At Home in Millbrook with Darren Henault

- Tag along to Millbrook, NY as we visit the stylish country home of interior designer Darren Henault! See how Darren renovated his 1800 farm house to accommodate his active family including now-teenage twin girls. Hear how he had to remove over 3,000 trees (which he donated to the town and friends) on this former Christmas tree farm to landscape the extensive property with a relaxed rural elegance. Learn how Darren has embraced country life and hear why he never wants to leave his country retreat with a plethora of outdoor activities from beekeeping and chickens, to an apple orchard and beautiful cutting garden. An avid equestrian, Darren need not venture far, as there is a stable nearby that houses his horses. Inside, you’ll see how Darren has created a home that nods to its 19th century heritage but fully accommodates a 21st century lifestyle. Watch and you’ll learn how specialty paint finishes and artisanal touches distinguish the decor of Darren’s beautiful home. Hear why the designer thinks bathrooms today don’t get the love they deserve and see how Darren’s thoughtful mix of pattern and layers, peppered with antiques mixed with contemporary art as well as estate sale finds make for a home that is as comfortable as it is personal. For more, be sure to see Darren’s chapter in Susanna’s and my latest book, At Home with Designers and Tastemakers. You’ll be inspired, informed and entertained!! For more visit quintessenceblog.com

I love how everyone always has cookies for Susana. ;-)
Me too!!
What a beautiful home that is so accommodating for the adults and the children. X
Exactly right! Glad you enjoyed!
I love the kitchen floor and the chaise to hang out and have a glass of wine
👍🏻
Congratulations Mr Darren Henault, beautiful house!
simple heaven.
I have loved this house for a long time, since I first saw it. I wish the videos were longer since there is so much more to the story. Darren is just so charming and funny. Thank you ladies for another great tour. Make a part 2!!!!
Our pleasure! Darren is so much fun - delighted you enjoyed tagging along!
Every time I watch an episode, without fail I think.."this is my favorite one!" It will be hard to beat At Home in Millbrook. This home is inviting, embracing and a legacy all wrapped in one.
Thank you!! Each is different and special in its own right!
This tv room with the walls of windows is too beautiful !!!
Yes of course...REAL people, REAL home, even if talented to beat the band! One has to mention the "exhaust house", the love and care of the children's rooms, the self contained-never have to leave qualities of the farm and the obvious closeness of the family.
Exactly!! Thanks Ginny!
Love the chinoiserie touches. It's just a beautiful home.
Love, love, love, love!
From the intro music to the beautiful homes This channel just soothes my soul 😊❤️😊
Thank you - delighted to hear that!
Look at those hydrangeas!!!
Aren't they fabulous?!
"We installed chickens." lol Lovely home!
A real, living and genuine home that is self aware and deliberate. And lovely to enjoy both within and out.
👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻
Love! Love! Love!!
I saw this house in another UA-cam channel and saved it. I watch it when I want to relax ha ha. This is a more extensive tour. Thanks for this!
Our pleasure!! Thanks for watching!!
Kitchen floor for the win
👍🏻
This home is a true sanctuary. I can't imagine ever wanting to leave. This was dreamy!
So glad you enjoyed!
Oh rebekka I hear ya girlfriend I would never leave either these homes on this channel are just beautiful no words sometimes 🙏🏿
Another amazing video. I am over the moon with joy when a new video comes out.
Susanna you are incredible.
Would be nothing without Stacey and our hosts!!
Absolutely 🌺
LOVE the pagoda pelmets! And the flower borders! Gorgeous. Thanks for the tour!
You are most welcome - glad you enjoyed!
Really enjoyed the subtleness of this family house •
It toured like it was indeed truly lived in and had evolved as the family had grown - that semi sheer painted kitchen floor is going to launch a huge re-interest in stenciled floors • bravo Susanna and Stacey and Darren and all the birds and bees and French bully XXX
Thank you Jill! Love that you always have something interesting and perceptive to add to the conversation!!
Hello! Thank you so so very much! What an amazing, beautiful, romantic, cosy home! This place is marvellous!!! In Portugal we love horses (Lusitano). Thank again and until your next video.
