The Visual Effects of Psychedelics - broken down and described

  • This video attempts to break down and describe the most common visual effects of the psychedelic experience, in accordance with the terminology laid out within our Subjective Effect Index and in collaboration with various artists from the r/replications community.
I put this video together for our subreddit, in order to serve as an introductory piece to the concept of formalized subjective effect documentation. I am very much new to exporting my content into UA-cam videos such as this, but I hope I did an alright job as I'm really looking forward to creating more videos like this in the future! Next up, I would really like to create an in depth phenomenological analysis of psychedelic geometry.

After dabbling with 4-5 gram doses of mushroom I decided to go all in, away on holiday in Wales I starved myself for 24hrs. I did 8grams of dried mushrooms with lemon juice that I'd left to breed for an hour, I then topped up with a huge 5 gram fresh mushroom. All I can really say about the trip is I lost all feeling of myself, I revisited some very deep emotional hurdles in my life and I was convinced I would never get back to reality, I fact at several points I was praying to see reality again and realising that however mundane reality appears it is a complete privilege to be part of it. I also felt lonelyness like no other, I went through all my loved ones in my head and could feel what it would be like when they have gone. Visually I saw trees dancing in a cartoon like motion, the sky was dancing and I could see deep into the clouds all whilst feeling an overwhelming recognition that there are several dimensions, several realities and a meaning that I could not figure out. This being the meaning of life. It was an absolutely profound experience that lasted four hours but felt like an eternity.
Once back in reality I thanked the higher forces for returning me there, I text and called familly members and told them how much I love them. The whole experience was amazing but also very sobering, on the up side I've learnt how to live in the moment again, depression is a thing of the past and the connection I feel to earth is stronger than I ever imagined.

Just a quick note to those who haven't taken a psychedelic before and may not be aware:
You also FEEL these visuals. I never knew that before my first mushroom trip, which made it quite unsettling and overwhelming (for the first 30-45 mins). You will settle into it if you're the sort who jives well with the compound, but it's very much worth knowing before you dive in. The visual phenomena are more than just visual. Are you ready to feel the drift, the melting, the geometry, or even the entities/3D spaces? If not, maybe don't jump into this stuff yet, but that's not a hard and fast rule either. Just know you'll be in for a VERY strange, and possibly profound experience. Safe travels!

    • @invanorm
      @invanorm Рік тому +30

Exactly, many people don’t realise this before going in. I try to tell people that what the drug does to the visual sense it also does to every other sense, and not in a way that is simply a distortion of what could be thought of as the “outer” world, but the inner as well, such that there really is no escape from the experience.

In my experience the entities witnessed are autonomous however the “wisdom” they lead towards hints at it all being illusory. So yes you may sit face-to-face with some altruistic being during a psychedelic trip, but they are no more real than the people you interact with daily. I’ve dabbled with DMT over time and now find the experience has both visually and intuitively evened out. In the end I drifted from atheism to Taoism because what’s described in the Tao Te Ching was consistent with experimentation. Some may only get a few opportunities to try these substances due to availability or the inevitable fear that prevents any desire to dig too deep - as a result individuals can fall into a trap of projecting faux spirituality onto their personal identity... these generic hippy beatniks (apologies for lack of a better description) have missed the message. Cosmic mama doesn’t want you to join a movement or get her image tattooed on your back. Just sit still and be content.

I have done LSD at least 50 times and psilocybin as often if not more. With the way Hollywood depicts psychedelics/LSD/Mushrooms trips I would have never guessed there was this much well detailed information on what a trip is like. The experience can be very hard to explain to others but these visuals are spot on. The one thing this video cant tell people is that these hallucinations are often happening with feeling of joy or laughter. Without that, these experience could be quite scary and they can be for some but I always found the laughter in the weird things I would see. Great video!

  • @robd951

I have been blessed to have experienced every type of vision you detailed in this video. I always tell people there are two types of highs when using a psychedelic. There is tripping (everything in the video before geometric) and psychedelic ( most in your video after geometric). People try it at a lower dose and trip, then decide to take more next time and are not always ready for what a full blown psychedelic experience has to offer. It really can be like nothing you have ever seen or experienced before.

This was pretty accurate depictions based on my experiences. My last trip was by far the deepest down the rabbit hole I've gone. I saw the most wild fractal geometry with so many glyphs and sigils as to be almost meaningless. I also had 3-5 entities talking to me at one point but I don't remember what we said. At my highest point, I felt like I knew everything I ever wanted to know and not only that, but also that I had imagined my entire existence and also that I've been at the point I was at before. It was honestly so crazy that I forced myself to forget most of it on my comedown so as to maintain my sanity

I found that it took quite a high dose of psilocybin mushrooms to get beyond mild visual distortion and intensifying of colors (I especially noticed that green was very intense - all plants and trees looked incredibly brilliant and detailed) to actual geometric hallucinations. My geometric hallucinations only occurred with my eyes closed and consisted of electrically brilliant lavender, blue, yellow, and red paisley-like patterns seemingly lit up by a brilliant light from the upper right visual field. These would disappear when I opened my eyes and real surroundings would take on a rippling, wave-like distortion. What I was really after was ego dissolution and transcendence. That was far more important than the visuals, fantastic as they were.

