Richard M I’ll try to get Mark to answer you questions. The wheels are really affordable at 299 pounds. Gravel kings tires are also very affordable here in Japan, around 4500yen. Mark said on this first ride that they felt a lot snappier and faster to accelerate compared to the old ones. No climbing done yet though, that’s the real test.
The wheels cost 44,000 yen delivered plus 3800 import duty + tax, the tyres and rotors cost 17,000 yen so about 64,800 yen in total (about $610 US at today's exchange rate) so you are looking at around $1.03 US per gram. DO I feel it was worth it? Most definitely. Dropping 590 grams on the wheels has made a big difference in the way the bike rides. It is much snappier and climbs much nicer. The previous wheels were nice but they were overkill for what I needed them for. The bike feels like it accelerates quicker with the new wheels on. With the Hope/Mavic MTB wheels on, it felt like I was using a lot more energy getting the bike up to speed.
@@ridesofjapanHi! Great video! I really liked this model. Help me choose the frame. I have a height of 186 centimeters, the inner length of the leg is 87 centimeters. What is the right frame for me 56 or 59? There is no way to try on frames
New to your channel. :) I am liking it very much. Thanks so much for not only the entertaining format, but they are educational too. Bravo. I'm a retired dude living on a Greek island now. Used to race road bicycles back in California almost 40 years now...I'm in the process of getting back into cycling after all these years. I'm really liking this 'gravel' riding I am just learning about. It is the most appropriate type of cycling, I'm thinking, for both my age and the Greek island I am on. I just had a custom road/gravel frame done by SHAND cycles up in Scotland. In steel of course! :) Anyway, sorry for the long message. I'm just super excited to get riding again after all these years and wanted to let you know I appreciate you teaching an old dog (me) some new tricks in cycling. Thanks again.
51jjm thanks mate! Appreciate the kind words! It sounds like you’re living the perfect retired life! Life goals hehe. Good luck with the new bike and riding! 👌
Absolutely incredible videography.... The choreographed cycling mixed with perfectly timed drone shots, in the perfect gravel ride location, in perfect lighting, with perfect cycling/photography weather. Incredible.... just incredible... The bike was really cool, but the videography was world-class.
Troy Lunn wow, you are too kind sir! I’m no videographer by any means but it’s definitely more fun trying to piece together a segment of riding this way. Super happy that people viewing it seem to like it as well. Thanks for the support!
super nice aerial shoot! my background is mtb. riding drop bar in my single speed commuter for about half year now making me bit roadies wannabe. but this whole new thing called gravel/all road riding feels like the two worlds colide haha and i think i fall in love
Very nice drone shots! And cool video...although I think if you're happy to get such a heavy bike to start with you really shouldn't be worried about weight :)
Lars Rehm thanks man! Hehe, yeah the whole “weight weenie” thing is not the main thing with this bike and should not be taken too seriously. Still, it’s fun to try and see how far you can go without going too bananas with the spending :) Robust and reasonable light parts for gravel is not that crazy expensive luckily.
Thanks! And cheers for the sealant tip! Here in Japan it's actually really hard to find anything apart from Stans... or IRC (which is just rebranded Stans). I've heard good things about Orange Seal as well.
I have the same wheels on my cx bike - they are great! Have you tried Peaty's tubeless sealant? Unlike glitter it has biodegradable 'nano-platelets'. You can get handy pouches to carry with you on longer rides too.
How do you feel this bike rides on the road? I got a 75 km commute to work which I try to make at least once a week. I use my carbon racer for that, and do not want to get something that is way too chunky to feel fast. But this bike looks so darn nice... I am seriously thinking bout getting rid of both my Salsa Marrakesh tourer and my Scott CR1 and get this frameset and 2 sets of wheels and build a do-it-all bike with Shimanos new GRX-groupset... One set of wheels as light as I dare go, and one set of wheels with at least 32 spokes for gravel and touring...
Him Uykheang lighter wheels for the same price. Mark seems to like them, although he had a few problem with the lock ring in the front hub, once that was sorted they’ve been problem free I think.
600 grams is a non-negligible amount of weight, well done guys. No compatibility issues between the SRAM calipers and the Shimano rotors? And thank you for the link towards the Hunt wheels. How does he like them?
BGPaul thanks mate! No problem with Shimano rotors and SRAM calipers at all. Mark went down to 140mm from 160mm rotors so there is most likely a small drop in breaking power... he’s not an heavy man though. The old rotors where cheap Shimano 6-bolt ones as well, no problems there either. Check the reply comment from Mark in the pinned comment for the feel of the wheels.
Another rad vid! Was the final weight excluding pedals? Bottle cages/accessories? I'm trying to hit a 10kg sans pedals on mine too... ha! Sealant Wise, give Orange Seal a crack. They have these micro glitter like particles already inside and the added bonus is that it doesn't coagulate into wee boogers, and provides a really nice latex coating inside the tyre (particularly nice for higher pressure road tyres).
All the info about the wheels can be found on their page. www.huntbikewheels.com/collections/road-disc-wheels/products/mason-x-hunt-four-season-disc-brake-road-bike-wheelset-tubeless-ready
I forwarded the comment to Mark and this was his response: "One of the main reasons is that it used Reynolds 853 which is very similar to the tubing used on the Field (853 proteam). Didn’t really consider too many other options to be honest. Had I known I could have got a Stinner for about 1000usd more, I may well have saved my pennies and gone with that instead."
Tim Rice I have about 2000km on my pair and they still seem to Hold up well. Thread on the rear show some wear for sure, but nothing out of the ordinary, a few cuts here and there but not punctures.
Rides of Japan thank you. Compared to a Compass Barlow pass extralight. The gk has,a scary light weight. But we can buy 2x the gk for the price of the extralight compass tire. Lol
I'm sure something like that is on the cards in the future. For now Mark used an old SLX cassette he already had... I will do my best to convince him though!
You got some nice stuff on there. How much per gram did it cost to save 590g? Do you feel the difference and do you feel it was worth it?