Our pleasure! So glad you enjoyed!!
Was feeling inexplicably in a down mood today until I just watched this!
Gorgeous house and gardens
As usual, a superbly hosted guided tour replete with Susannah bon-mots and gushes!
Mood magically lifted!
Thanks
Hurrah thank you!!!!!
I love this comment, you sound charming. So much personality and generosity of spirit which shines even in a small corner of a UA-cam comment section. Some have it, some don't. ;) Hope your radiant mood lasts through the weekend Adrien! :D
If I lived there I wouldn't want to leave either. What a wonderful homestead.
They have created their own version of paradise on this estate. Absolutely lovely!
It really is! Glad you enjoyed!
The honey trick is great for hay fever sufferers if you can get local, small keeper produced honey. Incidentally we also did hat house martin trick for the fan covers of the ground source pump. Of course it has to be a little larger so we trend it into a 'Vicar's Keep'.
Great tip and your pump cover sounds like a clever solution as well!
Absolutely BEAUUUUUUUUTIFUL home and property!!! I wouldn't want to leave it either.
👍🏻👍🏻
My favorite show!!! Wow, that floor in the kitchen was great and it brought out the personality of the kitchen. Love the different whites and I love that they made the house a home but with class and elegance! I must say the bathtub was to die for and the nook ... I would be hanging out in it reading all the time!!
Yes to all! Glad you enjoyed!!
A magical home and property! So much inspiration here 💖😘💐💗🌲
Me and Mister Husband have lived in the same apartment for the last 25 years (amazing view of the river at sunset). The side effect is my daydream of having a space on a lake that's big enough for a huge veg garden, a perennial flower garden and space for beehives. Thank you for the getaway.
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
In the meantime, it does sound like you have a great view to enjoy.
@@mollypitcher9380 The best view - the sun sets behind the Gatineau Hills. Really, the only downside was the month of February when Centretown was Occupied by anti-mask/vax protesters (they were double-parked on our street & the horror stories go on from there...).
Other than that it's a beautiful, walkable part of town with access to nature. The only thing we're really missing is bee hives...
Our pleasure!! Enjoy your views!!
The "peloton room" is the highlight for me. I could live in it -- in the warmer months, of course. Clever windows, too.
I need more of this home and property! We are definitely not finished here! In fact, it feels like we barely got started! There must have been some mistakes in compiling the rest of the footage in the edit suite! 😉☺️😊
Wow! So many thoughtful touches! So warm and inviting and thoughtfully beautiful! Love all the tones of white in the kitchen, loved the brilliance of the fabric wall covering and tuned really into his comment on everybody always editing their homes. When you acquire things you love there is less need for editing and the layers provide visual interest and excitement... and when done so expertly, there is no feeling of clutter or too much anything! FABULOUS!!! Seriously, we need the rest of this series... but hey, great introduction! 😉😁🥰 Great job!
I want every house I see on Quintessence. So many fascinating people. And I want that kitchen floor.
You are not alone!! We are inspired by every house we visit!
My favorite EVER.
Who is Darren Henault and how did he get so rich? The homes you display are so OVERWHELMINGLY beautiful that I can only tune in once in a while. Each video is so rich that they can’t be consumed in one sitting. This Millbrook house is an example. Susanna, you are amazing.
Thank you! The owners appreciate every square inch and feel as lucky to live in them as we do to visit them.
Breathtaking … your own OASIS!
"It's NOT a Winnie-the-Pooh thing!!" Lol!! I never knew the bears were after the larvae & not the honey. My first glimpse at the wavy kitchen floor gave me an optical illusion feel because that chair looked like it was somehow perched atop waves. Amazing. But I truly loved the entire home. Great tour!!
Glad you enjoyed!
The purple martin house vent cover is ingenious. Thank you, Susanna for taking us to these beautiful homes.
The bees and bears and a gorgeous hydrangea and stone wall. The kitchen and the bathrooms. The subtle stenciling and creative windows and the exercise room. Inside and outside, pure heavenly beauty. Thank you for the tour.
Our pleasure! So glad you enjoyed - a wonderful retreat!
So true! Source the honey from the closest beekeeper. It will battle spring allergies!
