And I want this information to be free for everyone. Some compensation for my efforts comes from the publicity which you see appearing occasionally. I hope you don't find it too annoying.
Until now I received the most nice and grateful reactions from all over the world.
And that gives me a lot of satisfaction.

It’s not cheating. It’s using all the tools available to achieve the final painting. Bravo! Excellent!
I have the same opinion
@@lustenhouwer we were taught in the beginning of art school … no tools until you went through the drawing and illustrating processes. Then we were allowed to use all the tools.
The same thing recently happened to me. I was painting my sister from a photo, and her mouth looked tight; the lips pursed in my painting, but not in the photo. I had to sit back and think about it for 4 or 5 days. I finally adjusted the shadows, making the top lip lighter, and it made them relaxed and supple again. Glad to know I'm not the only one who has this problem. I love your work, and you are my guide. I still use the method that you taught of mixing reds and greens to make skin tones.
You know what I did sometimes? When the portrait I am painting looks tight or stiff I try to imitate with my own face the feeling of the painted face.
I go to the mirror and look what happens with my face. Sometimes it is in the eyebrows and the wrinkle that goes up in-between. Sometimes the eyes squint. But mostly the mouth.
This is great to see. Painting portraits is so difficult at times to get it just right and it's nice to see another technique. Thank you.
you are welcome
I was taught something similar about letting a painting rest. Sometimes your brain becomes overwhelmed and needs some time out, so you have to let a painting rest overnight, or even a couple of days to come back with a fresh view.
Thank you for this brief tip!
Exactly!
Glad to having you back Sir Ben! Its always nice to see you, and learn something from your point of view!
I send you my best regards and a strong handshake! Celeda from Argentina.
Thank you
I saw some of your videos and they are really good and interesting, and after watching them, I made a portrait of my son for his fifth birthday, I don't do portraits, but you are the one who pushed me to stop for a moment from the work I am busy with in the studio, and experiment in an area that I don't usually touch in artistic practice , thanks, and looking forward to seeing your new videos {it's been two months since your last post} (-:
So nice to hear. Thank you. Next week I hope to launch my next video.
Absolutely love your tutorials! You are such an inspiration. Thank you!
Thank you Rach.

Well yes, that is absolutely the way to spot every error! And that is not cheating. I use whatever tool I can, but not always follow photos blindly, and go in such a depth to copy it as their are prone to error for the different focal lengths, but that's another story. However, one must know that J. S. Sargent said what he said, because many of his clients have asked of him to paint "the mouth" the way he painted them (smaller, more delicate, in one word as beautiful as can be) and the way we see them know on his finished paintings, and that not always reflected what he indeed had seen before him. He was also a "Master Flatterer" in his portraits done for the upper class. Those portraits loose not iota of their value, I adore them nonetheless! Without a doubt, where he is absolutely sincere are his self portraits. The other portraits are somewhat idealized, simplified, rid of all that is "ugly" on the face or sometimes indeed realistic. He manipulated reality in a way Velazquez did, yet Velazquez was more sincere in my opinion even with the Monarch he painted so very often!
Both Sargent as Velazquez were draftsmen of dizzying heights.
WOW What a wonderful portrait, using colours are amazing, Congratulations, Greetings, 💜🌹
Thank you
Fantastic, thank you for this channel❤
you are welcome
Thank you, Grandpa Artist, I love you so much.
Haha. Thank you.
Your painting is happier in the eyes than the photo and I just started the video but seems like the mouth might be too delicate in the painting. We edit so much to reflect our preferences.
Nothing wrong with
Yo también uso Photoshop para contrastar líneas entre ojos y labios. Gracias por tu aporte 👏👏

Thank you so much
You are welcome Elena
Nicely explained... except the question now becomes, why not simply start with an overlay of the photo from the start of the painting? Seems like that would have saved a lot of time and agony of trying to figure out what was wrong.
Even then...

Thank you, Ben, for sharing your experience. Have you considered creating a pdf with less compression? Document size is no longer an issue these days.
Maybe a good idea. but also a lot of work...
@@lustenhouwer it shouldn't require a lot of work while the original publication is ready, it's just related to printing settings when you output the file
Very nice 👍
thank you
Brilliant!

I'd love to see you talk about the portrait of the girl in the drafting chair to the right of your easel.
That is a portrait of twenty years ago. A friend of mine was posing.
@@lustenhouwer It's a fun portrait. It grabs and holds your attention.
Excellent sir 👏

Can you make a video about how to paint clothes and drapery?
Maybe one day
WOW
painting a human face is the biggest challenge. I paint any kind of landscape, but I have a lot of trouble with portraits
Keep painting. Practice makes perfect
good to now
Thank you, I follow you from Saudi Arabia🤍🙏🏼
Thank you Zahrah. Is the subtitling in Arab correct?
Every time I see your video I feel guilty about how complacent I am, with all the mistakes I see in my portraits.
Don´t worry as long as you keep trying!
I use a lot of technology to make my paintings, it makes the task much easier, I enjoy more and I worry less, I even use a lot of AI (artificial intelligence) to create paintings, that "cheating" does not exist, tracing paper has existed for many years... 🤫
Indeed!
