The MiG-17 strength is in a turning fight. He would win almost every time. The trick was to not get suckered into a turning fight with him and try to sucker him into a vertical engagement. The knowledge of the opponents strengths and weaknesses is critical to persevering in dogfighting, thus good classroom as well as flight training is key to success and staying alive in air to air combat. The Mikoyan-Gurevich design team fixed everything that was wrong with the MiG-15 when they designed the MiG-17 series, so it was quite a daunting adversary in Vietnam with Russian trained NVAF pilots.

8:21 Great camera work to keep the Mig in frame during the high speed pass. The Mig 17 is definitely challenging to film! I lucked out and got some great footage of Randy Ball in his Mig, thus far my most viewed video!
+southfieldspotter Thanks! Yeah, it is definitely hard to keep the camera centered on a fast moving target and especially with it zoomed in to where the target fills the screen.......the struggle is to video without a lotta shake, but that would require a very well situated mounting grip. Another problem I always encounter at airshows is that the camcorder I use has no eyepiece, so the only visual aid I have is that dinky flip screen and the sun hits it so bright, that I cannot see the jet in the view screen to be able to keep the video on it.........I have lost many good video opportunities because of this. But, soon I will get a more professional camera with an eyepiece so that I can nestle the camera tightly to my eye for stabilization.
I find "delta" wings hideous. They make the cockpit area curve up if they are twin engine, and that looks awful, but this, this is beautiful. I love swept wings.
+AllThingsFlightSim True. These older jet aircraft have a real charm to them, like the F-86, MiG-15/17 and the Hawker Hunter. Beautifully simple looking aircraft, so smooth and shiny...
I know very little about planes or warbirds. I grew up in Beira, Mozambique. Saw many of these fightes during the civil war in the 80's. I cannot forget the intimidating Mig 15/17 sounds and maneuvers. As the war was not the conventional one, I believe the fighters didn't play a major role in war zones. But I miss these spectacular fightes a lot.

It's remarkable how much a thorn in its enemies' sides the MiG-17 managed to be considering that most of its enemies, historically, were better funded nations flying aircraft technological generations ahead at times when the MiG-17 was already decades old.
Is it obligatory that every air show announcer sound like Rod Roddy from the Price is Right and have virtually no knowledge at all of the aircraft he's hyping? The MiG-17 isn't going supersonic because it's not designed to safely do so; that has nothing to do with the airshow regulations about breaking mach 1. You could surely get it past supersonic in a dive from angels 25; would that be a good idea in a 60 year old Soviet warbird?
I know I was at the Vancouver air show and a f16 flew by me at Mach 1.5 did anyone care no. I hate when the announcers have no knowledge at all it’s just like WHY!. I hate it so much.
Quite a respectful piece of aircraft engineering ! They were underpowered but quite nimble , at .63 thrust to weight ratio it could run rings around the faster and more powerful F-4 Phantom which had a .86 thrust to weight ratio and Mach 2+ ! evening out the overall kill ratio during the Vietnam conflict !
One very bad ass fighter. This aircraft depending on the mission is very capable. Most announcers ruin airshows. They should only be yacking in case of an emergency. Most people know what they're looking at at airshows.
The announcer should read up a bit more, or just not talk at all. He forgot to mention the F-105 and F-8 which were the leading MIG-17 killers after the F-4. No A-7s were lost to the MIG17 and only 1 A-4.
Thank you Randy for keeping the original silver color with the Red Stars! That color scheme looks absolute best and classic on those MiGs
Thnx a lot from Russia for your sincere love of aviation.
MIG-17 and J35 Draken are two of my favourite planes. Russian planes are incredibly beautiful

There’s an epic turning fight featured on “Dogfights” I think where one of these and a Navy F-8 Crusader battled over Vietnam.
What a beautiful MiG-17B, awesome flying as well by the pilot.
Спасибо всем, кто содержит "на крыле" эти уникальные (для своего аремени самолёты) и кто это снимает и нам предлагает посмотреть. Спасибо!

Awesome video that really highlighted what the jet's strengths were which was tight turns. Thanks to you and Captain Ball for the awesome flying.
What a beautiful jet! Thanks for the video.
Magnificent aircraft.

Thanks for sharing this vid!
In full afterburner, the engine burns about 1.5-2 gallons per second. He took off with a full load of fuel and landed with a near empty tank.

what a nice display...the 17 has to rank up there as one of the best looking jets of all time.. A real piece of art work