Amazing tip!
Luv it. ❤️
My dream kitchen...who's kidding who? My dream home... Beautiful.
It is very gratifying to see respectful additions to heritage houses. It can be difficult to fit modern life into some of these structures, but if we pay attention to what a house needs for mass, proportion, and detail, updates can be made with harmony.
Well put!!
Oh my gosh! I love everything about this property!!! So many wonderful places to just sit and enjoy!!! I'm in awe which doesn't happen often!! lol
So happy you enjoyed!!
So, there's an antiquated cemetery on the property? How cool!
He said they “had” one and refurbished it? So I guess they did away with it?? How sad
S I’m sure he meant it was cleared of overgrowth and any stones cleaned and repaired, rather than removed. Old properties like this in the Northeast often have family cemeteries on them.
Exquisite. Just the most charming, sympathetic renovation and decoration that works perfectly with the architectural history and the landscape/situation. It's friendly, comfortable, intelligent, warm and inviting. I can only imagine how breathtaking the atmosphere is on a late summer evening... that view over the lawn and over to the forests and trees. Ugh, I can't! Gorgeous. Who wouldn't love a holiday home like that?! Thank you so much for sharing Darren's charming home with us here.
WHat a Treat 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Thank You for doing this Ladies 😘😘😘
Our pleasure!!
Another spectacular video. Beautiful house & garden
It really is - glad you enjoyed!
😍Love every room in this house!!👍
I’ve been living in my father’s hospital room for 3.6 weeks…needed a diversion! Made my day to see this! Homes and places truly do transform our souls! I can’t wait to bring my father home! BTW, it’s not coveting our neighbor’s house if we are happy they have it but we just want it too…right? And can we say “kind”? Putting up name dropping guest for three months with their twins? My kind of people! Those bathrooms…couldn’t agree with him more!!! Thank you for another great vacation for my soul and candy for my eyes!
I hope your father is recovering well!! So happy to provide a welcome diversion and it's true - great design is transformative. Thank you for watching and sending healing thoughts!
this was truly a lovely family home. Loved the kitchen floors and all of the stencilling and the fabric on the walls. The property was gorgeous.
Agreed!
Awesome. How many times will you watch this again. Several times?
Yes absolutely!!!! Editing is boring!!! I completely agree with you!!! Only in art galleries ! We all need to feel cozy and comfortable in the environment that is part of our own creation and bring us joy. Your home is absolutely gorgeous!
Exactly!!
Loved EVERYTHING!
Well! Another wonderful fantasy to aspire to! Deep pockets, vision, talent!
Once again, thank you Stacey and Susanna for brightening my morning coffee with another At Home video. 💙🦋💙
I had my morning coffee watching too cinnamon and vanilla coffee as a matter of fact😊 this channel takes my stress away 😁🙏🏿😁
Our pleasure!! Thank you for tagging along!
@@tiffanycurtis4794 Thank you - love hearing that!
Who wouldn’t love a wholesome property like this? I wish I could live like this.
All I can say is “WOW”‼️
We love that reaction! 👍🏻🙏🏻
Now this is living! How lovely! Thank you for the tour and your shoes match the rug. 😘
Nice video 👍
I agree with the other comments. This is a real house with and for real people. Absolutely love it. Amazingly beautiful home.
So glad you loved!

Love the Proprietair , love the surroundings, flabbergasted with the elegance of the interiors ! Fantastic good taste 🙏🥰
Agreed! Glad you enjoyed!
I enjoy watching every episode. I always looking forward for the next one.
Thanks so much!!
Beautiful home, so comfy
love the video ..what I love about your videos are they are really homes that people live in with all there "stuff" not cookie cutter houses that are white ,grey and brown ..
Thank you! We love homes that reflect their owners!
It's like heaven on earth. Beautiful home, beautiful property, and beautiful decor. Thanks for sharing another great video. I always look forward to these, and get inspired.
Great addition to your opening video. This home is wonderful. Earns a hundred percent on comfort level and style. Love the addition of bees and chickens. My respects!
So glad you enjoyed!
This is luxury to me.
