  • Break out the Steaks, its time to see if there is a clear winner, Traeger or Oklahoma Joe? I've done Traeger vs Weber steaks before, but now its time for the pellets smokers to have a go!

    Great videos.. I just bought a Oklahoma joe deluxe because of its sear option.. would you recommend adding a smoke tube in the Joe to add more smoke flavor?? ....thank you sir.👍🏽

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому +1

      I’ve heard from a lot of people that they add smoke tubes for added flavor. It’s a little strange to think you need a smoke tube on a smoker, but I’ve only heard positive reviews?

    Is it possible to adjust the chimney stacks on the Joe so the heat wouldn't rise so bad? Love watching videos. Gonna make a purchase very soon and I'm stuck between these 2 and a pit boss sportsman 820.

      Heard from a lot of people that they called OK Joe customer service and got a new control panel, and that has really gotten it within 10-15 degrees. Glad you like them, I’m hopping to get a Pork Rib comparison done Friday before the weekend rain.

    Are the stacks adjustable on the ok joe? If so does that help with high temp problems. I've seen a couple reviews and neither ran that hot

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому

      Stacks adjust, i've seen a couple videos play with them. I've talked to handful of other youtubers that have it, they have all had the same issue. Everyone still loves the smoker, you just have to account that you may have a big temp swing.

    I keep seeing people mention that the OKJ runs hotter but no one seems to realize that it’s because their probe is right over the direct heat source. I’m in the process of watching reviews on the OKJs and I’d love to see someone figure out a way to either deflect the heat or at the very least take a truer ambient temp from the area to either side of the heat. And it seems that the second gen OKJs address the temp variance by adding a second sensor. In addition to the one near the heat zone, they also have one to the side.
    Also I wonder if you could hold a much better smoking temp like 250, if you set the dial to 200 to compensate for the variance. Theoretically you wouldn’t have to worry about moving your protein to a side and could just continue to smoke over the center.

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  Рік тому

      Thats a really good point. With regards to the running at the lower temp, this does really pump out a good bit of smoke. Its always 3 times the amount vs the traeger.

    Great video. The Joe steak was obviously better with the sear, hands down. Yet, the biggest issue your bringing up is, how high the temp gets on the joe. I like your comparison, lots of info. 👍🏼

    • @ComparisonCooking

      I really really wanted to lower the heat on the joe, to try and get more smoke rolling. However, i wanted to show people what's going to happen when they hit the dial onto a certain temperature! Thanks for watching Nicholas!

    Great comparison! I was thinking that would be the outcome, just from the research I did before I got my pellet grill. Mike does not have the option you have with the OK Joe, but I am working on getting a great sear with my pellet! Video to come later, probably Sept. Cheers!

    Would the Okie steak have more smoke if it was placed on the side instead in the middle? Wouldn't that also slow down the cook time? I am just learning about my Oklahoma joe..thanks

    If you’re doing a reverse sear. After you get the steak temp to where you want couldn’t you crank the heat on traegaer and put a cast iron pan in there to heat up and then get a nicer sear? Maybe?

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  2 роки тому

      That’s definitely an option, I would think people probably don’t do that because they don’t want another thing to clean. But sounds like a good plan.

    Figured that would be the outcome. Other interesting thing about the OK Joe are those funky grill marks. :) It really is an unusual cooker, runs extremely hot for me, but the body seems built solid. Have a great one brother!

    • @ComparisonCooking

      The real question, is how low have you been able to get the temp down? And have you ever been able to get a deep smoke rolling on it? As always, thanks for stopping by Charley!

  • @dannytwok1
    @dannytwok1 3 роки тому +1

    Thanks for the video. Could it be that because of the better sear on the OJ, that it overpowers any smoke flavor the steak would have had? And that is why you don't taste as much smoke on it.

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому +1

      Normally the sear won’t dissipate the smoke flavor that much. It wasn’t until I set the Ok Joe on the lowest setting that the smoke really started pumping out of it.

  • @YourNextCast
    @YourNextCast 3 роки тому +1

    I lean to the OK Joe. It looks better to me and like you say, that crisp is a key for me, even if it doesn't have as much smoke flavor. That grill is dynamite too. Love how those flames came through.

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому

      That is a crazy big flame for sure, pretty cool grill. The tech on Traeger, helps make up for the lack of sear. I’m a blessed man, to have this opportunity!

  • @txfieros
    @txfieros 3 роки тому +1

    I’m guessing to get a better idea of the smoke on the Ok joe the heat would have had to dial down to where both your probes were the same. Pellet grills usually make better smoke at lower temps. If you know your particular grill runs hot or low, you can always compensate down. Great comparison.

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому +2

      I was going back and forth on whether to lower the ok joe, but ultimately decided on just keeping both grills on the “factory” 225F. I do plan on doing some cooks where I really lower the temp to see if I can get that deep smoker rolling from the pellets!

    • @ComparisonCooking

  • @davidhunter5367

    If you want the smoke flavour on the Oklahoma Joe you could probably go low heat for a bit before you sear. I’ve been looking for a pellet grill forever that can sear a steak with a flame. I’ve been toying with GMG but the sales reps could never really answer me about a sear on a steak. I can see why now. Sold on the Oklahoma Joe. Love that open pit option

    • @ComparisonCooking

    Great video. Steaks look amazing. Question though. Don't you think Oklahoma Joe should get their temps more accurate than what they are? If I want 225, I don't want 280 to 300. Thoughts.

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому +1

      I think they should get a lot more accurate! I don't want to cook with that much variance. This is their first go at a pellet smoker so I am not surprised there are some bugs. I will try and do a burn soon, just to see how low i can get the temp and how much smoke I can get rolling. Thank you for watching, commenting and subscribing!

    Why would you ever revers sear? Why loose all that juice? I don’t understand the benefit of reverse searing.

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому

      How thick are the steaks you are cooking? When I used to get 1 inch cuts, there was no reason to do a reverse sear. Once o started getting 2inch + steaks, to get the inside cooked without burning the outside, other methods need to be implemented like reverse sear, or sear then bring up to temp in indirect heat. With reverse sear you don’t lose juice and you can add some smoke element to your steaks.

    just a thought on the sear. Could you put a Lodge cast iron skillet in the Traeger and preheat it up while the steak is cooking, then put the steak on the Lodge skillet to sear?

    • @ComparisonCooking
      @ComparisonCooking  3 роки тому +1

      That could definitely be a way to do it. I also have a propane stand for a turkey deep fryer, i'll sometimes throw a cast iron on that to get it scorching hot, and save my pellets for the next low smoke. Lots of different ways you can do it.

    • @ComparisonCooking

      I would say its a 50 /50 shot of if its going to sear well. I've just kinda of resigned to the fact that its going to be what it is. It has a great flavor, just no pretty grill marks. A lot of my friends are starting to stop trying to get grill marks, they don't think it adds anything and prefer just the flavor profiles.
