At about 47:00 minutes into the video, Dr Umar speaks about relinquishing our culture to others. I have been saying this about Jazz since the 1990's. Junion jazz musicians apprenticeshiped with Masters on the bandstand. However, with the rapid closing of clubs and radio stations program directors phasing out jazz hours for the latest 90's music, the left jazz in limbo, but the dominant society had a plan.
With the Masters dying off or going into semi retirement, a music school became the new bandstand. One school in particular offered a full course in jazz from composition to proficiency on their instruments. The issue I have is that these schools are producing musicians who are not distinguishable.
In my day, I was told "kid, you've got to get your own sound." I loved Lee Morgan, I put that pop into my Trumpet like Lee, but it wasn't my sound. Nah the issue is though, when you champion yourself the spokeperson for a certain group or ideology AND at the same time calling yourself prince and making bold claims then your personal life and choices will be contrasted with the words you speak.