No big climbs done yet, but there are a few very short climbs up the river banks which give a good indication of how they will climb.
You've lost the weight at the right place to really feel it.

Brilliant upgrade - The missing 90 g are easily accessible with another cassette. Thank you for sharing the impressions. Stunning work as usual 👍

love your channel! greetings from Singapore!
Any planned updates on the niner with a one vid recap ?
Thanks
Currently no dedicated videos on the niner planned, it will do a cameo appearance in the next video though.
Nice, but if you want a lighter metal frame consider Titanium.
this, trying to weight weenie a steel frame ? you want a light and durable metal frame.... you gotta go Ti
Nice Video as always! Little reminder: Peatys Tubeless Sealant comes with glitter already in the milk. Works great for me!

The selection of sealant available here in Japan is really limited... or maybe I just don’t know where to look.
Hopefully I’ll catch on soon though.
That's a lot of glitter, jeezuz. I noticed my Orange Seal has a tiny amount of glitter. :)

how do you like the mason x 4 season? and why you dont choose the 4 season gravel wheel? thanks

It’s definitely durable enough for gravel, it all depends on what wheels you put on them.
Awesome thanks a lot

weight is with (heavy) pedals, cages, pump mount, Garmin mount and light mount. So fully ready to ride :)

Quick one bro. Whats the inner width of the new Hunt?

Is this the 19mm internal width model or the 24mm internal width model?
Mellissa Nash 19mm
@@ridesofjapan Any reason you didn't go with the wider Mason x Hunt model, which looks to be similar weight?
Mellissa Nash those are 650b wheels and Mark already had a pair of 650b wheels.
The 19mm are 700c.

Tim Rice exactly, that was my reasoning as well... even if I would have blown out a tire on the first ride it would still be cheaper than compass 😂
Rides of Japan さん丁寧な説明をありがとうございます❗
you forgot the freehub sound !!!
Should of used a xtr cassette
Henri Bedford with unlimited funds yes :)
The xtr don’t come in 11-42 however (or did remember that wrong 🤔)
My ritchey only weight 1580 and fast as hell....(no tubeless magic- young trained legs only =D)
Should have used XT or SunRace cassette for sub 10kg :)
I'm sure something like that is on the cards in the future. For now Mark used an old SLX cassette he already had... I will do my best to convince him though!
haha still heavier than my little minivelo? xP Sorry, couldn't resist :D
Those are some heavy wheels. If you switch to tubulars you would save another pound at least!
Nice video
If you really do save weight, buy gabaruk cassette
or at least sunrace, it's lighter for almost the same price
590 gs! thats two 2 small beers less or dont eat for 2 days which is way cheaper. just sayin :-)
Nice video, now about the “music”
