What is the difference in sound between a concert and a tenor ukulele?

- Two ukuleles of identical specification played side by side so you can hear the difference between a concert and a tenor of the same model. The ukes in the comparison are:
Snail BH-8C Concert Uke: worldofukes.co.uk/concert-uku...
Snail BH-8T Concert Uke: worldofukes.co.uk/tenor-ukule...
Such a great video. I wish all comparison videos were like this: mostly music, examples back to back and miked from a reasonable distance/not compressed to oblivion. Thanks so very much!
This comparison proofs a concert can be as good as a tenor .In my opinion, in this case, the concert has a more refined and sparkling sound .Very nice to hear the differences.
Absolutely - definitely no 'best' size - it's what you like that matters.
But concert is very small and it can not makes melodies and it has less notes
@@Manuelebolognani Can not make melodies? Of course it can!
Each has their charms, but a Tenor has a rounder quality in my opinion. Less tinny.
Very good demonstration.
Thank you so much!!
Very good to compare both! Thanks!
Very helpful..and you play amazingly
I absolutely love these snail ukes! The playability, craftsmanship, and sound quality is amazing for the price! I just purchaced a BH-8C brand new for $160 and it should be arriving later this week. This video is the only demo I could find on this model, and it sold me on it! I currently have an AR-400 with spruce top and camphor burl b/s and a BHC-6T with cedar top and ebony b/s.
I came here to validate my assumption that I prefer the tenor, and you didn't disappoint. The tenor's attack is slower, rounder, and warmer. A concert would be better for a group or full mix, but the tenor has more depth and warmth as a solo. They both sound beautiful, very nice instruments! Also, the tenor will be more comfortable for me in transitioning from guitar.
thanks very easy to ear the difference wonderful !
I have a concert i got on accident as I thought I was getting a tenor haha I actually like the higher G string and thr sounds makes it feel like a harp at times. I only started playing 3 days ago but its just a feeling i felt from a tenor. I think i will buy another Concert and Tenor later on.
A happy accident nothing is a coincidence i think you'll end up coming back to the concert when you finally get that tenor
Volume, warmth, tone. Good comparison.
Great comparison - thanks!
Nae bother :)
I'm looking to start playing my very first instrument at 34, I can't hear a damn difference 😅, think Al go for the tenor as it's a bit cheaper and sounds pretty much the same to me 😊 thanks for the vid
I had a tenor before and I’m surprised to find I like the sound of the concert more.
I suppose it could be considered more distinctly 'ukulele'
Thank you for this comparison. Subbed😅
Thank you for this! Are you playing a particular song at 3:27? It sounds wonderful!
Nothing in particular, it's A#Maj7, Dm, F, Am - and on the Am, add the C on the A string while still playing Am, then off again.
I have two Martin guitars and love to play (alone) and sing. Not a performer I took up guitar in my late 50's and would love to have a Uke to goof around with. I would lean to Concert. Not looking for too much.
May I ask for the name of the song you start to play around the 4:40 mark? It sounds beautiful
Hi Billy - that's just something I made up for demos, I've never written it down I'm afraid. It uses the G and C strings open all the time - which act as a drone (and also benefit me as I don't have to worry about two of the strings when I am playing haha!)
@@WorldofUkes I was hoping I could listen to the "whole thing" but seeing as it's simply made for your demo, well, I'm a little sad haha. I hope you turn it into a full song one day! It's got such a nice folk sound.
@@billypatch3904 Hi Billy - often my tunes are segments of music I play with my band... but in this case you've heard the full thing already - it's just that, so far!
I have to play tenor because of my arthritis. They just won’t bend as good as they used too. Just so I can get the D cord which I use a lot.
What song are you playing around 5:44? Thanks for the comparison!
Just something I made up so I didn't run into any copyright issues with my videos!
I have a question, which one would you recommend for someone who's starting?
It's for a present and he liked both (tenor and concer), so I was asking myself which one is better for starters
Generally I'd say concert if people haven't picked one up before. It's in the middle in terms of size of hedging your bets isn't a bad idea.
i have a question what chords where u using in those first chord progressions
C F C G7 C for the very first one
Can you add markers labeled concert / tenor to the video? Wish you left it on the screen during comparison
There are markers at the beginning of each section. I thought that was sufficient. I don't believe I changed the order either, concert then tenor for each tune?
Just ordered enya 23" Concert nova. Is it good decisions?
Not a bad decision.
I hesitate btw Flight Mustang and L.Luthier The Maho. What do u recommend to me ?
aNueNue AMM3 for me. But between the two the L.Luthier.
@@WorldofUkes thx !! And btw flight fireball and Luthier Le Maho ?
Otherwise, I would follow your recommendations but MM3 is roughly 100€ more expensive than both of the others
Hello im buying a ukelele but idk which one i should pick (tenor or concert) what is recomended for a beginner?
I'd usually suggest a concert if you can't go and try some. It's the middle size between soprano and tenor and most people are OK with one. (For example, I have settled on playing a tenor, but I can play a concert fine too as it's not that much smaller).
@@WorldofUkes Noted😊
i like concert
I feel like the sustain in Tenor is better
Tenor has more open kind of sound quality, more rich compared to concert thanks for comparison
I Agree with you
hi, which size would you recommend for an absolute beginner. I'm 5'9.

@@WorldofUkes Thanks man, appreciate it.
you think it might be cool to use the tenor when doing mandola tuning?
Not something I've tried - maybe too little time and too much regular ukulele music to play!
I've got stumpy fingers ( middle finger is only 3 and half inches so soprano is no good but still struggle on a concert would a tenor make a difference ? ❤
Difficult to know, sounds like width across the fretboard is causing you more issues the size of the uke. And they're often the same width. Anywhere you can try one out for size?
cheers ❤
The Tenor has a more pleasing tone without a doubt.
Best Concert uke in a below 200$ price range you’d recommend for someone upgrading from a Soprano?
Sorry for the delay. Probably an aNueNue C3 for me.
Biggest differences I notice is how much posture changes. For me posture would be more important🙏
which one will you recommend for a beginner!😃
Most people can manage either - they're both still much smaller than a guitar. But I'd say concert... People who end up liking a small soprano most can usually manage a concert fine. People who end up preferring a larger tenor tend not to find a concert to be too small to be a problem. So concert seems a good bet!
3:26 please song name
Just something made up off the top of my head I'm afraid.
3:27
It would be nice to also hear how they actually sound above the soundhole, and not just the fingerboard.
I wouldn't play a ukulele over the soundhole generally. In front of the soundhole is usually where the sweet spot is.
Hello! May I please know why strumming in front of the soundhole is better? This is just pure curiosity as I am still a beginner 😊
Thank you for the excellent video ^_^
Hope you are all well and resting in Jesus saving love + grace ^_^
Blessings friends ^_^
I prefer the Tenor, sounds higher and more clear.
Gotta admit, I like the concert sound better but I'm 6'5" and I have big hands & fingers.
A concert with a wider neck might be OK, but no getting away from the fact it's a bit shorter!
Maybe a Long Neck Concert Like Uma Baby T.
Interestingly they made a tenor sized uke that sounds like a concert which I have. Bought it a few years ago at Sam Ash; it's actually labeled as a concert even though it's tenor size.
The concert more beautiful sound and the tenor the strongest sound.
That's a nice concert. But any concert models under $200 don't sound or feel good.
Totally disagree. I have played thousands of ukes and what you say might have been true ten years ago but certainly isn't now. I think you're very, very wrong in this!
Tenor sound more like a guitar
