    „Metal“ is a very broad spectrum and what belongs to it and what doesn't is very relative and also varies from person to person.

    I simply listen to what appeals to my mood. I do listen to a lot of metal. But I also listen to post punk, electronic, dark classical, old rap. I could go on and on.
    Metal has always been my favorite. But there are so many types of music that are relatable.
    Metal also has so many different styles that are different, I could listen to it exclusively and still always find something to fit my mood.
    I see nothing wrong with only listening to metal if you're incorporating different styles.

    Hey Jon! Great way to make me think about that as well. I don't want to get too long winded but I lift in my own gym 3 days a week, train in Karate twice a week, I'm a full time Butcher at a grocery store and I just started my own channel the end of last year that I only do "Metal Reviews". All I listen to is Metal. I've listened to over 100 albums this year alone just to keep up and have something to write and talk about. I force myself to listen to mellower music when I spend time with my beautiful wife. So, I kinda understand how you feel about this topic. My opinion is that Metal has always been my "Go To" since I was a teenager and I love it more now and I'm 55 years old! Cheers brother 🤘😎🍻

    I've been a Metal Head for over 35 years. I started with Hair Bands in the 80s and moved on to Thrash Metal, and then Extreme Metal such as Death Metal, Black Metal, Grindcore, Doom and so on. I also love 80s Pop music. There's so much great music out there. I never wanted to pigoen hold myself to one genre of music. If I like it I'll listen to it, I have no shame about what I listen to. I do however prefer old metal, that I grew up on. But this channel is so great, since it's introduced me to a lot of new music and bands.

    I listen to a lot of Japanese jazz/fusion. Stuff like Shiina Ringo, H Zettrio, Hiromi, Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, etc. Even J-pop is good. Anything by Airi Suzuki is flawless. Morning Musume is great. It's the polar opposite of death metal, and I sometimes need that. American pop music is a disaster though. It's lazy and grotesque. It's Clockwork Orange torture.
    Stateside, Kamasi Washington is badass. That cover he did of Metallica's "My of Friend Misery" is better than the original. Once those drums kick in, you'll understand. I wish his bassist, Miles Mosley, would put out another album. Watch that "Abraham" live track of his where he's in the library. The solo is unbelievable and metal in a way you wouldn't think was possible.
    (My Clockwork Orange metaphor fails. The MC loved the music. He hated what he was watching as it played, but you know what I mean.)

    I only listen to metal as well and 90% of the time it's new music. I also only read books about metal. and in my downtime I talk about metal most of the time haha. I'm in my 40s and I've been doing this since 17 years old. I just love metal tbh. I don't feel there's anything wrong with it! But if you like other music, you should try to make time to check it out too. The thing with metal is that it's so expansive, there's SO MUCH new music all the time you can never really catch up completely.

    Having listened to metal for years ranging from metalcore to extreme, a few rabbit holes that I have enjoyed a lot over the years include post-punk, Alternative EDM (Breakcore, hardcore etc), and J-music (Japanese indie, J-rock, J-pop). In some ways, it's possible to relate a lot of genres to metal sonically or musically so it's helped me become more well-rounded I would say

    You can't go through life being a one trick pony. What I do find dumb is metalheads trying to be more Metal than the next guy..... ie. My metal is more metal than yours ...c'mon. Whatever happened to taste. I remember being in high school here in south Africa in the 80's... when we used to smuggle cassette tapes that were pirated from one to the next... hey don't judge me... that was what the world was for us back then ... our crappy government was scorned by the rest of earth for apartheid... what I was saying is that I remember getting a Master of puppets bootleg pirate copy and thinking I was a God and my friends listened to Def Leppard and I hated their stupid guts because they listened to that dumb crap... musically they were just inferior... musically. Mentally... metal took over my life... have I remained superior...yes I guess😂 but I can listen to any other genres without feeling like I'm cheating on Metal...this only happens when I listen to shitty bands like Marilyn Manson or fear factory...

Every morning after work I listen to metal to relax.... And as far as the reading thing reading nonfiction just slows you down you got to grasp all those facts and dates and places... It's a tricky question and I'm glad you talked about this topic. With metal being so diverse, I thought I was already well rounded with just that style. However I also enjoy a lot of prog rock and discovering the site Prog Archives has helped me find lots of non metal music that I like. What I find interesting about prog is that it can pull influences from anything, it's almost like having all music styles in one genre.
    I have a lot of respect for people like you who dedicate themselves to exposing new music from obscure bands and I understand it can be frustrating to have little time to return to your favorite albums from past years. I've started to have that problem in 2024, so I've begun to slow down the number of new releases I listen to while still keeping track of what comes out. So now half of what I listen to is music from the last 12 months and the other half includes anything that's over a year old. This balance saved my musical journey.

    • @heavymetalphilosophy
      @heavymetalphilosophy  5 місяців тому +1

      My favorite death metal album last year was prog and my top black metal albums were all mostly prog as well... I wonder if this was my usual prog random or perhaps subconsciously influenced by what I talked about in this episode. 🤔

      @@heavymetalphilosophyIt's quite possible. I see that last year you had Enslaved, Dodeheimsgard, Horrendous and the Anchoret in your favourites (I also loved all of these 😀). I think that these bands are ways for metal fans to start exploring other music styles through their own genre. For me it's the other way round because I started listening to metal through the softer genres (power, prog, symphonic, etc ) and the progressive black/ melodeath bands helped me appreciate the more extreme metal styles.
