I didn't appreciate the Mig-15-19 lineage until I saw the Heavy Metal demo team perform with this Mig-17 in Lancaster, PA a few years ago. This in an amazing cold war fighter! My heart flutters whenever I see a video of it. Such beauty and power!
The MiG-17 held its own against super-sonic US fighters in Vietnam. Got a number of kills against T-105s Thunderchiefs, F4 Phantoms and Corsairs. It was more maneuverable than these faster planes and got the kills sub-sonic with guns.

this was some good footage. love both of these planes so much. modern jets may be vastly more powerful with huge strides in technology, but you cant beat the sophisticated look of korean war era jets
In Vietnam the pilots in the north actually preferred the Mig 17 over the Mig 19 and the slash and dash speed of the Mig 21 with their Atolls. That says alot about its dogfighting capabilities. We had are hands full with that enemy jet for sure. Even the F100 , Thuds and F4 Phantom had to have their head on a swivel and watch out for those pesky 17s.
And about MiG-15. It was the "Black Thursday" for USA: the loudest victory of the russian pilots in Korea. 12-th of April, 1951. 48 MiG-15 against 28 American B-29 bombers under cover of 80 fighters. Just google it. All of our planes returned to the base. Only the couple of MiGs needed to be repaired - technicians just patched holes in their wings. Excuse my terrible English, Sir)

Мой дядя воевал в Корее. Служил зенитчиком. Защищали какой-то мост через реку. Боинги их бомбили. Имел серьезную контузию. Но все таки мост отстояли. Там говорил постоянные бои сейбры с мигами вели. Выпустил маленькую книгу на якутском языке. Якутов там много служило, так как похожи внешне китайцам, корейцам. Форма китайская у них была. В Чите все документы забрали. Погибших хоронили в Порт-Артуре. Наверно Покрышкин летал на таких мигах над ними.

Mandrak789 sabre was a bit earlier than the mig-17 wich was an upgraded version of the mig 15 (the f86,s counterpart) i think the f-86 D or K version would be an equal to the mig-17.

I hate to piss all over your party, but the instructors at TOP GUN and RED FLAG have proved over and again that training and tactics levels the playing field and have made fools of pilots in 30 million dollar high tech aircraft by knowing tactics, energy conservation of their aircraft, and just plain old flying hours. An American instructor at TOP GUN was quoted as saying if he were to go back in time, and fly for the Vietnamese Air Force with his training, he would shoot down a US jet every day every time. That is why such combat schools exist and why all of our Allies come too.
wesley mccurtain I tend to agree mostly, as I said above, 'but it would depend on the pilots in the long run.' But the cost and effectiveness still depends on the aircraft as well. Our pilots are gonna suffer terribly if htey are forced to go into air to air combat wiht the F-35; it gets its ass beat against F-16s. Our guys need more F-22s, though pilot training is the most important consideration. The AVG did pretty well in China with P-40Cs, but they's have done much better with P-51Ds. I pretty much agree with yuo though.

Also, in actual dogfights the MiG generally won this. Quite simply, the MiG-15 was already at an advantage against the F-86 in most ways. The MiG-17 absolutely outclassed it.
@Mars Exulte Smythe has a point. MiG-17 top speed was over 900mph. No F-86 was ever that fast. The F-100 was as fast as the MiG-17 but was much larger and less maneuverable. US Air Force had pilots superior to the Chinese and North Korean dolts it usually faced in Korea, which accounted for they superior kill ratio vis a vis the MiG-15. Experienced Russian pilots at the time were their equal in the MiG-15. In the MiG-17 they would have had total air superiority against the F-86. The US has always compromised itself in that regard by saddling its air superiority fighters with multi-role ambitions and reliance on questionable high tech weaponry. The F-4, a very large and heavy aircraft, was not equipped with a Vulcan cannon for many months during the Viet Nam conflict and relied upon unreliable Sidewinder missiles in dogfights with the MiG17 and MiG-21. I have always felt this cost more than a few F4 crew members their lives. Basically....Soviet and US fighter aircraft of the 50s and 60's are apples and oranges when it comes to comparison.

@@arctifire5709 If memory serves...the first two years the Sabre was a problematic aircraft. I think it was considered a "widow maker" for the first two versions. One of the problems was flame outs I believe. My dad was a Sabre mechanic in the '50s. I remember him telling us of fork lifts pushing new engines, still in their packing crates, off the deck of the carrier in to the Atlantic.

It would have been nice to have had a Mig 15 available for this demonstration, as the Mig 15 was the actual contender to the F-86 during the Korean War. I think the F-86 would have had a time keeping pace with the Mig 17. In any evet, a very nice video.
To be honest it wasn't a dog fight. It would have been really cool to see the real effort of both pilots to get behind each other.

My understanding is both the MiG-15 and the F-86 could go into supersonic dives but only the Sabre could pull out of one, and that there were several instances of a Sabre pilot getting a Fresco pilot to go into one and then the Sabre pilot pulled out and watched Ivan auger in.

