  • James attempts to shoot his Bowtech SR350 compound bow and arrow with deer crossing archery carbon arrows. One set of three has Q2i vanes and the other set of three is bare shaft, the results are very surprising!

Bare shaft tail dropping (gravity) then aerodynamic lift gets generated because of the angle (hence the high hit) as for the right... Could it be because of right helical rotation on the shaft imparted by the string?

Try bare shafts indoor. Use electrical tape to mimic the weight of the vanes so arrow weights the same. In theory they should group together with a well tuned bow. High right would be a low left tear.

      @savelinkralev4204 9 місяців тому

Completely disagree that a bare shaft and a fleshed shaft have to group together even if you add some electrical tape to be the same weight.

@@mackstrate6235 you lose speed due to the drag. The arrow with the electrical tape has less surface to drag. For example, an arrow with straight vanes will lose less speed compared to an arrow with 2 degree vanes. The arrow without vanes will keep the speed better than the arrow with 2 degree vanes even though they have the same weight. You will not see any difference in 20 yards, the difference will become visible on longer distances. There is a formula how for calculating drag and it is based on the area of the object facing the fluid in our case air. If you have a hooter shooter you can fletch some arrows with straight vanes and some 3-4 degree vanes and shoot to 70 - 100 yards and you will see the difference in groping.

@@savelinkralev4204 No doubt. There's a reason we use veins. But like you said at 20, there should be minimal difference between the 2. As you stretch the distance a lot more factors come into play.

Given the wind, I would redo that on a calm day. That being said at 40 yds and the results you are seeing, I’d micro adjust the rest 1/32-1/16 right and about the same down. If that didn’t make it so the impacts are the same(field pts and bareshafts together), I’d move the cams Left, which should translate to lean the cams right (if you adjust with yokes, it’s been awhile on cam leaning )and lower the rest. Do that and fixed blades will fly fine with field points typically. Oh this also has to be done on a well setup bow(timed correctly, nock point set up square to string)
Bareshaft is not the be all end all for tuning, it’s a starting point, just like paper tuning. Speaking of paper tuning you would likely with have a low left tear(minor with fletched arrows).
Problem with paper tuning is your trying to tune arrows/bow at 3-5yds from the bow, which doesn’t always work, and issue with bareshaft is your mimicing fixed blade broadhead flight, which doesn’t always mean you have a perfect paper tear. The Intent is to get the arrow in both cases to leave the bow clean.
What I do now with my bows is tune the bow and set everything to ctr shot. Then I go shoot the bow and get it sighted in and a sight tape setup. Then I go to bareshaft tuning at 10,20,40,60 yds). Usually I if I get bareshafts at 40yds in a tight group, my broadhead flight is good out to 80yds with my field points.
I always have a bareshaft in my quiver or with me it’s how I check my bow for tune or if I am off on form.
The weight in the back of the bareshaft, ideally should be the same. In learned that at 20-30yds it doesn’t make much of a difference in my experience, so I don’t bother wrapping with tape/etc.

I recently moved from a AAE max stealth to a Bohning X-vane 2.25 with very good results, however my entire arrow setup changed as well. I'll be sticking with lighter and lower profile vanes for 3D archery from now on. I'll be getting orders to socal soon and I'd love to shoot with you guys some time.

If the bow is tuned correctly, bare shafts should hit with the fletched arrows, even at 40 yards, similar to fixed broadhead will hit with fieldpoints. I think the wind messed with your test, but you may need to move your rest down and to the right a click or two (if that's not the wind). Then once the bare shafts and fletched are grouping together, recenter your sight to the left and both fletched and bare shaft will hit together, and your bow will be perfectly tuned unless you're torquing the bow

I shoot bare shafts when tuning the bow. I take a fletched arrow and cut off the vane leaving the foot of the fletch. In my experience fixed blade broadheads will group where your bare shafts group.

You mean you don’t bare shaft and nock tune in increments of 10 yards from 250 yards?😂 And you call yourself an archer😢 Also, if you can’t shoot in 100 mph crosswind, you might as well take up bowling. 🎳 Extreme TAC on the planet Mars is only a couple years away. Better train!

Try it with different weight feildpoints. Start at 100gr and go up to like 300gr and see if front weight does anything. I'd give it a try but I only have 22yards in my backyard and don't think at that distance anything really matters lol.
Also you should check speed and see if vanes affect speed, nm people might start shooting no vanes with broadheads for that few extra fps lol

It is not difficult to set up a bow to shoot a bareshaft with 30m slightly worse than arrows with feathers, and then the twisting of the bow already affects and you need to play with it. The best archers can shoot bareshaft from 60 yards (Paige Pierce) and even from 60 meters (one unnamed archer)

All my arrows used to be fletched with Bohning Miini-Blazers, and they shot great. With a tuned bow and spine-aligned arrows, they steered my fixed blade broadheads unerringly out to 50 yards. Bohning discontinued the Mini-Blazers, but they made up for that by putting out the HEAT vanes. As far as wind goes, I like the .204 diameter shafts as they are less affected by wind.

Arrow pitches or pivots at its centre of gravity.
Try putting two vanes on angled the opposite way.
Try and figure out how to get the arrow to turn.
Imagine the buck of your life is behind a large tree and you need to curve the arrow around the tree to get it in the pump station.

My guess is bare shafts look like they’re rising because they don’t drop like a fletched arrow would thanks to the reduced drag. Of course it could also be an illusion caused by a rising nock since that’s all you can really see is the nock or even a combination of the two
