Plenty of blind people get around without a dog. Dogs are a health hazard and a nuisance in all sorts of public places. I don't care if its so well trained that it can do the Hokey Pokey. Dogs belong nowhere except in homes and parks
@Harry-bn5mp As it says within the video, refusing guide dogs is illegal. The fact that guide dogs could be a health hazard doesn't matter when it is against the law. For pets, yes, they should not be allowed, but this doesn't apply to guide dogs. Just because blind people don't have to use a guide doesn't mean they should have to adjust just because they were refused by a restaurant, which is illegal.
There needs to be stiff fines for places that do the 500 for the person and 10k for the establishment AND they need to be strictly enforced. A couple of 10k fines would do wonders to make sure training was up to par.
I've been doing a little research on this subject and it is really hard to find out what the actual penalty is for refusing service to a guide dog. There's loads of "Oh this is illegal" But what is the actual penalty? If anyone knows, perhaps posting a link to the information would be gratefully received.
I’m disabled & chronically ill myself. I thin it comes from a place of fear; when you were child did you ever have an older relative who got moderately to severely sick and were in the hospital, who had a lot of wires and tubes all over? I did, and lots of people I’ve spoken to using my BS in Psychology, and I think it comes down to 1. It being so different and outside the scope of your daily routine as a child, 2. Seeing them with wires and tubes everywhere, sickly looking, etc when you’re used to seeing them how they were before. Uncertainty, change from the norm, the fact that your parents are worried and sad and upset bc someone is very sick/terminal, and when you’re a child and your parents or caregivers are upset it both instinctively upsets kids, but it also mentally and emotionally upsets kids bc your parents are usually I control of the situation 100%. So when they aren’t, it’s scary and things feel out of control and unsafe. Adults who are close friends with people who have a serious illness can start to feel that way as well. A friend’s cancer, hair loss, and IV/central line/port for chemotherapy plus the idea of losing them, the sensation of being powerless to help them or change the situation, and out of control because life is in an upheaval and their normal consistency and structure is gone, and all of that can cause close friends and family to begin to feel anxiety and depression, and can lead to feeling nervous when you’re around them. I believe that these feelings can be why as a society we still don’t make enough accommodations for the chronically ill, physically disabled, and blind and deaf, and why not everything has been made accessible to them despite living in the year 2021 where we have the knowledge and technology to do so. It may also be a result of “othering” that is common in western cultures like the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia + New Zealand, and parts of Europe. A sense of “well that effects OTHER people, not me, so let them figure it out on their own” . We even have this idea within our own families, where people in western cultures do things like sending relatives with learning/mental disabilities to institutions to live and putting elderly parents in nursing homes instead of caring for them at home. To other cultures, western societies idea of “children must move out of the family home at 18 or shortly after” and “adult children who have never moved out, or who move back in with their parents due to financial problems or other difficulties/ are losers” are strange and cruel, they take care of their sick and elderly and it is common for adult children to live in their parents home until they get married, and in some places even after marriage. I hope that as we move forward in human history, and we see more and more people fight and protest against things like racism, misogyny and abuse of women, toxic masculinity, the idea that "men cannot be raped" or that "men cannot cry", xenophobia, that we also fight how the disabled, blind and deaf are treated and make things more accessible

The solution to this problem is so simple. The Equality Act laws of assistance dogs need to be enforced. Those individuals and businesses who refuse them must be issued with the penalty fine of up to £1000. If penalty fines were thoroughly and consistently issued to all offenders, this poor behaviour would soon stop.

There need to be serious financial penalties for this kind of thing. Is it to do with the increased amount of Muslims in the UK? To them, dogs are dirty and devilish creatures. It's just a question.
Name and shame if it's illegal then these restaurants need to be fined an actually closed or give free meals to blind people with their dogs and the dogs get fed too
Be interesting to know the religion of the people who refused them entry, as far as I know the cult of islam is the only one that considers dogs "unclean".

It seems like it is you who has a very particular axe to grind on this issue. Get a grip.
It is clear these restaurants need to be fined into oblivion - or threatened with the possibility I’d they do not clean up their act. And every restaurant needs to be informed that this is what they will face if they do not alter their practices. It was 2021 when this report was broadcast. It’s now 2024. That this is still happening . . .
Im a mother with a partially sighted daughter that is awaiting a Guide dog. I feel so sick with worry about her getting refused entry somewhere. She's lost all her confidence in the past years so a confrontation with a dog would be devastating to her rehabilitation. The laws need to be strengthened in this area.
No we don't, the law is quite clear in that access should be given. If after 15 years any place refuses access then they need to taken to court, it's an offence.
It's odd. When this happens in the United States, you can be absolutely certain that it's an idiot doing it. The ADA has been in place since 1990 and all the Aholes have been fined and sued out of business. It seems to still be going on a lot in the UK. Then again, the concept of customer service is absolutely alien in the UK, so maybe it's not surprising.
