He had wisdom before (feeding the lizard/dragon, recognizing the dragon was the lizard, keeping it safe, knowing what he wanted was different from his father's wish). His wish was for his father's acceptance as is. His father's demeanor changed when he said he will be alright.

@@attyjade I can see that now. Thank you. At least that unnamed wish granting Dragoness to an extent (Though not completely unreasonable, nor completely heartlesss) was kind and merciful enough to let the Boy and his Father leave her forest peacefully without having to kill them, because the Boy was kind enough to share his food with her. Wise decision. Let's hope the next Dragon they meet is much nicer, friendlier, and less willing to harm people?

It's a rite of passage story, but it's not the boy who makes the passage, but the father. He goes from "We should go back (because I'm hurt and can't finish the journey)." through "take this .... (and be careful)." to "I only wanted the best for you." to "You're pretty wise for someone your age". The boy/young man (he's about 13) goes from protected child to trusted child to independent child/son to independent and loved man/son. Beautiful.

At 8:28 minutes, the boy says, " I didn't need the magic". He even marks it with a stutter. This means that he didn't make a wish. He is not 'bothered' by what his father saw as a handicap and he doesn't want any magic to fix anything in his personality. He accepts all the positives and negatives in himself. That's why he is wise and that's why he is going to be "alright"(on 8:40 minutes).

Yes this is a story about the father learning he has to accept his son how he is.

Great job in any case! I really like the overall tone. I think maybe my favorite moment is when the father goes one way, and the boy goes the other, calls to his father, and says, "This way!" And the father trusts his son's intuition.

@@jamescunningham2035 while it was pretty clear that it was a story about acceptance the actual goal of the protagonists never became clear for me before I read VaVa Chess´s comment.
They want to have a dragonscale to "fix the voice" of the son. But why? The problem is not ambiguity, it is that the (stutter-)problem is not presented clear enough for most viewers. The boy simply doesnt speak enough that the stutter can be percieved clearly. While I love the narrating style as such (father and son dont need many words), the narrative needs one key scene in which the problem presents itself. The one and only scene the viewer has to get the key information from as it is now is when the boy says two times "I could" and the father has to finish the sentence That is not much to go by. Especially when it can be easily explained by simple fear. The "I, I will be back before nightfall" I only recognized after playing the scene multiple times, after I knew what to listen for.

Depends on where you are from. There was a sect of dragons that were never seen as good to humanity because of how cruel they were.
Unfortunate, because fear spreads like wildfire. Many were good, few were evil. But like an online troll, the bad always garners far more attention than good.

    • @chrisrudolf9839
      @chrisrudolf9839 2 роки тому

There is not one single kind of "original" dragons, since tales of dragons exist in many different cultures and in very different varieties. Dragons as symbols of wisdom and luck seem to derive more from chinese and japanese mythology. The European representations in the oldest known sources are usually greedy and vicious, like the firedragon in the Beowulf saga or the dragon Fafneer in the Völsungen Saga and its "prequel" in the Edda, who is basically a human demigod who turned into a dragon because of his greed, jealousy and obsession with guarding his treasures.

    • @danpeterson114

@@pencilartguy3258 Believe it or not, if you do the research you will see that there were once many "good" dragon deities in Western culture as well, though "modern" Christianity has rewritten their own holy scriptures to change that. For example, the highest heavenly creatures in both Judasim and Christianity were called the Seraphim, and when both the ancient Jewish and Christian theologians translated the ancient Hebrew texts into Greek, they called the Seraphim "Drakons" which are dragons! The Bible even describes Yahweh (God) has a huge, shining creature with enormous wings that breathed fire from his mouth, and smoke from his nostrils, and demanded offerings of sheep, goats and cattle on a daily basis. He even controlled the weather and caused great floods when he was angry -- EXACTLY like Chinese and Japanese dragons! Moses was even ordered to build an idol of him in the form of a shining fiery flying serpent, and it was worshipped in Solomon's temple after it was built. This is all in the Bible, but they'll never tell you this stuff in Sunday School!

    • @pencilartguy3258

@@danpeterson114 I am aware Western influences antagonized the Dragon, especially in the Book of Genesis and Revelation which depicted Satan as such.
However, there are a few things you got wrong. God doesn't have the appearance of a dragon. This is evidenced where God creates Adam in His Image. And the Bronze Serpent was not an idol, nor was it worshipped. It was held up against Moses's staff to form the shape of a Cross. The Israelites simply looked at it to be healed from the bites the seraphs inflicted upon them after they grumbled against God.

This is a good one, I especially loved the way the dragon found the kid, made the trees hold back his father, so it could play with the child, malevolence and harsh aggression is not always a dragon's way, many were quite friendly and mischeivious so long as you were not a warrior or a killer. You can tell the dragon is forced to grant the kid's wish, because of the reaction a little puffiness instead of just eating the kid, if the dragon eats the kid a whole village or army might come and bother it.

I understood it that the boy got his fathers wish indirectly when the boy said to his father about his voice that, “It doesn’t bother me.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that as good as fixed in the father’s eyes? In his heart, he only wants what’s best for the boy. What was fixed was the boys vanity, if he had any, and a very healthy sense of self. A high self esteem covers his voice, and as he hits puberty, it covers how long and lanky he’s about to get, or acne, or whatever causes young adults to become self conscious.. The boy has gotten whatever comes “fixed” in how he feels about himself. His father is happier and prouder than if the boys voice had been changed. I don’t know if that was his wish or not, but the dragon is both kind and wise. Good dragon!

    1) I didn't know the boy was stuttering until I read it in the comments.
    2) the resolution to the question from the dragon was unclear.
Did he wish? He had to or die and what was his wish... you the viewer have to guess.
    3) Good effects good lighting.. I would have tossed in a little more color grading.
    4) I had to turn on the comments to understand the dialog line. "Either they are worthy"
I heard it as "I they are worthy"
    5) I have no issue with sending off a kid to his doom.. this is the magic middle ages.
kids are there to do work and nothing more.

He couldn't wish for his father to walk again? Sheesh, the best wish is one you wish for another. That would be a powerful lesson.

My main criticism for this fantastic short film is that their costumes are cleaner than their faces. It makes it look like a costume rather than being actual lived in clothes. It feels like they started existing right before the camera said action. Doesn’t ruin the film by any means. They do a ton right. Just something to think about for anyone out there looking to make a short film or something. If your characters are dirty then their clothes should be dirty too.

A wonderfully crafted artistic piece with a message of importance to fathers and their sons, a message missing in family structures where the father is omitted. A message a mother cannot give a boy. Watch the movie before you read further........
The boys wish was simple....... he wished for his father's approval ........... (underlying)..... and he's father's appreciation of all that he is..... and not just acceptance of his shortcomings....
This is a major step in a boy's life of becoming a good man.

Totally used to this channel only having animated clips.
This was very well done. Only thing that bothered me was the dad leaning on that short spear while favoring his sore ankle. Toppling over onto it would send Jr back to ask for another wish.
Nice costumes, great interactions with the little gecko.
I wonder what was wrong with the kid's voice? 🤔
Was he supposed to sound like James Earl Jones? 😉
