I started to watch your channel a couple of weeks ago and decided to purchase a pair of small Godox flashes. I am starting my adventure in macro photography. Thank you for your time and effort in sharing your knowledge. You are an inspiration.
Growing pollinator flower gardens around my neighborhood has brought me plenty of winged subjects. And as you point out sometimes the flowers themselves make great macros.
I feel your pain. my pet hate here in the UK - Being a macro photographer you are always around the bushes and off the path where all the lazy dog owners never pick up there dog shit and I always end up with it on my boots. Even worse is when they are off the lead and come bounding at you barking when you are bent over getting that rare shot, man you should hear me curse in front of dog owners. I have now learnt to go places where dog owners are too lazy to venture to, or are restricted in access. the less idiots around the better and I can be at one with nature.
Hi, thanks for you videos, they give me such a great inspiration. If I may recommend try Peak Design clutch for the camera if you're using the battery grip. I find it so much better to keep steady and less stressful for the hand. God bless you!
Loved it and the lighting on the subjects was spectacular! I went with your suggestion and purchased the Godox flashes but wanting to use a diffuser and wondering what yours is. Thanks again for an enjoyable video
Nice work. Good to see that other macro photographers also forget to turn their hat around. When you were among the nettles, all I could think was, "Watch out for those nettles!"
@@StewartWoodArt we walk around the cliff paths on a regular basis doing Macro and the amount of dog walkers we pass with no dog bags is amazing there are bins only in the Car Parks . I am just in the process of setting up my camera with a flash with a ring light recommended by supplier what are your thoughts on that?.
Great video - thanks for sharing your expertise with such casual style! Those weevil photos were otherworldly. Plus, I've finally found someone who is as vexed by the behavior of irresponsible dog owners as I am! Haha!
I don't always watch the bloopers because the office ones seem to be you just mis-speaking which isn't all that interesting but this time you had me actually LOLing. Well worth watching until the end. :)
Great stuff. Isn't it nice to get out of the house! Hearing you say that you look for movement when searching for macro subjects was interesting; I've tried to do the same, but rarely get decent results because whatever I spot is unlikely to stay in the same place long enough for me to get close enough to get a picture. I think this is down to my basic camera setup and clumsy bushcraft (Bush? In t'north of England? Give over, lass!). I've not got a proper macro lens; with extension tubes there's no working distance to speak of so I have to get to within 3 or 4 inches to frame a shot. Before I've closed in on my prey, it's flown away. So I'm more of a scavenger of still subjects than a hunter of moving ones. Incidentally, the Tyrannosaurus rex 🦖reference from Spielberg's Jurassic Park films ('vision based on movement') is at least 50% urban myth and 50% questionable. Although it made for a good 'charismatic' film character, there's a lot of debate about the beastie's lifestyle and feeding habits. (And the real Velociraptor was about the size of a chicken. 🐓👀) Of course it pleases people to think of T-rex charging about, running down prey like a modern-day big cat, making it seem like a heroic, manly, macho, top-predator, but there's another school of thought based on studies of its bone structure, nasal cavity volume, jaws and teeth that says it was a lurker and scavenger, (a bit like a crocodile), pouncing on passing prey from ambush, but mostly feeding on carrion like a vulture. Not pretty, but that's what its back, neck, legs and teeth were shaped to do best: not killing, but pulling chunks from carcasses. That's why it was built like a JCB - so it could dominate a kill and drive off competitors. When you're THAT big, nobody laughs at your tiny forearms or argues about who made the kill in the first place. But in modern terms, T-rex would have been as unlikely to run after its prey as an alligator, and wouldn't have had or needed very good eyesight. So... its vision wouldn't have been based on movement; instead, it would have had a fantastic sense of smell to help it find its next meal. This view of T-rex is deeply upsetting for people who like to identify themselves with it as a cool, unstoppable killing machine. You see the same shock and denial when they find out that eagles aren't noble, brave, intelligent birds: they're as much opportunistic thieves, pirates, and corpse-munching scavengers as they are active hunters. Eagles are certainly powerful and - to human eyes - majestic, but they eat a lot of carrion and are undeniably stupid. The crow family is far more intelligent, but eagles have a better Propaganda & PR Department. 🦅😁 So, anyway, I just wanted to say that your own vision is probably a lot more acute than T-rex's ever was, and the results are plain to see in your wonderful photography. 🙂 Thanks for the video. Isn't it ironic that this Comment should be so huge and long and focused on gigantic dinosaurs when your Channel is all about photographing teeny-weeny things... Whatever. Regards to Bob rex, wherever he may be.
hello great movie I'm trying to record a movie macro I already have some interesting shots I really like the background in your movie and the processing did you record the movie how do you process these photos?
I watched 2 videos and the dog shit sold it to me and I subscribed. I was out with my two year old son yesterday seeing what wildlife was on offer and I was watching him in the viewfinder when he tripped up and fell in dog shit. I own 2 dogs.. I manage to pick their shit up (and bin it), why can’t everyone else..
I always use TTL unless the batteries are dying I flick to. manual and boost it a little more. I also swap over the the flash controller batteries when desperate as they have loads of juice still in them.
Amazing video full of shit!! The colours of your photos and video sequences were outstanding. Did you use a tripod for the macro-video sequences? Thanks for shearing your know-how!!
Learning depth of field is important to most people.
Haha the classic mistake of wearing the cap forwards when trying to take the first photo :) Nice video, beautiful photos!
I’m always doing it lmao, thank you for watching.
😂
More of these walks would be most wecome. Thank you.
Very fine video i like that much better outside than inside...more people needs to get out in nature it's so beautifull
Thank you.
luv how macro slows you down...a hedge becomes a jungle '')

