Besides, the soprano on this guy looks tiny, but I'm quite petite, so I feel it really suits me. I seriously haven't seen any major price differences because of the size. There are cheap and expensive ones for every size. Bariton may still be the hardest to find.

She is starting to struggle it seems with finding room for finger placement even though she has skinny fingers she has long arms and large hands. Thinking of moving her up to a tenor or just getting her a guitar and letting her have both 😩 lol.
Thank you for this video, I was thinking of learning guitar, but I always thought they were too big and wanted something more compact. I may get one, leaning on a concert one. sounds the most versatile.
This helped me make my decision. I was leaning toward a Concert size and you just confirmed it for me. And i was just going to order one off line, without even trying one on for size, but i will go look at some today. Thanks!!!
I have 5 ukuleles. The one I use most is my 6 string "Lili'u". I won a Kamaka concert at our uke festival. I also have a steel string Leonard Young made of North American maple that I used instead of a pickup when I was performing solo. Your tutorial is excellent.
As someone who is just starting out I really appreciate this video a lot. I ended up with the Tenor. Thanks again! Ready to start my journey into music!
I have played guitar for fifty years but just bought online, a tenor ukulele. watching your video was so helpful and immediately ordered a set of strings with a low G for all the reasons you mentioned. Aloha...I've been studying and playing ukulele for about 10 years. From this platform I'd like to say you are the best ukulele teacher, videos, and ukulele website I have ever come across. Mahalo for all you do to educate and promote uke. Many retailers just want to grab the bucks and run. I've gone into over a 1000 music stores, even the big ones in San Francisco, and they give absolutely no attention, education or passion to this instrument when selling them. They might as well be selling tires at an auto parts store. You are a refreshing alternative to the norm. The passion you have for the instrument is evident in every video. Your teaching skills are legendary. Mahalo so much for your videos and for all you give the world of music.
Thank you! You really helped me. I'm excited to get my own ukulele. I think my choice will be the concert one, but as you mentioned, I have to try every single one of the ukulele. Thank you! 🙌
Great video! I have an 8-string Tenor and I absolutely LOVE it! the E and A strings are doubled, but the G and C strings are 1 octave apart... provides a really rich sound! (Also, as a tenor-leaning alto with LONG fingers, I find it much easier to play and sing with than the concert) :)
@@Ukelikethepros I really want to learn to play the uke, but I don't know what pricing is right. Is $50 a reasonable price range to start playing, or is it easier with a higher quality uke? Also, is it very difficult to learn to play by simply using the Internet and practicing a lot, or is it a better idea to get lessons from someone who is more professional and experienced?
This was so helpful, thank you! I’ve been wanting to pick up an instrument lately, and I’ve always adored the uke. Will definitely be looking into a concert or tenor. :)
This is a GREAT video. All play the same strum/chords so we really can tell the difference. I have big ol' fat hands to a tenor for me. This is an example of how "good" old videos never get "old"! !! !!!

Thanks for that as an absolute beginner your video is very helpful. I have watched a few others and still did not know which one to buy - now i do. I liked the tenor but will take your advice to buy a concert ukulele - and i was pronouncing it wrong. :)
Played guitar for 10+years. Never had an issue. I've found that with ukulele my fretting hands thumb muscles get strained constantly on anything smaller than a tenor. This is probably do to my short stent as a professional athlete and breaking both if my thumbs in a weird sequence of events! For you guys with larger hands and previous injuries make sure you choose something that is VERY comfortable. I've had to trade my ukes back in multiple times and am still looking for one that doesn't cause pain in my hands!
I really like your video. When I want a ukulele sound, I just capo my guitar at the fifth fret, and ignore the two lowest strings. It sounds just like a bassy ukulele. The baritone uke is the four highest strings open, tuning wise.
Right on, yes the capo works Sometimes it's hard to avoid the 2 low strings on the gutiar but if you do, you indeed have a ukulele. Yes the baritone is tuned exactly like the first four strings of a guitar D - G - B - E. Someday you will probably really enjoy having a ukulele.
