Interesting how a lot of younger people characterize Chris' reaction as being "thrown off" or "fell apart" and older people characterize it as he" held it together" and "kept it moving". I'm older. It was amazing self control and under the circumstances a commendable bounce back.

Most young people have never been in an altercation, let alone been slapped in front of a crowd. It's sad times when comedians get assaulted for doing comedy
I think it took him a moment, and I think that's fine. That was a lot to process. Once violence starts, it's not immediately clear how it's going to end, and the audience was huge, nobody did anything (such as removing Smith), and Smith was still angry and shouting when he returned to his seat.
So whether it was a just adrenaline, or just him waiting to see if the producers / security were going to do anything, or maybe there was a note on the prompter saying the broadcast had gone to music, or a combination, there was a pause. That doesn't mean Rock didn't carry on, smoothing out the transition back to show. I think it's fine to say he was momentarily "thrown" (wouldn't most of us be?) but he also absolutely "held it together".

My level of respect and admiration for Chris Rock just went 1000 fold!! The way he continued without skipping a beat, showed such professionalism. Will Smith not so much. Now comes the awkward moment where Will has to apologize, and he might even do it in some cowardly way via a tweet. This incident tells more about Chris's professionalism and character, than Will’s. The Academy should do and say something, but they're not. This was an embarrassment.
And let's not get it twisted, all this morning I'm hearing on the news that it was a joke that didn't sit well with Will. Bullshit! Will was perfectly fine with the joke, he was laughing along with everyone else. It was Jada that didn't like it, ( video dont lie ) and because of that, Will was cornered or forced however you wanna word it, he was forced to do something. Completely overdid it, I'm guessing he really wanted to show Jada that he would defend her. Something tells me that, something's off in that marriage, that Will had to go to that extent to prove something to Jada.

Even though Will is the one that assaulted Chris on national TV, he is taking the blame for inciting the assault. because the person who truly should be apologizing is Jada. she's the one that pretty much told will to do something about it. because the actual fact is that will had absolutely no issues with the joke, he was laughing along with everyone else ( video don't lie ) Jada was the only one in the entire audience that didn't like the joke. She is made out to be the victim here, but in reality she is the cause of this whole incident.
As for the joke, the joke wasn't really funny and it was outdated and irrelevant. A funnier joke would have been Chris saying something along the lines of “hey Jada I can't wait to see you in Black Panther 2” and Chris pretending to hold a spear. Now that would have been hilarious!

If you pay close attention to the fraction of a second after the slap,it looked like he was about to react but pulled back and carried on with the show.
