Carbon ceramics, can get over $100k. The $5,000 carbon 5VM exterior package for the C8 isn’t available to order anymore, or it would be more than the M4 fully specd.

3745lbs BMW to 3365lbs Corvette, so obviously handling is slightly compromised but 1/4mile is only 0.3 seconds different for the C8.
Top speed for both is near enough same albeit the BMW comes with the European restriction (if your market) but with the BMW you can have her tweaked just a little and gain a lot more power buy a custom MAP Configuration and that’ll add another 50-65hp (safe) which would make it a lot quicker.
We don’t all drive on tracks regularly and most of these vehicles will never see one, so drifting is pointless especially If you like your driveshafts and don’t want to spend $800 on a set of rear tyres every month.
It’s your money, and if resale after a couple years is important to recoup something back then go with the obvious especially if you’re trading in or having something less common.