I have a Baritone Uke tuned GCEA with Living Water custom GCEA strings. It sounds somewhat like a Tenor, but maybe with a more mellow tone. I like it because it fits for my larger hands and my lower voice when singing. Don't understand why more folks aren't doing this? The GCEA fits the music too for my Ukulele group. Lots of Uke makers are doing a Super Tenor, etc--which is very similar to a GCEA Baritone. One can even experiment with different strings to get a unique sound. Works good for jazz and blues music. I don't see any disadvantages of a GCEA Baritone for me.
I got all my questions answered from this video plus some answers to some important questions, that I didn't even know to ask haha. Really awesome and helpful video.
so helpful!!! I was gonna get the soprano because I knew it was the smallest, which I thought would be good but actually seeing it played, I’ve decided I want the concert :) hopefully I can find a good one that’s not more than $100 😭
I love the ukulele!!! It’s so fun to play! I have two ukuleles! My first ever one is a concert, I got that one for my birthday back in August, then I got my second, which is a tenor, for Christmas! I’m still getting used to the tenor cause it’s a bit bigger than a concert haha! I was actually inspired to play the ukulele by my favorite singer! Her name is Mandy Harvey! If you don’t know who she is than you should look her up cause she is AMAZING!! I actually got to met her too!! She’s the girl I’m hugging in my profile pic!
This is so great to hear. You will get use to the tenor, it's great to have the option of the concert an the tenor. I have heard of Mandy Harvey, and just looked her up to remind myself. She is incredible and such an inspiration to all of us.
There are also GCEA strings for the Baritone Ukulele, I haven't seen or played one because I haven't come across one yet in any music store that's tuned GCEA, if you have a Baritone Ukulele with DGBE strings, you have the option. Terry that would be a good video to compare a DGBE and a GCEA Baritone Ukulele. Thanks for making informative and comparative Ukulele videos.
Yes, that is a great point. I think many people get tenor ukulele strings with a low G and then put them on a baritone and tune it G C E A. I happen to have a baritone in D G B E and G C E A tuning here in the studio.
I'm five feet tall with tiny hands and I always look really funny playing a tenor or a baritone ukulele- it basically looks like I'm holding a guitar! Those two have to be my favorite sizes however as I prefer the deeper richer sound.
It’s a bit misleading to say, at 0:53, that “the smaller the body the higher the pitch.” The fundamental pitches are identical regardless of the body size. But smaller bodies cause the accompanying overtones/harmonics (higher pitches above the fundamental pitch) to yield a more trebly sound.
I'm an old guitar player (50+ years) and I'm buying a ukuele to take traveling. It's an instrument that I can put in overhead storage on an airplane and won't take up much space in any car. With neuropathy in my left (fretting) hand, I'm not about to totally relearn the fretboard so I'm opting for a baritone. Same top 4 strings as a guitar. (I say top to mean the higher frequencies.) In for a penny, in for a pound so I'm adding a Fishman pickup so that I have the option to carry that instrument along to performances as well. It may make it easier to invite other players in open mic situations. Multiple guitars don't always make it but uke, guitar, harmonica, fiddle & bass can sound sweet together.
Perfect, great idea. I love the baritone. Matter of fact just did a photoshoot today with my baritone for the new baritone course I have coming up in a few weeks. Keep me posted on your progress.
If you are playing ukulele and want to move to guitar, a parlour size guitar is a good place to start - they have a small body for a guitar, and a shorter scale length from nut to bridge saddle which means the string tension is less than on a standard guitar. All of this makes for a more comfortable play if you are a guitar beginner. I've been playing acoustic guitar for many years and bought my first parlour guitar just a couple of years ago and it was a revelation!
