Hello Kris&Dot! A few weeks ago your greenhouse video hit my suggestions as I had watched a few Timber Frame projects by others recently. Looking at your channel page I found the first few barn episodes, watched them and then got Intrigued by your shop building. I binge watched the whole 79 episodes over a week or so, what a fantastic building! I haven't watched ALL your videos yet but will savor them in the coming weeks. I have the time to do so as I am battling terminal leukemia with it's attendant fatigue. I am a woodworker and electronics engineer forced to retire early, my interest in cool projects on channels such as yours keep me engaged and entertained. So you are doing me a great service by producing the documentaries of your life. Thanks from Portland, Or. USA!

Really informative video! Kris, you have mentioned before - and briefly shown - log defects but this is the first time you have explained in detail and shown how the defects ARE defects and what the effect the defects have on milling structural lumber. Sap pockets; ring shake; heart shake - just some of what you taught viewers about today. Totally fascinating, even though I have seen every video during which you are milling.
One of my favorite parts of any video is when you give viewers your pleased-with-your-work smile. That smile was on full display as you showed the beginnings of the water wheel project. So glad the project is doing well enough to earn the pleased smile.

Hi there. Love the vids and your enginuity!
Small tip/trick is to cover the mill with turtle wax hybrid sealant spray. Especially the slide rails. Not only does it protect
From rain but it makes it much more mud resistant and easy to slide
I use it on every vehicle and machine on the farm. Especially the windows. As well as windows and mirrors in the home. Outside windows stay amazingly clean
Pretty much any surface to improve glide and water mud snow resilience.
    Game changer!

👍👌👏 Yes, Sir! I totally agree that the sawdust bucket works well! And not only that! In fact you seem to be the only bandsaw sawyer on utube caring about collecting the saw dust. All the others have piles beside and under the sawmills. It sometimes even distracts the rail system. And if the sawdust gets wet, it does rot fast and becomes quite slippery.
    2) I would so much like to see someone making wood briquettes and/or wood pellets out of all the sawdust. Those products sell very well although they have become quite expensive. And if not produced for selling, one can use the pellets/briquettes for heating purposes himself. There are a lot of pellet pressing devices shown on utube. My favourite are the ones that make ~ 7cm diameter pellets (shaped like little cakes). I bet that you are able to build such a press (because of your ingeniouity and your machine park).
Best regards, luck and especially health to all of you (including the cute cat of course).

👍👌👏 Yes, you are right of course. But look at the big pile he already has. I know that they use it for the chicken coop floor as litter. Sawdust can also be put in the compost etc.p.p.. But all this is not so interesting than making pellets. 😁 :-) 2) Maybe Mr. Harbour will have a sawdust storage box at or in the new barn? It must be kept dry or it degrades relatively fast.
Best regards, luck and health in particular.

My great grandfather was a painter who was killed in a fall in a church in which he was painting the ceiling back in 1906. I have the inquest proceedings and it blamed the fall on the breaking of the timber plank upon which he was standing at the time. The expert witness stated that it was "quick broken" due to a fault in the original wood and having seen the ones you highlighted and how they can separate - i can see how it may well have happened. Thanks for that !

I am watching from New Zealand - you certainly have gathered a bit of gear and skills. I have an engineering background and now do a little part time teaching in wood and metal.
      Cheers

You need a small 230v stick welder and then an inverter for the tractor so you can fix stuff like that in the field :)

Try and not stress about things if you can, I know it can be hard, but try and relax. You and dot are doing a fantastic job at living a good sustainable life. This barn is going to be a wonderful project. The word of God says to take one day at a time, for tomorrow has enough troubles of its own. Regards ❤

I don't have much time to view UA-cam. I've only watched a couple of your uploads spread out since you started.
I'm amazed at the progress you've made, especially as most of the time it's probably just the two of you. Well done!