Layered decor, bees, horses, a daughter named Bunny…
There was also the low key elegance of generational wealth.
Glad you enjoyed!!
I haven’t commented in along time, but what a wonderfully purposely beautifully decorated home. I loved every room.
So glad you loved! Thanks for chiming in again!
Good grief!! Sooo many wonderful ideas to “steal”!!!❤️
Totally agree!
Another gem. A farm, a retreat, a piece of art. I am in love.....
Love your videos. How great is design for mind ,body, and soul.
Thank you for that - we of course agree!
How true!
Thank you for bringing all this to us, couldn't stop feeling and seeing this wonderful life styles.
@@xiomiminer Our pleasure!!
The PATTERN on the KITCHEN FLOOR is the same we have here in our beautiful COPACABANA STROLL Beach, redesigned by the great BURLE MARX in the 70's, representing the Sea 🌊 WAVES and it has become an iconic design, known all around the WORLD 🌎...I could never imagine it on a kitchen floor in a MILLBROOK FARM HOUSE, and...it's just FANTASTIC !! BRAVO 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Agreed - it looks amazing!! And Darren's inspiration (as well as Marx's) were the historic cobblestone squares in Lisbon!
Always a treat!!!🥰
What I love is even with your eyes closed, you can tell the age of the home and picture what it looks like on the inside just from the sound of them walking on the wood floor. It sounds like an old New England home. I wish there were homes like this where I live in Maryland.
Lovely observation - thanks for watching.
Enchanting. Lovely, lovely home.
This is my favorite tour you have done so far! This home and property is amazing. Beautifully decorated, love it all
So glad you loved!!
Delightful…..grateful that you shared your home.
We are too! Glad you enjoyed!
Every time I think this series cannot get any better...SURPRISE!!
A beautiful home, thanks for taking us along.
Our pleasure!!
Don't you just love Milkbrook? Love the Hudson Valley. I'm originally from there and just love the history and the beautiful old homes.
Yes, a beautiful area!
Absolute heaven!
I love this house because he knows when to stop shopping.
Wha a lovely home! Especially, outdoors..Susanna is great. I did enjoy this visit.
Am I supposed to be paying attention to a Zoom meeting? Yes. Am I watching this instead? Also, yes. Another beautiful video! Thanks :)
LOL thank you!!
Wow...another scrumptious house tour! This is my dream home and property. Very beautiful....thank you!
Our pleasure!
Darren needs his own show and label
Totally can see him in City and country living so adaptable/ saw both his homes enjoyed both soooo much 🥰👌!
👍🏻🙏🏻
Absolutely amazing property! Beautifully done but still appears to be a livable family home. I always look forward to your tours.
Exactly!! And thank you!
Super
Wow! What a property! I wouldn’t to leave it either! Good to see. The kitchen floor reminded me of Portugal.
👍🏻
@@quintessenceblg If I am not mistaken, he credits as inspiration the design of the pavement in the Rossio square in Lisbon.
@@itinerantmendicant Not sure about that specific square but yes, he has said he was inspired by the cobblestone patterns of the squares in Lisbon!
@@quintessenceblg Et voila madame!

@@itinerantmendicant Exactement!! Thank you!
Enchanting...
What a beautiful home to raise children in.
I SO agree.
The floor, your shoes matching the rug, and using multiple whites-- LOVE it! Regards from Indiana!
So glad you enjoyed!! Thank you!
Once again, I'm seriously jealous of Susanna and Stacey - I'd love to visit there too! Another wonderful excursion into the world of beautiful and tasteful design with my favorite UA-cam channel!!
Thanks so much!! So glad you enjoy our channel!
This home is stunning!!
I wouldn’t leave either! What a fabulous place.
Beautiful home, just love it. The design in the kitchen floor reminds me of the Copacabana beach sidewalks, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The sidewalks there are made with black and white stones in the same pattern as this kitchen floor, they represent the waves in the beach. Wonder if the homeowner got his inspiration from there :)
Yes, exactly!! Good eye! They were both separately inspired by the old cobblestones in the squares in Lisbon.
Gorgeous home. Wonderful property. Best story, the honey and Bunny's allergies.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