The baritone uke is tuned differently, but it's the same interval between the strings. It's just 5 half steps lower (basically, if you capo your baritone at the 5th fret then it's the same as any other ukulele,
Loved the video, but just occurred to me that I have no idea what ukulele means and the history of the instrument. (Definitely looking at a tenor or concert btw)

I got a soprano and I'm happy. Finally an accompanying instrument that has a similar range to mine. I never really liked the guitar because of the lower pitch. Besides, the soprano on this guy looks tiny, but I'm quite petite, so I feel it really suits me. I think it's something about the audio through the video that makes the soprano here sound kinda too loud. In real life it sounds beautiful (for my taste).
Also, I do play single notes on it. But I'm only learning, so maybe in the future I will consider a concerto. For now, I travel a lot, so that's another reason for me to want the smaller one. I love my uke :)
I like all sounds, and i‘m really motivated to start.
Even if my 12 year old self does not know how to get all that money- i‘ll stick with the suprano. I already tried it and it was really fun to play the chords.
Perfect, you can pick up a very reasonable priced ukulele on Amazon or maybe used. I'll be having some giveaways coming as well so stay tuned.
Uke Like The Pros thanks.
Army❤️
The only issue is every ukulele apart from the soprano is SOOOO expensive
Here are a couple of concert ukuleles that are reasonably priced. Flight Concert Ukulele amzn.to/2P9NrQr and Kala Concert Ukulele amzn.to/2P9ajzu
I seriously haven't seen any major price differences because of the size. There are cheap and expensive ones for every size. Bariton may still be the hardest to find.
@@99xara99 Your correct about the price, there will always be a model for you no matter how much or little you want to spend. Baritones are hard to find cause not all companies make them. KoAloha doesn't have a baritone. The demand is less for the baritone but I love my baritone and think its a great playing and sounding instrument.
Aklot Concert Ukeleles are only $60
@@StayVenturous I see them on Amazon and they are $10 off right now as well.
Oh god it’s my birthday and I want ukulele. But I’m so indecisive! 😰
Happy Birthday, just pull the trigger and get one, chances are you'll be buying many in your playing career.
• Lix • Well do you sing?
the tenor seems to be the most logical choice, especially having the option of dropping the G but I would assume it's a separate string you would have to use for that.
I picked up a tenor in Milan, Italy because I missed having a guitar while backpacking in Europe for months. Didn't know how to play it but learned instantly and the size of it REALLY helped because I was able to carry it on in airports. I change my high G string to a low G for that extra range. It's perfect.
Hi. So, it was your only carry on or how did you travel with it? I'm gonna travel with my soprano for the first time and I don't really know where to put it
We love a good ookulele
I have been told by some Hawaiians that I pronounce it wrong. But I was just with Paul from KoAloha and although he said he doesn't mind the way I say it, I recorded him saying ukulele and will be working on it.
Even pros differ on enunciation. Good example is Porsche car dealerships pronounce ‘Porsch’ where it being German in pronounced Porsch.ahh
@@captnemo75 I get the point you were making and I know it's just an example but this just seems so weird to me, so: why would you pronounce it Porschahh 😅 it's PorschE (with e as in Ever).
@@DaniWallaby Sorry Dani. You get a failing grade in German. The letter E in German is pronounced Ahh, not E as in Ever. It's a German car not Canadian, eh? 😁
@@captnemo75 I’m sorry to disappoint you, but apparently you’ve been misinformed^^. Who told you that anyway? I happen to be German myself so I doubt I and every other German have been pronouncing that letter wrong all our lives 🙈 A is pronounced ah. That’s why we have the letter a 😁
great video, to quote "If your 6ft 5 and have huge hands then probably a tenor is going to be better for you" that's exactly me! That line helped me make up my mind in what to buy cheers!
Thank you so much for the comment. I got a lot of slack for making that comment. Many people here on UA-cam and Facebook let me know they disagreed with it. But I'm really glad it helped you. What are you going to get?
Thats what I am here for! My 15 yr old has a concert uke from 2018 but she is now 5'11 and can palm a basketball. She is starting to struggle it seems with finding room for finger placement even though she has skinny fingers she has long arms and large hands. Thinking of moving her up to a tenor or just getting her a guitar and letting her have both 😩 lol.
