- Feeling spooky? Meet designer Darren Ransdell and his 100 year-old Hollywood home with otherworldly guests. Originally from Kentucky, a call to house-sit brought Darren to Los Angeles 30 years ago. His 1920's French Normandy style home is a constant chameleon. From hosting celebrities to serving as a set for film crews and fashion labels, Darren is always reinventing the space to accommodate his latest artistic endeavors. Friendly spirits are quick to make their presence known, however Darren is comforted knowing that they protect the energy that led him to fall in love with the home in the first place. I'm so happy you didn't 'upgrade' the kitchen. It reminds me of the kitchen I used to have. So much character, so much fun. I had the same tile but with a thin strip of a red in the back splash. I painted the walls in a buttermilk color, changed out the knobs to bakelite and added stuff. Best kitchen I ever had. Yours is wonderful.
A lot of people are doing this keeping the older kitchens so cool🔥

I was thinking the same thing.
I was thinking just the opposite! He seemed very uncomfortable, anything but relaxed but certainly not pretentious. This did not feel like a home to me. More like a shop. Like he said anything could be gone tomorrow.

I almost fell off my chair when he said he sold the chandelier in the dining room! To me that fits that room so well. He seems like a great guy, one who would be a blast to sit down and chat with! Wonderful home, gorgeous design and esthetics!

I have no idea why, but seeing his house made me burst into tears, especially seeing the kitchen because it reminds of my great grandmother. It’s really weird this touched me so deeply because she never lived in a house, but the duplex had a similar kitchen and the charm of this house reminds me of her for some strange reason. ❤❤
We never know what might trigger an emotional outpouring. We hold so much in. Hopefully you had great memories of your grandmother and it was probably cathartic.

This man is wonderful. His sense of whimsy is so fun. I live in a very formal 1902 victorian and keep things fun and relaxed by adding whimsy and unexpected items & art. Delightful home tour that he has curated in a personal way.

Love the foil paper in the bathroom but the doors that opened to the outside patio table was spectacular. He mentions the rains in L.A. 2023 is the best winter in a long time.

Oh I thought the stripes on the arch were purposely added with it being a 1920's home and assumed it was a nod to the era. Literally thought, "Oh, Egyptian Revival. Nice." Matches the period perfectly tbh

Honestly, I squeaked in surprise (and I'm not a squeaker at all:) when he casually said the chandelier rosette was a last-minute thing made from black poster board and he threw on some sparkly glue then surrounded it with an ornate gold picture frame - I mean, it looks like a million dollar custom job LOL. Love the house, the art, the man and his kitchen. This is so good - I need to watch it a second time. Those dining chairs OMG... THX for an amazing and inspiring tour.
You can change continually as you sell off pieces that others want..props for so many places..I totally connect with you having entities in your home that you are so comfortable with having them around..picked up many of your handy decorating tips..thankyou for inviting us in to your nest..❤
I like his idea to live with something for awhile and after to sell. That way you always have something fresh in your house and make some money, and give you motivation to find something new!

What a fascinating tour -- and I learned so much from your item-by-item presentations. Timely for me that you encourage us to create our own art as "place-keepers""--an inspiration from a professional for those of us who cannot afford the real thing. I'm swapping out a fancy xerox (!) of a midcentury artist's sketch right now for placement in a "real" antique frame. As a former Angeleno I am nostalgic for this incredible mecca for creatives.

Mr. Ransdell's home seems to go on and on and there is so much interesting stuff in it, which is so fun to hear the stories about. I like his tips for decorating. I also like his business ideas. His outdoor cabana is fantastic! What a smart idea! This guy is obviously an expert because it sounds like he's constantly decorating and redecorating because his stuff kind of flies out the door. I also get a sense that he likes art because everything in his home seems to really look good the way he has arranged it - and even the simple pictures he painted... it's very impressive the way they add to his rooms and compliment them very well. Mr. Ransdell is very gifted in a lot of ways. Although I wouldn't choose his lifestyle, he is inspiring, and it sounds kind of fun to dabble with some of the activities he chooses to do, especially while I'm still not completely certain of exactly how I would like to decorate or how I would like to use my home for entertaining purposes.

Thank you for sharing your home, I enjoyed it immensely. I also have a thing for hands and interesting chachkies. I collect (inexpensive ethnic, tribal, hippie) jewelry. Having way more than I'll ever wear, I put the big pieces in shadow boxes and hang as art! Regarding your house spirits, do you think any of them have arrived with fleamarket or estate or antique shop furniture? I've never had that happen to me, but I've heard other folks say it. Again, thanks for sharing, I envy your situation in which you can constantly collect and curate more interesting items as you move them along to other buyers. A dream come true. Cheers.

I LOVE this guy and equally love his home and style. Yes, there is a lot. But I get it. I recently saw him talking about that console table on Instagram. My only suggestion with this episode is that the camera linger longer on the pieces he is discussing. We didn't get to see the rug he found at a flea market that was so big it covers the entire floor. And other items he mentioned weren't focused on clearly IMHO. But regardless, another great episode and I love his down to earth personality and style. I especially love that he didn't destroy that darling original kitchen!