I enjoyed the walk in the park. Nice balance between the close ups and showing a little environment with the insects. Thanks
Thank you.
Big thumbs up for the outdoors shoot - and another thumbs up for the enviro-awareness/sensitivity.

Stewart are you planning on making them for sale?
I’m thinking about it but need to get the materials to do so.

wise words from wood in the woods, i would say so

I agree with you about dog owners who don't clean up after their dogs, shites me to tears!!! Great video as always though, love your bloopers 😂😂
Dog owners do my head in, thanks for watching!
In the UK irresponsible dog owners like to toss the black shit bags on the barbed wire fences which looks real pretty.
Brilliant vid 👏
Thank you.
Brilliant video watch a lot of your videos on macro we have the same problem here in Guernsey(black bags or lack of them being used).
It’s a big problem.

Could you please tell us what macro lens you were using on your Canon R when you took these shots?
Thanks!
Outstanding beauty.

Great vid Stewart . Have you changed your flash set up . Love the Dog shite pics . Keep them coming .
I did change the flash to the Godox MF12 twin macro flash.

I waited for this comment to come out in paperback, great read!
as for working distance, 3 or 4 inches is pretty good!
Hi what camera do you also use to take the video footage please?.
The main video camera is a Canon EOS R with a 35mm lens, my B camera for close up macro shots and alternative angle is an iPhone 12 Pro.
Loved this video Stewart. Why do people bag up pooh and leave it there?!
No idea.
They're only half lazy 🙂
hello great movie I'm trying to record a movie macro I already have some interesting shots I really like the background in your movie and the processing did you record the movie how do you process these photos?
I currently just hold a flashlight right up to my subject. It's a fairly bright one
Love the videos, do you get your shots dark in camera or is it mostly how you do your edits?
I expose correctly in camera then decide on the colour tones later on in Lightroom.
Amazing video sharing my new friend. New subscriber.,stay connected and have a great weekend
Splendid photos. I just wonder isn't ISO 400 a bit high while using a flash? Thanks.
No it's not, but it does allow the flash to use less power so the battery's last longer.
Ah I was wondering the same thing…if you’re using a flash why not use iso 100? I wasn’t considering the flash battery life.
Unfortunately, one of the downsides of the Godox MF12 twin macro flash is that you can’t replace the batteries if they run out of power.
7:27 is the best
What brand is your Diffuser on the lens ?? TIA
I use a modified crafty bells diffuser, a full build log can be found on my patroen page.
How do you film video-macros? Do you use some LEDs?
All natural light for the macro video.

Man I wish everything wasn’t so expensive these days.
So do I🙁
TTL for the flash? Interesting.
