Earthquake Magnitude Power Comparison
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 гру 2017
- In this 5th episode, we compare the power released for the biggest earthquakes, from an everyday 2.0 earthquake, to a 5.0 objects shifting quake, we get a visualization of how powerful certain quakes are.
Each increase in magnitude is 33 times more powerful than the previous one.

Dear viewers, thank you for being so sharp and able to detect a few minor details withing the first 10 minutes or so.
Thus, changes have been made according to the country for the last earthquake and the year of the San Francisco Earthquake. Additionally, the volume at the start is tuned down heavily and the background is modified to give a more stunning visual.
Thanks for the support! Next in the series will be the comparison of a phenomenon that can create tornados, earthquakes, tsunamis & volcanos all together! You are welcome to suggest others!

as a chilean myself i must say: the fact that we don't react as most people expect is obviously related to the frequency in which we have earthquakes, but also to the way buildings have to be made in order to resist sismic activity. The buildings tend to dance around rather than collapse on themselves, that way a 5 or even a 7 won't cause devastation like it would on countries not equiped for earthquakes.
That “not equiped for earthquake” country being Turkey, as we have seen 2 weeks ago.
@@ezrak3949 sadly, yes. I do not know if Turkey is earthquake prone. If it is, then this is nothing but negligence by the construction company and the government that allowed this to fly. If not, then it was inevitable.
@@Defosaur well, it’s both construction company and the government.
@@Defosaur yes turkey is earthquake prone, its between a fault and right at the point where the african arabic and eurasian plates meet.
As a Mexican, I'm jealous of your Chilean construction standars. The last time there was an earthquake in Mexico City an elementary school collapsed.

Very well thought out presentation. Moving previous diagram using the lower left corner as tangents to the circle. Seeing the exponential increase of the Richter scale is so helpful. Nice touch using recent historical events to tie news to the scale. Very well done!
As a Japanese, I'm sad to see what happened back in 2011. I experienced a big earthquake and tsunami, it was not the Fukushima aftershock.
What about the 1923 earthquake?
As a gaijin who has been living in Sendai, I also experienced the 2011 Earthquake. The worst part is I was still an elementary school student and the trauma is still there. The tsunami just bounced back the nearest highway, so we were all safe. I can’t believe I had experienced the 3rd biggest Earthquake of all time.

I've seen a lot of Chile related comments, but something that I felt left out in the video, was the 8.8 earthquake registered in Chile the 27 of February of 2010. Still important
same, I was waiting for that one
And that's was huge. This is what I had to explain to an Ecuatorian friend when we were shaken by the September 2015 earthquake. She was terrified and asked how much worse was that one from February 2010. All what I said it was far worse than this one, probably more than fifty times in shaking violence. She was amazed.
I experienced that earthquake. Was terrifying and the longest night of my life!! 😭 But nothing really happened in my neighborhood, all houses were intact, whereas, on the north side of my town, a tsunami destroyed a big chunk of the coastline 💔
Earthquakes in Chile are highly overrated, they must feel superior because of such nonsense Chileans, cringe.
I was also waiting for that one! It was my first strong earthquake, it was a total nightmare, I swore my house was going to collapse! Then we didn't have water and electricity for WEEKS, so I couldn't even get info on what had actually happened until I walked by a taxi that had the radio on. That's when I finally came to know what had happened to my country. It was devastating.

@@sjsjsjsj2290 Just seen this on the news "New 6.4 magnitude earthquake strikes southern Turkey" are you still alive man?
@@treasuretrailshell yeah that 6.4 was crazy I thought I will die
This is always the problem with the Mercalli scale (the one portrayed here, although the video-makers "forgot" to mention in favour of creating impact), that such scale is quite inaccurate as ir refers to "how people" perceive the earthquake, no how strong it really was in terms of the energy released, as does the Richter scale (the figure we always come to know after an earthquake takes place), and that's why Mercalli's scale has since long been forgotten in favour of Richter's one (which though having some aspects to refine, such as it specifies the energy released at the epicenter, not in the cities it affects and the phenomena of subsidence, liquefaction, resonance, etc that greatly change the final outcome in the affected city) it provides a better understanding on how powerful it was. Thanks for the video.
Did you know that here, at Chile, every construction must be resistent up to 9 Richter by law

9 Mw (moment magnitude, the most used scale nowadays). The Richter scale is not accurate for earthquakes bigger than magnitude 6. Every time we read or watch on TV earthquake magnitude xx Richter what they actually mean is Mw.
I live in Indonesia and wonder why we don't do this
designing and building a structure that can withstand a magnitude 9 earthquake is very, very expensive

Sadly there is another earthquake happening in both countries Türkiye and Syria, (magnitude of 7.8), affecting northern Lebanon too (magnitude of 5.6) Luckily Lebanon has no fatalities, only injuries, but the damage was moderate. But Syria and Türkiye, I mean my thoughts and prayers goes to them.

4:14 lava tsunamis? Haha, no thanks.
I haven't taken a shower for 7 weeks, but because it’s a big meteor destroyed the earth so it make lava tsunamis
Minecraft Gamer de l’Assomption it didn’t destroy the earth but it caused massive damage to it, The crater left behind by the chixulub impact is the 2nd largest confirmed impact crater on earth