Puff
I've got a Tenor uke and I'm soooo in love with it. But, I would really love a Baritone
IKRRR
Thank you for this video, I was thinking of learning guitar, but I always thought they were too big and wanted something more compact. I may get one, leaning on a concert one. sounds the most versatile.
Good idea, let me know which one you get.
How was your journey??
I have played guitar for fifty years but just bought online, a tenor ukulele. watching your video was so helpful and immediately ordered a set of strings with a low G for all the reasons you mentioned. I love the fuller sound whereas the high G reminds me of a five string banjo, the 5th string being a high-note string. Thanks for your guidance.
dude, you are a silver ukulele fox. thanks for the eye candy.
I've been playing for a year with a soprano and now I've decided to get a tenor. Thank you for the info on it!
Think it will be a tenor
Me: played the ukelele for 3 years
Also me: just realized that i have been playing a tenor the whole time
Which size is the best pick for a beginner?
@@sourav___raj soprano if you’re just starting and your hands are small but if you hands are a bit big go with concert
I'm gonna buy the concert one. My birthday is on may 6th and I think this is the right gift for a birthday. 🎁
This makes me think of choosing between concert and tenor even though I am just a beginner ☺️
@@balleralert8 I ended up buying a soprano ukulele but it's not bad actually. I bought a high quality local brand ukulele in the philippines. No regrets so far
I will start learning with soprano..your video is very informative for someone who woke up one morning and decided to learn how to play Ukelele.Thank you sir
I really like the sound of the tenor, although the concert ukelele is good too. I hope I'll be able to get one. It's really fun learning instruments and I hope my parents allow me to buy even a second hand one :') Sorry, parents.
hope you got what you wanted!
I'm 30 and I've never learned to play any instruments before. This encourged me to try to learn playing the Ukulele.
Wow, awesome, I'm so glad that you told me this. You have tons of great content here on my channel and other channels as well. I also have a Beginning Ukulele Bootcamp Course for $20 on the Uke Like The Pros website bit.ly/2HZCsHd
i have really long fingers and my mom got me the soprano when i asked her for at least a tenor or baritone so that’s c o o l
Is it okay for u?
I mean it’s not horrible but it is very difficult for me to get some notes every now and then
Could you pls help me. I am also having longer fingers. I was planning to buy soprano, should I change it to concert?
buy BASS
I got a tenor ukulele for my first ukulele, It sounds good trust me. but if you have small fingers reaching out for chords as a beginner is pretty hard. I visited this because it has a more clearer explanation. and Im thinking of getting a new ukulele while stuck on quarantine.
I’m learning how to play as a beginner on a cheap soprano. But I already am so committed I want to buy a better ukulele. I am really loving the tenor but worried about the high g low g differences ... still want one though! Great video!
Thank you! The best comparison in UA-cam. All I wanted to hear is in this tutorial.
tenor is almost the perfect medium. good for writing those sad songs and great cords. also great for more upbeat stuff. really great.
Baritone= might as well learn guitar
Ikr!
Yep. It’s literally 2/3 of a guitar.
Thank you! You really helped me. I'm excited to get my own ukulele. I think my choice will be the concert one, but as you mentioned, I have to try every single one of the ukulele. Thank you! 🙌
Perfect. You are most welcome.
What is the recommended Uke when you want to play some Lo-fi stuff?
CON D. ORIANO have you found an answer
@@dayanam nah, but I think Concert Uke will do the Job.
Im getting my KALA tenor uke in 3days. Very excited and thanks to Terry for helping out through his channel. have a nice day😊😊😊😊
Great video!
Love how you're so active in the comments! I don't know anyone who plays the uke and it's nice to know I can come here and ask questions.
Of course, you are welcome.
I had a soprano ukulele before but it was too small (I’m 13). I returned it for a Luna Concert ukulele two days ago and I absolutely love it
I was planning to buy my first ever ukulele. Thank you!
This is a GREAT video. All play the same strum/chords so we really can tell the difference. I have big ol' fat hands to a tenor for me. This is an example of how "good" old videos never get "old"! !! !!!
