  • A combination of the Filipino Martial Art, Arnis, and a modern interpretation of the Filipino warrior spirit through the use of modern hip-hop beats and bamboo sticks.
    The Suman Brothers and Halaya Sisters present the original dance of "Kawayan" - a hybrid form of rhythmic beats combined with elements of Arnis, modern stomp, and cultural flair. Established at the University of Cincinnati circa 1997, the Kawayaneros and Kawayaneras re-emerged in 2011 at the Midwest Association of Filipino Americans conference with an all new cast at the Ohio State University bringing a high-energy performance dedicated to the fighting spirit of our people.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

      Me me yep, look at most filipino war dances theyre usually shown to teach balance or methods of using weapons and drills while this is just people hitting sticks and dancing

    • @jophetjunus7412
      @jophetjunus7412 3 роки тому

      Yeah. Looks more theatrical but More of the beat is use by head hunters when then went home after cutting the chief's head of the enemy tribe. The real one is not bamboo but spears with 2-5 spikes.

      oh no,it won't. It's a Fil-Am interpretative dance, that has nothing to do with Tribal Filipino dance moves.

    • @KenMikaze

      @Imperial Commander Yue Fei 岳飛 there ain't a pure traditional "Filipino" culture that is purely homogeneous to the whole Philippines.

    • @doncarloquita4759
      @doncarloquita4759 4 роки тому +4

      @Imperial Commander Yue Fei 岳飛 Filipino culture is based on Filipino identity. And Filipino identitiy exemplifies adaptability(taking the tones of anything they come in contact with). And if we are going to be technical about it, the "Filipinos" back then were the half-breeds and the "Indios" were the natives. Pinoy culture isn't pre-Hispanic; it's post-American. Pre-Hispanic tribal culture isn't the only Pinoy culture, it's a part of the history of Pinoy culture. If you believe that Pinoy culture is pre-Hispanic then you're analyzing culture in a bubble. In the real word, no culture exist in a bubble. All culture everywhere is constantly building upon itself and developing as time goes on. As a Filipino, whether you mean to or not, you're gonna develop certain associations to specific cultural patterns. This celebratory dance-prayer to combat sounds Filipino modern.
      Edit: It's basically the Taglish of Filipino dances.

    ehm.... i'm confused...what tribe is this suppose to be based on? I know most of the tribal dances and song rhythms but this is sounding too modern.

    • @doncarloquita4759
      @doncarloquita4759 4 роки тому +12

      It sounds kinda like sinulog with its beat. But made to sound more dynamic like fighting. This is modern filipinos melding modern sound with tradition. It's not supposed to sound like any tribe. It doesn't have to be based on a tribe. It just has to sound Filipino. Otherwise, it would just represent a region. And the most popular traditional sound and recognized by all Filipinos is heard in festivals.