In reality the MiG-17 vastly out-performed the F-86 ... a fact that gave the Soviets the unexpected "gift" of gaining ten years' development in air-to-air missile tech: Taiwanese F-86 were modified to be able to launch early Sidewinder missile (AIM-9B) in order to bridge performance gap versus Chinese MiG-17/F-5. However, one failed to detonate... lodging in the fuselage of a MiG that managed to return to base with the missile almost completely intact.

The correct match up would be the MiG-15bis and the F-86E/F as that was how it was in the air war over North Korea. In the very early days of the war the F-86A was quickly sent over there but they were quickly replaced by the F-86E as production ramped up at North American and Canadair. The MiG-17 was not in service quickly enough to be used in Korea.

The latter F86s had afterburner most notably the Canadair mfg ones that West Germany, Britain, and seveta l other NATO nation's flew in 50s early 60s, these later Sabre models could attain speeds in excess of 700 mph, yes the Mig 17 was a later modified Mig 15 with afterburner, both beautiful class jets, the Mig 17 actually gave F4 Phantoms a harder time than the Mig 21 due to its nimbleness and tighter turning radius.

If it was a Soviet trained pilot in that MiG the Sabre pilot would have to earn his money that day...The Koreans and the Chinese didn’t fly the airframe to the envelope like the Soviet pilots did. Pilot training and absolute understanding of what your aircraft can and cannot do makes you victorious.

A MIG-15 is a better match, the 17 has an afterburner the Sabre does not.
It has afterburners, but still can't go supersonic. The F-86 could hit Mach 1 in a drive without the tail breaking off, or it shaking apart unlike the MiG-17. The F-86 is also lighter and turns better. As far as top speed the MiG-17 isn't that much faster at all. This one's up to the pilots in the fight.
You're talking out of your ass, MiG's were known for their insane turning rate at corner speed, the MiG 17 is faster and accelerated better but both had severe risk of structural damage when approaching Mach 1 because those airframes just weren't built to go that fast, the MiG was built more to turn and retain it's energy, the Sabre was built to shoot a2a missiles and do quick in and out dives on their targets(yes the sabres did have a2a missiles, it was called the GAR-8 and scored the first ever a2a missile kill in the history of planes)
@@devildog3246 -The MiG-17 is more manouvreable than the Sabre, that is an undisputed fact. The afterburner in the MiG allowed it to have sudden acceleration which the Sabre did not have. It was only when the F-4 appeared in the Vietnam skies did the US gain air superiority during the Vietnam war. But it was bittersweet because the F-4 only easily outmatched the MiG-17 but it was slightly outmatched by the newer MiG-21. However, luckily the N Vietnamese did not have enough MiG-21s to turn the tide of the air war in the theatre.

The Mig is technologically superior yes, but there are many more factors in a real fight than wing-loading, G rating, ect.. Recall that even a MiG-25 brought down an F-18!

How would using the F-86 with a gun in Vietnam have reduced losses? First, by *far*, the vast majority of US aircraft combat losses were to anti-aircraft fire and SAMs. How are guns going to help us there? Second, most air to air losses were F-100s or F-105's, etc, loaded down with bombs and flying subsonic. Both of these aircraft HAD guns. In fact, the only fighter I can think of in Vietnam that didn't have a gun is the Navy F-4 and early USAF F-4's. Those guns didn't help the F-105's, F-100s, A-4's that got shot down, even those that were shot down by fighters instead of AA fire!
Lastly, I don't see how the answer to the problem our primary air-superiority fighter lacking guns is to send in a 20 year old fighter with worse performance than the slowest enemy fighter. Seriously, a MiG-17 is much more powerful, faster, better climbing, higher ceiling, and has better guns than an F-86, and a MiG-21 even more so! You seriously think it would have REDUCED losses to send the F-86 into Vietnam, just because it had a gun? Remember, most of the aircraft that were shot down DID have guns, and when fighters that had guns shot down the enemy, they almost always chose a missile instead. A gun is a useful thing to have, but it's not the primary weapon, and just having one isn't going to ensure victory...especially when the enemy can walk away at his leisure because your fighter can't keep up with his. He can pick and choose the time of engagement.
@Doc Vega having the f-86 H take on the mig 17s would have been a good idea. 4 20 mm Cannon and sidewinders with well trained pilots would have spanked the mig 17s by beating them at their own game- close in dogfighting..

Well sabre never fougth mig-17s... And mig-15bis was far more superior compared to sabre. Mig didnt do well because pilots were mostly just korean rookies straigth from the basic fligth school with no dogfigth or tactic training. Russian pilots did actually try them selfes these beatiful birds against americans and the russian pilots were well trained with these jets, they proved mig-15 far more superior than F-86
Drugs that's why we had a 10 to 1 or better kill ratio over them. The F 86 was a superior aircraft in just about every aspect. The mig had a more powerful but slower gun. And a height advantage that was negated by the D model of the F86. The mig 17 is the russians answer to that plane.