Great appreciate it
I’m gonna go with the concert I have small hands and I’m like a beginner so I think it’s the best choice
Hi! Omg I have small hands and fingers too and also want to buy a concert uke🥺 Did you choose concert? How it is going now? (Sorry if I made a mistake somewhere, English is not my native)
yes! finally, someone who doesn't push a beginner for a soprano uke 😭❤️
thanks for your info ..just ordered a concert ukulele :)
Nite Where’d you get it from?
My friend has started teaching me how to play on her uke and i think im gonna get my own uke on my birthday. I really cant wait!
damn he rly had to flex his skills like that
This helped immensely. Thanks. I'm going all George Harrison and buying a Ukulele now.
I just wanted to say thank you. This video was really helpful for me
I appreciate you saying this. You are welcome.
this really helped me choose what i wanted. i’m a complete beginner and went for a tenor! thank you
I'm about to buy my first ukulele. This vid is really helpful, thx for sharing ☺️
Great, what you are going to get?
Based on your recommendation, the concert. Now i just need to decide for the brand 😅
Did you enjoy? Are you still playing?
Very helpful, thanks!
Thanks for that as an absolute beginner your video is very helpful. I have watched a few others and still did not know which one to buy - now i do. I liked the tenor but will take your advice to buy a concert ukulele - and i was pronouncing it wrong. :)
That tenor with the low G sounds beautiful.
Very informative video. I personally like the concert with the high G. Bigger than concert and with a low G the sound good, but more like a guitar.
I agree, I like a high G on my concert as well. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you soooo muchhh..I'm buying mine online and was worried so happy i came across this!
Perfect. What did you decide to get?
@@Ukelikethepros A concert!
What ukulele that u use?and what brand
I wanna start learn but idk what to buy can u give me reccomendation?
After watch you video, i buy concert uke. N i love it so much. Then i buy soprano for my 11yo daughter.
so helpful!!! I was gonna get the soprano because I knew it was the smallest, which I thought would be good but actually seeing it played, I’ve decided I want the concert :) hopefully I can find a good one that’s not more than $100 😭
Same here😢
For beggining I bought the soprano ukulele and today, a year of playing I decided to buy the concert ukulele :)
*after a year
I love the ukulele!!!
I’ll go with a baritone. I’m a sucker for the lovely low and bass-like sound! :)
Same here. I ordered baritone but it will take 15 days to arrive :(. All the best to you.
IDK why but I instantly fell in love with this video💗
I'm five feet tall with tiny hands and I always look really funny playing a tenor or a baritone ukulele- it basically looks like I'm holding a guitar! Those two have to be my favorite sizes however as I prefer the deeper richer sound.
Yes, both the tenor and the baritone are great instruments and I agree with you, I also prefer their size and deeper tone.
0:43 Sorpano
1:53 Concert
3:11 Tenor
(Higher G)
5:19 Tenor (Lower G)
5:47 Baritone
I play tenor and baritone, concert is in the closet, but I do love it's sound
I miss my ukulele in my hometown. Now I'm in New World and I do know place who sell ukulele. So sad...
Keep me posted on your progress.
simple but helpful thanks for the advice
Your welcome, glad it helped.
I just bought an oak Bonanza Renegade thinbody Temor, I'm so excited
The larger the body gets we get the more guitar like sound. Soprano or concert for me!
Doing uke lessons when school finishes (im year around so in about 2-3 more weeks) I think concert is perfect for me. Thanks
This was really helpful thanks🤩🤘
Your welcome.
It's just 5 half steps lower (basically, if you capo your baritone at the 5th fret then it's the same as any other ukulele,
Thank you for explaining all types of ukelele with demo❤
Loved the video, but just occurred to me that I have no idea what ukulele means and the history of the instrument. (Definitely looking at a tenor or concert btw)
Thank you. Ukulele means jumping flea and there is a good documentary on Netflix called "The Mighty Uke"
In two more days, I'll get my own ukulele..This video helped me to choose..So I would like to choose Tenor 🌹