@@Pipsqwak I feel like only scary trips can cause ego dissolution. And from my experience it is not as good as people make it out to be. For me, it kicked off after I was certain I was dying after hours of panick over feeling like im going to die an shaking from being so scared I somehow fell asleep. When I woke up everything felt fake. Like a dream but without the confusion. You know its reality but it doesn't feel like it. People looked like they were apart of a movie like they had a purpose to be where they are at the time like background characters in movies how they seem to belong, while I was just there. I saw the world in a 3rd person type of view. Not literal 3rd person but the feeling of it, or like im just watching my days go by as if I was stuck in someone else body and im just observing or on autopilot its hard to describe. Sometimes Id have a couple seconds where it felt like I zoomed back into reality, in the present, and that I was me and not on autopilot then itd be ripped away from me where Id go back into the dream like state of mind and on autopilot. This lasted for a few years I hated it then one day I zoomed back into the reality state of mind and stayed, i was back in the moment and not feeling like an observer, it was actually a very scary experience but sometimes I miss it. Its very weird.
Side note: Im not sure if this was even ego dissolution\death or just a form of ptsd from the bad trip, but to me I since I didn't even feel like I was person and just a consciousness observing I call it ego death and if it is actually ego death I dont understand why people would be chasing it. I said I sometimes miss it, but only for about a day not something Id want to experience everyday for years like I did.

Hopefully it'll help draw more attention to the concept :)

Easily the best description I’ve seen; these really are the visuals you see. A lot of people don’t talk about the more important part of a trip, though, being mindset. Once you’re in an intense trip, the visuals really become second hand to the most impactful part, which is what you’re thinking. That’s why it’s unexplainable. These visuals seem cool (and they are), but it’s the feelings they evoke and tell you that make the trip so beautiful.

I completely agree with you. In my opinion the most important and significant effects which psychedelics induce are the cognitive effects or more specifically, the therapeutic and transpersonal cognitive effects. Documentation of such experiences obviously don't translate as well into a video format as visual effects, but we do have it all mapped out to an equal extent! :)

Probably one of the best videos describing levels of tripping. It's very difficult to explain to a person what they will experience when it's a visual experience - this was a very good "pre-trip" video on what to expect. Shout out to the whole team for making this.

This is some outstanding work coming up from the community. Really well done, I don't think visual replications of altered states of consciousness get enough cover, they can serve so many roles, one of them being people checking out how it is REALLY like during tripping on a specific substance and if they want to get into it, not just some stereotypic bullshit or changing hue. Other one, of course, reminiscing your own experiences. Thanks for a great and important video!

VERY WELL DONE !! This was a free, controlled, pleasant LSD flashback. You really hit the nail on the head. I'd say,
"But what about..." then you'd say "breathing." And describe it perfectly, when it happens & why, & how to shake it off.
One thing I find is missing from current psyche discussions is the exclusion of the "Bad Trip." We did everything we could to avoid this: dosing in a group, having an inexhaustable supply of "fry" toys (visual enhancers, kaliedoscopes, prisms, etc), PMA. But all of my friends that stopped trippng can remember that one time, sht went downhill & they couldn't stop it. That's why I stopped. If you're gonna try it, I reccommend 4th of July or any fireworks display time, and Halloween, masks & facial makeup + costumes = a great time !!
In the words of Roy Rogers & the Sons of the Pioneers, ""Happy Trails to you, until we meet again !"

One hallucingenic visual effect that is not mentioned in this amazing video is the "faces-swapping" that can happen on high doses of MDMA. Usually happens watching strangers faces which shift into faces of friends or family members.
With high doses of MDMA you can also experience visual effects of faces assuming a demoniac/evil expressions for a split second when you watch them.

I remember the first time I smoked weed with my friends when I was probably 14, and I got very minimal but noticeable visual effects. The best way I could describe it then was like a movie. It seemed to be closest described in this video as drifting. It was more like the image burning into my head as I looked away, like the image outline and details would stay for a second as I looked away. I just remember us standing outside looking around, and I saw this happening, it was my notifier to be like “okay, you’re definitely high now.” This being my first time smoking or getting high, it was certainly different but didn’t make me anxious or concerned at all, it was pretty cool. The way the image would stay in my view as I looked at something else was fascinating, especially for never experiencing it before, even crazier that I only smoked weed to get to that point. Makes me think about how much weed has changed over the years. I don’t even like to smoke now bc I usually get a bad high, more mentally straining, it’s like trying to focus and enjoy the high but a constant string of thought or sentence is going on in my head, and I can’t do anything else, it sucks. I miss those first times back in 2016/2017, smoking purp and og kush, it was so much more simple but I seemed to get more actually high rather than this state of constant thinking and not-so-fun experience I get now. RIP 2016 purp, you will be missed

I have tried a very small dose of shrooms before and it was pretty nice. I felt connected with nature and love of everything, but I never was able to reach the visual level of it. I want to do it again though, this time at least 2 to 3 shrooms so I can see some visuals and really get the whole experience.

I smoked dmt and saw a dragon covered in gold and jewels with eyes like Mario coins flipping back and forth and it kinda swam up and surrounded me and everywhere I looked were extravagant gold boxes encrusted with jewels and other ornate golden things I can’t really describe. Then a weird abstract shape started flopping and dancing around and I could feel the way it was shaped and knew how it felt when it moved. Truly mind boggling stuff

I love that they say, "This can create the feeling that one has broken through into another reality"
BRO that's exactly what we're doing lmao
As someone who trips often this video was pretty accurate and nice. I love the drifting images. It captures one of my favorite parts of tripping. The autonomous entities are the primary reason I trip though. Getting answers to all your questions from a higher form of conscience is the best feeling in the world. I come back rejuvenated. Somewhat alienated but I still love it. I don't feel as alone because I know they're always with me.
I wish I could record my trips and my dreams because let me tell you, I've seem some shit. Beautiful as hell.
